In the clutter of T20 leagues, BPL has fallen behind in race to sign big names

With the UAE and South Africa leagues making big-ticket signings, and the BBL very much on the horizon, the BPL has to find a way to remain relevant

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is lagging behind in the race to sign overseas T20 stars for the January-February window. The BPL has a window from January 6 to February 15, the dates clashing with the UAE’s ILT20, South Africa’s yet-to-be-named T20 league and the Australian BBL. The BBL’s draft for overseas players is scheduled for August 28. The UAE and South Africa leagues have been in the news practically every day, for the big-ticket players the franchises are signing on. There has been no buzz around the BPL.The BCB has set August 31 as the deadline for potential franchise owners’ “expression of Interest” (EOI). Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the BCB chief executive, had earlier said that the board was hoping most of the previous franchise owners would return, with the BPL providing three-year contracts for them. Earlier, the franchise contracts were for just a year.Related

“We will try to finalise everything soon, so that the owners can start their preparation,” Chowdhury had said. “They will be in a better position since it is for three years. Franchise owners usually want everything to be organised, so this time it will be quite good since we are giving the teams a longer period.”The BCB is also hoping that the BPL will not be without its share of overseas names, while all Bangladeshi cricketers would be expected to participate.”We have to keep in mind that the member countries are looking for a window to hold domestic T20 leagues. There’s going to be conflict (in scheduling) if other members’ windows fall at the same time. Everyone is going to suffer, not just us,” Chowdhury said. “Two or three of our most important players will be playing in our domestic league. I don’t want to mention any names but those who usually play overseas will be missed in those leagues. But we are expecting foreign players to play in our league.”There’s the matter of the NOC [no-objection certificate]. There is also an understanding among member countries. Everyone abides by this rule. I don’t personally think anyone will play anything other than their own competition.”There is bound to be a demand for established stars, but the franchise owners, whoever they are, will be in a race against time.Among the ILT20’s signings are Dwayne Bravo and Andre Fletcher, respectively the second-highest wicket-taker and the second-highest run-getter in the last edition of the BPL. Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali and Sunil Narine, who formed the core of the Comilla Victorians side that won the title the last time, are all unavailable. Du Plessis will play for the CSK-owned franchise in South Africa, while the ILT20 has announced the names of Moeen and Narine. Andre Russell, who played for Minister Group Dhaka, is also on the ILT20’s list of signings, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who represented Fortune Barishal, will be playing in South Africa. The top local players will, in all likelihood, play the BPL, but will there be enough overseas stars?•AFP/Getty Images

Then there is the BBL. It is scheduled to start on December 13 and run till February 4, and has named 170 cricketers already, including Rashid Khan, Alex Hales, du Plessis, Rilee Rossouw and Bravo. But the ILT20 has been the most proactive with its signings. The South African league hasn’t been too far behind either. For the BPL, if the EOI list is revealed on August 31, and roughly another month is required to get through the official procedures for the franchises to sign up, the players’ draft or auction can’t be held till October. With several T20 leagues running at the same time, and player demand being at an unprecedented high, the BPL would have benefitted from having a more settled appearance about it.Historically, the BPL franchises have been known to pay well, but there is another niggle. As several player agents told us, because of the laws of the land in Bangladesh, the players end up paying higher taxes than they do elsewhere. It might sound like a trifle, but the lack of nightlife options in most cities in Bangladesh is something that has bothered overseas players in the past.So what does the BPL do? If the big stars don’t come, the tournament will lose its sheen. The ILT20 and the South African leagues have appeared as gamechangers, and with the windows almost set in stone for the next few years, the BPL will have to up its game, somehow, to remain relevant.

Dream Martinelli upgrade: Arsenal have made £50m PL star a top target

They may have continued their impressive Champions League form on Wednesday night, but domestically, Arsenal’s season has not gone as planned.

Mikel Arteta’s side came into the campaign hopeful of finally getting their hands on the title, but as things stand, they find themselves six points off leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Worse still, the North Londoners crashed out of the FA Cup at home to a dire Manchester United side and will have to overturn a 2-0 deficit away to Newcastle United next month to make it to the League Cup Final.

There have been issues across the pitch for the Gunners, but it is in attack where much of the frustration stems, and while he has shown glimpses of quality this year, Gabriel Martinelli continues to underwhelm.

It has been almost two years since we have seen the mercurial Brazilian at his dangerous best, and now the club might be losing patience with him as well, with recent reports touting a Premier League star who could be his potential replacement with a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal chasing Premier League game-changer

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are interested in Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, whom they have identified as their top alternative to the injured Bukayo Saka.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, they are not the only team keen on the Ghanaian international, as the report has revealed that fellow Premier League sides Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on the situation.

On top of the potential competition, the Gunners will also have to stump up a sizable fee, as according to the report, the Cherries are reluctant to sell their star, whom they value at around £50m.

Antoine Semenyo scores for Bournemouth

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Semenyo’s ability and potential, it is well worth pursuing.

Moreover, while he might be seen as a player to cover for the injured Saka, he could also be the long-term upgrade on Martinelli.

How Semenyo compares to Martinelli

Okay, so the first thing to point out is that, yes, in the immediate future, Semenyo would be an excellent stand-in for the injured Saka, as following Jesus’ injury against United, the only somewhat natural option Arteta has on that side is Ethan Nwaneri.

Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth.

However, due to his impressive versatility combined with the fact he’s one of the few genuinely two-footed players in the Premier League, the Bournemouth ace’s long-term role at Arsenal would likely be off the left, as we don’t know if there is a player in world football that the manager would start over a fit Saka on the right.

So, how does the 25-year-old dynamo stack up to Martinelli, who would likely be his main competition for game time on that side of the frontline?

Well, from a pure output perspective, it’s a clear win for the “unplayable” winger, as dubbed by football journalist Ed Aarons, as in just 23 appearances totalling 1908 minutes this season, he has scored seven goals and provided four assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 2.09 games, or every 173.45 minutes.

In contrast, the former Ituano gem has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 31 appearances, totalling 2161 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 3.1 games, or every 216.1 minutes.

Moreover, on top of being able to produce impressive levels of output for a team outside the traditional ‘big six,’ the “versatile forward,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is also a big game player, having scored a goal against Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest and providing an assist home and away against Newcastle United, all this season.

Ultimately, while he might not be the biggest name around, Semenyo has cemented himself as one of the most exciting and effective forwards in the Premier League this year. Therefore, Arsenal should be doing all they can to bring him in this month, even if it could be bad news for Martinelli’s long term future at the club.

Arsenal's 9 most farcical red cards under Mikel Arteta – ranked

Since Mikel Arteta took over as Arsenal manager in December 2019, the Gunners have received more than their fair share of red cards.

While many may have been just, there have been a fair few that have been no doubt controversial, whether you look at them through the angry eyes of a begrudged Arsenal fan or a neutral.

Here, we’ve broken down the most controversial of the bunch, starting way back in 2020.

Every Premier League team's worst referee

No prizes for guessing which referee Arsenal would love to avoid the most…

1 ByStephan Georgiou Oct 2, 2024 9 Eddie Nketiah v Leicester, 2019/20 Referee: Chris Kavanagh

Eddie Nketiah was shown a red card following a video assistant referee (VAR) review during Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Leicester City back in July 2020.

The Englishman went in hard on a 50/50 challenge with Foxes defender James Justin, leading dangerously with his studs showing and connecting with Justin just below the knee.

Emiliano Martinez, Arsenal’s keeper at the time, called the decision “harsh” because he felt Nketiah had slipped, and the Gunners even tried to appeal the decision. Perhaps expectedly, they failed.

8 Gabriel v Man City, 2021/22 Referee: Stuart Attwell

Gabriel was sent off for a second bookable offence as Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day in 2022.

His first booking was awarded for scuffing up the penalty spot after Granit Xhaka committed a clumsy challenge on Bernardo Silva in the box.

Not long after, Gabriel got his second yellow for dragging down his now-teammate Gabriel Jesus as he received the ball on his chest and turned into the Gunners’ half. It was certainly on the soft side, and on another day with a different referee, he may well have escaped a second caution.

Gabriel later said on social media that the red card and defeat were “hard to accept”.

7 Gabriel v Southampton, 2020/21 Referee: Paul Tierney

A year prior to being sent off against Manchester City, Gabriel was shown red in almost the exact same circumstances. While already on a yellow, the Brazilian defender brought down Theo Walcott near the halfway line after being turned by the Southampton forward.

Clearly aggrieved, the sending-off led Mikel Arteta to point out after the game that there were similar incidents throughout the match that went unpunished.

“There were many incidents before that where the referee didn’t give any yellow cards – for blocking free-kicks, for kicking the ball out and we got it,” the Arsenal head coach said. “So at the end, you have to be a little bit stable on that and understand the game and the tension about it. After that, we got the decision and we had to fight back.”

10 of the worst referee mistakes in football history

Some say it’s the hardest job in football, but these refs got it really, really wrong.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 7, 2025 6 Takehiro Tomiyasu v Crystal Palace, 2023/24 Referee: David Coote

Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu reacts after being sent off by refereeDavidCoote

Last season, defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was shown his marching orders by David Coote in a game against Crystal Palace after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

The Japan international was first cautioned for apparently time-wasting during a throw-in, with Coote showing him a second yellow just minutes later after the lightest of tugs on Jordan Ayew’s shirt halted a Crystal Palace counter-attack.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was among those to think Tomiyasu was hard done by. “I don’t think Tomiyasu’s actually trying to waste time. I think he’s actually looking for a throw-in, to get it in quickly. He actually ran to pick up the ball. He wasn’t slow. I can understand the referee. But he’s almost took one for the team.”

5 David Luiz v Wolves, 2020/21 Referee: Craig Pawson

David Luiz was never far from controversy during his time in the Premier League, and that was certainly true when Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Wolves in February 2021.

Luiz was sent off for the third time in his Gunners career after being adjudged to have committed a last-man foul in first-half stoppage-time on Wolves striker Willian Jose. Though the contact appeared minimal, the decision was upheld by the VAR.

If anything, it appeared the striker had kicked the Brazilian as he swung to shoot, with Arteta branding the decision, which Arsenal unsuccessfully appealed, as “unfair”.

“I’ve seen it 10 times in different angles and I cannot tell you where the contact is,” he said after the game. “If they have another 50 different angles to watch it, maybe I will be surprised. I looked at seven different angles and I cannot see any contact there.”

4 Gabriel Martinelli v Wolves, 2021/22 Referee: Michael Oliver

Another day, another red card against Wolves, but this time it was for Luiz’s compatriot, Gabriel Martinelli, who was handed one of the most bizarre red cards in Premier League history in February 2022.

The Brazilian winger was sent for an early bath after picking up two yellows in the same phase of play – first for pushing Daniel Podence as he took a throw and then for chasing up the field and fouling Chiquinho as he ran towards goal with the ball. Referee Michael Oliver had waved advantage for Martinelli’s first offence.

A rule change in 2020 by the IFAB seems to indicate that Martinelli should not have seen red.

“If the referee plays ADVANTAGE for an offence which ‘interfered with or stopped a promising attack’, the caution (yellow card, YC) is NOT issued,” the IFAB tweeted in 2020.

3 Declan Rice v Brighton, 2024/25 Referee: Chris Kavanagh

Declan Rice received his marching orders during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton in August 2024 after picking up a second yellow card for poking the ball away from Joel Veltman as the Brighton defender prepared to take a free kick.

While by the letter of the law, the decision could be seen correct, it incensed many Arsenal fans, and has continued to do so because other similar incidents have since gone unpunished.

There is also the fact that Veltman – faintly praised by former official Mike Dean for his “clever” play – had attempted to take a quick free-kick while proceeding to boot Rice from behind, to no punishment whatsoever.

In what will have done little to quell the Gunners’ anger, referee Chris Kavanagh said he “didn’t like” the decision, but felt he “had no choice” but to send the midfielder off.

The 11 most controversial decisions in the Premier League this season

There have been some very contentious refereeing decisions this season in the Premier League…

ByBarney Lane Jan 9, 2025 2 Leandro Trossard v Man City, 2024/25 Referee: Michael Oliver

Just weeks after Declan Rice’s red card against Brighton, Leandro Trossard found himself in a similar situation, earning a second yellow for delaying the restart after a foul.

With Arsenal leading 2-1 against champions Manchester City just before half-time, Trossard barged into Bernardo Silva, sending the Portuguese midfielder tumbling to the ground and resulting in referee Michael Oliver awarding a free-kick to the home side.

After Oliver had blown his whistle, Trossard then appeared to kick the ball away, and the official sent him off.

Trossard and the rest of the Arsenal players protested his innocence, and it certainly seemed harsh given the mere split-second there was between Oliver’s whistle and the Belgian winger hoofing the ball away.

Not only will this have enraged Gunners fans once again, particularly in a big game, but given Silva was prone on the floor and arguably unable to restart play, it could be debated as to whether Trossard delayed proceedings at all.

However, a Key Match Incidents panel said Oliver made the right call.

1 Myles Lewis-Skelly v Wolves, 2024/25 Referee: Michael Oliver

Reuters

What is it about Arsenal having players sent off against Wolves?

In Arsenal’s most recent red card controversy, defender Myles Lewis-Skelly was dismissed for “serious foul play” just before half-time after tripping Wolves defender Matt Doherty near the edge of the Wolves box. The incident occurred as Doherty looked to launch a counter-attack following an Arsenal corner.

The Premier League website defines serious foul play as occurring when “any player lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, side, or behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or in a manner that endangers the safety of an opponent.”

According to the site, if the contact is deemed “forceful” and occurs on the ankle or higher, it warrants a red card.

While Lewis-Skelly’s tackle did make contact with the ankle, referee Michael Oliver’s decision to deem it forceful appeared extremely harsh. Fans, pundits, players, and even managers – Arteta included – were nearly unanimous in criticising the decision.

“I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you,” Arteta said to Sky Sports. “Because it is that obvious, I don’t think my words are going to help.”

Former Manchester City and England star Micah Richards called it the “worst decision I’ve ever seen in Premier League football history”.

“How on earth they can go to VAR, look at a screen, look at it multiple times [and] not even a split second to look at it but ten seconds, 20 seconds, multiple different angles and they still think that is a red card…” Richards said when reflecting on the incident on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“I don’t like using the word ‘disgrace’ because I feel like it’s easy to throw that word out. But if you look at the magnitude of that decision, it was so poor, and for them to double down on the decision, I just think it’s shocking,” only the PGMOL seems to disagree.

Tempers flared after Fareed Ahmad dismissed Asif Ali•Associated Press

Asif Ali and Fareed Ahmad have both been fined 25% of their match fees for a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct during the Asia Cup fixture between Afghanistan and Pakistan on September 7.The incident in question took place in the 19th over of Pakistan’s chase in what had become a tense match, when Fareed dismissed Asif to leave Afghanistan one wicket away from victory. Following the dismissal, Fareed took his celebrations quite close to the dismissed Asif, who reacted by shoving the bowler. A brief altercation ensued.”Asif breached Article 2.6 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match” while Fareed was found to have breached Article 2.1.12, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match,” the ICC said in a statement. Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. The game, which became ill-tempered towards the end, also witnessed crowd trouble after Pakistan won in dramatic fashion by one wicket thanks to two sixes by Naseem Shah off the first two balls of the 20th over. Several Afghanistan fans were detained by police following ugly scenes in the stands, though no arrests were made. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja has said the board would write to the ICC to “lodge a protest” over the “gruesome visuals” that followed the game.

No need for Marmoush: Man City may regret selling amazing £36m star

It was a busy January transfer window for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side made four signings to help them improve their standing in the Premier League. At the moment, the Citizens are fifth in the top flight with 41 points to their name. They also face a Champions League knockout clash with Real Madrid.

City made two defensive reinforcements in the winter transfer window, bringing in centre-back pair Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras. They also made a deadline-day addition, signing midfielder Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto to add to the numbers in the middle of the park in Rodri’s absence.

Perhaps the marquee addition in the January transfer window was Omar Marmoush.

Why Man City signed Marmoush

There are few players City could have signed to strengthen in attack who would have been in better form than Marmoush. He was having a simply sensational time of things in the German Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt before his £59m move to the Etihad Stadium.

Prior to his move to the Citizens, the Egypt international had scored 20 goals and grabbed 14 assists in just 26 games in all competitions. Despite the fact he left in mid-January, he is still second in the list for most Bundesliga goal involvements, with Harry Kane the only player ahead of him, as per FBref.

The 26-year-old has so far made two Premier League appearances for City, and it has been a real baptism of fire for the attacker so far. He first faced Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, before coming up against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

It has certainly not been an easy start for Marmoush, but he has stepped up to the occasion admirably. H, football analyst and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown, was full of praise on his City debut. He explained the attacker was “class” on his first appearance for City, commending him for “ridiculous” runs in behind.

As good as Marmoush could end up being for City, they may have been able to save their money had they kept a former academy starlet in their squad.

The academy star Man City should have kept

The player in question here is former City academy player Brahim Diaz. Now at Real Madrid, the Morocco international played for the City youth sides and their first team for a number of years before joining the Spanish giants.

As well as making 61 appearances at academy level for the Citizens, Diaz played 15 times under Guardiola for the East Mancunians. He managed to score two goals, both of which came in the same game against Fulham in a 2-0 Carabao Cup win.

Diaz left City for Los Blanocs in 2019, signing a six-and-a-half-year deal. However, the Moroccan has struggled to lock down a place in their side. He spent a few years on loan at Italian giants Milan, before returning to the Santiago Bernabeu and breaking into the team.

It is the form he has displayed recently that might make City regret ever selling the versatile attacker. Since returning to Madrid over the past two seasons, he has played 73 games, scoring 15 times and registering 15 assists.

Stats from Transfermarkt

The 25-year-old has not only had a knack for finding the back of the net on plenty of occasions, but is also a player Carlo Ancelotti has been able to rely on to play anywhere across the frontline. That has been a real theme throughout his tenure at Real Madrid, and his versatility has been something managers can depend on.

Diaz is now worth upwards of £36m, according to Football Transfers. Looking back on it, this may be a sale Guardiola wishes never went through, given he could have utilised his ability to play right across the frontline.

Had Diaz stayed at the Etihad Stadium, it could have saved City an absolute fortune on Marmoush. As well as their new number seven has done so far, perhaps Diaz would have excelled in the same role.
