There is still work to be done by the Red Dragons in a bid to secure a top-three finish in League Two. They have three games left to take in this season and could see a step up onto the third rung of the English Football League ladder confirmed at the end of a home date with Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

Until that step up is made, everyone at SToK Racecourse is eager to avoid any distractions. That means thoughts of who and what may be required in order to be competitive in League One are being put on hold for now.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Phil Parkinson has said when asked about recruitment plans: “At the moment, for myself, the focus is purely on these last few games and I'm not letting my mind drift to anything else. We need to put all our energy into preparations. If we were able to get over the line and get promotion, we've got a long time to plan and build the squad strong for next year whatever division we're in.”

Bruno Lage signing is enduring a nightmare loan away from Wolves

In 2016, Wolverhampton Wanderers began working with football superagent Jorge Mendes to boost the profile of players coming through the door at Molineux. This partnership worked wonders as the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio and Matheus Nunes all came to the club within the space of five years.

However, not all transfer plans can be fool-proof. While the likes of Neves and Moutinho went on to become legends at the Midlands club, Wolves did sign some duds for massive money which was facilitated by Mendes.

One of these failed signings is still on the books at Wolves, albeit on loan, but has had a turgid spell away from the club.

How much Wolves signed Goncalo Guedes for

After spending his entire youth career with Portuguese giants Benfica, Goncalo Guedes eventually made the leap to Paris Saint-Germain, joining for £25m after the French side reportedly battled it out with Manchester United for the "new Ronaldo". Nevertheless, after just a handful of matches at the Parc des Princes, the winger made the switch to Valencia for £35m.

It was at Valencia where Guedes played his best football, scoring 36 goals and recording 30 assists in 178 appearances in all competitions for Los Ches, while helping the side to Copa del Rey glory in 2019 which is still the club's first and only title in 15 years. The Portugal international's form eventually piqued the interest of Wolves, who acquired his signature eighteen months ago for £27.5m.

Unfortunately, Guedes' time at Molineux was less than impressive. The attacker featured just 18 times in all competitions for the Wanderers, including 12 in the Premier League and lasted just half a season at the club before joining Benfica on loan last January, winning the Primeira Liga in the process.

Guedes returned to the champions of Portugal this summer on loan but his second temporary spell hasn't been as successful the second time around.

Guedes' stats this season

Upon signing for the club, chairman Jeff Shi called Guedes a "high quality" player but admitted that the English side had to scrap it out with a number of different suitors right up until the last minute to secure his services.

Nevertheless, Guedes' move coincided with what was a topsy-turvy season for the Midlands club. Bruno Lage, who brought the wide-man to the club, was sacked by October and eventually replaced with former Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui, while the pressure of being Wolves' fourth-most expensive player of all time also lingered above the player.

Throughout his half-season with Wolves, Guedes scored just two goals, one against Brighton and Hove Albion in a 3-2 league defeat and one in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the FA Cup. Still, the 26-year-old proved to be more prolific last term and actually outperformed his teammates in a number of key metrics in comparison to the previous season.

There's no question that Guedes underperformed last season considering how much money Wolves spent to bring him to Molineux. However, the Portuguese attacker also came during a turbulent campaign for the club, with the threat of relegation looming overhead.

Goncalo Guedes for Wolves

Guedes has failed to register a single goal or assist since moving back to Benfica on loan and has played just six games and 61 minutes overall. Furthermore, the player is yet to receive more than 45 minutes worth of game-time in Lisbon during a match, having totalled merely 160 minutes on the pitch.

Even Guedes' ability to play on the left, the right and up top has proved unable to offer him more game-time for Benfica this season.

Perhaps Wolves could look to recall their expensive winger when the January transfer window opens and offer him one more chance to prove himself in an orange shirt.

Newcastle seeking "unbelievable" £58m signing to upgrade on Dan Burn

Newcastle United's ongoing injury crisis is a sign that the club didn't strengthen enough in the summer.

Considering the Magpies were gearing up for their first Champions League campaign in two decades, only recruiting five new players has proven to be their downfall.

Aside from being six points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, Eddie Howe's side are bottom of their Champions League group following consecutive defeats against Borussia Dortmund.

Whilst they can still salvage their campaign and reach the knockout stages, it is a difficult task and the Toon desperately need the January window to rectify a squad that has been decimated by injuries.

With Sven Botman, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar all sidelined, recruiting a new centre-back is a priority and Ousmane Diomande is top of their list of targets.

Newcastle transfer news – Ousmane Diomande

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle could test Sporting Lisbon's resolve by launching a £58m bid for their highly rated centre-back.

After setting a £70m release clause in his contract, Sporting are unlikely to budge on their valuation of the player, but the Magpies could test the waters with an initial bid.

His rise, like his valuation, has been rapid but Newcastle have shown they are prepared to leave the room if agents or clubs demand crazy money.

Considered the most promising African prospect playing in Europe, Diomande is a sought-after commodity and has several clubs chasing him, including divisional rivals Chelsea and Arsenal.

With a bidding war for the 19-year-old likely to ensue, either in January or next summer, sporting director Dan Ashworth will need to work more magic for the Toon to drive him towards St James' Park.

It is clear that Newcastle – like most clubs – are planning for the long-term with their transfers and having risen to stardom for the Portuguese giants this term, Diomande would be a huge upgrade on current defender, Burn.

The stats that show Diomande would be an upgrade on Burn

When Newcastle are blessed with a fully fit squad, Burn has been Howe's first-choice left-back, featuring in that position on 14 occasions this season after establishing himself as a key figure in the squad.

The 31-year-old, who arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2022, has transformed into a cult hero since joining, however, he could become surplus to requirements if the Magpies are to become regular European challengers.

lewis-hall-dan-burn-newcastle-opinion-premier-league

With Newcastle shifting towards a more possession-based style this term, Howe is looking to add a ball-playing centre-back to challenge the likes of Schar and Botman.

Described as "immense" by journalist Antonio Mango with the ball at his feet, Diomande could be the perfect candidate for the job, having showcased his elegance and calmness in possession at Sporting.

By contrast, Burn's 6 foot 6 frame means he never looks comfortable with the ball at his feet and he's showcased his struggles as a ball-playing defender this term.

Despite operating predominantly as a left-back with the license to push forward, Burn doesn't come close to eclipsing the ability that Diomande has with the ball at his feet.

As delineated by the table above, the "unbelievable" youngster, as dubbed by Mango, beats the Englishman in every possession-based and ball-carrying statistic, including progressive passes, successful take-ons and carries into the final third.

With this in mind, Howe needs to plan for the future by ruthlessly ditching Burn for the Ivory Coast international.

He added: "How he interacts with the other boys, how he took the South American outfield player department under his wings naturally without telling them what to do, but just how they came together. It's wonderful… I loved it from the first moment when we met before we signed him, or when I met his dad. The football understanding in his family is obviously second to none – dad a former professional, uncle former professional, brothers professionals, cousins professionals, so they all eat and breathe football and that's so good. WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

The Merseyside club will be next seen in action on Sunday in the Premier League as they are set to face rivals Manchester United in an important league fixture.

Tottenham board "will now consider" selling star with "huge money on offer"

The Tottenham hierarchy could now sell one star with big cash on offer in January, as they perform a U-turn behind-the-scenes.

Spurs players who could leave in 2024

Manager Ange Postecoglou has had to deal with a plethora of injury and suspension problems since tasting their first Premier League defeat of the season around this time last month.

In the wake of Spurs' 4-1 loss to Chelsea at the start of November, they lost both James Maddison and Micky van de Ven to long-term injuries, with the likes of Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic, Rodrigo Bentancur and Eric Dier also unavailable right now.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 8, 2023

The Lilywhites, in stark contrast to their early-season fortunes, are without a win since late October – losing four of their last five matches in the top flight.

A real factor in Tottenham's downward spiral has been the absences of key men, yet despite their limited numbers, there are certain squad members who could depart in January.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg may be allowed to leave Spurs permanently, according to reports, while there are also rumours that Dier could make a surprise move to Bayern Munich.

Eric Dier for Tottenham

Sky Sports claim Hugo Lloris, who is yet to play a single minute this term, will be free to go. Richarlison, meanwhile, has been subject to intense interest from clubs in the Middle East.

Tottenham board "will consider" Richarlison sale

Previously, Spurs were unwilling to entertain approaches for the Brazilian from Saudi Arabia, but according to Football Insider, that's now changed.

It's believed the Tottenham board "will now consider selling" Richarlison with "huge money on offer" from Saudi Arabia. The Spurs hierarchy have begun to lose patience with the 26-year-old, who they signed for around £60 million from Everton last year.

brennan-johnson-richarlison-tottenham-opinion

Club chiefs believe the potential fee for Richarlison can be used to bolster Postecoglou's transfer kitty for the winter window and sign much-needed additions of their own.

As a result, the north Londoners have performed what is seen as a "U-turn" over his future, after they were once ready to reject all bids for the forward.

A well-placed source told Football Insider that Richarlison's transfer to Spurs just "hasn't worked out for all parties".

Richarlison's form for Spurs this season

The South American is now being eased back into the fold by Postecoglou after recovering from pubic bone surgery.

Over his 12 league outings this term, Richarlison has a goal and three assists to his name, with his finest moments arguably coming in Spurs' 2-1 win over Sheffield United earlier this season.

The ex-Watford star grabbed a goal and assist in the dying minutes to win Spurs the game and secure a dramatic comeback, with Postecoglou then praising Richarlison in a press conference.

“We’ve got to maintain a balance in life and even for him," said Postecoglou on Richarlison (via TEAMtalk).

"He needs to understand his football is still good, he’s a fantastic footballer, he’s got so much to give and that can help ease the burden he’s feeling in other parts of his life, like so many of us.

“I’m really pleased for him – I thought he did really well. We were obviously chasing a goal and getting some balls in the box and he’s always a threat in the air.”

Troy Deeney hails Tom Brady and Birmingham board's plan to demolish St Andrews… regardless of potential relegation

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

St Andrew's holds a treasured place in the memories of fans, steeped in decades of footballing history and emotion. However, the decision to demolish the venerable stadium is part of a larger vision aimed at revitalising the club's infrastructure and securing its future in the upper echelons of English football.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Under the ambitious plans spearheaded by Knighthead, a staggering £2 billion investment is set to transform the landscape of Birmingham's football scene. The proposed state-of-the-art stadium, boasting a capacity of up to 60,000 spectators, is poised to rival the likes of the illustrious Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, marking a significant leap forward for Birmingham City FC.

  • WHAT DEENEY SAID

In his column for Deeney wrote: "I’m very nervous that the club I supported, and then captained for two seasons until last summer, are going to be relegated to League One this season. But the fact that the club’s American owners, Knighthead, are determined to go ahead with a new stadium whatever happens on the pitch, proves they will drag Blues into the 21st Century. At times like this, with the Blues next to bottom in the Championship and in a desperate relegation battle, hope for the future is crucial.

"The owners are talking about a £2B investment and intend to hold NFL matches and concerts at the new ground, along the lines of the impressive Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It will be the sort of stadium where Blues fan Jude Bellingham might want to return later in his career. More importantly, if a new Jude Bellingham comes along, he might not be in a hurry to leave. The scale of the planned redevelopment of the Bordesley Park area is similar to what Manchester City have achieved with the Etihad campus. Blues chief executive Garry Cook was at City in the early years after the Abu Dhabi takeover, so he knows what he is doing. I love the ambition of chairman Tom Wagner — even if his plans mean the end for St Andrew’s."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Deeney's nervousness is palpable as Birmingham find themselves in the 23rd position in the Championship table with just 42 points from an equal number of games. They have won just once in their last five league games and remain desperate for points at the business end of the season. However, they are just a point away from safety and a spike in performance in the final lap could help them reach the shores.

Middlesbrough eyeing move to sign "aggressive" player from promotion rivals

Vying for a place in the Championship's top six once again, Middlesbrough have struggled at times under Michael Carrick this season, who has felt the full force of life without Chuba Akpom. Those at the Riverside Stadium have at least turned around their early season form, however, which saw them plummet to potential relegation trouble, and are now just three points adrift of the all-important play-offs.

If they are to secure their shot at Wembley though, then Boro may well need to turn their attention towards the January transfer window sooner rather than later. And that could see them pursue the signature of one particular defender, who is out-of-favour at Boro's promotion rivals.

Middlesbrough transfer news

Replacing Akpom's goals was always going to be a near-impossible task for Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window, given that he found the back of the net a stunning 28 times last season. Carrick is yet to find a solution to life without his star striker too, which has seen his side remain on course to finish outside of the top six. But goals haven't been Boro's biggest problem this season. Instead, their issues have come at the other end and that could see them welcome a rival defender in January.

According to The Sunderland Echo, Middlesbrough are keen on signing Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell, who has started just one Championship game this season. The 21-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Millwall last season, where he came within touching distance of securing a place in the play-offs. Despite that Championship experience, however, the defender is yet to be handed regular starting opportunities by Daniel Farke at Elland Road and could benefit from a move elsewhere.

"No way" – Paul Robinson reacts after hearing who could leave Leeds

The Whites could be left short in that area if he leaves.

ByCharlie Smith Dec 2, 2023

It remains to be seen whether Boro decide to push ahead to sign Cresswell, but he certainly ticks the right boxes for Carrick. The Englishman is young, experienced at his side's current level and only likely to improve with more minutes.

"Aggressive" Cresswell needs minutes

As a young player, Cresswell needs minutes if he is to reach his potential. He got exactly that at Millwall last season and impressed former manager Gary Rowett as a result. Rowett told the South London Press:

"Knowing his dad and the character he had, you can see that in the lad as well. He’s been brought up really well with a real hunger for work-rate. He’s an aggressive boy who wants to fight, I think that’s why Millwall was something they were very, very keen on even though they had some very good other options.

charlie-cresswell-manager-live-updates-leeds-united-patrick-vieira-academy-guehi

“A loan player wants to know they’ll get a fair chance and what you’re offering is actually what it says on the tin – not just to try and get the player into our club. He’s not going to be our player at the end of it, he’s going to be Leeds’ player, so we’ve got to do the best job we can along the way.”

Given Middlesbrough's goals conceded record in the Championship this season of 29, which is worse than all but two sides above them, Carrick could certainly do with the defensive boost that Cresswell could provide.
