There may have been concern inside Aston Villa as soon as it emerged that Thomas Tuchel would be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season. Alongside Liverpool and Barcelona, another top European club was entering the manager market, and Unai Emery was bound to be hot property.

Sure enough, there were subsequently reports from Germany that Bayern are watching Emery, having seen his abilities first-hand when he knocked them out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage as the manager of Villarreal in 2021/22.

The reigning Bundesliga champions would love to appoint Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso, the man who looks set to dethrone them this season, but Liverpool are already in "advanced discussions" ahead of the departure of Jurgen Klopp. Emery is a potential plan-b, alongside former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeness. A return for Hansi Flick could also be on the cards.

Emery remains committed to Villa for now

In his daily briefing for Caught Offside, journalist Fabrizio Romano has given his take on the rumours linking Emery to Bayern. The good news for Villa is that the Spaniard remains "100% focused" on the club and isn't currently in talks over any other roles.

He said: “Some reports have suggested that Unai Emery could be considered as the next Bayern Munich boss. This would mean leaving Aston Villa managerless after two seasons in charge of the Premier League club.

“Honestly, I’ve zero on this at the moment, Bayern as well as Barça will be linked with many managers. I already saw many names around, but no decision has been made at all. Unai Emery is a fantastic manager, I think he has improved a lot in recent years but he’s now 100% focused on the Aston Villa project and he’s not speaking to other clubs right now.”

Losing Emery is unthinkable for Villa

It's vital that Villa keep Emery because, quite simply, he's the best thing to happen to the club in years. They have a chance to win their first major silverware since 1996 after reaching the Europa Conference League round of 16, where they'll face Ajax, and they could also qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1983.

Somerset need precisely 250 runs on the final day here to stay neck and neck with Essex in a race for the County Championship that might yet rival the excitement of three years ago when Middlesex so memorably pipped Yorkshire at Lord’s and left Somerset heartbroken runners-up.Essex, winners of an extraordinary contest at Canterbury, have the upper hand, but they are due at Taunton in the final match of the season and with only four rounds remaining the chances of the outcome determining the title must be quite high.Much may depend, though, on what happens here. Somerset, having trailed by 111 on first innings, have given themselves a clear opportunity by dismissing Warwickshire for 146 but chasing runs on the last day at Edgbaston is seldom straightforward.Jeetan Patel and three tall seam bowlers will see to that. This Somerset side is packed with batting talent, yet it would be a surprise if this were not one of their trickier assignments and an absorbing last day beckons.Day three, with the balance tipping one way and then the other, was engaging enough. The weather was too poor for any play to happen on the first day and only 50 overs were possible on the second.This is the South Africans’ only warm-up game before the first of three Tests against India, starting October 2, and it didn’t start too well after Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted for first strike. Umesh Yadav, who has replaced the injured Jasprit Bumrah in the India Test squad, struck first by getting Dean Elgar out caught by Priyank Panchal for 6 in the seventh over. Manchester United have identified three potential Erik ten Hag replacements as the United boss looks increasingly unlikely to begin the 2024/25 Premier League season in the Old Trafford technical area, it has emerged.

Despite a considerable injury list, there is a feeling that this season simply hasn't been good enough for Manchester United.

With just one defeat fewer than relegation battlers Everton this season, Sunday's heavy 3-1 defeat to Manchester City demonstrated the vast gulf in class between the two sides, and extended the club's terrible run against the top half clubs since Ten Hag's arrival.

The inability to go toe-to-toe with clubs around them is a major factor in the uncertainty around Ten Hag, along with some questionable transfers that he has signed off on. With the addition of Omar Berrada and impending addition of Dan Ashworth above the United boss, the latter may no longer be a problem. However, that has not stopped new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe from scouring possible replacements for Ten Hag.

Brentford boss among the options

Now, a report from ESPN suggests that Brentford boss Thomas Frank is among the options under consideration to take charge at Old Trafford should the Dutchman depart. The Bees head coach has endured his toughest season to date this time round thanks in part to injuries and suspensions, with his side currently just six points above the drop zone and having won just one of their last five games.

However, his broader record has rendered him a man for consideration, and it is added that the Red Devils are also assessing England boss Gareth Southgate, who is widely expected to step down from Three Lions duty in the aftermath of this summer's Euro 2024 championships, along with Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.

Though it is stressed that no decision on Ten Hag has been made, ESPN report that Ratcliffe and co are 'determined to avoid being unprepared in a summer when Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are already in the process of identifying and hiring a new manager'.

Any move for Frank would have the blessing of ex-Watford man Troy Deeney, who believed that the Brentford boss would have been perfect to take over at Tottenham before they eventually appointed Ange Postecoglou.

"Frank is an outstanding, ambitious and hungry manager", Deeney explained in May 2023. "I know some will say that his Brentford side play a lot of route one football but when they were promoted from the Championship under the Dane they were an excellent footballing side."

It remains to be seen whether or not Ten Hag is granted a stay of execution, but the speculation surrounding his post is only likely to increase between now and the end of the Premier League campaign.

Williams is a particularly curious case, as Spurs have been thrust into the race for him these last few weeks. The Spaniard, who's bagged three La Liga goals and eight assists in 24 appearances over 2023/2024, could leave for just £43 million this summer – as is the release clause in his contract.

Tottenham told to sign Nico Williams

Pundit John Wenham, speaking to Tottenham News this week, has said he would welcome the forward with "open arms" with Lange told to do a deal for Williams this summer.

“Williams is a good young talent," said Wenham.

“It appears that Tottenham are going to invest in a wide forward this summer, with that position seemingly the main target. Williams is a player who appears to be very highly regarded and rated.

“He’s probably someone who is on the shortlist of 20 to 30 of Europe’s biggest clubs. If Spurs decided to pursue him, I’d welcome him with open arms. He has real pace, he can cause problems out wide, and he seems to be involved in a lot of big games.”

The 21-year-old's output in one of Europe's most competitive divisions has also been mightly impressive, so the £43m clause in his contract will come as a pretty enticing one from Tottenham's perspective. This, however, could make him a top target for a host of other elite sides.
