Afghanistan bundle out Ireland for 79 to seal series

A second consecutive fifty from Hazratullah Zazai helped the visitors mirror their total of 160 from the first match, before Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan broke the back of Ireland’s chase to script a seventh straight T20I win for Afghanistan over them. The win by 81 runs equalled Afghanistan’s second-largest victory margin in the format, and rendered the final T20I of the series a dead rubber. It also meant Ireland were shot out for their fourth-lowest T20I total: 79.For a while it looked like a change in team and strategy would bring about a change in Ireland’s fortunes, when they stifled the run-flow and snaffled early wickets in the Powerplay. That is, until Zazai awoke from a stupor and muscled his way to a 54-ball 82. There was quite a similarity in the way the two teams started off with the bat – finding themselves 8 for 2 – but what separated them was Zazai’s sustained power-hitting and Afghanistan’s bowling depth. The inclusion of the experienced Boyd Rankin, who had recovered from a back niggle, and the introduction of spin in the Powerplay propped up Ireland early on. Rankin’s penchant for generating disconcerting bounce kept the dangerous Zazai in check in the first over, after Afghanistan had chosen to bat. Offspinner Simi Singh followed this up with the wicket of Mohammad Shahzad, who attempted an awkward pull to one that hurried on to him only to be caught at short third-man. Samiullah Shenwari followed soon after, caught on the square-leg boundary off a Peter Chase short ball that held up in the pitch.Overall the Irish pacers used the short ball effectively during the Powerplay and reaped rewards, as the run rate hovered around seven. However, having stabilised the innings considerably, Zazai and captain Asghar Afghan found an opening and they battered their way in, taking 19 off the 10th over bowler by the 18-year-old left-arm pacer Joshua Little. Then Zazai tore into Paul Stirling’s part-time spin, depositing him into the stands three times in four balls. The first of those three sixes brought up Zazai’s fifty off 34 balls.George Dockrell halted his charge in an excellent 16th over rife with full, wide deliveries which, Zazai’s wicket apart, produced three consecutive dots and just two singles. Much like the previous T20I, Afghanistan did not take full toll of the final five overs, but a few lusty blows from Mohammad Nabi (12) and an unbeaten 20 from Najibullah Zadran helped them to 160 for 8.Any hopes Ireland had of chasing the target were quelled quickly. Like falling through a series of trapdoors, they lost wickets in clumps.Aftab Alam set the collapse in motion, with the wicket of Stirling for a scratchy five-ball 2 before the spinners took over, taking eight wickets between them. Mujeeb accounted for Stuart Thompson, Andy Balbirnie and later Dockrell. Rashid made the most decisive inroad, getting William Porterfield – the only batsman to show a semblance of resistance – for a 23-ball 33. However, the wicket was rendered possible primarily by Alam’s brilliance in the field, with him intercepting Porterfield’s airborne reverse sweep at short third-man.It was the kind of moment that could deflate even better-placed opposition. Ireland, trying as they were to recover from 9 for 3, found themselves 46 for 4 in the ninth with that wicket, and they subsided quickly thereafter, bowled out in 15 overs.

Western Australia captain Ashton Turner guided his side home to an opening win in the domestic limited-overs tournament, after a disciplined bowling display restricted New South Wales at the WACA Ground. The Blues, who lost their captain Peter Nevill for the entire competition due to a broken thumb on match eve, had the benefit of winning the toss, but could never get momentum going against the Warriors.Joel Paris struck a key early blow to dismiss Ryan Gibson with the new, swinging ball, before Jhye Richardson broke a key middle-order partnership between Nick Larkin and Jack Edwards, and then followed up with a swift away swinger to dismiss the still jet-lagged Jay Lenton.Daniel Sams then defied his inability to win a state contract by husbanding the resources of the lower order to take NSW beyond 200, despite their dismissal with plenty of their allotment remaining. On a pitch with some assistance for the seamers, early WA wickets were likely. This was borne out by the early exits of Josh Inglis and the injury replacement Sam Whiteman at the expense of well-directed deliveries from Sams. Josh Phillipe and the sometime Test-allrounder Hilton Cartwright steadied the innings before their wickets gave the Blues a chance. However, Turner and Ashton Agar, a curious selection for the Australian team to go to the UAE to face Pakistan, established a match-sealing partnership to make the game safe. Turner stayed at the crease to ensure the win, with Cameron Green at his side.

Spurs could sign £100m "superstar" who Son would love

After a decade-long relationship, Tottenham Hotspur and Harry Kane decided to part ways, with the England captain moving to German champions Bayern Munich for £100m in the summer.

The loss of the club's record goalscorer hadn't really taken its toll on the squad after a high-flying start to the season under Ange Postecoglou. However, following recent injuries to key players such as Richarlison and James Maddison, Spurs are starting to feel the hangover from Kane's departure.

Now, Postecoglou has set his sights on finally replacing Kane, although Tottenham's new head coach certainly has an expensive palate.

Evan Ferguson to Tottenham links

According to talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have turned their attention to Brighton and Hove Albion's 19-year-old star Evan Ferguson, with the Europa League club slapping a £100m price tag on the Republic of Ireland centre-forward.

Ferguson penned a new six-year deal last week, keeping him at the Amex Stadium until 2029, amid interest from suitors in the Premier League, which has undoubtedly added value to Brighton's asking price.

Additionally, talkSPORT are claiming that no release clause has been inserted into Ferguson's contract, allowing the Seagulls to dictate his market value when clubs enquire about signing the youngster.

Ferguson has been making waves on the south coast and has already scored 15 professional goals in 43 appearances for Brighton since making his debut for the first team two seasons ago, including a hat-trick against Newcastle United at the beginning of the current campaign. The Irishman recently became the first player in the Premier League to score ten goals in a calendar year since Wayne Rooney.

England icon Gary Lineker believes there is even a "hint of [Erling] Haaland" in his style of play. Meanwhile, former Liverpool striker Danny Murphy has called Ferguson a "superstar". Promising signs indeed for Spurs.

Why Heung-min Son would love Evan Ferguson

This season alone, Ferguson has found the net five times under Roberto De Zerbi in 11 league appearances, although the young striker has yet to convert any opportunities in three games in Europe. Nevertheless, Spurs' main number '9' Richarlison has scored just two goals this season in 11 matches in all competitions, the same number as centre-back Cristian Romero.

The primary source of goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season has been club captain Heung-min Son, having bagged eight goals in 13 matches with a conversation rate of 36%, according to the BBC.

While Richarlison has already scored double his tally from last season, his contribution is nowhere near enough to replace Kane's 32 goals from the previous campaign and the South Korean has an enormous goal-scoring burden as a result.

Ferguson is the man to help him in that regard. Compared to Spurs' Brazilian forward, he has been holding his own amongst some of the best centre-forwards in Europe's top five leagues. As per FBref's data, the Ireland international is in the top 3% for passes completed per 90, the top 14% for non-penalty goals per 90, the top 19% for goals per 90, the top 9% for shots on target per 90 and the top 5% for outperforming his xG.

The Irishman's displays in a blue and white shirt have led highly-rated manager De Zerbi to label his star striker as "incredible". The teenager is boasting 0.77 goals per 90 this season in the Premier League while Richarlison has managed merely 0.17 goals per 90. Additionally, the Brazilian is registering 0.46 expected goals per 90 which is actually higher than Ferguson's 0.42.

Son has been Spurs' most potent player this season but Ange needs a frontman who can contribute more to the team than Richarlison and, while pricey, Ferguson may just be what the doctor ordered in terms of relieving that burden from their captain's shoulders.

Having been described as "Harry Kane-esque" by Jamie O'Hara, a man Son shared quite the relationship with, it's safe to say he'd love another similar player next to him.

Aston Villa leading race to sign "smart", "sublime" star ahead of Man Utd

Aston Villa are quickly becoming one of the most entertaining sides to watch in the Premier League under Unai Emery, with the Villans building on their good start to leave them one point adrift of the Champions League places. And, whilst it's still early days, the current campaign has so far shown that, on their day, Villa could cause plenty of shocks this season, both in the Europa Conference League and England's top flight.

Things could get even better in the January transfer window, too. Never has a move to Villa Park seemed like such an attractive prospect, which could see one exciting target welcomed to the Midlands club.

Aston Villa transfer news

Aston Villa proved just how much they've improved off the pitch during the summer transfer window, as they managed to bring in the likes of Moussa Diaby and Nicolo Zaniolo, who have both got off to blistering starts in English football. It may now just be a case of Emery adding some finishing touches to his squad and avoiding any major exit – if Villa can keep the current squad together, then they could reach unprecedented heights in the Premier League, especially if they welcome extra stars on top of that.

The latest Nahuel Molina transfer news suggests that he could be one of the names coming in at Villa Park too. According to reports in Spain, the Midlands club are leading the race ahead of Manchester United to sign the Atletico Madrid full-back in January, whose current release clause is just €30m (£26m).

If Villa are to make their move, they'll need to get in fast if they want to match that lower release clause, with reports suggesting that Atletico Madrid want to renew Molina's contract, moving his exit clause to €90m (£78m) in the process.

Nahuel Molina is a "sublime" full-back

Starting in five of Atletico Madrid's nine La Liga games so far this season, after missing out on a start in the first two games through injury, Molina plays an important role under Diego Simeone, operating mainly as a right-back or right wing-back.

Molina's stats show that he could be the perfect back-up option or even competition for Matty Cash, too. Here's how he compares to both Cash and Lucas Digne so far this season, as per FBref.

During his time in Spain, Molina has earned plenty of praise, including from Marca's Pascal Ruiz Arnal, who posted on X: "From Atlético to Celta 0-3, being a wonderful play, I look at Nahuel Molina. He puts the ball back to the perfect spot instead of hitting it inside the six-yard box. Those things show when a player is smart. Morata's thing, sublime."

With that said, when the January transfer window does open, Villa will be one to watch in the Premier League, as they decide whether or not to continue their pursuit of another World Cup winner in the form of Molina.

Spent best part of 12 months on the sidelinesImpressed for club & country since returnGame time will be carefully managedWHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international is looking to make up for lost time after spending the best part of 12 months stuck on the sidelines. He was handed an international recall for the CONCACAF Nations League finals, and scored a stunning goal when helping his country to another continental crown.

Adams also caught the eye when playing the full 90 minutes for Bournemouth in their battling 2-1 win over Everton in the Premier League, suggesting that the 25-year-old midfielder is back to full match sharpness. He will be hoping to figure prominently again when the Cherries face Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

WHAT IRAOLA SAID ABOUT ADAMS

Two games in the space of four days may be too big an ask of the American star, though, with boss Andoni Iraola telling reporters when asked if Adams is ready for that kind of workload: “It is demanding. But I'm sure I'm going to ask him and he will say ‘I’m good to go again'. Then we have to take the decision. Not my decision, not his decision, there is a medical team. There are more coaches involved. And we will see also the tactics we need. Against Everton I decided to play him so many minutes because it was a kind of a good game for him. I think we needed what he gives us for this game and we'll see what we decide against Palace.”

No communication with management in England, says Karun Nair

Middle-order batsman Karun Nair hasn’t had “any conversations” with the India selectors and team management about why he didn’t play in any of the five Tests in England. Nair was part of India’s original 18-man squad for the Tests in England, but watched Hanuma Vihari, who was called up as a replacement during the series, leapfrog him and make a debut in the fifth Test at The Oval.On Saturday, Nair was left out of India’s Test squad for the home series against West Indies in October. Before that squad was named, Nair, in an interview with , said of the situation in England: “We [Nair, the selectors and the team management] haven’t had any conversations. Nothing at all. It is difficult, but I haven’t gone forth and asked anything, but yeah, we haven’t had any conversation.”Nair largely spent his time in England working with the team’s fitness trainer, who, according to Nair, commended him for his fitness levels. “I’ve been spending a lot of time with [Shanker] Basu sir, our trainer, and Sanjay Bangar sir as well, our batting coach,” he said. “Obviously a lot of throwdowns and a lot of net sessions. But mainly I have been spending time with Basu sir. According to him, I am the fittest person in the team right now. I am very proud of that and I just want to keep improving on that.”Nair, who has played six Tests, became India’s second triple-centurion – after Virender Sehwag – when he scored an unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai in December 2016. Since then, he has played only three more Tests and none since March 2017. Those three Tests were in the home series against Australia, and Nair had a high score of 26 in four innings. Before the series against Australia, he did not make the playing XI in the one-off home Test against Bangladesh, and after Australia he was dropped for the home and away series against Sri Lanka, and the Tests in South Africa. He returned to the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, but not the XI. In July, he travelled with India A to England, where he made two fifties in six first-class innings against England Lions and West Indies A, with a top score of 93. That was followed by the England Tests, where Vihari played ahead of him.”It is difficult, naturally for a human being, it’s difficult to handle that situation, or to take that as a human being,” Nair said. “But the team management and everyone else involved make a decision, and me as a player has to accept it. There’s nothing else I can do. Whenever I get an opportunity, I will let the bat do the talking. I can’t be saying anything else on that.”Nair is currently captaining the Indian Board President’s XI against the touring West Indians in Vadodara. In the first innings of that two-day game, Nair was out to Shannon Gabriel for 29.

54 goals & 49 assists: Chelsea have never replaced the "magician" they sold in 2014

Chelsea's reckless decision-making at the top often leaves supporters pulling their hair out and this is particularly poignant in their transfer dealings.

Given their size and stature as a footballing powerhouse, the Blues are unsurprisingly able to attract some of the world's biggest talent, yet one notable issue has been their decision to let go a number of other high-profile talents.

The list of world-class stars that the club have let depart over the years is endless, letting go of Declan Rice as a youngster, Kevin De Bruyne in 2014 and Mohamed Salah in 2015.

What's more alarming is the fact that Chelsea have also sold quality talent to their rivals without thinking of the consequences and strengthening them in the process.

Juan Mata is the prime example of this ineptness coming into fruition with the Blues having sold him to Manchester United in 2014.

Prior to sanctioning this ludicrous transfer, the Spaniard was one of the best attacking midfielders in the league and rose to prominence at Stamford Bridge as an assist machine.

The price Chelsea paid for Juan Mata

Mata rose to prominence as a midfield metronome at Valencia in 2008 and his playmaking abilities, in particular, propelled him close to the level of sensational midfield duo, Xavi Hernandez and Andreas Iniesta, who were forming one of the greatest partnerships to grace European football at Barcelona.

During the 2008/09 campaign which saw Barcelona dominate world football, Mata's domineering performances in La Liga set Spain alight. In 37 appearances, the fleet-footed attacking midfielder supplied an eye-watering 11 goals and 17 assists.

Ultimately, the Spaniard's exceptional abilities as the ideal modern playmaker earned him a £23.5m move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2011 after posting 98 goals in 174 matches for Valencia.

Juan-Mata

The diminutive and fleet-footed attacking midfielder was already on his way to becoming one of the best talents in world football, but after an outstanding debut season in England – which saw him contribute a remarkable 12 goals and 20 assists in all competitions, lift the Champions League, FA Cup and earn a nomination for the PFA Player of the Year award – Mata was on top of the world.

That exceptional individual campaign was somehow exceeded in the following year as the 5 foot 7 wizard conjured up more magic to help Chelsea lift the Europa League whilst recording a staggering 54 goal contributions in 64 matches, including the most assists in one season since the 2000/01 campaign (34).

Juan Mata's seasons at Chelsea

(G/A)

2013/14

(0 goals, 2 assists)

2012/13

(20 goals, 34 assists)

2011/12

(12 goals, 20 assists)

Mata reached the pinnacle of world football at Chelsea, smashing several records, lifting a whole host of trophies and was the future of the Spanish national team, but that didn't stop Jose Mourinho from selling him to rivals United for £37.1m in January 2014, with the Portuguese later revealing the reason why a deal was sanctioned.

He told the Telegraph [via the Daily Express] in October 2014: "in the modern football and the new economic reality [for Chelsea], if Man Utd pays you an important amount of money he has to go.

"It is my club's vision. It's my boss, Mr Abramovich, the board. And I share it."

Juan Mata's time at Manchester United

Mata was signed for the Red Devils in a time of transition and was brought into the club by David Moyes, who described him as "one of the finest playmakers in the game today".

A real coup for the club at the time, the acquisition of the 25-year-old promised to deliver United endless amounts of success – after all, they were still used to being a trophy-winning machine under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mata arrived at the club having won back-to-back Player of the Year awards with his previous employers, as one of the finest creators to grace the competition having supplied more assists in his time at Chelsea (57) than he managed in the rest of his decade-long stint in English football.

Juan Mata of Manchester United last season.

However, the "magician", as described by Michael Carrick, was denied legendary status in the Premier League through Red Devil mismanagement and ill-thought-out strategy.

He fell victim to the toxic rift at the club that was created after Ferguson departed, clinging onto the obsession of maintaining a style of football they’ve never got close to matching.

Unfortunately, after departing Chelsea, Mata never reached the ceiling of this potential – and that wasn't down to the individual himself – it was the constant chopping and changing of managers, wasting millions on talent and playing without a recognised style that prevented the Spaniard from replicating his sensational Chelsea form.

He would go on to make 285 appearances for the club in eight and a half years, returning a respectable 51 goals and 47 assists, departing for Galatasary in 2022 – for whom he provided a further three goals and two assists – while now plying his trade in the J-1 League with Vissel Kobe.

When looking back on his career, supporters are left to imagine what the World Cup-winning, Champions League-lifting and assist-making machine could have achieved if he hadn't been held back by the toxicity that broke out in the post-Ferguson era at Old Trafford.

As for the Blues, it is hard argue that they ever truly replaced the Spaniard in that number ten berth, with even Eden Hazard's best season for the club – in which he registered 37 goals and assists in 2012/13 – not coming close to Mata's heroics in that same campaign.
