Sam Robson's century provides the ballast as Middlesex batting finds form

Leicestershire’s success limited on opening day at Merchant Taylors’ School

Middlesex 280 for 3 (Robson 138*) vs LeicestershireSam Robson’s first century since the season’s opening day gave Middlesex the early advantage in their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Leicestershire at Merchant Taylors’ School. After acting captain Tim Murtagh won the toss, the former England opener struck 13 fours in his unbeaten 138, sharing half-century stands with Josh De Caires, Stevie Eskinazi and Daryl Mitchell as the hosts reached 280 for 3 before bad light ended play three overs ahead of the scheduled close.Ben Mike, Ed Barnes and Abidine Sakande took a wicket apiece for the visitors.Robson was positive from the outset, getting well forward in defence against the seamers. Boundaries though were few and far between, a straight drive off Sakande a rare exception. At the other end De Caires, in only his second game for the hosts, survived a bang on the helmet as he and Robson raised 50 for the first wicket, only the second time a Middlesex opening pair had managed the feat all season. The stand reached 73 before De Caires chopped a short one from Ben Mike into his stumps, part of an eventful spell for the seamer which included an official warning for running on the pitch.Robson’s 50 came soon afterwards from 72 balls with four fours and he and Eskinazi prospered either side of lunch despite some miserly bowling from Will Davies and Callum Parkinson. The 50 partnership was raised before fate took a hand and Eskinazi pulled up after taking a sharp single and had to retire injured.Max Holden, recalled to the first XI in the wake of skipper Peter Handscomb’s positive Covid test, survived an early caught behind shout to hit some stylish boundaries. However, he failed to make the most of being dropped at second slip by Marcus Harris off Barnes, edging the same bowler through to wicketkeeper Josh Inglis shortly afterwards.Robson though continued unperturbed, cutting Sakande to the point boundary to reach his century from 172 balls on the stroke of tea.The centurion rode his luck a little in the final session, flashing a couple through the slips and surviving a confident appeal for lbw from Davies. But New Zealand international Mitchell played with increasing assurance for his 38 and it was a shock when he drove Sakande to Harry Swindells with the pair just shy of a century stand.

He outshone Onana: Emery must now unleash 8/10 Aston Villa star

Aston Villa reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, overcoming a potential banana skin against League One outfit Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 away from home. It was a professional performance from the Villans, who now go into the hat for the next round, to be drawn on Wednesday night.

Unai Emery’s side did not actually take the lead until the second half, with Wycombe making life tough for the Villans in the first 45 minutes. However, Emiliano Bunedia, in his first start after picking up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2023, gave the Premier League outfit the lead.

Jhon Duran, irresistible as ever, got himself on the scoresheet 30 minutes after Buendia’s opener. The Columbian, who has five goals this season, scored from the penalty spot to double Villa’s lead.

The hosts managed to pull back a late goal in the 95th minute through Richard Kone. However, it was too late for the League One side, and Villa made it safely through to the next round.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

There were certainly some standout performers against the Chairboys, with Villa’s quality unsurprisingly shining through. One player who was particularly impressive was Amadou Onana.

Onana’s stats vs. Wycombe

Belgian international midfielder Onana has been in superb form for Villa this term, and worked hard in the hour he played at Adams Park. The former Everton midfielder has already scored three times for his new club, in just seven appearances.

It was something of a surprise that the Belgian started against the third-tier outfit on Tuesday. Emery has selected him from the start in all of Villa’s games so far this season, and the trip to Adams Park presented him with a chance to rotate.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

With that being said, Onana did start and was unsurprisingly impressive throughout the hour he spent on the pitch. He received a 7/10 post-match rating from John Townley of Birmingham Live. He noted that, whilst the Belgian ‘is a few levels above’ the Wycombe side, ‘they did their best to limit’ his impact on the game.

Onana’s Sofascore stats suggest he was busy throughout his night’s work. He had 60 touches of the ball, and completed 46 from 54 attempted passes, with a pass accuracy of 85%. The midfielder also completed two interceptions and won one duel.

It was a steady performance from Onana, who continues his good start to life at Villa Park. However, he was perhaps not the standout player on the night, with Bunedia also performing well against Wycombe.

Bunedia’s stats vs. Wycombe

It has been a long road to recovery for Buendia since he ruptured his ACL a little over one year ago. It is fair to say that the Argentine’s first start since his injury went superbly. Not only did he skipper the Villans on the night, but also managed to get on the scoresheet.

It was a smart finish from the former Norwich City midfielder, who leapt highest inside the penalty box to meet a deflected ball that ricocheted off the defender. He looped his header over Franco Ravizzoli in the Wycombe goal to give his side the lead.

It was a performance that earned him an 8/10 rating from Townley following the game. The journalist praised him for how well he ‘linked the midfield and attack’, crediting him for a ‘brilliant header’.

Indeed, his stats on Sofascore also reflected such an impressive performance. The Argentine had 48 touches against Wycombe, completing 85% of his passes and creating one chance. Off the ball, he worked hard, winning seven from 13 duels and his only tackle.

It was no doubt a performance that would have pleased both Buendia and Emery, given the length of his injury. It may put him in line for his first Premier League start since the 2022/23 campaign, ahead of Villa’s next outing against Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

It would not be unsurprising to see Emery unleash him in the top-flight next.

Hamish Rutherford fifty keeps Glamorgan punching for knock-out place

Surrey suffer rare shocker in five-wicket defeat, with only Clarke standing firm

ECB Reporters Network03-Aug-2021

Glamorgan made it three wins from five Royal London Cup matches and stayed in the hunt for qualification for the knock-out stages with a five-wicket hammering of Surrey.Surrey made just 132 from 44.1 overs with only Rikki Clarke standing firm with 35. It was a total Glamorgan reached with ease thanks to an innings of 58 from 52 balls from Hamish Rutherford. This was Surrey’s first defeat of the competition as they had a day to forget. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat on a glorious Cardiff morning, but Mark Stoneman nicked Michael Hogan’s first ball of the day to Nick Selman, who took a neat catch at second slip, and that set the tone for a rare Surrey shocker.Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson nearly claimed a stunning catch at mid-on to dismiss Hashim Amla off the bowling of Lukas Carey, but he unfortunately spilled the ball. Carey nonetheless dismissed Ryan Patel, again caught smartly by Selman at slip, and then Amla went too – this time caught behind by Tom Cullen for just four.Jamie Smith was the next to go, caught by Cullen from Joe Cooke’s bowling, leaving Surrey at 35 for 4.Such a position called for responsible batting, not something Nico Reifer delivered when he smacked Andrew Salter up in the air to be caught by Rutherford.Tim David also fell to Salter – Selman again the catcher – as Surrey slipped to 63 for 6.Salter finished with career-best List A figures of 3 for 37 and when Clarke was finally dismissed by Andy Gorvin, Surrey had inched their way to a below-par total.Veteran Clarke – who will retire at the end of the season after a fine career – was Gorvin’s first Glamorgan wicket.Carey finished with 2 for 28 and the outstanding Hogan 1 for just 18 runs from his 10 overs.Rutherford struck two superb boundaries through cover in the same Matt Dunn over at the start of Glamorgan’s reply, but the Surrey quick did bowl Selman for six. Rutherford’s calm batting – it was particularly pleasant to watch his off-side strokes – took Glamorgan to 52 for 1 after 10 overs.New Zealand’s Rutherford reached 50 off just 45 balls with 10 fours as he and Steven Reingold, who scored 40, put Glamorgan in complete control.Rutherford slog swept Dan Moriarty for six into the Sophia Gardens stands to bring up the 100 and although he was caught next ball, he had already done the hard work.Billy Root was dismissed for 18 with Glamorgan within one run of victory, but Cullen finished the job with 23.1 overs still to be bowled of the home side’s second innings.

Why Friedkin is now set to miss out on signing Gareth Southgate for Everton

Everton have been dealt a blow in their efforts to bring Dan Friedkin’s primary target to replace Sean Dyche to the club, according to a new update.

Everton manager news

There was enormous relief on show at Goodison Park last weekend, as the Blues finally picked up their first victory of the season in the Premier League, winning 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace. The importance of the result cannot be overstated, given the negativity leading up to the game, with Everton at risk of being adrift in the relegation battle before the campaign had barely got underway.

For Dyche, it was particularly massive, with the Englishman battling to save his job after such a poor period for his team, during which time a host of different candidates have emerged to take his place in the Goodison dugout.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Both David Moyes and Gareth Southgate have been touted as option for the Blues, with the former potentially keen on a reunion and the latter not yet in a new job since exiting England after Euro 2024. Meanwhile, West Brom boss Carlos Corberan could also be a shrewd choice, having guided his side to the top of the Championship table currently.

Everton dealt blow over Friedkin managerial target

According to a new report from Give Me Sport, Southgate is hesitant to put his name in the hat for the potential Everton job, due to the fact that he is eyeing a move to Manchester United instead. Friedkin has reportedly eyed him up as his preferred choice to be Dyche’s successor, should he be relieved of his duties soon.

The 54-year-old is aware that Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure at Old Trafford, possibly even being one or two defeats away from losing his job, so he is waiting in the wings. He is described as a “genuine target for INEOS”, perhaps in part because he has a good relationship with sporting director Dan Ashworth.

If Southgate is the man Friedkin wants to take Everton into the future, then seeing him drop out of the race would be a blow, but at the same time, it shouldn’t be considered a disaster. He clearly did an impressive job in charge of England over eight years, reaching two major finals in Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, but he also had his detractors in that time.

There were plenty who felt that Southgate’s playing style was too negative, failing to get the best out of a supremely gifted group of players, and his only stint in club management came with Middlesbrough, who got relegated under him.

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 1, 2024

The Englishman could be a good option, but not getting him shouldn’t be treated as the end of the world, and as it stands, Dyche looks to have enough credit in the bank anyway. He is still undoubtedly under pressure, but the Palace win has given him some leeway ahead of the upcoming international break.

Tottenham think signing £29m Maddison alternative would be game-changing

Tottenham chiefs think signing a £29 million alternative to James Maddison could take them to another level, with some questions having surrounded the £170,000-per-week playmaker at points this season.

James Maddison lashes back at critics after Tottenham form

Lately, the former Leicester City star has got on the scoresheet more regularly – bagging a goal in each of Spurs’ last two matches against Ferencvaros in the Europa League and Brighton in the Premier League – but Maddison’s also had to face some critics so far this term.

Maddison missed out on a place at Euro 2024 and wasn’t picked for Lee Carsley’s latest Three Lions squad, with the 27-year-old arguably struggling overall since he sustained an injury against Chelsea last season, following an exhilarating start to his career at N17.

His first goal of the season came during a 3-1 win over Brentford late last month, and speaking after that contest, Maddison responded to critique over his lack of numbers in the final third this calendar year.

“The team is always the most important,” said Maddison on his goalscoring record. “I would have been happy with my performance and how I played regardless of whether I got the goal. It obviously helped us in the game because we got that little cushion.

“It kind of shuts up a few people in the background who think the goals and assists do matter more than what they probably do. I am an attacking player who has always scored goals and always got assists, that’s my job.

“So when you are not doing that and even if you feel like you are playing well personally, helping the team, the gaffer is happy with what I’m doing, for some games you have it where I feel like I play really well in the build-up and help the team progress but you don’t get a goal or assist to show for that.

“And then people start questioning the numbers, so sometimes you have to take the outside noise with a pinch of salt, but on the other hand I love scoring goals, and it was a nice feeling.”

In any case, if manager Ange Postecoglou wishes to make good on his promise of silverware in north London, it could be wise for chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange to weigh up quality stand-ins for Maddison – in the event of injury or a drop in form.

All the Premier League’s elite title contenders, Man City especially, have one thing in common – significant strength in depth.

Tottenham see Georgiy Sudakov as next-level signing

With this in mind, Spanish media are reporting that Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder Georgiy Sudakov is on Lange’s radar as different option to Maddison. Indeed, it is believed Tottenham chiefs view Sudakov as a signing which could “raise the level of their game”, with Shakhtar apparently valuing the Ukranian starlet at around £29 million.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Ukraine.

The price tag is an encouraging one, especially considering the 22-year-old’s phenomenal start to 2024/2025. Sudakov boasts seven goals from nine league starts already this term, impressive numbers for a midfield player, and he’s been called an “exceptionally talented” player by his coach, Marino Pusic.

“He is an exceptionally talented footballer. Talent comes from nature or God, but you have to do something with it to develop it,” said Pusic.

“As we always say, hard work beats talent. Sudakov is a player who can and wants to work hard, develops every day, is a smart footballer, and can learn very quickly. All these are characteristics that will make him better.”

Virat Kohli to step down as India's T20I captain after T20 World Cup

“I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket.”

Chopra: Batting form in last two years may have forced Kohli to step down

Virat Kohli has announced he will step down as India’s T20I captain after the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup. He wants to continue as Test and ODI captain, however.Kohli announced his decision on Twitter, saying he made it with his workload in mind as a three-format player, and that he has already spoken about it with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah, and the selectors. He said he arrived at his decision after “a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people”, including India head coach Ravi Shastri and the white-ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who has already led India in 19 T20Is when Kohli has been rested.Related

Bhuvneshwar's form a concern? 'Not at all, his experience will be priceless' says Kohli

Was it Kohli's own decision to give up India's T20I captaincy? Is Dhoni part of a larger plan?

Though the BCCI is yet to name a successor, Rohit is likely to be the frontrunner.”Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian team in Test and ODI Cricket,” Kohli said. “I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward.” The development comes exactly eight days after Kohli sat with the selectors to finalise the India squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be played in the UAE in October-November.”Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time,” Kohli said. “After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I’ve decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.”In a BCCI statement, president Ganguly said the decision was made keeping “the future roadmap” in mind.”Virat has been a true asset for Indian Cricket and has led with aplomb,” he said. :He is one of the most successful captains in all the formats. The decision has been made keeping in mind the future roadmap. We thank Virat for his tremendous performance as the T20I Captain. We wish him all the best for the upcoming World Cup and beyond and hope that he continues to score plenty of runs for India.”Shah said he had been in talks with Kohli “for the last six months” over his workload. “I have been in discussions with Virat and the leadership group for the last six months and the decision has been thought through. Virat will continue to contribute as a player and as a senior member of the side in shaping the future course of Indian cricket.”Kohli’s announcement comes close on the heels of MS Dhoni being appointed India’s mentor for the T20 World Cup•Associated Press

Kohli took charge as T20I captain in 2017 after MS Dhoni stepped down. Kohli has so far led India in 45 T20Is, of which India have won 27, lost 14 and tied two. As captain, he has scored 1502 runs at an average of 48.45 and a strike rate of 143.18, with 12 fifties including a best of 94 not out in a successful chase of 208 against West Indies in Hyderabad.Since the start of 2017, Kohli has been the third-highest run-getter in T20Is overall, and the highest among India batters ahead of Rohit, who has scored 1500 runs at an average of 33.33 and a strike rate of 148.95.The timing of the announcement, just over a month before the World Cup begins, as well as the news itself, may have caught many within and outside the India camp by surprise, but Kohli has been mulling over lightening his workload for a while. It’s something India’s selectors and team management have also kept an eye on, resting Kohli whenever possible from T20Is, to the extent that he has only played 45 of India’s 67 matches in the format since taking over as captain. Not having to worry about the T20I captaincy could also help Kohli focus more on his batting, particularly at a time when he’s in the middle of a trough in Test cricket. Since the start of 2020, Kohli has averaged 26.80 over 12 Test matches, and across all formats, he has gone 53 innings without an international hundred.Kohli would have also been aware of the growing pressure on his captaincy from outside, with numerous pundits including the former India opener Gautam Gambhir suggesting that India need to adopt split captaincy.Last year, immediately after Rohit led the Mumbai Indians to their fifth IPL title, Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo that would be Indian cricket’s “loss” and “misfortune” if Rohit did not get the opportunity to take over the white-ball captaincy.Virat Kohli has an opportunity to improve on his impressive record before he steps down from the T20I captaincy•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Gambhir had stressed that Kohli was not a “poor” T20 captain, but contrasted his failure to win an IPL title during his long reign leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore with Rohit’s strong record with Mumbai.”They can also consider split captaincy,” Gambhir said. “No one is poor. Rohit has shown in white-ball cricket how big the difference is between his and Virat’s captaincy. One player had led his team to five titles, the other hasn’t won yet. I’m not saying this because Kohli is a poor captain. But he has received the same platform that Rohit has, so you have to judge both of them on the same parameters. Both have been captains in the IPL for the same length of time. I feel Rohit stands out as a leader.”Kohli’s decision also comes close on the heels of the BCCI deciding to appoint Dhoni as the team’s mentor for the forthcoming T20 World Cup. While Shah did not provide the exact reason why Dhoni was brought on board, ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCCI wanted to ensure two things: that he could help the leadership group in their planning, and more importantly also play a key role in selections for matches. While India have been highly successful in all three formats under Kohli, they are yet to win a global trophy during his reign, which Ganguly has pointed out in the past. The presence of Dhoni would both lighten Kohli’s burden and help Shastri and his coaching staff with planning.
