PCB hands Umar Akmal three-year ban from all cricket

“Seventeen months ago, I made a mistake which caused damage to my cricket and career,” Akmal said in a video released by PCB on Wednesday as part of his reintegration and rehabilitation process. “I learnt a lot during this time and due to that mistake Pakistan cricket’s reputation suffered badly. I ask for forgiveness from the PCB and from cricket fans around the world.”Akmal admitted that the ban has been a “very difficult period for him”.”Some people approached me but I was unable to report the same to the anti-corruption unit, due to which I had to face a 12-month ban. I couldn’t play cricket despite being a cricketer.”I learned a lot during this time and today I confess before all of you that that mistake brought disrepute to Pakistan cricket.”

While the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced Akmal’s ban to 12 months, they hit him with a fine of 4.25 million Pakistani Rupees for breaching the PCB’s Anti-Corruption code.Akmal urged his fellow cricketers to keep their careers “clean” by staying away from all “suspicious activities”.”I, Umar Akmal, would like to request all of you, as ambassadors of the sport, to stay away from any suspicious activities. If any suspicious individuals approach you, please report it to the anti-corruption unit in a timely manner so that your record and career remain clean.”

Fabrizio Romano: Wolves make enquiry to sign £40,000-p/w Premier League ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers, thinking about spending some of the reported £54m fee gained through the sale of Pedro Neto to Chelsea, have reportedly made their first enquiry to sign a Premier League ace.

Wolves transfer news

Whilst it's easy to point out the impact that Neto made in the Midlands, his injury record could yet make Wolves' decision to part ways with his services a stroke of genius, given the aforementioned fee that they received. We saw last season how they managed to cope after losing Ruben Neves and will now have a similar task ahead of them without the Portuguese winger.

He seems set to leave this summer

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 13, 2024

In Neves' place, Wolves welcomed Joao Gomes, who has proved to be an excellent addition to Gary O'Neil's side. Now, in place of Neto, they've been linked with a move for former Manchester City academy star and current Ajax winger Carlos Forbs. With plenty of money likely left over even if they sign the 20-year-old, however, those at the Molinuex are reportedly looking to strengthen elsewhere.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have made an enquiry to sign Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace, alongside Southampton and Leicester City. The experienced goalkeeper, who earns a reported £40k-a-week, wants to leave Palace this summer and is currently assessing his options.

With mistakes creeping into Jose Sa's game in the last two seasons, a second option in the form of Johnstone would be a wise addition for Wolves. What's more, doubts over Dan Bentley's future at the club this summer means that the Midlands club would need an additional shot-stopper, no matter the recent form of Sa. It would then be down to O'Neil to pick his number one.

"Brilliant" Johnstone can compete with Sa

Two goalkeepers who could battle it out for a starting place, Wolves may suddenly be left with two strong and experienced options to call on in the Premier League this season. England international Johnstone has quite the decision to make, however, given that both Leicester and Southampton are also interested in his signature.

Praised during his time at West Bromwich Albion by Sam Allardyce following the Baggies' 2020 draw against Liverpool, the former manager said via TalkSport: “The defence was so good yesterday that Sam had little or nothing to do.

"That one brilliant save was a magnificent save when we needed it, but we limited Liverpool to hardly any shots on target and we had more than them. We’ve got to keep that up but know that Sam is there when needed and not make him too busy.”

Those standards haven't slipped four years later, either, and Johnstone now looks increasingly likely to leave Crystal Palace in search of a consistent number one spot that he could yet find at Wolves.

Instead of Osimhen: Chelsea plot hijack for Drogba-esque £50m striker

There's been a lot of noise around Chelsea's transfer window, and admittedly, Enzo Maresca has found quite the in-tray on his desk upon arriving this summer as the club's new head coach.

That final phrasing is important: the running of Todd Boehly's regime means that the Italian's modus operandi centres around the squad and the tactics – transfers and the more clerical side of the job fall to sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart and a host of further office-based employees.

To his credit, Maresca has been candid in his comments regarding the Blues' bloated first team, saying: "Things can still happen in terms of new signings and outgoings."

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

Conor Gallagher has joined Atletico Madrid and further departures are expected before next weekend's deadline. That said, Chelsea could yet finish a busy summer of spending with a final addition, and centre-forward is the area of concern.

Chelsea eyeing new striker

Much of the chatter regarding No. 9 has circed around a possible swoop for Napoli's Victor Osimhen, who has been expected to leave during this window for most of the year but is at risk of finding himself marooned away from the market due to his outfit's insistence that his £111m release clause must be met.

With Romelu Lukaku set to sign for the Serie A side, a pathway might be opened up for the Nigerian's signing, but it still won't be an easy deal, and Chelsea must consider an alternative.

Well, that man could arrive in the form of Brentford's Ivan Toney, who too is awaiting a transfer this summer and has been mooted for a £50m move to the Saudi Pro League's Al Ahli – albeit with only a £35m offer having arrived so far.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

However, according to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are weighing up a hijack for the England international, 28, and have actually contacted their neighbours to determine a possible deal.

Why Toney would be the perfect Osimhen alternative

Toney is understandably tempted by the pull of Saudi Arabia, with the suggestion that Al Ahli have offered him a significant increase on his £20k-per-week salary, with the proposed terms totalling a £325k weekly pay packet – a colossal 1525% rise.

Ivan Toney for England

Cut from the cloth of a traditional striker with modified technical skills and an intense work rate, Toney has grown into one of the Premier League's finest and highest-profile players under Thomas Frank, scoring 36 goals and adding 11 assists across 83 top-flight fixtures.

His manager has praised him for having the "mindset of a lion" and he has proved himself among the finest in the division, with his haul in 2022/23 bettered only by Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

Toney also boasts an impressive link-up quality that stems from his sharpness in transition, brutish physical presence and dominance during aerial battles – Toney ranks among the top 16% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for aerial duels won per 90 (3.35), as per FBref.

In some ways, his skillset would actually make him a better fit than Napoli's Osimhen, who is one of the world's finest finishers but would arrive for over double the cost and has an injury record that leaves something to be desired.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

The 26-year-old, who earns £211k per week, has been described as "one of the best strikers in the world" by Manchester City's Joao Cancelo, posting 76 goals and 18 assists across 133 matches for his team and winning the 2022/23 Serie A title.

However, injuries and Napoli's staggering decline last season left him frustrated, and he now ranks only among the top 33% of strikers in Europe for non-penalty goals scored per 90.

Class is permanent and there's no doubt his athleticism and pedigree would leave him in good standing to succeed at Stamford Bridge, but it would be something of a risk for a player that would cost a fee in the same ballpark as Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Toney would be a more than viable alternative, especially as he's been likened to none other than Didier Drogba.

A "Drogba-esque" striker

In 2021, former Icelandic footballer Hermann Hreidarsson remarked that Toney has a bit of Drogba about him and is even a "world-class" player.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

His on-pitch performance over the three years since has hardly dispelled such claims, with Toney's Brentford teammate Christian Nørgaard claiming: "I heard someone in the changing room comparing Ivan with Didier Drogba. I think he looked a bit like him actually – the way he kept the ball, his first touch and his passes.

“He won every single header and he is a right player.”

Drogba is a Premier League Hall-of-Famer and is widely regarded among Chelsea's greatest-ever players. Signed from Marseille for £24m in 2004, the Ivorian plundered 250 goal contributions across 381 matches over two spells, notably winning the Champions League and four league titles.

A 6 foot 2 titan of a striker, Drogba was the ultimate big-game player, scoring 12 goals across 17 career cup finals and emerging on the golden side of the tie 11 times.

His influence stretched beyond mere goalscoring, however, using his immense strength and electric bursts of pace to bully defenders, always impressive with his technical quality and ability to pass fluently and maintain pace and gusto in the build-up.

He was, simply, one of the best. He was also 26 years old upon first arriving in west London and took a couple of seasons to really get going as one of the division's finest.

Toney could emulate Drogba's illustrious success and then some. He has the skills and he has the tried-and-tested pedigree, with a hunger to perform at the forefront of division too.

O clima no Flamengo é hostil.

Placar agregado nesses jogos: 11 a 1.

Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes blossom into form as Leicestershire hit by Surrey fightback

England pair add unbroken 160-run stand after visitors limited to 375

Matt Roller16-Apr-2021

It is cherry blossom season in South London. The pubs in Vauxhall have started to open their doors again, and 30-somethings sat outside cafés as the sun burst through the clouds on Friday morning. A stroll through Kennington Park confirmed that this was the first day of the county season in this part of the world on which a thick coat was not required, and there was a sense of wistful optimism for the summer ahead among the handful of staff inside The Oval before the start of play.Jamie Overton finished an over to Leicestershire’s homegrown centurion Sam Evans that was interrupted by bad light on Thursday evening, and Amar Virdi twirled in from the Vauxhall End for two balls. And then, a deafening noise: . That sound, from the building site neighbouring the pavilion, was the incongruous soundtrack of a low-key day which saw Surrey edge their way into a position of dominance, thanks primarily to an unbroken 160-run stand between Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes. The new development that caused such a racket, One Oval Square, will provide an extra 2000 seats, additional events and hospitality spaces, and new facilities for members including a restaurant and bar. Surrey hope that it will be completed by the end of May, in time for their T20 Blast campaign and England’s ODI against Sri Lanka, by which point fans will be back in the ground and the summer will be in full flow. It is a tantalising prospect which has loomed over the Championship, where the absence of a gentle murmur from the members has been keenly felt in the opening two rounds of the season. The loud backdrop added to the sense often present during County Championship fixtures at The Oval: that while the game itself has a certain importance, it is a prelude or a postscript to something altogether more significant. The Surrey side this week features six internationals and three other players – Overton, Virdi and Jamie Smith – who expect to graduate to that level at some stage in their careers; the contrast with a Leicestershire side with 13 international caps between them (for Germany and the Netherlands) is stark. It has been epitomised by those who have played the lead roles in the first two days of this fixture. Evans, an academy graduate whose determined hundred was his first in a Leicestershire shirt, was the protagonist on the first day, but it was Pope and Foakes who dominated Friday’s play. After Surrey fought back to bowl Leicestershire out for 375 – a useful first-innings total, but not the one they had eyed at 298 for 3 – they needed a significant partnership after slipping to 93 for 3 on the stroke of tea, but a wicketless final session means they can press on towards a lead in the morning. But again, the game at hand is only one part of the equation, especially for the pair whose runs were particularly important. Pope has averaged 23.00 for England since the start of last summer, and came into this match after scores of 22 and 0 against Gloucestershire last week. While Leicestershire’s bowlers were generous, straying on to his hip too regularly, a pair of straight drives back past Ben Mike’s right hand betrayed portrayed a man in form; England’s selectors will be hopeful, on this evidence, that his lean run in Tests has been nothing more than a blip. For Foakes, too, these were useful runs, backing up his 133 in the opening round of games. Foakes’ brilliance behind the stumps means that he is unlikely to play international cricket as a specialist batter, but the prospect of Jos Buttler – and even Jonny Bairstow – being away on IPL duty during the first Test against New Zealand in June opens the door for him to play a fourth consecutive Test as England’s keeper. He rode his luck, dropped twice on 33 – by Hassan Azad, at short leg, and by Harry Swindells behind the stumps – but grew in fluency, cracking a pull through midwicket to reach fifty as the floodlights took over from the haze. When the sun was still high, Leicestershire had been well-placed to press towards 500, which would have been their first such total in the Championship since May 2017. Instead, Lewis Hill and Evans fell in quick succession, and it took some bottom-handed clubbing over midwicket from Mike to ensure that they secured a fourth batting point, which was achieved with two balls to spare. Kemar Roach took his first Surrey wickets in a fiery burst, knocking Swindells’ middle stump out of the ground and having Callum Parkinson caught at slip while fending at a short ball, and Virdi cleaned up the tail.As was the case against Hampshire in their opening fixture, Leicestershire leaked runs too freely, straying onto the pads and dropping short and wide all too often. Gavin Griffiths was the pick of their attack, strangling Mark Stoneman down the leg side and pinning Hashim Amla lbw with a quick yorker, and Parkinson won a tight lbw shout against Rory Burns on the stroke of tea. They will reflect tonight that the game has started to slip away from them, but on a flat pitch, they still have every chance of forcing a draw.

Former Celtic star Matt O'Riley's new employer, Brighton owner and chairman Tony Bloom, has provided an update on his injury after sustaining a horror challenge just moments into his debut last week.

The Hoops were very busy over the course of the summer, as manager Brendan Rodgers was keen to keep his side at full strength, as he eyes another campaign of winning everything that is on offer in Scotland, but lost O'Riley late in the day to the South coast club.

The Scottish champions allowed Mikey Johnston to leave and re-join West Brom on a permanent basis after his impressive loan spell last season. Other departures saw Hyeon-gyu Oh leave, as well as Sead Haksabanovic, Tomoki Iwata, and of course O’Riley.

It could have been worse for Celtic, as star man Kyogo Furuhashi was also being linked with a move away from Celtic Park. The 29-year-old emerged as a potential target for Manchester City as they looked at options to replace Julian Alvarez.

Pep Guardiola is said to be a “huge” fan of the forward and was left impressed by his performances in pre-season, especially when he played against the Blues in the USA. Kyogo was at it again on Sunday, as he played a big role in the club’s win over Rangers.

One of Celtic’s departures from this summer has already suffered a setback at his new club, and they have now provided an update on the player’s injury.

Brighton provide O'Riley injury update

Celtic’s biggest departure during the summer was midfielder Matt O’Riley, as he joined Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal believed to be worth an initial £25m and up to £30m. The 23-year-old made his debut for the Seagulls in last week’s Carabao Cup tie against Crawley Town, but he was forced off after six minutes with ankle ligament damage.

Now, Brighton have released a statement on the player’s injury, with chairman Bloom hoping to have the midfielder back later this season after his successful ankle surgery.

Bloom told the Albion Podcast on the club’s website, via Sussex World: “We are hugely disappointed with that horror challenge on Matt O’Riley. He had his operation today (Monday), and that has been successful.

"We are all really looking forward to seeing him back at the later part of the year. It's really important to bring the right players with the right personality. From what I have seen and from what I have heard, everyone is fitting in well.”

O’Riley left Celtic Park this summer having joined the club in January 2022 from MK Dons. He played 124 times in Glasgow, scoring 27 goals and chipping in with an impressive 35 assists. The midfielder, who has also established himself now as a senior Denmark international, played a pivotal role in Celtic winning league and cup titles, and Hoops fans will certainly wish him well in his recovery.
