Kuldeep Yadav: 'I am not afraid of failures now'

Says he “did not how to cope” with missing out for India, but having time off because of injury helped him get into a better bowling rhythm

Left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav “did not know how to cope” when he lost his place in the Indian team, but he is not afraid of failure anymore. He said as much after his hat-trick for India A against New Zealand A in Chennai on Sunday helped the hosts wrap up the one-day series with a game to play.Kuldeep faced a setback last year, injuring his knee at the IPL and undergoing surgery in September. That kept him out of action for several months. He also suffered a hairline fracture in his wrist this year, which forced him out of India’s T20I series against South Africa in June, as the white-ball tours of Ireland and England that followed. The time away from the game helped him work on his rhythm, Kuldeep said, and this helped him come back stronger.”I did not know how to cope with not getting enough game time,” he said after today’s match. “After the [knee] injury layoff of four months, I realised that I need to bowl quicker and began working on it. I am not afraid of failures now. When you fail, you learn. When I came back to the Indian side in January, I was not afraid of failure. I wanted to enjoy the game. My focus is to keep hitting the good lengths. [Getting] wickets is not in my hands, I just want to bowl in good areas.”To be honest, when I got injured, coming back from there, understanding my rhythm was very important. I was a little bit slow. After surgery, I have changed that rhythm, bowling with more effort and more control.”After his post-surgery rehabilitation process, Kuldeep was named in the squad in January for the three-match ODI series against West Indies, and then replaced the injured Washington Sundar for the three T20Is against Sri Lanka in February. He featured in just one ODI against West Indies and one T20I against Sri Lanka, though, before the wrist issue dragged him back again. After that, he played white-ball games for India in the West Indies and Zimbabwe in August, before the New Zealand A challenge.”Coming back, I was bowling well in the IPL [this year] before I got hit in the nets and was out for two months.”[Later] in the West Indies, I bowled really well, and in Zimbabwe as well. Accuracy and speed were phenomenal. Then coming back, I’ve played red ball [against New Zealand A]. I’ve [also] played two [one-day] games here, in the first game also the control was beautiful. I am very happy.”Kuldeep said the injuries and subsequent recovery process made him understand himself and his body better. “When you keep playing, you learn. You want to play more games but that could not happen. I actually didn’t know how to cope with it.”The injury was lucky for me. I could understand my body and on the comeback, began thinking about my rhythm. It is challenging but you have to see the other part as well… It is always tough playing for India.”

Man City may have their new Brahim Díaz in Pep’s "special" talent

Can Manchester City make a success of this season?

The Sky Blues are on the brink of Champions League elimination, following Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, in which the holders scored not once but twice at the death to snatch victory at the Etihad.

Manchester City managerPepGuardiola

So, having reached at least the Champions League quarter-finals in each of the last seven seasons, the Citizens must win at the Bernabéu next Wednesday to avoid their earliest European exit for 12 years.

Meantime, considering Pep Guardiola’s team are fifth in the Premier League, facing a crucial clash with Newcastle on Saturday, they’re in danger of missing out on next season’s Champions League all together, but could the introduction of a youngster help salvage this season?

Brahim Díaz's Man City return

As is so often the case, a player came back to haunt his former club at the Etihad on Tuesday, although this scenario was pretty unique.

Mere moments after being introduced as a substitute, Brahim Díaz slotted home Real Madrid’s equaliser, which kick-started los Blancos’ trademark, and seemingly inevitable, remontada.

However, former Manchester United, Wimbledon and Coventry forward Terry Gibson, speaking on the La Liga weekly podcast, described Díaz’s decision not to celebrate his goal as “bizarre”, suggesting the majority of supporters inside the stadium would not have known who he was.

Meantime, speaking on the Guardian Football Weekly, Max Rushden thought it was particularly amusing that the 25-year-old refused to celebrate his own goal, only to “strut around like a peacock” in celebration after Jude Bellingham had poked home the winner five minutes later.

Real Madrid'sBrahimDiaz, Raul Asencio and Rodrygo celebrate their second goal

The context is that, despite being on Man City’s books for four years, the Morocco international made just 15 senior appearances, totaling a mere 415 minutes, all four of his starts for the club coming in the Carabao Cup, before joining Madrid for a reported £15.5m in 2019.

Díaz is yet to establish himself as a regular at Madrid either, 16 of his 30 appearances this season have come as a substitute, although Graham Ruthven of Total Soccer Show believes he is under-utilised by Carlo Ancelotti noting, when he is given an opportunity, he adds “cohesion” to Madrid’s often chaotic forward-line.

So, while many Man City onlookers may feel they made a mistake letting him go, they may actually have an even more talented attacking midfielder sitting on their bench waiting to be unleashed.

Man City's next midfield superstar

During the January transfer window, Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berge of Sky Sports Deutschland reported that Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen were attempting to sign James McAtee.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

However, this move did not come to fruition because, as James Ducker of the Telegraph noted, the proposal was rejected by Man City, mainly because Guardiola “made it clear” he had no intention of letting McAtee leave.

His manager had previously described McAtee as “special”, while Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelled him a “top talent”, praising his “electric pace”, dribbling ability and “above-average decision-making in the final third”.

Despite these rave reviews, the 22-year-old has seen just 597 minutes of action this season, bagging a hat-trick against Salford in the FA Cup and then his first Premier League goal for the club at Ipswich a week later, but Sam Lee of The Athletic reports that he remains frustrated by his “limited opportunities”.

McAtee joined the Citizens’ academy at the age of 11, spending the previous two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, helping the Blades gain promotion from the EFL Championship in 2023, before a rather miserable relegation campaign last time round.

Nevertheless, he still scored 14 goals in 75 appearances in South Yorkshire, his first-ever Premier League goal a stunning winner against Brentford in December 2023.

Díaz meantime, was never loaned out before departing Man City for Real Madrid, so let’s assess how their careers in Sky Blue compare.

The Englishman, who is admittedly three years older than the Moroccan was when he departed, has been given more opportunities in the first team, but not an exponentially greater amount.

All his five goals for the club have come this season, on target during routs against Slovan Bratislava, Salford and Ipswich.

However, the most telling statistic in the table above is the fact McAtee has been an unused substitute 44 times, half of which have come this season, which must be demoralising if nothing else, so you can understand why he may push for a move, following in Díaz’s footsteps by departing for one of the world’s biggest clubs.

Afghanistan and Ireland split points after another MCG washout

Back-to-back no-results keep Afghanistan at the bottom of the Group 1 table, while Ireland rise to No. 2

Afghanistan and Ireland shared the points on offer after persistent rain prevented any action – or even the toss – from taking place in their men’s T20 World Cup match at the MCG on Friday. For Afghanistan, the result came just two days after their game against New Zealand, at the same venue, had also been abandoned. With the point they earned today, Ireland, who had beaten England earlier, climbed up two steps to No. 2 in the group, behind New Zealand, who are on three points from two games.Afghanistan have two points, the same as Sri Lanka, England and Australia. But all those teams have played one game fewer and also have a “W” against their names, unlike Afghanistan, who had lost to England in their first match of the tournament before the successive washouts. It was a frustrating afternoon for all concerned. Although it wasn’t raining an hour before the scheduled start of the match, it started pouring just minutes before the scheduled toss, at 2.30pm local time. The toss was delayed as a result, and at 3pm – the scheduled start of play – the umpires announced an inspection for an hour later, by when losing overs was inevitable.Rain remained on the radar, and while it abated for periods, raising hopes of , another downpour around 3.30pm brought the covers back on. Then, at around 4.15pm, it was decided that an inspection would be conducted only after the rain stopped, but the abandonment was announced just 18 minutes later.A point against Afghanistan might have boosted Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals, but they do have games against Australia and New Zealand lined up. They will back themselves, though, after having pulled off a tight five-run win [DLS method] against England.Australia play England in the evening match at the MCG, with rain set to play a part there too.

Isak, Wood, Haaland: The 10 best Premier League strikers right now (ranked)

A good striker normally indicates that a side will do well in any given season, but they are notoriously hard to come by. Though putting the ball in the net sounds like the easiest job in the world, the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Rasmus Hojlund and Darwin Nunez have proved that doing it on a regular basis in the Premier League is far from simple.

But on the other end of the spectrum, there are players whose careers have been built in England’s top flight, and whose eye for goal is invaluable for their side as the margins continue to shrink in football.

Below, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best marksmen around, including players across the division.

A striker’s currency is goals, and it will be no surprise to see plenty of those towards the top of the goalscoring charts in this list, but our list of criteria also includes things like conversion rate (shots per goal), goals per 90 minutes and also a nod towards the difficulty of scoring goals for different sides (would Erling Haaland have scored 19 goals at Ipswich Town?).

Kane, Gyokeres, Mbappe: Ranking Europe's top 12 goalscorers in 2024

With the likes of Harry Kane scoring goals for the fun, only one can claim to have scored the most in 2024.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 2, 2025

So without further ado, let’s jump into this not-at-all-controversial top 10 (note: stats correct as of 17th February 2025):

10 Raul Jimenez (Fulham) 9 goals, 179 minutes per goal

Enjoying a late renaissance in his career after a sickening injury, Raul Jimenez continues to impress leading the line for Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Mexican has found the net nine times this season, as well as grabbing three assists.

His goals come from his sheer volume of shots, with his conversion rate (13%) the lowest of the players on this list, but it is his goals that have Fulham firmly in the hunt for European football rather than scrapping in the bottom half of the division.

Out of contract this summer, the Cottagers will be hoping to tie him down once more in a bid to guarantee goals in west London for seasons to come.

A look at every single player who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

ByBen Browning Feb 14, 2025 9 Kai Havertz (Arsenal) 9 goals, 205 minutes per goal

A striker as frustrating as he is enjoyable, Kai Havertz found the net nine times for Arsenal, earning him a spot on this list despite his recent season-ending injury.

However, recent high-profile misses have laid bare the need to upgrade on the German in north London if they are to lift serious silverware in the seasons ahead. While his work rate, hold-up play and eye for a goal are admirable, Arsenal will need more to challenge at the very top.

8 Liam Delap (Ipswich) 10 goals, 186 minutes per goal

Ipswich Town'sLiamDelapapplauds fans after the match

A proper old-school No 9, any hopes Ipswich Town have of surviving in the Premier League this season are on the shoulders of Liam Delap. Still just 21 years old, the ex-Manchester City youth graduate has hit the net 10 times already in his debut top-flight campaign, and has also won plaudits for his hold-up play and willingness to press.

With a goal every other game for a side that look destined for the second tier, it is little surprise to see clubs like Chelsea linked with a move for the Englishman, and a full national team debut cannot be too far away should he continue to find the net at Portman Road.

10 wildcard players Thomas Tuchel could call up for England

The new era under the German begins in March, but could he spring a surprise in his first squad selection?

ByCharlie Smith Feb 13, 2025 7 Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace) 11 goals, 178 minutes per goal

Jean-Philippe Mateta

Crystal Palace signed Eddie Nketiah for a massive fee in the summer, but such has been the form of Mateta that the ex-Arsenal man has barely had a chance for a run of games.

Fresh from earning an Olympic silver medal, Mateta has hit double figures again for the Eagles as he powers them away from the relegation zone after a horror start to the season, earning links with the likes of Manchester United and Lyon in the process.

His goals have come from just 50 shots – only Chris Wood has scored more from fewer attempts – underlining just how clinical in front of goal the 27-year-old has become at Selhurst Park.

6 Matheus Cunha (Wolves) 12 goals, 164 minutes per goal

In truth, it is difficult to place Matheus Cunha on the pitch, with the Brazilian roaming all over the place for Wolves and undoubtedly the man they look to for some magic in the final third.

So far, that is working, with the Brazilian having grabbed 12 goals for his side this season as they look to beat relegation.

His tally of 77 shots so far this season is behind only Erling Haaland on this list, while he converts those to goals roughly 16% of the time, the second-lowest on this list.

Such were his performances in the first half of the season that he was linked with a move to a bigger club in January, only to pen a new deal until 2029 which includes a release clause available to be activated in the summer.

5 Yoane Wissa (Brentford) 11 goals, 160 minutes per goal

Criminally underrated, Yoane Wissa has been overshadowed at Brentford by Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo, but continues to dazzle at the Gtech under Thomas Frank’s tutelage.

Now 28 years old, Wissa has hit the net 11 times this season (none of them from the spot) and is scoring a goal every other game, while his 21% goal conversion is better than the likes of Erling Haaland (20%).

Capable of playing across the front three, Wissa has now hit double figures for a second successive year and looks set to continue to improve in the years to come.

Every 2024/25 Premier League club's most underrated player

These players don’t get the credit they deserve.

ByBarney Lane Feb 6, 2025 4 Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) 11 goals, 158 minutes per goal

Off the back of a record-breaking season last year, Ollie Watkins remains one of the Premier League’s best strikers, but he has struggled to replicate his form so far for Aston Villa this season.

He has found the net 11 times for Unai Emery’s side, grabbing five assists in the process too, in what has still been a very strong season for the 29-year-old Englishman.

It is easy to see why he was linked with Arsenal in January, such has been his sustained form in the top flight, but Villa will be hoping that the sale of Jhon Duran allows them to keep hold of their talisman for a while longer yet as he aims to fire them back into the Champions League.

3 Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest) 18 goals, 112 minutes per goal

Be honest, no one saw Chris Wood becoming a killer top-flight striker at Nottingham Forest. Yet that is precisely what the gangly forward has done, spearheading his side towards a shock spot in the Champions League next season.

The 32-year-old has scored 18 goals this season, including 15 non-penalty efforts from an expected goals total of just 10.4 (as per FBref), while he is converting at a mammoth 39%, putting him among the best in Europe.

His form across the 2023/24 campaign could have been attributed to fluke, but to repeat it once more this season demonstrates that there is a seriously talented striker leading the line at the City Ground.

2 Erling Haaland (Man City) 19 goals, 116 mins per goal

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

Since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, Erling Haaland has broken just about every goalscoring record, and even as he and Manchester City struggle this season he has managed to find the net 19 times.

He continues to hit the net at a rate of 0.76 goals per game, and strikes fear into defenders with his sheer speed and power, while also possessing an unteachable knack of being in the right place at the right time.

Having just signed a new deal in Manchester, defenders have another 10 years of trying, and ultimately failing, to stop him from finding the net in the top flight.

1 Alexander Isak (Newcastle) 17 goals, 111 mins per goal

Perhaps now slightly numb to Haaland’s ridiculous scoring rate, we’ve opted to dethrone the Norwegian marksman and replace him with Alexander Isak.

Isak may trail Haaland by two goals in the goalscoring charts at the time of writing, but his 111 minutes per goal is actually better than Haaland’s 116, and so too are his goals per 90 minutes (0.81 v 0.77).

Playing for a slightly inferior side in Newcastle United, Isak has also managed a better conversion rate (26% vs 20%) than Haaland, and is carrying the Magpies towards European football once more, catching the eye of clubs across the world in the process.

Drama at the death – a ball-by-ball account of a cracking finish at the MCG

It was 31 from 12, and then 16 from six, and then there were wickets, wides, no-balls, sixes, arguments… pretty much everything

18.1: Haris Rauf to Hardik, 1 run
Length ball angling into the corridor, sits deep in his crease and flat-bats it along the ground to deep midwicket18.2: Haris Rauf to Kohli, 1 run
Length ball outside off, slapped on the bounce to deep cover point18.3: Haris Rauf to Hardik, no run
Extra bounce. Short outside off, and the ball beats Hardik’s attempted uppercut18.4: Haris Rauf to Hardik, 1 run
Hard length., angling into the body. Can’t pull that, just manages to send it dribbling towards long-on off the sticker of the bat18.5: Haris Rauf to Kohli, SIX runs
Okay, wow. Has Kohli ever played a better shot in T20 cricket? Length ball, finishing around bail-high, and Kohli punches it with an almost straight bat, straight back over the bowler’s head. Swivels through the hip a little as he does so, a la Jos Buttler, and it easily carries over the rope18.6: Haris Rauf to Kohli, SIX runs
Fullish, angling into leg stump, and Kohli has caused the MCG to explode into pure noise. A flick of the wrists, and the ball sails over the boundary to the left of fine leg. Wow!Fifteen off that over. Twelve off those last two balls. And it comes down to 16 off this final over, with Mohammad Nawaz to bowl. What an incredible game this has been. What an innings Virat Kohli has played.Mohammad Rizwan is standing back to the spinner! Deep extra-cover, long-off, long-on, cow corner, deep square leg are back.19.1: Nawaz to Hardik, OUT
Got him, what a strike for Pakistan! Flat, speared into the pads, and Hardik loses his shape completely as he tries to slog this over the leg side. Edges it, and the ball balloons to the fielder at cover pointAnd with the new T20I rules in place, it’ll be Dinesh Karthik on strike and not Kohli, even though the batters crossed over. DK isn’t the greatest of starters against spin, usually…19.2: Nawaz to Karthik, 1 run
Down the track, and he gets a full-toss that’s chest-high when he meets it. Would it have been as high if he was standing in his normal position? Probably not. Swatted down to long-onKohli on strike. Fifteen to win off four balls. Fourteen to tie. Nawaz is basically bowling left-arm medium.19.3: Nawaz to Kohli, 2 runs
They need a boundary every ball, almost, but they only get two here. Very full, almost a wide yorker, and Kohli drags it down to long-on, all along the ground19.4: Nawaz to Kohli, (no ball) SIX runs
Full-toss, full-toss, and it’s gone for six!!!! It’s only just gone for six, but it’s gone for six nonetheless! On off stump, and it’s a fairly high full-toss too – it’s been called no-ball!!! – and Kohli swats it away over the leg side. Deep square leg leaps to his right, gets a hand to the ball to try and flap it back into play, but it still lands beyond the ropeBabar’s having a heated discussion with the umpires. Was that above waist height? Tight call, I would think.Suddenly, India need 6 off 3. Such a massive difference from 13 off 3.19.4: Nawaz to Kohli, 1 wide
Now he bowls a wide! All the pressure is on the poor bowler, and he looks to keep it away from Kohli’s reach, but ends up spearing his wide yorker beyond the off-side tramline19.4: Nawaz to Kohli, 3 byes
Bowled him, but it’s a free hit! And they run three by the time the throw comes in from the third man region!!! Full, angling into off stump, and Kohli misses his attempted sweep. But he knows it’s a free-hit, and he sets off at full pace, as does DK. The ball rolls between the keeper and short third, and they pick up three byesPhew. It’s down to two off two now, with DK on strike. Absolutely incredible scenes at the G. Do Pakistan bring their fielders in to crowd the ring? Nope, just four inside the circle. Keeper comes back up to the stumps.19.5: Nawaz to Karthik, OUT
Got him, a stumping off the pads!!! Goes flat, angling down leg, following DK’s movement to make room. Looks to sweep, and the ball dribbles off the pad behind the wicket. And Rizwan is alert to the fact that DK has stumbled out of his crease. What a moment. Rizwan is well down the leg side when he collects the ball, and he falls to his right to complete the stumpingWhodathunkit. R Ashwin to face the last ball, with two runs needed. One to tie. Still just four inside the circle.19.6: Nawaz to Ashwin, 1 wide
And Nawaz bowls a wide!!!! Expects Ashwin to try and make room, maybe, and sends a flat, quick one well down the leg side. Ashwin just watches it pass him, and the MCG explodes once more!Seven fielders in the circle now.19.6: Nawaz to Ashwin, 1 run
And Ashwin clears one of those infielders!!! What a cool, collected, and elegant finish!!! Full, angling into the stumps, and Ashwin makes a little bit of room and scoops the ball over mid-off. What a finish! What a freaking game!!!Virat Kohli. A few weeks ago, there were people (myself included) asking if he should still be part of India’s T20I line-up. There’s a reason I’m not a coach or a selector. Let’s go back to the seventh over of this innings. India were 31 for 4, and going absolutely nowhere. What followed was a partnership for the ages between Kohli and Hardik Pandya, and when it came down to the finish, when it came down to 28 to win off eight balls, it was Kohli who found the route to the boundary. Two back-to-back sixes off the excellent Haris Rauf, and that put all the pressure on Mohammad Nawaz, whose last over had been held back.
