Nathan Coulter-Nile expected his release from Mumbai Indians: 'They paid overs for me'

He is hopeful of returning to IPL but is not optimistic about returning to the Australia T20 side

Melbourne Stars fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile was expecting to get released from his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians but the news could not have come at a worse moment.Coulter-Nile, 33, was on his return to the BBL on Thursday night after missing the last three weeks with a calf injury. He took 3 for 12 from his first 15 balls to put the Stars in a commanding position with the Renegades needing 62 to win from 27 balls. But he gave up three sixes and two fours in his last eight balls of the game, including 19 runs from the 19th over the match, as the Renegades won with two balls to spare.Adding salt to the wound, Coulter-Nile found out he had been released from the IPL champions the moment he turned his phone on.”Yep, that was good,” Coulter-Nile said. “Just got smacked in the 19th [over], get off the field and get told I’m being flicked, get the email.”Despite the timing, he was not surprised even after he had played in Mumbai’s title, taking 2 for 29 in the IPL final win over Delhi Capitals including the wickets of Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel.Related

“I was expecting that was going to happen,” Coulter-Nile said. “They paid overs for me so I thought that was going to happen. Hopefully, I can get picked up again this year. I’ve got nothing else on so hopefully I can get to the IPL.”Coulter-Nile was bought by Mumbai for AUD$1.63 million (8 crore) at the last IPL auction but was released after one season. He was one of nine Australians who were released by their IPL franchises, including international stars Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, and Aaron Finch.Coulter-Nile was also pragmatic about his prospects of returning to Australia’s limited-overs sides. He last played a T20I on Australia’s triumphant tour of India in 2019 and played five matches in the World Cup before missing out on selection at the business end of the tournament.Despite an expensive over against the Renegades, Nathan Coulter-Nile has had a good BBL either side of injury•Getty Images

He has bowled well in the four matches he’s played in the BBL, either side of his calf injury, claiming nine wickets at an economy rate of 6.36 and a strike-rate of 9.20.But even with Australia’s selectors likely to need up to 36 players to go on two different tours at the same time in February, Coulter-Nile does not believe he will be called upon for Australia’s five-match T20I tour of the New Zealand that follows the BBL.”I’ve not even thought about,” Coulter-Nile said. “I don’t think I’m in the mix at all. It’s just reading between the lines I think. I haven’t played for Australia in two years or something. So, I think I can just work it out myself.”Coulter-Nile is fully invested in trying to win the Stars an elusive BBL title after joining the club last year on a four-year deal.He blamed his performance on Wednesday night on some rust but was confident he could bounce back against Perth Scorchers on Saturday.”The first 18 balls were good,” he said. “My plan B, which were yorkers and fuller slower balls just weren’t coming out. I haven’t played that much in a few weeks which is what I’ll put it down to, but I’ll move on. I’ve played enough cricket to hopefully come back on Saturday and bowl well.”The Stars let an opportunity slip against the Renegades to all-but sew up a finals spot. They now face the Scorchers and the ladder-leading Sydney Sixers in their last two games.”Obviously that one hurts because that really could have put us in the mix for finals and now we’ve got to play the best two teams and win and hopefully that will put us in a good position,” Coulter-Nile said.”You’d rather be in a position where we’re flying on top of the ladder like the Sixers are but I guess if we do win these two games and get in the finals we’ll obviously gain some momentum, the boys will be playing some good cricket and we’ll have probably beaten the teams that we’re going to play in the finals.”

49ers step up interest to sign £15k-p/w star who scored vs Leeds in 23/24

Leeds United are stepping up their interest in one of their transfer targets as they look to hand Daniel Farke a squad capable of promotion back to the Premier League, it has been claimed.

All change for Leeds following playoff defeat

After their defeat in the Championship play-off final against Southampton, it has been a tough summer for Leeds. They have completed just three permanent deals, landing Joe Rodon after a successful loan spell, signing Jadon Bogle from fellow Yorkshire side Sheffield United and goalkeeper Alex Cairns from Salford City. But they have seen a whole host of names depart.

Archie Gray and Glen Kamara have both left the club in deals worth almost a combined £50m, with the sale of teenage Gray to Spurs key to keeping Leeds compliant with financial fair play rules after missing out on promotion back to the Premier League.

Several loanees have also departed on permanent deals, while long-term servant Luke Ayling has left the club as a free agent alongside Jamie Shackleton and Robin Koch.

Now, there are fears that further departures could be coming soon, with Everton reportedly in talks to sign Wilfried Gnonto in a deal worth around £25m. Meanwhile, Championship player of the year Crysencio Summerville is attracting widespread interest, and Fulham are the most recent side to try and prise him away from Yorkshire this summer.

In a perhaps concerning move for the pair's futures at Elland Road, Leeds are now stepping up interest in a fresh name in attack.

Leeds United chasing 27-goal Championship attacker

That comes with talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook revealing that Leeds and the 49ers Enterprises have "formalised their interest" in Blackburn Rovers forward Sammie Szmodics.

The Irish attacker ended the 2023/24 campaign as the Championship's top goalscorer, finding the net 27 times in 44 appearances, one of which came at Elland Road in a 1-0 win for Rovers.

He drew no shortage of praise from former manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, who dubbed him "incredible" after a first career hat-trick against Cambridge United.

Leeds pursuing deal for "strong" star who'd brilliantly replace Cresswell

The Whites have reportedly made initial contact over a deal to sign the young defender.

ByDan Emery Jul 23, 2024

"The development of Sammie is great to see. He's a team player, he's a goalscorer. He's very good in doing all the things we want, then of course scoring that amount of goals and also even getting assists."

"We always know he can score goals but he's not used to playing a lot of games at this level first of all, he played with Peterborough but not a lot. The way he's scoring goals, the confidence he's playing with and the role he takes as one of the senior players is quite incredible."

But Szmodics is into the final two years of his £15,000-a-week deal at Ewood Park and could leave this summer as a result, with both Leeds and newly-promoted Ipswich Town thought to be keen on signing him. There is no fee mentioned, but Blackburn have already rejected one bid from Ipswich and are thought to be holding out for around £20m.

With Leeds formalising their interest, could that suggest that a departure from their own frontline is imminent?

Lopetegui’s own Osimhen: West Ham ready bid for £48k-p/w "jewel"

Julen Lopetegui and West Ham are on the hunt for a clinical striker, to provide goals for the team and take the burden away from the wide players, such as Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.

The performances of Michail Antonio and Danny Ings haven't been of the standard needed, at least from a goalscoring perspective, with Antonio scoring seven goals in 32 appearances and Ings only scoring one goal, in his 30 appearances in 2023/24.

Michail Antonio for West Ham

There have been many striker links already, including Aston Villa's Jhon Duran, and Borussia Dortmund's Niclas Füllkrug, who could both prove good options to improve their clinical finishing around the box.

West Ham transfer news

According to French outlet L'Equipe, West Ham have entered the race for RC Lens striker, Elye Wahi, along with Leicester City, who are also believed to be interested.

The report mentions Chelsea as another team who registered interest earlier this month, and is now saying the Premier League trio could table the first offer in 'the next few hours'.

Leicester City target Elye Wahi in action for RC Lens.

Wahi made 37 appearances in all competitions for Lens last season, scoring 12 goals, providing four assists – totalling 2,395 minutes of football.

Why Wahi can be West Ham's own Osimhen

Now, of course, Victor Osimhen is widely regarded as a "world-class striker" – as dubbed by Jose Mourinho – having made 32 appearances last campaign for Napoli, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in his 2,476 minutes.

Interestingly, FBref's 'similar players' feature likens Wahi to reported Chelsea target, Osimhen and has the Nigerian striker as Wahi's most comparable striker in Europe's top five leagues.

Stats taken from FBref

Regarded as a "jewel" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Wahi even showed his goal-scoring prowess the season prior, scoring 19 goals in 33 games played. And the metrics show Wahi to be a clinical finisher, who is most dangerous when in and around the box.

Ranking closely in shooting metrics to one of the elites in Europe, Wahi averages 2.89 shots per 90, of which 1.33 are on target, producing an xG of 0.50 per 90. But the 21-year-old can also be involved in the build-up.

Producing 2.66 progressive carries per 90, which ranks in the top 12% among forwards in the top five leagues, Wahi can drive his team forwards using his carrying qualities, as well as provide for others, as seen by his 0.16 assists per 90, ranking higher than Osimhen in this metric.

The Lens striker – who currently earns around £48k per week according to FBref – could prove to be a very good value for money move at the striker position, offering goal threat, but also the ability to link play in attacking zones.

It may be West Ham's London rivals who will be getting their hands on Osimhen, but Lopetegui and the Hammers could be in the mix to land the next best thing.

Angelo Mathews has been named as Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain for the T20I series in the West Indies as Dasun Shanaka, the appointed captain, is yet to join the team because of a delay in obtaining a US transit visa. Mathews has previously led Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, 106 ODIs and 13 T20Is.As it stands on Sunday, Shanaka is yet to receive the visa, and as such seems likely to miss the entire T20I series – his first assignment as the new T20I captain. He will hope to make the ODI leg of the tour at least, which starts on March 9.Shanaka did have a proper US transit visa – valid for five years – on a previous passport. But as he had lost that passport two years ago, visa officers told him they must do additional checks, meaning they were not able to greenlight the visa for this tour in time for him to make the flight. This news is the latest setback for Sri Lanka, who also lost the services of Lahiru Kumara for this tour after testing positive for Covid-19 in the days before departure for the West Indies.Sri Lanka’s multi-format tour of the Caribbean kicks off on March 3, with the T20I series.

O tal do elemento surpresa

Offer made: Aston Villa target "dangerous" star who’d make Felix unplayable

Aston Villa are enjoying a fitting summer transfer window after qualifying for the Champions League with a top-four Premier League finish last term, showing the requisite ambition.

Of course, Douglas Luiz had to be sold to Juventus in a PSR-centred sacrifice, while Moussa Diaby is also completing a £52m transfer to Al-Ittihad, but the club-record signing petered out after an electric start to life in the Midlands and would see a huge financial benefit collected.

Even further up the field, Jhon Duran's protracted exit saga with numerous clubs may well come to a head in the coming days, with West Ham United fighting to sign the powerful Colombian, 20, albeit unable to agree a deal with Monchi and Co.

Duran's undoubted talent is tainted by erratic antics, with his capricious nature suggesting that his sale wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for Emery's squad, built from togetherness and coherence.

Duran's exit would leave star striker Ollie Watkins isolated in the attacking rank, and thus moves are being made to sign an exciting successor.

Aston Villa transfer news

Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg has released an update on Aston Villa's pursuit of Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier, claiming that an offer has been made to the German.

Beier, 21, enjoyed a tremendous top-flight breakout campaign last season and is consequently earning the attention of some of Europe's biggest outfits – with Chelsea and invincible Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen also interested.

Villa have submitted a concrete proposal to Beier and his representatives but have not yet entered discussions with Hoffenheim. Still, with a €30m (£25m) release clause, this could be an affordable deal for an exciting Duran replacement.

How Max Beier would fit in at Aston Villa

Beier returned to Hoffenheim full-time one year ago after enjoying two years on loan with Hannover 96 in the 2. Bundesliga, scoring ten goals across two league terms.

It's fair to say that he has come on leaps and bounds since moving to top-flight level, finishing as the Bundesliga's fifth-highest goalscorer last season with 16 strikes from 33 outings – 29 starts.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 14% of forwards in the division for goals scored and the top 7% for progressive passes received per 90, with his fleet feet allowing him to dart into space, latch onto passes and wreak havoc in the final third.

Maximilian Beier

His pace and deft dribbling ability have earned him praise for his multi-skilled style, with talent scout Jacek Kulig even pronouncing him as "much more than just a goalscorer”, while having also been hailed as "incredibly fast" and "dangerous" by Hoffenheim director, Alexander Rosen.

Because of this dynamic ability, Beier could prove to be an excellent signing to enhance and fortify the fluency and cohesion of Emery's frontline, perhaps even striking a fine partnership with fellow Lions transfer target Joao Felix.

Imagine Max Beier & Joao Felix

Felix enjoyed a promising loan spell with Barcelona last season but is not set to complete a permanent transfer to Camp Nou given the La Liga giants' financial troubles.

The Atletico Madrid star, whose fractured relationship with Diego Simeone has seemingly precluded his chance of remaining at the Wanda Metropolitano, is on Villa's radar, with Portuguese outlet Record claiming that the player 'has his bags packed' in the eventuality that Villa do make their move in the coming weeks.

Joao Felix for Barcelona.

The Portugal international scored ten goals and added six assists across all competitions, with his La Blaugrana boss Xavi even describing him as the "difference-maker" after one influential performance.

Felix has long been criticised for his lack of prolificness despite an incredible level of technical talent, but he ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90 following his efforts at Barca.

The 24-year-old's silky-smooth movements on the left flank could add quite the injection of flair and panache to Emery's system, perhaps even providing the skills to cement the club's exciting stature, succeeding in Europe and retaining their place in the Premier League's top-four.

Felix, moreover, has the kind of creative game that would enhance the attacking performances of Beier, with the Germany international only missing 11 big chances in the Bundesliga last season despite scoring 16 times.

To put that in perspective, Watkins, whose incredible goalscoring season fired the Villa toward newfound heights, but his 19-goal tally in the English top flight also saw 22 big chances squandered. That is an impressive rate of scoring but further underscores just how exciting Beier's addition to the fold might be.

And of course, Beier's quality as 'more than just a goalscorer' makes for the perfect supplementation for a player such as Felix, who found his feet in Catalonia last year and could now truly rise to the fore in England's Midlands, with his strike rate sustained by Beier's protean threat and Watkins' playmaking prowess, winning the Premier League's Playmaker of the Season award last year (with 13 assists).

There's work to be done with both deals, but if Villa, with the pull of the Champions League now at their ground, manage to pull both off, there's a real chance that last season's success could be trumped and then some.

Villa still keen on signing £55m "monster" who plays like Fabian Ruiz

Unai Emery is still keen on landing a long term target this summer…

Australian cricket ponders private investment options

Any changes to the funding model in the sport would create vigorous debate and raise various concerns

Australian cricket would join other sports looking to private equity investment, and the kind of commercial arrangement it maintained in the first 15 years after the World Series Cricket revolution, under one of several models being widely discussed in industry circles as administrators begin to think about the game’s next strategic moves.ESPNcricinfo has learned that private ownership of BBL clubs is just one of numerous private investment options currently being discussed, as administrators keep an especially close eye on events across the Tasman and the prospective involvement of Silver Lake in the commercial affairs of New Zealand Rugby. That model, whereby Silver Lake – an American technology investment firm currently managing funds worth about US$60 billion – has reportedly bid around A$450 million for a 15% stake in a new and separate entity to run the commercial affairs of NZR and the showpiece All Blacks brand, would be a 21st century version of the arrangement struck in 1979.Back then, Kerry Packer bought not just broadcast rights but essentially the entire commercial wing of the Australian Cricket Board, leaving decisions around how the game was sold in the hands of his company PBL marketing until 1994. PBL Marketing’s approach wrought enormous change to the game and its commercialisation, albeit on onerously cheap terms for Packer as the Board of the day, led by Sir Donald Bradman, had little understanding of broadcast rights value derived from advertising. The ACB reclaimed control of its own broadcast rights and marketing destiny 27 years ago, around the same time that the value of both areas began to climb sharply, leading to more than two decades of continuous success in the game’s commercial fortunes. The players have been among the greatest beneficiaries of this period. The third scenario that has been discussed, at least informally at state and CA board levels, would be for the commercial functions of the BBL to be farmed out in a similar manner to an entity separate to the governing body and sold in part to private equity. These types of arrangements would bring an additional injection of capital to Australian cricket at a time when Covid-19 and the current dispute with the free-to-air broadcaster Seven West Media have brought hitherto unseen pressure to bear, but also bring new ideas to the game’s administration.Any kind of move to a model where private equity takes a stake in CA’s commercial operations, in return for an upfront payment likely to be comfortably beyond the A$500 million range, would be bound to stir a major debate across the game and its followers, but is now closer to a serious discussion than at any time in the past decade or more. One of the chief concerns likely to be raised would be whether Australian cricket, having gone in an ever more commercial direction over the past 40 years, could improve its trajectory by moving still further that way.Other red flags would concern the loss of total control of the business of cricket to owners and entities primarily concerned not with growing the game itself but growing their returns on investment in it. That difference of perspective is likely to cause many a flashpoint about the balance between crickets three formats, and spending in areas beneath the top level. Such conflicts are familiar to followers of other sports that have been heavily financed by private investors. The IPL is the biggest example of private investment in cricket•BCCI

Silver Lake, for instance, have made long-term investments in UFC, the NBA’s New York Knicks, the NHL’s New York Rangers, and Manchester City, all sports and leagues far more steeped in private capital than anything in Australian sport, let alone cricket. Private ownership is best known in cricket through the prism of T20, and the extremely wealthy owners of IPL clubs in particular. In Britain a report by Oakwell Sports, who advised private equity firm CVC on its investment into Premiership Rugby, suggested that the ECB’s start-up costs for The Hundred would be significantly reduced if stakes in the teams were sold to investors by using a franchise model. While there has been widespread hesitance about private investment in professional sport in Australia, it is a concept that has long been championed by the likes of the Australian Cricketers Association director Neil Maxwell, its chairman Greg Dyer and president Shane Watson, who told ESPNcricinfo this week that the broad concept needed to be re-examined more than a decade after CA first looked into the idea of selling minority stakes in the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Thunder prior to the launch of the BBL.At the same time, more than a decade of increasingly corporatised thinking on the CA Board and its state association equivalents have left administrators looking ever more widely for fresh sources of cash to reinvest in the game. This is particularly so at a time when the previously exponential growth of broadcast rights value now appears finally to be plateauing after about 30 years of seldom going anywhere but up.New Zealand Rugby’s blueprint, currently being pitched to the game’s many stakeholders, calls for the setup of a new subsidiary, CommercialCo, to be wholly responsible for maximising the value of rugby’s commercial rights. In June last year, Rugby Australia confirmed similar discussions with another American private equity firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, about their possible involvement in the annual Super Rugby competition.”We’ve had good inbound interest from UK and American private equity firms and I’m very open to continuing those discussions at a Super Rugby level,” the RA chief executive Hamish McLennan told the . “The time is right to have these discussions as we look to alternate funding mechanisms for the game. Anything I can do to free cash up to reinvest in grassroots rugby will be good for the game.”CA is on much firmer ground than its rugby equivalent, but strategic discussions about the next major growth opportunities for the game are only set to ramp up over the next year given that the governing body’s own Australian Cricket Strategy runs from 2017 to 2022.
