Leeds fans react to Will Huffer loan exit

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United confirmed on Friday that goalkeeper Will Huffer has joined National League outfit Barnet on a one-month loan deal.

Huffer came through the youth system at Leeds and made his debut for the Whites in the Championship against Bristol City back in November.

The arrival of Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid (BBC Sport) has pushed the 20-year-old down the pecking order at Elland Road, however, and he will spend the next month with Barnet.

Huffer, who is a former England Under-18 international, had been the understudy to Bailey Peacock-Farrell following Jamal Blackman’s season-ending injury.

However, Peacock-Farrell is now number two to Casilla, meaning that Huffer has left to secure some valuable first-team football at this stage of his career.

The Leeds fans have been reacting to the news on social media and it would be fair to say that they have differing opinions on the one-month loan deal.

Indeed, whilst some believe that it is right for Huffer to gain some first-team football, others are not sure whether it is the correct call considering the club are only another goalkeeping injury away from a potential crisis.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Leeds supporters can be seen below:

Everton transfer news on van de Beek

Many Everton fans have been left reacting to some transfer news that has emerged on Donny van de Beek.

Speaking on FIVE (via EFC DAILY), Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the Goodison Park faithful are ‘still interested’ in the Manchester United midfield player after wanting him at the end of August, and the deal could be an initial loan with in January with an option to buy in the summer transfer window.

Van de Beek has struggled to get regular game time at Old Trafford, as he has only managed to play in a mere five matches in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt), so there would certainly be question marks over his sharpness if he made the move to Merseyside.

However, that is not to say that he is not a quality player on his day, emphasised by his time at Ajax, where he managed to score 41 goals and make a further 34 assists in 175 appearances (Transfermarkt).

These Toffees supporters seemed split as the transfer news was shared on Twitter, perhaps unsurprising given his obvious quality but inability to break through in England so far…

Aston Villa suffer Douglas Luiz injury blow

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has suffered a major injury blow before his side’s Premier League clash against Brighton today.

What’s the story?

The former Rangers boss will take charge of his first game with his new club when the Seagulls come to town this afternoon, but the 41-year-old will be without the services of one of his team’s midfield lynchpins in Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian picked up a thigh problem ahead of the game against West Ham three weeks ago and has missed the last two games in the Premier League as a result, and it appears that he will not make it back for the visit of Brighton either.

Major setback for Gerrard

While Villa’s poor run of form has cast a dark cloud over the club in recent weeks, Luiz’s performances as a whole has actually been one of the rare shining lights.

While last season was a bit of a difficult one for the Brazilian – as per WhoScored, his average match rating of 6.67 was only good enough to rank him 15th in the entire Villa squad – his start to the current campaign has been outstanding.

In fact, his average rating of 7.0 is the best of any Villa player, and he continues to be a cornerstone of the midfield. Last term saw him play 33 out of the possible 38 Premier League games as the Midlands club finished just outside the top ten.

Reports over the course of the summer suggested that Serie A giants AS Roma were interested in signing the Brazil international, but a move failed to materialise.

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans shed some light on the situation and revealed: “They expected more interest in Douglas Luiz, too. Strong messages that Manchester City were ready to activate a buy-back clause found their way to members of the Villa hierarchy, and for some time they were preparing for such an outcome.

“Villa were also open to moving Luiz on elsewhere and at the right price, but there wasn’t enough interest… Roma continue to be linked with Luiz and if they come in strong during the January window, Villa will be in a good position to get a higher transfer fee should his form remain at this high level.”

In fact, in a recent poll on Football FanCast, 73% of Villa fans who answered said that they would not sell Luiz this summer (181 votes to 66) – an indication of just how concerning it would be were the Brazilian to make the move to Roma or somewhere else.

Given the 23-year-old’s importance to this Villa side, Gerrard will surely be gutted at not having Luiz to call upon for his first game in charge of the club against Brighton later today.

Meanwhile, Villa must finally sign this long-term transfer target…

Ange drops David Turnbull injury update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped an injury update concerning David Turnbull.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by Football Scotland, the Bhoys boss revealed that the midfielder’s hamstring injury picked up in the first half of the League Cup final victory over Hibernian on Sunday came as a result of fatigue, something which is down to the midfielder having started all but one of Celtic’s 34 fixtures so far this season.

Speaking about the 22-year-old’s knock, Postecoglou said: “David suffered from the number of games we are playing at the moment. We are suffering because of that. We have not been able to rotate the squad a lot and that is hurting us at the moment, picking up these injuries. We will just see how he is.”

Fans will be furious

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic side Turnbull has become under the management of Postecoglou, the fact that the midfielder looks set to spend a spell on the sidelines is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful furious.

Indeed, over his 18 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £4.5m-rated man has scored five goals, registered four assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of a whopping 4.1 key passes – the most of any player in the league – and taking 3.7 shots – the second-most in the division – per game.

These returns have seen the £14k-per-week Scotland international average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.87, ranking him as the joint-best performer in the entirety of the top flight.

As such, with several crucial fixtures coming up for the Hoops in the next few weeks, including January’s clash with their Old Firm rivals, the midfielder’s absence is sure to come as a major blow to Postecoglou and his side.

Without Turnbull’s creativity in the middle of the park, Celtic are undoubtedly a far poorer outfit.

Alan Nixon drops West Brom transfer update

Alan Nixon has dropped an update on West Bromwich Albion’s January transfer business.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Sun journalist revealed that Valerien Ismael’s side will have to sell at least two players before they can bring in any further additions in the January transfer window.

In response to a fan asking whether there were any potential moves on the horizon for the Baggies, Nixon simply said: “Need a couple out.”

Fans will be furious

While it is true that, following their relegation from the Premier League last season, the club’s budgets will undoubtedly be tighter than at this time last year, the news that Albion are already relying on player sales in order to fund further additions to the club this winter is sure to have left The Hawthorns faithful furious.

Indeed, aside from the £7.77m signing of Daryl Dike earlier this month, West Brom have not spent a penny on incoming transfers since the arrival of Ismael, despite the fact the club sold Matheus Pereira, Ahmed Hegazy and Rekeem Harper for a combined £18.97m last summer.

Furthermore, the Baggies also managed to get both Charlie Austin and Kieran Gibbs off of their books, with the duo having previously been the club’s top two earners – taking home a whopping £70k-per-week and £55k-per-week respectively.

As such, while, as previously stated, West Brom’s purse strings will be understandably tighter this season, it is still somewhat difficult to believe that Ismael could not spend at least the remaining £11.2m he had previously received from player sales last summer.

Indeed, this amount of money spent in the January window would undoubtedly go an extremely long way to helping the Baggies secure an automatic promotion spot come the end of the season – something which would be worth a great deal more to the club in the long run than an £11.2m outlay this month.

Phil Hay namedrops potential Bielsa successor

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed that Club Brugge manager Philippe Clement was “mentioned” as a potential Marcelo Bielsa successor at Leeds United.

What’s the story?

During a Q&A for The Athletic, the journalist said: “Gasperini is a very interesting shout. I don’t have a name but I’m told that Leeds knew who they would go for if Bielsa had decided that one season in the Premier League was enough. They had a plan in place if they had to move suddenly.

“One name mentioned to me (but I really am just speculating here) was Phillipe Clement at Club Brugge. The one thing we all know is that it’s going to be a massive transition, not just of coaching staff but most likely of players too. And it’s going to be a huge call.”

Been superb for Club Brugge

According to The Examiner Live, “Clement adopts an aggressive pressing tactic high up the pitch”, while “his preferred formation is 4-3-3” – both of which should be music to the ears of Leeds fans.

Bielsa has built an identity at Elland Road based all around hard work and intensity off the ball, and it appears Clement is built from that same managerial cloth.

He has also won back-to-back league titles in Belgium and also picked up a domestic cup to his name too, while he has also presided over some pretty impressive results in the Champions League in particular.

This season alone has seen Brugge pick up a superb 1-1 draw against French giants PSG in the opening game of the group stages, while they followed that performance and result up with an outstanding 2-1 win away at RB Leipzig.

At just 47 years old, Clement appears to be the archetypal modern coach who seems well-equipped to step into Bielsa’s shoes should the Argentine call it quits sometime in the near future.

The tactical styles seem quite similar, while Clement’s experience at leading teams out in the Champions League and winning league titles domestically should also bode well for the future at Elland Road.

While the prospect of seeing Bielsa leave is sure to have fans worried, bringing in someone like Clement would surely be exciting.

Meanwhile, Bielsa could sign his own Mason Mount in this star…

Everton transfer news on Ikone

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing as some transfer news emerged on Jonathan Ikone.

As per Milan Live, both the Goodison Park faithful as well as West Ham United are ‘seriously considering’ signing the LOSC Lille ace, while AC Milan have also been named as a possible destination.

He was a player who was a mainstay in the team that won the Ligue 1 title ahead of PSG so impressively last season, missing only one game and recording nine goal contributions (Transfermarkt).

Ikone would certainly be an upgrade on Alex Iwobi, given that he has averaged more shots (1.3), key passes (1.1), dribbles (1.1) in their respective domestic leagues so far this term (WhoScored), and the latter has not exactly hit the ground running on Merseyside.

At 23 years of age, the France international has not reached his peak yet as well, and so would be an exciting buy for the Toffees.

LFC fans fume at Fabrizio Romano claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after journalist Fabrizio Romano played down a potential move for Porto forward Luis Diaz.

The Reds have had a quiet time of things in terms of transfers in recent years, only bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig last summer.

There is an increasing need to invest in new signings, however, with Jurgen Klopp’s squad beginning to age together, as numerous players either hit their 30s or come close to it – the famous front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will all be the wrong side of 30 by the end of this campaign.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

It could be that a new attacker is looked at in the summer, if not in the January transfer window, and Diaz has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Mane in particular has been heavily criticised by fans for his form this season, leading to plenty of excitement when the links to Diaz popped up earlier this week.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, however, Romano played down the rumour, saying that no talks are currently taking place between the two clubs.

Newcastle dealt Callum Wilson setback

A devastating Newcastle United injury setback on striker Callum Wilson has emerged…

What’s the latest?

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has revealed that the forward has not been able to recover on schedule after going away with the rest of the squad in Dubai. He has also relayed that Eddie Howe is now changing his plans over the Englishman’s schedule due to this latest setback.

Edwards tweeted: “Bad news on Callum Wilson. Having started running in Dubai his recovery is not progressing as hoped. Howe admitted today plan for him to return is being pushed back.”

Gutted

This news will surely leave Newcastle supporters gutted for multiple reasons.

Firstly, they will be disappointed that they will not be able to see Wilson out on the pitch when they may expected him back. He is a proven Premier League performer and the fans he know is capable of finding the net regularly when given the opportunity, as he has scored 18 top-flight goals since the start of 2020/21.

Therefore, the Toon are currently dealing without his goalscoring prowess at the top end of the pitch and it is a huge blow to the side. Despite not playing a single minute of football in 2022, he remains the club’s top scorer in the league this season, which illustrates his importance to the team.

They will also be gutted with this update because of what it may mean heading into next season. Since joining the Magpies in 2020, Wilson has suffered seven separate injury issues and missed 29 competitive games in less than two full campaigns.

He has been unreliable for the Toon in terms of his availability, and being fit is a player’s most important attribute, given that it allows them to perform on the pitch. Howe will surely not want to go into next season with a first-choice striker who seems likely to miss a number of games because of his propensity to pick up knocks.

This may lead to the club looking to replace him in the summer. PIF and Howe could decide that they want to go for a player with a better injury record in an attempt to nail down that position instead of crossing their fingers and hoping for the best every time Wilson steps foot on the pitch, which is why this is a devastating development for the forward as it could put his future into question.

Supports would be gutted with this because of what he has been able to deliver on the pitch for the club whenever he has been fit. His 18 goals over the past 20 months for the Magpies have been pivotal to helping the side to remain in the Premier League, and fans will surely be upset if injuries continue to curtail his time as the main man at St James’ Park.

Liverpool fans love Harvey Elliott update

Some Liverpool supporters are delighted after Jurgen Klopp provided a positive injury update on the progress of youngster Harvey Elliott.

The 18-year-old is one of the most exciting young players in the country, having arrived at Anfield from Fulham back in 2019.

Elliott was a key player for the Reds at the beginning of the season, starting three Premier League matches and performing well every time, registering seven shots and creating five chances across those starts.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

Unfortunately, the teenager suffered a broken ankle in the 3-0 win at Leeds United back in September and he has been recovering ever since.

It now looks as though Elliott’s return could be close, however, with Klopp confirming in his pre-Crystal Palace press conference [via James Pearce on Twitter] that he ‘should be ready’ after the upcoming international break.
