David and Green settle into 'really flexible' roles after taking Mumbai Indians to their first win

“Knowing how much confidence I got out of that game, I think it will be even more so for Cam,” David says of the win over Delhi Capitals

Matt Roller15-Apr-20232:17

Can David and Green be the new Pollard and Hardik?

Tim David and Cameron Green posed for a photo under the floodlights at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla on Monday night after dragging Mumbai Indians over the line to secure their first win of IPL 2023. David posted it on Instagram with a self-effacing caption: “If you need 5 off 6, we are your men.”It was not a pretty finish, but their unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership worth 30 in 3.1 overs proved just enough to deny Anrich Nortje, who bowled a series of searing yorkers, to clinch Mumbai Indians’ first points of the season. More pertinently, ahead of Sunday afternoon’s fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders, it served as a significant confidence boost for a team that fell to heavy defeats in their first two games.

“Chasing and trying to finish off the game the other night was tough,” David said on Saturday evening, after netting at the Wankhede Stadium. “They bowled a really good last couple of overs in tough batting conditions, so it was great to have that partnership with Greeny and get us over the line. For me, knowing how much confidence I got out of that game, I think it will be even more so for Cam.”Mumbai made a conscious effort to get Green, their INR 17.5 crore (A$ 3.2m approx.) auction purchase, involved in Monday’s game early on, throwing him the ball for the third over of Capitals’ innings. He went wicketless, finishing with 0 for 30 in his three overs, and was then deployed in a new role with the bat as he shuffled down to No. 6 after starting the season at No. 3.It appears that his role is likely to remain flexible throughout the season. “It actually wasn’t planned,” David said of his compatriot’s role change. “The way we feel like, we line up, we’re just going to go with whoever is best matched for that situation at the time.”We feel like we’ve got a really powerful middle order along with obviously the top-order guys who are settled. It’s something that we’ve spoken about as a team: we’re just going to be really flexible, and we’re all prepared to play our role for the team.”David and Green attended the same prestigious school, Scotch College, in Perth’s western suburbs (albeit three years apart) and have played together professionally before: first for Perth Scorchers in the BBL; more recently in Australia’s T20I team. Now, they are team-mates in Mumbai, tasked with restoring the IPL’s most successful franchise to past glories after winning the wooden spoon last year. Green spent Saturday’s net session muscling straight sixes towards the Wankhede’s press box, and David suggested his eight-ball cameo against Capitals would help him – and Mumbai Indians – going forward.”It’s his first couple of games in the IPL,” David said. “It can be different, it can be eye-opening, those first few games coming in as a well-regarded international player. It’s awesome for him, and I know we’re all looking forward to seeing what he can do over this season for us.”We’re very confident that when we play our best, we’re going to score big scores. We’ve got power right through the order. We’re excited, because we know that we’ve got seven or eight guys that throughout the course of the season can play match-winning knocks.”

Spurs now monitoring £43m "leader" who scored Ronaldo-esque goal last month

Tottenham Hotspur are now closely monitoring a £43m “leader” ahead of a potential summer transfer swoop, but there may be competition for his signature from a number of their Premier League rivals, according to a report.

Spurs pursuing new striker this summer

Dominic Solanke has enjoyed a solid, if not spectacular, debut season with Tottenham, scoring 11 goals in all competitions, in a campaign which has been hindered by numerous injury setbacks.

However, Spurs’ lack of depth in the striker department has caused problems, with Richarlison spending the majority of the season on the sidelines, while Mathys Tel is yet to make a real impact since arriving on loan from Bayern Munich in January.

As such, it appears as though Ange Postecoglou’s side could be keen on bringing in a new striker in the summer transfer window, and they are now prepared to make a ‘super bid’ to sign Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres.

The Tottenham manager is not happy with his midfield options, and could look to get rid of an underperforming player this summer.

The Lilywhites are also in active talks over a deal for Lille’s Jonathan David, who is set to be available on a free transfer, but there may be fierce competition for the forward’s signature, with Arsenal and Manchester United in the race.

According to a report from Viola News, Tottenham are also battling their Premier League rivals for Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, who they are now closely monitoring ahead of a potential summer swoop.

Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea are also named as potential suitors for the striker, whose stock has risen considerably this season, most recently impressing by scoring a brace for national side Italy against Germany.

Italy'sMoiseKeancelebrates scoring their first goal

Kean is protected by a €52m (£43m) release clause in his contract with the Serie A side, but in light of his impressive performances, there is a feeling his true value could be much higher.

Kean could now be entering his prime

The Italy striker has been inconsistent throughout his career, displaying some impressive signs with his goal return for Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020-21 campaign, but struggling to make an impact at Goodison Park during his time with Everton.

However, the 25-year-old could now be entering his prime, given the level of his displays this season, netting 20 goals for Fiorentina in all competitions, including a remarkable strike against Genoa last month.

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti described the effort as a “Cristiano Ronaldo-type goal”, while he also received high praise from Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino, who said: “Moise is doing a great job for the team; he’s our striker and a leader, not just in possession.”

Kean was far from impressive during his previous spell in the Premier League, but his performances for club and country this season indicate he could deserve a second chance.

Australia and England have both been penalised for slow over-rates in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston losing two World Test Championship [WTC] points each while players from both sides have been fined 40% of their match fees.Match referee Andy Pycroft ruled that both teams were two overs short of their targets after time allowances were factored in. Teams are docked one WTC point, and 20% of their match fee for each over they are short of their target. Both captains, Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes, accepted the sanctions.Related

There were just 82 overs bowled on day one of the Test, with Australia only bowling 78 before England declared and bowled four overs before stumps. England did bowl 90 overs on the second day, utilising the extra half-hour to do so. Rain affected both the third and the fifth day of the Test match, but England were deemed short of their targets on those days. The penalties mean England are on negative two points after losing their opening Test of the new WTC cycle, while Australia are on ten points, having accrued 12 for their dramatic two-wicket victory.Australia were fined 80% of their match fees in the WTC final at the Oval two weeks ago for slow over-rates. They also missed a spot at the 2021 WTC final in Southampton due to being docked crucial WTC points for slow over-rates in that cycle.

– Eu literalmente amo o Deyverson – afirmou outro.

West Ham want to sign talent compared to Grealish in half price £10m deal

West Ham United always have an eye on emerging talent and are ready to move for an exciting midfielder this summer should circumstances align, per reports.

West Ham looking to rebuild after an inconsistent season

Safety looks to be all but secure for West Ham, but there is no doubt fans haven’t got anywhere near what they bargained for this season as they sit 16th in the Premier League table.

Graham Potter has done his best to reverse their inconsistent nature, though it appears the Hammers are simply ticking off their remaining fixtures ahead of an expected summer rebuild at the London Stadium.

Nevertheless, there is plenty to be positive about for supporters when evaluating movement that could occur in East London. According to reports, Lille’s Jonathan David and Fiorentina forward Moise Kean are West Ham targets in an attempt to solve their striking crisis.

Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug have endured unfortunate circumstances, forcing Potter to operate with auxiliary options through the middle for large parts of his early tenure. Still, there are other areas that will require a similar level of nifty talent identification.

Midfield could be another position subject to change. West Ham are set to put Guido Rodriguez up for sale in the upcoming window and Carlos Soler isn’t expected to be offered a permanent stay, sparking speculation that the engine room could be set for a makeover.

BySean Markus Clifford Mar 21, 2025

Long-serving Tomas Soucek has been linked to Everton, again fanning flames that reinforcements to solidify the middle of the park may become a necessity in months to come.

Heeding that warning, Potter has now turned his attention to bringing one of England’s most promising youngsters to the London Stadium once the summer window opens.

West Ham eye half-price £10m move for Sunderland star Chris Rigg

According to The Sun, West Ham want to sign Sunderland star Chris Rigg and have him high on their list should the Black Cats fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season.

Despite being valued at around £20 million at the Stadium of Light, the Hammers feel he is worth closer to the £10 million mark and may try to proceed on those terms as they see the 17-year-old as an ideal fit for their domestic squad.

Compared to Jack Grealish and labelled “incredible” by former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini, Rigg has notched four goals and one assist in 36 appearances this term across all competitions.

Coming in as a long-term asset, he also carries the carrot of being a homegrown star that may benefit Potter’s men should they return to featuring in Europe later down the line.

Unlikely to be short of suitors this summer, West Ham now face a challenge on their hands to convince Rigg that they are the best fit for his development over the coming years.

Taskin Ahmed grabs four as Bangladesh annihilate Afghanistan in their biggest Test win

The foundation for the hosts’ 546-run win was laid by twin centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto

Mohammad Isam17-Jun-2023

Bangladesh 382 (Shanto 146, Mahmudul 76, Masood 5-79) and 425 for 4 dec (Shanto 124, Mominul 121*, Zahir 2-112) beat Afghanistan 146 (Zazai 36, Ebadot 4-47, Taijul 2-7) and 115 (Rahmat 30, Taskin 4-37, Shoriful 3-28) by 546 runsBangladesh beat Afghanistan by 546 runs in the one-off Test in Dhaka, thus achieving their highest victory margin in Tests, and the third highest in the format’s history. The visitors’ last man Zahir Khan took a blow to the elbow and retired hurt during an extended morning session on the fourth day, thus leaving the hosts with only nine second-innings wickets to take to complete the win. Some drama also took place just before that, as Bangladesh neared victory. Zahir was given out caught behind off the ball of the 33rd over, with Taskin Ahmed taking off to celebrate what he thought was his first five-for in Tests, only for the batter to overturn the decision on review, as replays showed the ball had missed the bat by an inch. The delivery immediately after, Taskin bowled Zahir, only for the ball to be deemed as an above-waist full toss, and thus a no-ball. Then three legal balls after that, Taskin crashed one into Zahir’s elbow, thus rendering him unable to bat. After a few minutes of discussion and medical attention, Zahir walked off. That confirmed a massive win for Bangladesh.Bangladesh’s fast bowlers combined to take 14 wickets in the match, the most for them in a Test. The hosts entered the fourth day requiring eight wickets to seal the win, which they duly did inside 22 overs although eventually they had to take one wicket lesser. It started in the third over of the day when Nasir Jamal could do little against a beautiful delivery from Ebadot Hossain: the ball pitched outside off and straightened just enough to tickle the batter’s outside edge.Next over, Rahmat Shah survived when he was given out caught in the slips off a snorter from Shoriful Islam, before the TV umpire determined that the ball had come off his armguard. But Shoriful didn’t have to wait too long for his first wicket of the morning: three overs later – the 19th of the innings – Afsar Zazai edged him to Mehidy Hasan Miraz at gully.Najmul Hossain Shanto cracked two centuries in Dhaka•AFP/Getty Images

As a result of that wicket, in came debutant Bahir Shah, who was brought in as concussion substitute for captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. But Shoriful ended the 21st over by having him caught at third slip, where Taijul Islam took a good, low catch. That meant Afghanistan were 78 for 5, which soon became 91 for 6 when Taskin had Rahmat Shah caught behind for 30 four overs later. Taskin’s third wicket came soon after, when he bowled Karim Janat for 18.That meant all of the seven wickets to fall had gone to Bangladesh’s fast bowlers, after which one finally went to a spinner. Brought into the attack to start the 32nd over, Mehidy struck third ball when he had Amir Hamza caught at short leg, where the ball landed after coming off his glove and helmet in an attempted pull shot. And next over, Taskin had Yamin Ahmadzai caught at mid-off to get his fourth. But Afghanistan’s troubles had begun on the third evening itself, when Shoriful had trapped Ibrahim Zadran lbw first ball, thus becoming the second Bangladesh bowler after Mashrafe Mortaza to start an innings with a wicket. Next over, Abdul Malik chased an away swinger from Taskin, only to be caught behind for 5.Come the sixth over, Taskin struck Shahidi on the head with a bouncer. Shahidi, who had ducked at the ball after seemingly taking his eyes off, fell flat on the pitch, before walking off retired hurt. Effectively, Afghanistan were three down, before Bahir would take Shahidi’s place. But much before those problems for Afghanistan, twin centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto – and one from Mominul Haque in the second innings – had already laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s triumph. They declared their second innings on 425 after obtaining a 236-run first-innings lead, thus setting Afghanistan an improbable 662. That eventually turned out to be more than enough for a commanding win.
