The long road to the World Cup

Charlie Austin previews the forthcoming Indian Oil Cup

At first glance, the Indian Oil Cup may appear an irrelevance in comparison
to the last India-Pakistan face-off or the (what we thought might be)
classic 2005 Ashes contest underway in England. For starters, there will be
no Sachin Tendulkar and no Brian Lara. Worse, because of the West Indies
player dispute, barring a sudden and miraculous flowering of batting talent,
there will be little competition. The first six ‘group’ matches will lead to
one sadly inevitable knockout and then Sri Lanka and India will play their
82nd match against each other in the final. The winner of the toss will bat
first and then, according to the statistics, have a 75% chance of carrying
away a trophy that will gather dust in a cricket board storeroom. The
organisers have even denied us the innovation of Super Subs and Power Plays because the tournament starts 48 hours before the rules become mandatory: but perhaps that’s wise considering their now-obvious flaws.Dig a little deeper and you can, thankfully, shelve some your
cynicism. India’s arrival in Dambulla, a central town famous for its
Buddhist Cave temples and bustling vegetable markets, has been accompanied by a
huge India media contingent. Journalists, commentators, photographers and TV
interviewers have helped fill up the hotels and will leave the press box
overflowing. They are travelling because
this Indian Oil Cup, for its likely predictability, marks the start of a
20-month road to the 2007 World Cup. Moreover, for both India and Sri Lanka,
it heralds the beginning of new eras under their new high-profile Australian
coaches, Greg Chappell and Tom Moody. For several months this year we all witnessed one of the most publicised and
farcical processes in the history of recruiting cricket coaches. While
India and Sri Lanka’s players put their feet up for a well-deserved rest,
the administrators swung into the limelight with considerable pomposity
to find replacements for John Wright and John Dyson. Both boards shortlisted the same men; happily, after a host of headline-grabbing
interviews in June, both got the man they wanted most. After all the press
conferences and interviews and news-bites the action starts for real and
people in both countries are anxious to know whether their new man has got
what it takes to turn their team into world champions. The Indian Oil Cup could provide fascinating insights into each team’s new
direction: will Sri Lanka shuffle around the batting order? Will Moody
discover the seam bowling allrounder that Sri Lanka coaches have been praying for
over the last five years? Will India’s new star, MS Dhoni, open the batting in
Tendulkar’s absence, forming an explosive alliance with Virender Sehwag – or
will VVS Laxman be used as a steadying influence up top? Will Chappell’s
tenure herald an era of greater flexibility with the batting? Will India
stop losing finals? Will Chappell insist his players drink Soya milk for
breakfast? Answers to these questions, and a few more besides, are eagerly awaited. For India, there are other matters of significance, the most important of
which is the future of their captain, Sourav Ganguly. His team’s slow over-rates during the Pakistan series could have the severest consequences,
speeding up his exit from the leadership and, conceivably for all those not
living in Kolkata, even the one-day team. The Indian cricket board failed in their renewed appeal to quash his ICC ban. Ganguly will now miss at least India’s first two matches
and that means handing over the reins to Rahul Dravid, the heir apparent, and, more dangerously, giving one of India’s young guns his place in the batting order.Ganguly has clearly played an instrumental part in India’s rising fortunes
this decade. His sharp mind, passion and steely determination have rubbed
off on his players. With John Wright organising, encouraging and polishing
in the background, Ganguly has lifted the team upwards and made them a
serious force in international cricket. No longer can they be ridiculed for
being soft-bellied and weak-kneed abroad. They are stronger, tougher and
even more crazily idolised by their fans back home. But every journey has an
ending and Ganguly, now 33, appears to have reached a crucial juncture in
his career. His batting form has dipped and, unless he can bounce back soon,
then his place in the side may become unjustifiable.Chappell has backed the captain to return, but he’s also been looking ahead:
“If we can put the building blocks in place here [Sri Lanka] to build some
success over the next couple of years then we will put ourselves in a better
position come 2007,” he told reporters on Thursday. And in the absence of
Ganguly and Tendulkar his mantra is “flexibility”. “The more flexibility you
have the more options you have available to you under all circumstances. We
are in a situation now where we have two key players out and if you don’t
have flexibility you run into problems. If we can build a squad that is
15-20 strong then we will have a lot less problems when we have key players
out of form or out of action.”

MS Dhoni: thrill-seekers will be keen for him to be included © Getty Images

India are being so flexible that everyone is still guessing about their
batting line-up. Thrill-seekers are desperate to see Dhoni given the nod as
Sehwag’s opening partner. Old wags in the press corps, though, predict
Laxman to be called up as an interim opener. The presence of Yuvraj Singh at
No. 3 in both practice games has also caused a stir, but Chappell merely
stands in front of the cameras and says “we are looking at all options” and
“nothing has been decided”.Ganguly’s counterpart, Marvan Atapattu, has no such problems. Although
Atapattu’s natural accession to the full captaincy after the resignation of
Sanath Jayasuriya in 2003 was surprisingly delayed, slowed by shadowy but
powerful detractors within the establishment, he has now cemented his
leadership at least until the 2007 World Cup. If Arjuna Ranatunga’s
leadership was dictatorial and Jayasuriya’s consensual, Atapattu’s style
fits somewhere in between, being both strong and egalitarian. Atapattu has
brushed away the last vestiges of feudalism within the dressing-room and
communicates his expectations clearly. On the field, unlike Jayasuriya, he
remains calm, relaxed and in control. The result is a happy and settled squad anxious to start a long year on a
successful note. During the last nine months they have played
just one ODI, a game in New Zealand that was swiftly followed by tragedy on
an unprecedented scale. The Asian tsunami forced the cancellation of that
tour and then a short ODI tour to India was axed, in part owing to the cricket board crisis in March, when the government launched a takeover of the cricket administration. A Mickey Mouse tournament was
held in Abu Dhabi and a few of the players have been involved in
tsunami-related charity matches or county cricket, but most have played
precious little. The break from non-stop touring will leave the players,
like the Indians, a little ring-rusty but at least they should be refreshed
and ready for the action-packed year ahead.During the Indian Oil Cup Atapattu and Moody will hopefully unveil some
clues to their early World Cup thinking but, in truth, few great changes are
anticipated. Sri Lanka already have a mightily effective formula for winning
matches on slow subcontinental pitches, a strategy that revolves around
their top order piling up runs and their spinners, the specialists and the
part-timers, slowly strangling the run chase. The team is vastly experienced
and there are not many places up for grabs before the 2007 World Cup. The
main issues to be resolved are the batting order, especially the openers and
the identity of the allrounders. The selectors have made significant changes at the top, axing
Avishka Gunawardene and Saman Jayantha, good-but-not-great batsmen that have
been rotated in-and-out during the past few years. Both have been given
chances, but have positively influenced or won too few matches as Jayasuriya’s opening partner, especially overseas. Yet, in ODIs, the top four
positions in the order are prime real estate, offering quality batters the
best opportunity of playing themselves in and positively influencing the
outcome of the match. Sri Lanka, though, have for far too long been wasting
precious overs on run-of-the-mill openers.Moody has identified Jayasuriya’s partner as an urgent issue: “We need to
develop some stability at the top of the order,” he told Cricinfo. “In the
past couple of years we have had a lot of players occupying that opening
position and I would like to think that with time we could get some
stability there. I don’t want to shake-up the order as it has been a
successful formula, but the opening position has been a revolving door – I
would like to close it so we all know what roles we are playing.”

Upul Tharanga: chance to make a name for himself
© Getty Images

Upul Tharanga, a 20-year-old, has been given the opportunity to stake his
claim during the tournament. Marvan Atapattu has made it clear that he likes
the balance created by him at No 3 and also someone with the quality and
experience of Mahela Jayawardene at No 5 in the middle order. This rules out
the option of Sri Lanka reverting to their Test line-up in ODIs. So
Tharanga, a left-hander with sweet timing, is set to open throughout the
tournament.Moody is also keen, like Dav Whatmore and John Dyson before him, to find the
elusive seam-bowling allrounder that will balance the team. “I would like to
think that we can produce a world class seam bowling allrounder; an
allrounder that can be relied on with bat and ball. It is good to have
spinning allrounders in the sub-continent but they are not the players that
win or influence matches as much as seam-bowling allrounders outside the
subcontinent.”Sadly, for non-cricketing reasons, West Indies are the firm underdogs. A
ridiculous and sad sponsorship dispute – an obvious problem that should have
been identified well before the signing away of exclusive player image
rights to Digicel by the West Indies Cricket Board – has led to 10 leading
players refusing to sign tour contracts, meaning a whole raft of freshers
have been polevaulted into the senior team. The result is a West Indies team
that contains some promising bowlers, but a crippling shortage of batting
talent. Unless Shivnarine Chanderpaul, their captain, stars in each and
every outing their qualification to the final is inconceivable.Hopefully, in a game that is famous for its glorious uncertainties, they can
defy the predictions of cynical pundits. Certainly, the Indian Oil Cup needs
them to rise to the occasion. All the intrigue about the new Chappell and
Moody regimes will only be able to sustain our interest so long.

Short and Perry conspire to crush New South Wales

Short’s second straight ton and Perry’s eight wickets give Victoria a 10-wicket win in what could be Copeland’s final appearance for NSW

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Mar-2023Matthew Short’s second consecutive Sheffield Shield century and eight wickets from Mitchell Perry has helped Victoria trounce New South Wales by ten wickets inside three days in Trent Copeland’s likely farewell from first-class cricket in Albury.Short added 23 to his overnight score of 81 to post his second century in as many outings, having not scored one in his previous 64 Shield innings, to help Victoria post a sizeable first-innings lead of 128.Perry then continued his stellar form with the ball picking up 4 for 30 as New South Wales folded for 130 in their second innings. Perry finished with eight wickets for the match and has taken 19 Shield scalps in his last three matches. Short chimed in with two wickets to complete a wonderful allround performance while stand-in captain Will Sutherland also picked up two.Copeland was given a guard of honour as he left the field in what could be his final appearance for NSW. He finished with 3 for 63 from 30 overs. If it is his final appearance, he will finish with 344 Shield scalps, equal 11th all-time and the third most for NSW. He has taken 410 first-class wickets overall, including six Test wickets in three Tests, with 21 five-wicket hauls.Short proved an obstacle for Copeland and his fellow NSW bowlers on the third morning as he cruised to his century. Having lost Sam Harper, he got great support from Fergus O’Neill who made 24 not out. Short fell to Chris Green, caught at short leg for 104, but Victoria added 67 valuable runs to their overnight total for the final four wickets to lift the lead beyond three figures.NSW’s second innings started disastrously as they slumped to 16 for 3, losing all three in just two overs as Perry and Cameron McClure did the damage with seam movement and some extra bounce. NSW lost wickets at regular intervals after that, with Sutherland and Perry tearing through the middle order before Short was on a hat-trick to give Victoria a chance at an innings victory.Green managed to single-handedly avoid that, making 39 not out to ensure Victoria batted again but they had no trouble knocking off three runs needed. NSW opener Daniel Hughes did not bat in the second innings after retiring hurt with a calf injury in the first innings on day one.Victoria remain third on the Shield table and still have a chance of playing in back-to-back finals but they head to Western Australia to face the ladder leaders in the final round. NSW remain winless with one game to go against South Australia.

'It's not rocket science' – CPL's CEO asks T20 leagues to collaborate on scheduling

Several leagues ran simultaneously at the start of 2024, and the ICC Champions Trophy is expected to further complicate the picture in February 2025

Matt Roller08-May-2024

“It makes zero sense if you’ve got [Sunil] Narine and [Andre] Russell having to fly back the day before the final of the Hundred” – CPL’s CEO Pete Russell•BCCI

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL)’s chief executive has described overlaps between franchise leagues as “a nonsense”, and has called for regular meetings among their owners and administrators in an attempt to solve cricket’s global scheduling crisis. The CPL has overlapped with the Hundred in recent years but will avoid a clash this season after holding talks with the ECB earlier this year. And Pete Russell, one of CPL’s co-founders and the league’s CEO since 2021, believes that such collaboration should be commonplace to minimise the frequent clashes between the T20 leagues.”[The ECB] have a defined window that they have to play in, and it happened that we could move everything out to ensure that we didn’t clash [with the Hundred],” Russell told ESPNcricinfo. “It makes absolutely zero sense if you’ve got [Sunil] Narine and [Andre] Russell having to fly back the day before the final of the Hundred. That’s in no one’s interests, and certainly not the Hundred’s.Related

PSL set for IPL clash as PCB proposes move to April-May window

'A broken sport': Franchise free-for-all compromises players' incentives

“I hope that [collaboration] continues. It’s not rocket science; it’s what should happen with all leagues. It’s just a nonsense that we’ve got all this overlap when it just needs to be worked through. Scheduling is a challenge, I know, but it can’t be that you have two leagues going at each other at the same time. To my mind, it doesn’t make any sense.”There is a precedent for leagues negotiating to manage potential clashes as shown by the PSL and ILT20.Several different leagues ran simultaneously at the start of 2024. Australia’s BBL and New Zealand’s Super Smash finished in mid-January; South Africa’s SA20 and the UAE’s ILT20 started in January and ran into February; the Bangladesh Premier League started in January and finished in March; and the Pakistan Super League ran from mid-February to mid-March.The ICC Champions Trophy is expected to further complicate the picture when it returns in February 2025. The ILT20 is expected to confirm its dates for 2025 in the coming days following recent discussions with franchises, while the PCB has stated its intention to stage the PSL alongside the IPL in April-May 2025.There is broad support among players worldwide for global scheduling windows for franchise leagues and international cricket, thus minimising overlap between the two. The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) player survey will be published soon, and as confirmed to ESPNcricinfo by Tom Moffat, FICA’s CEO, will show that 84% of the 330 respondents support introducing windows. The MLC this year is set for a six-day clash with the Hundred•Sportzpics

“Unless the game can come together to find a system in which the domestic leagues and international cricket can co-exist, we will end up with two separate calendars running in parallel,” Moffat told ESPNcricinfo.”That will split the player employment-market, given most of the leagues rely on the inclusion of international players to be successful commercially. We currently don’t think that’s the right thing for the whole sport given it – and most professional players’ employment – is still largely funded by international cricket.”While representatives of national governing bodies meet regularly at ICC level – most of whom control their own leagues – there is no specific forum for the owners and administrators of franchise leagues to discuss scheduling.”It’s the logical way to go – because we’re all maturing, and we’re all getting to a point where we are sustainable,” Russell said. “They are generally regarded now as being part of the domestic calendar, wherever they are played. I think it is a case of, ‘OK, let’s have that group of people and say how do you figure out the schedule to the benefit of everyone?'”I think it’s workable. Others might think it’s not, but I just think the conversations at least need to take place, just to make sure [there’s no clash].”Moffat said: “With the exception of CPL and a couple of others, the controlling stake in most of the major leagues is generally owned by the same national governing bodies who schedule international cricket. That means co-ordinating scheduling between the leagues and international cricket to avoid scheduling overlap is possible – if there is a will to come together and do that.”Russell used the recent release of Major League Cricket (MLC)’s 2024 fixture list – two months before the tournament starts – as evidence of a shortage of “joined-up thinking” among administrators. MLC begins on July 5, and is thus set for a six-day clash with the Hundred.”They’ve only just come out with their schedule,” he said. “Why does it take leagues so long to put a schedule together? We have all year to figure it out.”Russell also encouraged administrators to find a solution to the perverse incentives that emerged for players earlier this year.”It can’t be right: I saw the other day that where leagues were overlapping, a player who got knocked out before the semi-finals or finals could actually make more money by going to another league. That shouldn’t be a thing.”

Taskin Ahmed grabs four as Bangladesh annihilate Afghanistan in their biggest Test win

The foundation for the hosts’ 546-run win was laid by twin centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto

Bangladesh 382 (Shanto 146, Mahmudul 76, Masood 5-79) and 425 for 4 dec (Shanto 124, Mominul 121*, Zahir 2-112) beat Afghanistan 146 (Zazai 36, Ebadot 4-47, Taijul 2-7) and 115 (Rahmat 30, Taskin 4-37, Shoriful 3-28) by 546 runsBangladesh beat Afghanistan by 546 runs in the one-off Test in Dhaka, thus achieving their highest victory margin in Tests, and the third highest in the format’s history. The visitors’ last man Zahir Khan took a blow to the elbow and retired hurt during an extended morning session on the fourth day, thus leaving the hosts with only nine second-innings wickets to take to complete the win. Some drama also took place just before that, as Bangladesh neared victory. Zahir was given out caught behind off the ball of the 33rd over, with Taskin Ahmed taking off to celebrate what he thought was his first five-for in Tests, only for the batter to overturn the decision on review, as replays showed the ball had missed the bat by an inch. The delivery immediately after, Taskin bowled Zahir, only for the ball to be deemed as an above-waist full toss, and thus a no-ball. Then three legal balls after that, Taskin crashed one into Zahir’s elbow, thus rendering him unable to bat. After a few minutes of discussion and medical attention, Zahir walked off. That confirmed a massive win for Bangladesh.Bangladesh’s fast bowlers combined to take 14 wickets in the match, the most for them in a Test. The hosts entered the fourth day requiring eight wickets to seal the win, which they duly did inside 22 overs although eventually they had to take one wicket lesser. It started in the third over of the day when Nasir Jamal could do little against a beautiful delivery from Ebadot Hossain: the ball pitched outside off and straightened just enough to tickle the batter’s outside edge.Next over, Rahmat Shah survived when he was given out caught in the slips off a snorter from Shoriful Islam, before the TV umpire determined that the ball had come off his armguard. But Shoriful didn’t have to wait too long for his first wicket of the morning: three overs later – the 19th of the innings – Afsar Zazai edged him to Mehidy Hasan Miraz at gully.Najmul Hossain Shanto cracked two centuries in Dhaka•AFP/Getty Images

As a result of that wicket, in came debutant Bahir Shah, who was brought in as concussion substitute for captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. But Shoriful ended the 21st over by having him caught at third slip, where Taijul Islam took a good, low catch. That meant Afghanistan were 78 for 5, which soon became 91 for 6 when Taskin had Rahmat Shah caught behind for 30 four overs later. Taskin’s third wicket came soon after, when he bowled Karim Janat for 18.That meant all of the seven wickets to fall had gone to Bangladesh’s fast bowlers, after which one finally went to a spinner. Brought into the attack to start the 32nd over, Mehidy struck third ball when he had Amir Hamza caught at short leg, where the ball landed after coming off his glove and helmet in an attempted pull shot. And next over, Taskin had Yamin Ahmadzai caught at mid-off to get his fourth. But Afghanistan’s troubles had begun on the third evening itself, when Shoriful had trapped Ibrahim Zadran lbw first ball, thus becoming the second Bangladesh bowler after Mashrafe Mortaza to start an innings with a wicket. Next over, Abdul Malik chased an away swinger from Taskin, only to be caught behind for 5.Come the sixth over, Taskin struck Shahidi on the head with a bouncer. Shahidi, who had ducked at the ball after seemingly taking his eyes off, fell flat on the pitch, before walking off retired hurt. Effectively, Afghanistan were three down, before Bahir would take Shahidi’s place. But much before those problems for Afghanistan, twin centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto – and one from Mominul Haque in the second innings – had already laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s triumph. They declared their second innings on 425 after obtaining a 236-run first-innings lead, thus setting Afghanistan an improbable 662. That eventually turned out to be more than enough for a commanding win.

Arteta can finally axe Merino by starting "unplayable" Arsenal star up top

It’s been a season full of surprises for Arsenal fans this year.

For example, we aren’t sure many people saw Manchester City’s dramatic collapse in form coming, nor Liverpool’s sensational form under new boss Arne Slot.

However, perhaps the one that would have shocked fans the most had you told them back in the summer is the fact that, for all intents and purposes, Mikel Merino is now the club’s starting number nine.

A failure to reinforce the frontline and an absurd number of injuries has forced Mikel Arteta to play the Spaniard up top for over a month now, and while he hasn’t done terribly, it may be time to try something else and start arguably the most exciting player in the squad ahead of him.

Arteta's Merino alternatives

Before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other members in the squad Arteta could, but probably shouldn’t, turn to as a replacement for Merino.

The first option, which would almost certainly be met with significant backlash, would be to bring Raheem Sterling back into the starting line-up.

Now, the argument for this would be that he’s played as a central striker several times before and has a fairly decent record when doing so, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists there in 28 games for Manchester City.

However, that was quite some time ago, and to put it diplomatically, he has been dismal for the Gunners this term, so much so, in fact, that the manager has only started him ten times across the entire season, despite the injury crisis.

The second option would be to play Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli there, and while this would be far more popular than the prior idea, there are still some issues.

For example, neither player has been in particularly good form this season, with the former racking up just 13 goal involvements in 43 games and the latter 11 in 38, so having them as the club’s focal attacking point seems unwise at the moment.

Furthermore, if Arteta plays the Belgian on the left and the Brazilian on the right, he can make the bold and potentially correct decision to play the club’s most exciting attacker down the middle.

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Arsenal star who should replace Merino

With Bukayo Saka unlikely to start a game for a few more weeks, it would be fair to say that the most exciting player currently in the squad is Ethan Nwaneri, and Arteta should be bold enough to start him up top in place of Merino.

Now, there is certainly an argument to be made that a decision such as this would put enormous pressure on the youngster, and while that is true, he’s shown us this season that pressure means very little to him.

Moreover, the potential upsides of starting such a dynamic and incisive player at the tip of the spear are massive and could be just the thing to help the team get into some form ahead of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid next month.

For example, despite playing just 1087 minutes across 29 first-team appearances this season, the often “unplayable” ace, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, has scored eight goals and provided one assist.

That means that at just 18 years old, the Hale End superstar is averaging a goal involvement every 120.77 minutes, which for a winger come midfielder is a brilliant rate of return.

Finally, we wouldn’t be surprised if this idea was already in Arteta’s head, as it was only in December that he told the press that the teenage sensation could develop into a striker due to his instinctive ability to finish.

Ultimately, while Merino has done his best in the circumstances, it’s time the manager played someone who could make the most of goalscoring opportunities up top, and from what we have seen this season, that could be Nwaneri.

While speaking with , Robert Lewandowski reflected on his third season at Barcelona, where he ended the campaign with a stunning 42 goals across all competitions. When asked about his possible successor, the 36-year-old admitted that "it's not easy" to find his replacement and even top-tier forwards like Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyokeres might struggle to replicate his scoring consistency at the Catalan giants.

The Polish goal machine Lewy's comments come at a crucial time for Barcelona, as the club navigates a rebuild under coach Hansi Flick. Despite being in the twilight of his career, Lewandowski remains a central figure and continues to silence critics concerned about his age. His remarks about the lack of long-term high-output strikers highlights his self-confidence and the growing scarcity of reliable goal-striking strikers in world football.

WHAT LEWANDOWSKI SAID

With Barca’s system demanding a well-rounded forward, replacing Lewandowski won't be just about the talent: "I haven't seen many players so far who play at their best for more than two or three years and score more than 40 goals. That's why it's not easy, and I'm talking about a player who hasn't just made a mark in one or two seasons, but in three, four, five, and more. And that's not easy."

Lewandowski was asked if Haaland or Gyokeres could be his successor, replying: “I think the club also has some players in other positions, but in the end, you have to have a perfect solution for the signing, but also for the club, the coach, or the system you want to play in. Finding a goal-scoring striker isn't easy in football these days."
