Not sure who went 'easy' on Virat Kohli for IPL contract – Tim Paine

Rejects Michael Clarke’s claim that Australia were “too scared” to take on the Indian captain during the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Virat Kohli and Tim Paine shake hands after the series•Mark Evans/Stringer

Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine has rejected his predecessor Michael Clarke’s contention that some members of the national team had been “too scared” to take on Virat Kohli too aggressively in their 2018-19 encounters for fear of what it would do to potentially lucrative IPL deals. With India scheduled to tour Australia for a Test series next summer, Clarke had reckoned that the prospect of endangering contracts in the IPL had played on the minds of some of Paine’s team as they lost the series 2-1 in the absence of the banned Steven Smith and David Warner. The return of that pair to the Australian side has made a marked difference over the past 12 months, pushing them up to a clear second place on the World Test Championship table.Paine, who is seen in the Amazon documentary, , counselling his team not to give Kohli too much aggression to feed off during the series, said that beyond tactical attempts to keep India’s captain quiet there were no other motivations involved as Clarke had suggested.”I certainly didn’t notice too many people being that nice to Virat or not trying to get him out or anything like that,” Paine told ESPNcricinfo. “I thought everyone who had the ball in their hand or when we were batting were trying their absolute best to win the game for Australia. I’m not sure who was going easy on him; we certainly had a thing where we didn’t want to provoke any fight with him because we think that’s when he plays at his best.”Who knows what will happen this series and, as we saw in the documentary, there was still quite a lot of heat in some of those games. I certainly wasn’t holding back, but again the IPL’s not a huge draw for me at the moment, so I had nothing to lose. But anytime our guys go out and play a Test match for Australia, they’ll be giving their absolute all and I’m pretty sure they’re not thinking about an IPL contract when they’re running in, bowling to Virat.”Back in November 2018, Clarke had previously critiqued the national team’s approach in the wake of the Newlands scandal and Cricket Australia’s cultural review, declaring that they “won’t win s**t” by “worrying about being liked”, a notion that was also shut down by Paine. However, he has admitted that one of the Australian team’s struggles in the first year after Newlands had been finding a way to play hard cricket without feeling hemmed in by expectations of better behaviour. In recent series, against England, Pakistan and New Zealand, Paine underscored that a balance has been achieved.”What you say on the field is irrelevant 99% of the time,” Paine said. “Sometimes you can get a little inside someone’s head or something like that, but if you’re not batting well and not bowling well, all the talk in the world doesn’t mean anything. There’s no doubt our first focus is on executing our skill and being as good as we can possibly be in that area and then sometimes things happen on a cricket field and you’ve got to go in, you’ve got to change your tack, or you’ve got to have a few words.”As we’ve seen the last 12 or 18 months, we still do that, we still stick up for each other, we still fight as hard as any Australian team, but we’ve probably just had to move with the times and I’ve been really proud of the way we’ve played out cricket.”Irrespective of how they play, Paine admitted that the current state of uncertainty over when international cricket can resume is playing on his mind. Having returned to the Test team in 2017 and thrust into the captaincy within a few months due to Newlands, he said there was frustration at knowing when the Test Championship, in particular, can restart: the final is currently scheduled for mid-2021 at Lord’s.”It is a very difficult time. You have things like the Test Championship that are a huge goal for our team and certainly a huge part of my individual goals and where I want to go. So the unknown of that is challenging at the moment,” Paine said. “But just staying in the moment, who knows what’s going to happen, hopefully we get our country and the world back to how it was and we can all live our lives normally again.”Part of that was being back out on the cricket fields and football fields, which is an important part of Australian life, that sort of sporting endeavour. It’s difficult to put into words because you’re disappointed that what you set out to achieve as a team might not be happening now, but at the same time it’s a pretty small issue compared to what a lot of people are going through in the world.”As for the likelihood that cricket may need to be played for some time in empty stadiums, Paine said that this was a secondary concern. “Fans are still going to be watching on TV and who knows what’s going to happen. We might have crowds, we might not, it’s not something we can control,” he said. “We can control how we act and how we represent our country and our fans, and in the last 12 months in particular I think our whole group – from our players to our staff – have done an unbelievably good job of that, so we want to continue that whether there’s crowds or not.”

Mercurial outsiders v solid favourites

Buckle up for the India v Pakistan 2011 World Cup semi-final in Mohali

The Preview by Sriram Veera29-Mar-2020

AFP

The Big pictureBeyond the hype, this contest can perhaps be best viewed through the prism of the two captains. Shahid Afridi is the passionate, exhibitionist leader who doesn’t mind showing his emotions on the field. He will shout, cajole, plead, laugh, roar and feel every pulsating moment of the contest. It’s exactly what this Pakistan team needs after the controversies of 2010 – someone who can remind them of the school-boyish joy that this game can provide.MS Dhoni is the uber-cool captain and, while he can be vocal while dealing with the press, he is almost invisible on the field. Silent nods of appreciation, a quiet word in the ear, calm instructions, a shrug of the shoulder is all you will get from him. And again, it’s what this star-heavy team needs. Someone who can be calm and remind them of the basics of the game.Pakistan – who told their players they could be here in the semi-finals? – almost renew themselves with each crisis. That’s how it has been always: Controversies. Paralysis. Rebirth. Success. And more controversies. This was a big tournament for the survival of Misbah-ul-Haq, in the middle of a great comeback. In a sense, the Lord’s Test spot-fixing saga and its sordid aftermath was actually a blessing in disguise since it paved the way for his return. For Younis Khan, too, survival instinct, as a batsman facing a dip in form before the tournament, would have helped in dealing with that crisis. Playing his last tournament, Shoaib Akhtar knew this was the time to let his game do the talking. And for that man Afridi, mentally almost perennially young, this was the best chance to dazzle on the biggest stage. He has taken that chance and led the team with great passion. Kamran Akmal lives and breathes in amnesia. Bad memories don’t haunt him – who else could have recovered so well after that nightmarish effort against New Zealand? And yet nothing much has changed with the way they play cricket on the field. It’s still the bowlers who win the games for them. For all that is mercurial about them, Pakistan have lost just one game in this tournament.India have occasionally limped, at times choked, sometimes dazzled, before beating Australia to reach to the semi-finals. The progress card has the bowlers in the red, the batsmen guilty of not finishing the job, and the fielding has always been almost beyond redemption. Their mode of progress should actually have freed them up in some ways. The batsmen must have realised that they can’t try too hard to cover up for their bowlers’ weakness by trying to pile on too much, with the batting Powerplay pulling the rug from under their feet a few times. The bowlers showed they are learning from the serial hiding by putting up a pretty disciplined effort against Australia. In some ways, the pressure must be off them, as not many would be surprised if they leak 300 runs. It’s the batting India depend on. Is there any weakness in it barring those Powerplay debacles? Gautam Gambhir hasn’t been at his personal best – were he playing at his optimum, he would have rendered Virat Kohli superfluous at No. 4. Yet Gambhir’s slightly iffy form has made Kohli vital in that middle order. Prior to the tournament, it was felt that Kohli would be a misfit in the lower order, where Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan would be more dangerous, and that he might be wasted even further up. But Gambhir hasn’t been at his fluent best and India have turned to Kohli to take them through the middle overs. Gambhir has always raised his game against Pakistan and his form will be crucial on Wednesday as it would then give the middle order the licence to attack.Form guideIndia WWLWW (completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WWWLW
Watch out for…Virender Sehwag: In the past few games Sehwag has – curiously, for a batsman so wonderfully innovative as him – tried to hit every spinner through the off side. He would back away and try to drive, slice or cut and has fallen a few times in the process. Pakistan might well have a spinner bowling at him early and it will be fascinating to see whether Sehwag will retain that off-side bias or be more inclusive, and open, in his approach.Umar Gul’s yorkers: After Lasith Malinga, Gul has probably the best control over the yorker in world cricket today. There have of course been days when the radar has been awry but more often than not he has got them right. The Indian lower middle order will be fully tested by the yorkers, slower ones and the bouncers that he loves to bowl.Sachin Tendulkar v Abdul Razzaq: Bowlers like Hansie Cronje and Razzaq, more than the Umar Guls and the Shoaib Akhtars, have been reasonably successful against Tendulkar. Cronje used to tease Tendulkar with deliveries shaping away from a length outside off while Razzaq specialises in the opposite: he slides the ball back in, looking for that lbw. He hasn’t always had success, but it will be a mini-battle worth watching. Will Tendulkar opt for all-out attack or will he bat with relative care against Razzaq?Zaheer Khan v Kamran Akmal: Kamran loves to square drive and Zaheer has been able to bend the ball back in to the right-hand batsmen this tournament with the new ball. This contest should be fun.Umar Akmal v spin: India will rely a lot on the slow bowlers during the middle overs, and Umar is the middle-order batsman who loves to attack spin. He has laid into the likes of Daniel Vettori on the tour of New Zealand and is always itching to cut and slog-sweep.Team newsThe signs are that Ashish Nehra is likely to replace Munaf Patel. Even Yusuf Pathan has been sweating it out in the nets raising speculations that he might push R Ashwin hard for a spot in the team. Ashwin has been really good in the games he has played and has added some teeth to the attack while the nature of the track has made India think about bringing in Yusuf.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Suresh Raina, 8 Yusuf Pathan / R Ashwin, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish NehraPakistan are thinking of playing three seamers. The choice for the third seamer is between Shoaib and Wahab Riaz. Afridi said Shoaib wasn’t 100% fit but a decision will be taken on the evening preceding the match.Pakistan (probable) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi (capt), 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Saeed Ajmal / Abdur Rehman, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Wahab Riaz / Shoaib Akhtar. It’s a batting pitch but what’s eating everyone is the dew factor.Heavy storms, lightning and rain lashed Chandigarh late on match eve, immediately adding a light shroud of doubt over the game. For the whole day there were no signs, not even a hint of rain playing a spoil-sport but around 9pm, there were rumbling sounds of thunder accompanied by high-speed winds. The velocity of the winds were so strong that the heavy iron barricades manning the team hotel were blown away. The weather forecast for Wednesday suggests sunshine during the day with minimal chance of heavy rain. Punjab Cricket Association officials said that they had studied the forecasts for the period ending March 31 and there was “zero precipitation” expected. In simple terms, there are no strong rains expected on the day of the match.Stats and trivia Afridi is the first bowler in World Cup history to take four wickets in a match on four different occasions in a tournamentMS Dhoni is the only wicketkeeper-captain who has played in 100 ODIsZaheer Khan is the second Indian bowler after Javagal Srinath (44 wickets) to take more than 40 wickets in World CupsQuotes”I feel I have been batting really well. It is just that in some situation I could not bat flamboyantly. If you bat at 5, 6 or 7, and if the top order does really well, it does not give opportunity to lower-order batsmen. The last game was an ideal game where I could have got a bit more runs which were needed at that point of time. So form has been a worry it is just that sometimes there were not many opportunities and when there was an opportunity and there were times I was not able to score in a particular game”.

Bye bye: Wolves chiefs set to sell player they had really high hopes for

Wolves are set to sell a young player who has just one year remaining on his current deal, according to a new update regarding his future.

Wolves transfer news

Gary O'Neil and his side have had a good season overall, making themselves a solid mid-table Premier League team and enjoying some great results, not least winning at home to champions Manchester City. This summer, new signings will hopefully arrive to add more quality and depth to Wolves' squad, and numerous players have been linked with moves to Molineux in the coming months.

Wanderers have reportedly enquired about the availability of Chelsea striker Armando Broja, who is loan at Fulham currently. He has only featured for 60 minutes across seven Premier League appearances at Craven Cottage, however, struggling badly for playing time.

Werder Bremen winger Justin Njinmah has been linked with a move to Wolves, too, being considered an "interesting" player, having scored six goals in ten Bundesliga starts this season. Bright Osayi-Samuel is another target, possessing "blistering pace" and shining at right-back for Fenerbahce.

There will also be players who Wolves are desperate to keep hold of, not least key centre-back Max Kilman, with Manchester United backed to make a move for him.

Wolves ready to sell young leader this summer

According to Football Insider's Wayne Veysey, Wolves are happy to sell youngster Mason Rees this summer, no longer seeing a future for him at the club.

The 18-year-old still has one year remaining on the contract that he signed at Molineux last year, but he doesn't appear to have made the desired progress since then, having initially been "viewed by Wolves chiefs as a promising talent".

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

It is always a shame to see a young player failed to make the grade at a club, with homegrown talent something that is so important, and exactly the same applies with Rees.

When he signed his new deal last year, academy manager for football, Jon Hunter-Barratt, lauded his leadership skills, saying: "He’s had a really good pre-season and is a really keen worker who is happy to do the work without the ball for the team.

"It’s a nice moment for him and his family to be rewarded with a professional contract. He is the type of character who likes to lead by example whilst he’s on the pitch. You can see that with the way he plays and he doesn’t leave anything behind."

Football is a ruthless business, however, and if Wolves feel that now is the right time to cash in on Rees before losing him on a free transfer next summer, it is the right decision.

Wolves losing "one of the best midfielders" was a bigger mistake than Neves

Wolves must rue not signing a player in 2021 who is currently shining on the biggest stage…

ByRoss Kilvington May 8, 2024

At 18, he is still so young and will hopefully have another club willing to snap him up, and a combined 71 appearances for Wolves' Under-21 and Under-18s suggests that he has plenty of ability.

Lachlan Stevens returns as Melbourne Renegades WBBL coach

He will also be head coach of the Victoria Women’s team

Lachlan Stevens has been named head coach of the Melbourne Renegades WBBL team and the Victoria Women’s team amid the restructuring at Cricket Victoria. The Renegades role is a comeback for Stevens who was previously their head coach in the first two seasons of the WBBL.Most recently he had been interim head coach of the Victoria men’s team following Andrew McDonald’s appointment as Justin Langer’s assistant with the national side.Stevens replaces Tim Coyle in the Renegades position after he was let go earlier this month while with Victoria he fills the role vacated by David Hemp.”It’s a great time to be returning to the women’s game given the growth female cricket has enjoyed in recent seasons,” Stevens said. “It’s always enjoyable to watch and work with players at all stages of their careers and I’m honoured to be able to work with another Victorian cricket side. I look forward to watching all of them going about their training and playing.””I was lucky enough to be a part of the Renegades in the first two seasons of the WBBL and I’m looking forward to catching up with several of those players again in the not too distant future. I can’t wait to watch the WBBL up close again with all the progress that’s been made in the game over the last three years.”Renegades, Victoria and Australia allrounder Sophie Molineux admitted it had been a shock to see Coyle leave his job.”There’s a lot going in, not just in sport, but it definitely hit home when we saw Coyley go,” she said. “The last couple of years at the Renegades he’s done a massive amount of work to get us into position to play in semi-finals and be really close to the grand finals.”We’ll always be thankful for what he’s done. The group has definitely got some really sad emotions about him not being able to come back.”The Victoria team includes Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry when they aren’t on international duty.

Arsenal looking into signing £34 million Thomas Partey replacement

Arsenal have been looking into signing a highly-rated potential replacement for midfielder Thomas Partey, and he could cost them just £34 million.

Arsenal open to selling Partey as Edu chases new Rice partner

The Ghanaian was a key player under Mikel Arteta last season, making 33 Premier League appearances, but he's been far more starved of chances this term.

Arsenal show club they're prepared to pay £52 million to sign their key man

It would be enough.

ByEmilio Galantini May 10, 2024

Partey's been handed the starting nod by Arteta on just seven occasions in the league across 2023/2024, which is a far cry from his previous mainstay status. This is largely down injury problems and the form of Declan Rice, with Jorginho also coming into his own in recent months.

Arsenal officially rewarded the latter with a contract extension this week, keeping Jorginho at Hale End until 2025, but it is likely that Partey may well be gone far before then.

Indeed, it is believed Arteta is open to selling Partey this summer, with clubs in Saudi Arabia taking a firm interest and apparently considering a "lucrative" contract offer for the ex-Atletico Madrid star (GiveMeSport).

The 30-year-old's contract also expires next year, giving sporting director Edu precious little time to make any money back off the £45 million they paid to sign him from Atletico in 2020.

Now could be the time to sell Partey and respectfully wave goodbye to the midfielder after years of service. It is believed that Arsenal are also keen to sign a new central midfielder this summer, who could step into the African's shoes.

Reports this week have suggested Arsenal are holding talks with Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Indeed, claims from Spain have also surfaced recently that Edu is prepared to pay £52 million to sign Zubimendi – which would be enough given that fee is the full value of his release clause.

However, Arsenal have other positions they want to strengthen as well, namely in-between the sticks, defensively and further forward (Simon Collings). Money will have to be spent wisely when the window reopens, and a cheaper alternative to Zubimendi could be Borussia Monchengladbach ace Kouadio "Manu" Kone.

Arsenal looking into signing Manu Kone to replace Partey

Indeed, according to Stev Kay talking to KS1TV, relayed by TBR, Arsenal have been "looking into" signing Kone this summer, coming after reports from Sky Germany last year that he could cost as little as £34 million to prise away from Gladbach.

The 22-year-old has made 20 Bundesliga appearances this term, with WhoScored detailing his main strength as an excellent dribbler. Interestingly, former Premier League keeper Mark Schwarzer urged Liverpool to make a move for him last year.

kouadio-kone-newcastle-united-transfer-news-premier-league

"There is one player, for me, that stands out that plays for Borussia Monchengladbach and that’s Kone," said the Australian on Sky Sports' The Football Show (via HITC).

“He is only 21 years old. He came from Toulouse. He has only been at Gladbach for two years. But he has been a real big find for them and a phenomenal player in the Bundesliga. I think someone like him could do really well at Liverpool.”
