There has been a lot of talk about how Tottenham Hotspur supposedly messed up when they allowed Troy Parrott to leave the club after his international heroics.

The Ireland international scored five goals in two games for his country during the current international break, which included a last-gasp goal to qualify for the World Cup play-offs.

Parrott struck twice in a 2-0 win over Portugal, in a game that Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in, before netting an extraordinary hat-trick against Hungary in their second match.

Given his goal output and the importance of those goals to Ireland, the 23-year-old centre-forward has been a hot topic in football in the last week or so.

That has made some question Tottenham’s decision to sell him to AZ Alkmaar for a reported fee of £7m in the summer of 2024, after he came up through the youth ranks in North London.

Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood recently said said: “I’ve got a big question for anyone who decided to let Troy Parrott go. I’m not sure he had a fair opportunity to prove himself, he’s had to go to AZ to do that.”

Why Spurs should not be blamed for selling Troy Parrott

Whilst Sherwood may be right that he did not get much of an opportunity at Spurs, with four first-team appearances, the Lilywhites should not be blamed for cashing in on him last year.

After a return of 31 goals in 38 games for Spurs at U18, Youth League, and U21 level, per Transfermarkt, the Irish marksman was given a chance to showcase his quality over a series of loans.

Unfortunately, Parrott largely struggled in his domestic loans in League One and the Championship before enjoying a strong spell with Excelsior in the Netherlands, which led to his £7m move to AZ Alkmaar.

As you can see in the table above, the Spurs youngster did not offer much of a regular goal threat in his two spells at Championship level with Millwall and Preston.

That is why it is hard to blame Tottenham, who aim to compete at the top end of the Premier League and in Europe, for cashing in on Parrott, as he had not shown much potential in English football at senior level.

The Irishman, as shown in the graphic above, then went on to hit a career-high 20 goals in all competitions in his first season with AZ Alkmaar, and currently has 13 goals in 14 matches, per Transfermarkt.

Whilst his form for club and country in the present day makes it look like Tottenham were wrong to cash in on him, they made a decision that did make sense on the evidence that they had available to them at the time.

Of course, you can still argue that it was a mistake, as he only played four matches for the first-team, but it is one that those in power in North London in the present day can use as a learning experience moving forward.

With this in mind, current first-team manager Thomas Frank, who was not at the club when Parrott was sold, should use the Irishman’s situation as a reference point when dealing with a star who is currently struggling out on loan.

Spurs youngster Jamie Donley is struggling to get a game on loan with Stoke City in the Championship, but he could be the next Troy Parrott in the making.

Why Spurs need to keep their faith with Jamie Donley

Donley has been earning rave reviews from many in recent years, including from reporter Charlie Eccleshare.

Speaking on a podcast for The Athletic in early 2024, he said: “He’s not a pure striker, he’s a nine and a half, some have compared him to Harry Kane, and someone I spoke to the other day compared him to Julian Alvarez.”

Since then, however, Donley has not really kicked on. In a bid to help him to do just that, the Lilywhites sent the 20-year-old talent on loan to Stoke for the 2025/26 campaign in the hope that he would improve and gain valuable experience in the second tier, as they did when they sent Parrott to Millwall and Preston.

However, the Northern Irish attacking midfielder has only played four times in the Championship, all off the bench, and has been an unused substitute on eight occasions in the league, per Transfermarkt.

The Spurs loanee, who assisted a goal on his debut against Derby, has also failed to make the matchday squad for their last three league matches, which suggests that he is not in Mark Robins’ plans.

Despite his lack of game time at club level with the Potters, Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill has kept faith in the playmaker, as he played against Slovakia and Luxembourg during the international break.

Donley scored from the penalty spot against Luxembourg on Monday night and was described as the “best player on the pitch” by the Northern Ireland manager after the game.

Along with his international performances, Spurs should also keep faith in the 20-year-old attacker because of his form on loan at Leyton Orient in the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Donley was an exceptional performer at League One level last season with Leyton Orient, ranking in the top percentile of his positional peers as a creative force in the number ten position.

These statistics, his form for Northern Ireland, and his return of 37 goals and 30 assists in 90 matches for Spurs at U18 and U21 level, per Transfermarkt, suggest that he has far more potential than his stint at Stoke suggests.

This is why Tottenham should not give up on Donley because of his struggles out on loan this season, as he has not been given a single start in the Championship and could still have a future in North London if given a chance at Spurs or at another club on loan.

Parrott struggled out on loan in the Championship and was sold to go on to greater things. Tottenham can learn from that by providing Donley with the chances that the Ireland hero did not get.

The New York Mets signed free agent Juan Soto during the offseason, luring him to Queens with little more than a 15-year, $765 million deal. f that sounds like a lot, well, it is. And not just because it's the largest contract in sports history.

It also dwarfs the amount that 22 other teams combined to pay free agents this winter. Yes, more than two-thirds of the league combined. That's how much the Mets spent on Soto. ESPN's Jeff Passan spelled it out in a column on Tuesday.

Soto will account for $51,875,000 of the Mets' MLB-leading $301,950,000 payroll this season. The Marlins are currently on the books for just $43,630,000 this coming season. The Athletics are one more firesale away from dropping below Soto's figure as well.

And don't count out the White Sox moving Andrew Benintendi or Luis Robert Jr. to fall behind Soto either. Those are the only players on their roster who will make more than $6 million this season. The Mets have 13 players making more than that in 2025.

Pant has been ruled out of next week’s fifth Test at The Oval, which starts on Thursday, and replaced in the India squad by N Jagadeesan. Mitchell Marsh’s 117 off 64 balls powered Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a mammoth 235 for 2 against Gujarat Titans (GT) on a black-soil pitch in Ahmedabad. Fans have reacted furiously after Hashtag United announced the signing of two AI players, called Holly and Harvey. Unfortunately they are both currently suffering from the fairly rare case of “missing body syndrome” but both miraculously passed their medicals with flying colours. In the meantime they will start work right away representing the club and creating content. Please give them a big Hashtag welcome and drop them a follow."

• The majority of fans are not happy

  The reaction came thick and fast following the announcement, with the response mixed between outrage and others urging calm over the stunt. 

  @CalMosFooty said: "Unlike some, I’ve always supported the Hashtag United journey in football from early days to now. But my oh my, they have had an absolute shocker with this. Game is absolutely gone. Keep this crap as far away from football as possible.”

  Another fan, @Nebrisbeefsaid: "Spencer… We all know you are not dumb, so please stop this stupid bs before it goes further, you have a child, respect it and stop killing the world it has to grow up in, both environment wise as online world wise…”

  @mxrwanlfc said: "Is this how you’re using investor’s funds? AI garbage? We were told the club would expand the social media team and this is what you come up with? Very disappointing.”

  And there was this from Joe Christmas @68c6c8f2872948f, who said: “All positive thoughts about hashtag, mostly built up by Spencer about 10 years ago now, well and truly in the bin. The social media club has no clue about the feelings about AI on social media. Pack it up lads, time to get back in the office and off the golf course.” 

  But there was a call for calm from @TheUnknownMando, who said: "People not understanding the actual sarcasm/joke and just thinking this is real. You’d forget this was an English comments section, how is a country known for sarcasm as its defining humour not getting it?"

  Who exactly are Hashtag?

Consequently, Pep may want to bring in a little more experience at the back, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging as a major target, and there is also interest in a new right-back, who Lijnders knows very well…

Indeed, according to a report from Caught Offside, Man City could make a sensational bid to sign Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window, with the former Liverpool man not exactly making a flying start to life in La Liga.

Dani Carvajal has managed to force his way back into Xabi Alonso’s side, which has led to doubts over Trent’s future, and City are monitoring the situation, having already contacted the right-back over a potential move to the Etihad Stadium earlier this summer.

The 26-year-old, who is reported to earn a base salary of around £276k-a-week at Real Madrid, has only made seven appearances for Real Madrid so far, but City are now in the picture for a shock move, with Guardiola in need of a long-term Kyle Walker replacement.

Trent would be "insane" signing for Man City

Given the recent history between Man City and Liverpool, the full-back linking up with Guardiola doesn’t seem like the most plausible of scenarios, although he has praised the atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium in the past.

The England international said: “People talk about City’s atmosphere and you know, hand on heart when we play them, the atmosphere is incredible, like we feel it. It’s intense.”

Lauded as “insane” by former footballer George Chomakov, the ex-Liverpool star has established himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in the world, while also impressing from a defensive point of view on occasion over the past year.

That said, even though Trent seemingly burned his bridges with Liverpool by leaving in the summer, a move to Man City seems relatively far-fetched, especially considering he is still in the very early stages of his Real Madrid career.

Manchester United are now seriously considering a late move for a “wonderful” midfielder, ahead of the September 1st transfer deadline.

Man Utd looking to strengthen midfield amid Mainoo uncertainty

Kobbie Mainoo is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League this season, but Ruben Amorim has recently insisted he is a big fan of the midfielder, saying: “I believe a lot in Kobbie; more than what everyone thinks. I believe a lot in Kobbie. I expect a lot from him. He is playing in one position and is fighting with Bruno. They can play together.

“We need to improve that position and you could see that against Fulham. I just expect the best from Kobbie in the same way as everybody.”

Mainoo was given the opportunity to prove himself against Grimsby Town on Wednesday night, and the 20-year-old was one of the only players to put in something resembling a decent performance.

However, there is now a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the youngster’s future, with Leeds United now showing the strongest interest in a deal for the central midfielder, who is open to leaving Old Trafford before the September 1st deadline.

As such, according to a report from Spain, INEOS may not be done in the transfer market, with a move for VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller being seriously considered.

Chiefs have some reservations about the signing of Stiller, and he is not viewed as an alternative to Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, with a move dependent on what happens with Bruno Fernandes and Mainoo.
