Katherine Brunt seeking revenge when England face Australia for the women's Ashes

Why England quick is “desperate” for another Ashes triumph before she retires

Katherine Brunt is desperate to finish her career with another Ashes series victory. That’s not to say the England quick – who turns 34 on Tuesday, the opening day of the series – will retire immediately if her side manage to win the Ashes back from Australia over the course of the next month.”They keep finding ways to pull me back and patch me up,” Brunt said, her groan wrapped up in a laugh.”I’d love to be part of another Ashes-winning England side again and that would be a lovely little thing to finish on, I guess. But with the World T20 [in 2020], that’s definitely not something I’m going to say no to.”ALSO READ: How Amy Jones turned potential into performanceBrunt was part of the side which won the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup in England in 2009, taking 3 for 6 in the final against New Zealand. She is a veteran of seven Ashes series, starting with England’s first series win for 42 years in 2005, and missing only the 2007-08 edition while she recovered from surgery to deal with a back condition which she still has to manage carefully. Having been part of the England side which lost the Ashes in 2015 and saw Australia retain them through the drawn 2017-18 series, Brunt would love nothing more than to win them back.”I’m desperate for an Ashes win,” Brunt told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s the most important thing there is to me. I love the World Cup, world tournaments, any series between us and Australia, but the Ashes for me is just the pinnacle.”For some reason it’s got the most amount of emotion in it. You go through so much. Normal games you go through nerves and anxiety and excitement, things like that, but with an Ashes series you have all that and then you have all the extra emotion like, I don’t know, revenge. Certainly pride, and there’s just so much more passion for it.”The banter just kind of gets away with itself and gets a bit heated at times, so there’s just so much more fun and enjoyment and emotion involved in an Ashes series.”Immediately after sweeping their rain-affected ODI and T20I series against West Indies 3-0 and 1-0, the England squad underwent a course of fitness testing with many found to be in the best shape of their careers, possibly helped by extra time spent in the gym because of the bad weather.”We’ve managed to really keep our conditioning good knowing that the Ashes were literally around the corner,” Brunt said. “I’ve managed to stay niggle free. I’ll always have my issues with my back, that’s just part and parcel of fast bowling.”People do like to keep things to themselves but it’s no mystery I’ve always struggled with my back and it’s always something I’ve just had to manage properly. You’ve seen me miss the third one-dayer against West Indies. That wasn’t due to injury, that was due to just being smart and management of my back. That journey, four hours down south, is just not worth it when you can expose a youngster.”Brunt took 2 for 6 and 0 for 14 in the two ODIs she played against West Indies and 2 for 22 in the sole T20I. She has 146 wickets from 118 career ODIs at an average of 22.88.Katherine Brunt bowling for England•Getty Images

Everyone in England, let alone its cricketers, has welcomed an apparent turnaround in the weather over the past week but the unseasonably wet start to the summer could have implications for the pitches used against Australia.”England wickets can be a little bit tricky sometimes,” Brunt said. “Back in the day, we used to have seaming wickets and it would be a bit traumatic for the batsmen and these days we’re producing very good batting surfaces, even though the men’s World Cup is showing that all the seamers are being greedy and taking all the wickets. But that’s considering they are bowling 80, 90 mile an hour, more than that.”I can see the women’s Ashes outside of things being more rounded, with the spinners [involved]. The men are making the wickets tired now so spin might indeed come into it at some point.”But with the Aussies themselves, you can’t beat a bit of swing, from both sides. If you can get past that early stage where the ball’s moving about, then you can really cash in.”The Ashes will be decided over three one-day matches, starting on Tuesday in Leicester, followed by a four-day Test match in Taunton from July 18 and three T20s, starting on July 26 in Chelmsford and finishing in Bristol five days later.

FIGUEIRENSE IGUALA O JOGO

Aston Villa’s 7/10 star was the real hero over Watkins v Fulham

Aston Villa's charge towards Champions League football was handed another boost on Saturday as they picked up an excellent 2-1 victory over a Fulham side that had won seven of their 12 home matches.

It was vital that Unai Emery's side bounced back this weekend after the disappointing loss to Manchester United last Sunday, and the visitors started brilliantly, taking the lead in the 23rd minute.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Villa had less possession throughout the game, but ten minutes after the break, they added their second, which would ultimately secure them the win. The Cottagers fought back almost instantly, but the Villans held strong to claim an important three points.

This kept them fourth in the Premier League, just two points above Tottenham Hotspur, but there were two players who stood out in particular.

Ollie Watkins starred yet again

Ollie Watkins continues to exceed all expectations, and he has arguably been the best centre-forward in the league this season. The former Brentford gem has scored 13 goals this campaign while also registering ten assists, which proves he's a complete forward.

Yesterday, he netted a brace, showing up when he's needed most, like he always does. The 28-year-old was a handful throughout, using his elite movement to have five shots, creating a big chance, and winning 100% of his duels.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

Watkins is playing with extreme confidence and he seems to score with every opportunity he gets. His first goal was a composed low strike after swivelling on the ball to evade his opponent, while the second one highlighted his ability to get in behind the defence, spinning Issa Diop and smashing the ball home just inside the box.

It was an excellent performance from the England international, but there was one Villa player who may have gone slightly under the radar for his showing yesterday.

Who else starred for Aston Villa?

Just like Watkins, Douglas Luiz is one of the first names on the teamsheet and one that Emery can rely upon to bring quality, class, and leadership to the side.

That was all on display yesterday, with the Brazilian showing why he is of interest to the likes of Arsenal and why he is a class above most in his position in the league.

With Boubacar Kamara set to miss the rest of the season, Luiz was tasked with stepping up his defensive duties alongside John McGinn, however, that didn't take away from his technical ability and persistence in making things happen in the final third.

As you can see, the 25-year-old was influential in progressing the ball all game long, and without his bravery in possession, Villa would have struggled yesterday.

His ability to pass the ball into the final third and create four chances while maintaining a pass completion rate of 88% is impressive, and it was also important next to McGinn, who managed zero chances created and passes into the final third.

The midfielder also won four of his five duels while making six recoveries, which showed that he was proactive in the middle of the park. That said, the former Manchester City ace was only handed a 7/10 rating by Birmingham Live, but they did mention that he's "such a key player in this Villa team."

It was a fantastic afternoon for Villa, Emery, Watkins, Luiz, and, of course, the Villans faithful.

England could have stand-in captain and coach for New Zealand tour – Ashley Giles

Two-Test tour falls outside of World Test Championship, and therefore offers a chance to avoid player burn-our

George Dobell29-Jul-2019England may use the New Zealand tour later this year to rest players and coaching staff as they seek to reduce the dangers of “burn out”. That could raise the possibility that they may tour with an interim coach and a temporary replacement as Test captain.England are scheduled to play two Tests and five T20Is in New Zealand during a tour that starts in late October and ends in early December. But with those Tests not counting towards the World Test Championship and England also scheduled to undertake tours to South Africa – where they will play four Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is – and Sri Lanka – where they will play two Tests – during the winter of 2019-20, Ashley Giles has admitted there may be a temptation to rest the busiest players and coaches.”We’re not trying to lessen the importance of that series, but it’s not in the World Test Championship,” Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, said. “We’ve got a lot of cricket this winter and we need to be careful with some of the workloads. It isn’t part of the Test Championship so we’ll use that series as we see really.”The World Test Championship (WTC) is launched this week in the hope the added context will increase interest in the longest format of the game. But the series in New Zealand was arranged before the announcement of the WTC and results in it will not accrue points.Avoiding the burn-out of his players and coaches is likely to be an important feature of Giles’ role at the helm. He admits there is little he can do to change the schedule – financial realities necessitate an almost never-ending tour for England – but reasons that resting individuals can extend their careers.”We play more home cricket than anyone,” Giles said. “And while there may be some things you can do with the schedule, there are other pressures – money pressures, TV pressures – that make it a very tricky balance. We’ll probably have the same number of fixtures but more rotation of players. It was a tough day for Joe Root and his team•Getty Images

“That puts more focus how we care for players and make sure we don’t get any burn-out. We’ve got to be flexible with the players otherwise we’re going to lose them.”There was undoubtedly a hangover from the World Cup during the Ireland Test. After the emotional and physical strain of that seven weeks and particularly the final… I worried how we would pick the players up if we lost. Fortunately we didn’t, but heading into a Test match against Ireland a week later was difficult for them.”England could also go to New Zealand with an interim coach. While Giles admits he has had “some very relaxed conversations over a coffee or the phone” with prospective candidates, he has been keen not to overshadow the World Cup or Ashes preparations with speculation about the new head coach so has delayed a formal beginning of the process.”It might be a caretaker coach, yes,” Giles said. “I’ve always said if you looked at the World Cup and the Ashes it was far more important for me to have some stability now and less noise and chatter around the new head coach than worrying about someone going in who’s babysitting the New Zealand tour. I’d rather that than everything going on now.”That caretaker will not be Bayliss, who has already booked his flight home. “I think Trev’s done and I mean that in the nicest possible way,” Giles said. “He may always seem relaxed on the outside but he cares a lot and he’s had some sleepless nights through this summer. He’s a good guy and I think he’s done it the right way. He’s set himself a goal of getting to the end of this Ashes and then letting someone else take over.”One man who could be rested from the Test side is the captain, Joe Root. Root’s appetite for the game – and, in particular, his desire to re-establish himself as a T20 player – have rendered him hard to leave out and he has played every game (expect one World Cup warm-up match) this year. And assuming he is not another player in line for a rest, that would mean that Ben Stokes, who has been reappointed as the side’s vice-captain, could lead the team in the nation in which he was born. That would sustain an impressive comeback for Stokes, who missed the previous Ashes series after the ECB decided he should not be selected ahead of his trial for affray. He was subsequently found not guilty and capped a successful return to the side by being named player of the match in the World Cup final.”I take pride in being vice-captain,” Stokes said. “I love having that responsibility and it is something that I thoroughly enjoy doing. Being part of that think-tank is pretty cool. Playing in an Ashes series is always special and they don’t come around that often.”I am very good friends with Joe as well, off the field, and as much as I can do to help him through his career, not just as a captain but as a player as well, I am really looking forward to that challenge. Being named vice-captain again was very good words to hear when I got the call.”

Rutter boldly ditched in predicted Leeds lineup to face Plymouth

Leeds United are back at Home Park for the second time in February as they travel away from Yorkshire again to take on Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The Whites face off against Ian Foster's team for the third time in 2024 but for the first time in the Championship since a 2-1 win over the newly-promoted outfit in November 2023.

After a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in January in the FA Cup, the two sides were forced to play a replay earlier this month and Leeds ran out 4-1 winners after extra time.

Since that match, Daniel Farke's men have won two Championship matches by an aggregate score of 7-0, against Rotherham United and Swansea.

Leeds smashed the Swans 4-0 in Wales on Tuesday night and the German head coach could make some alterations to the starting XI from that win as games come thick and fast.

With this in mind, here is FFC's predicted Whites line-up to take on Plymouth at Home Park once again this weekend…

1 Illan Meslier

Illan Meslier

Illan Meslier should keep his place between the sticks for Leeds as he has been Farke's number one choice throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

He made one save to keep a clean sheet against Swansea last time out and will be looking for another shutout in this clash with Plymouth.

2 Connor Roberts

Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.

The first change to the starting XI could come at right-back with Connor Roberts, who joined on loan Premier League side Burnley on deadline day, coming in for Archie Gray.

As you can see in the table above, the 17-year-old academy graduate produced an excellent performance in Wales with strong defending to win all of his duels and an assist to set up Wilfried Gnonto's first goal.

However, the busy fixture list could make dropping the teenage whiz to the bench to provide Roberts with an opportunity to impress a good decision.

It would provide Gray with a rest and allow the Wales international to build up his match fitness, so that he is not short of it in a future games if Farke needs him.

3 Joe Rodon

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon produced a sublime performance against his former club on Tuesday night, and you can read about his superb display in the FFC article below.

Leeds titan who won 100% duels was as good as Gnonto & Summerville v Swans

The former Swans star enjoyed a wonderful visit to his former club on Tuesday.

ByDan Emery Feb 14, 2024 4 Ethan Ampadu

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Another Wales international should line up at the heart of the defence alongside his fellow countryman – Ethan Ampadu. He has been a revelation at centre-back in 2024 after an enforced change due to an injury to Pascal Struijk.

The pairing have played seven matches at centre-back together and Leeds have won all seven and kept six clean sheets, with one goal conceded, in that time.

They have been imperious at the back and should, therefore, start once again to keep out the likes of Morgan Whittaker and Ryan Hardie on Saturday.

5 Junior Firpo

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.

At left-back, Junior Firpo should keep his place in the starting XI after Sam Byram missed out on the matchday squad through injury on Tuesday.

The former Barcelona full-back has assisted four goals in 12 Championship appearances this season, and could provide a creative threat against Plymouth.

6 Ilia Gruev

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

Another player who should keep their place in the starting XI is former Werder Bremen central midfielder Ilia Gruev, who produced a fine display on Tuesday.

The impressive gem assisted Crysencio Summerville's opening goal on the night and completed 93% of his attempted passes in midfield for Leeds.

7 Glen Kamara

joe-rodon-glen-kamara-leeds-opinion

Farke should start Glen Kamara alongside Gruev once again as the superb partnership helped the Whites to control the match against Swansea.

The Finland international completed an eye-catching 96% of his attempted passes and created two chances for his teammates, which shows that both of the team's midfielders rarely gave the ball away with their passing.

8 Dan James

Dan James

The second and final change, in terms of personnel, to the XI could come on the right side of the attack with Dan James coming in to replace Georginio Rutter.

Of course, this is not a direct replacement as the French whiz is typically deployed in the number ten position, which was the case against Swansea.

Rutter did not have the best evening against the Swans as he failed to create a single chance for his teammates and did not find the back of the net from any of his four shot attempts, which came to an xG of 0.32.

James returned from injury to make an appearance off the bench against his former club and could, now, return to the starting XI this weekend.

The Wales international, who former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed has the "X-factor", has produced ten goals and six assists in 23 Championship starts this season, which shows that he has the quality to be a match-winner for the Whites.

9 Wilfried Gnonto

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Rutter being boldly ditched for James would allow Gnonto to move into a central position, which would provide the versatile gem with more opportunities to make runs through the middle to threaten the opposition goal.

10 Crysencio Summerville

Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville is another player who should keep his place in the starting XI as the Dutch whiz has been a constant threat to opposition defences this season.

The 22-year-old talent has racked up 15 goals and eight assists in 29 appearances in the Championship so far this season for Farke's team on the left flank.

Mzansi Super League to stay on SABC network

Cricket South Africa had been trying to get SuperSport to broadcast the second season of the T20 tournament but it couldn’t be done

The Jozi Stars team celebrates with the inaugural MSL trophy•MSL

This year’s Mzansi Super League will once again be screened on , South Africa’s public broadcaster. There had been some speculation, especially ahead of the first edition of the MSL, that Cricket South Africa might look to as broadcaster, but they have ultimately stuck with once again, despite the lack of a financial incentive to do so. Last month the secured a R3.2 billion bailout from the government, and earlier this week it was announced that the broadcaster had failed to secure the rights for the country’s Premier Soccer League as it was not commercially viable. But CSA are short of other options.List of retained players

Cape Town Blitz: Asif Ali, Janneman Malan, Anrich Nortje, Dale Steyn
Durban Heat: Kyle Abbott, Sarel Erwee, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Khaya Zondo
Jozi Stars: Dan Christian, Reeza Hendricks, Duanne Olivier, Sinethemba Qeshile, Ryan Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen
Nelson Mandela Bay Giants: Junior Dala, Heino Kuhn, Marco Marais, Chris Morris, Jon-Jon Smuts
Paarl Rocks: Henry Davids, Cameron Delport, Bjorn Fortuin, Aiden Markram, Mangaliso Mosehle, Tabraiz Shamsi
Tshwane Spartans: Theunis de Bruyn, Tony de Zorzi, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla

“We only have literally two broadcasters in the country who can afford to broadcast cricket, and that’s and ,” chief executive Thabang Moroe said on Tuesday. “So you can imagine that CSA does not have much room to manoeuvre in terms of making decisions.”As things stand, we are lucky to find ourselves where we are, in the sense that we can broadcast international cricket both on free-to-air as well as pay TV. Obviously because none of them have exclusivity, we do not receive the same values as we would, had we given any of them exclusivity, but that’s the pain we have to take for wanting to spread the game.”As far as restructuring of commercial and broadcast deals is concerned, it’s difficult to say yes or no to that question now, the reason being the landscape that we operate in as far as the South African economy is concerned.”The second MSL will take place in November and December this year. The date for the player draft has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be shortly, as are the various South African and international marquee players.Dale Steyn is one of several Protea cricketers who have been retained by their franchises for this year’s tournament. More than 250 cricketers, including international stars, T20 specialists and Kolpak signings have entered the draft.”This is confirmation that MSL is now an established global brand that is taking its place at the head table alongside the other Global T20 events,” Moroe said. “We have drawn interest from around the world with players applying from virtually all the top tier international countries.”This will certainly be the biggest T20 event we have hosted since the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup that was staged here in 2007 and became the fore-runner of all the global T20 events that followed. We look forward to adding yet another highlight to our home international season that will be followed by the incoming tours by England and Australia.”
