'Now England really are in a pickle!' – How Ireland pooped the World Cup party

England were routed on the first morning of Ireland’s maiden Test at Lord’s. Here’s how ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary saw it

Andrew Miller and Alan Gardner24-Jul-2019Ireland’s first morning of Test cricket at Lord’s was beyond their wildest dreams, as Tim Murtagh led a sensational assault on an England team containing five members of the squad that won the World Cup on this very ground last week. Here’s how ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary charted a spectacular collapse … even by the Test team’s recent standards.2.4 Murtagh to Roy, OUT, edged, and gone! Murtagh makes it happen! Nipping half-a-bat’s width down the slope, snicking the edge, and scooped up by Stirling at first slip, more in his wrists than his palms, so low to the ground, but Roy isn’t disputing it! First blood to Ireland!
JJ Roy c Stirling b Murtagh 5 (8 for 1)9.5 Adair to Denly, OUT, full, straight, gone! Denly departs as well, and England’s top-order woes are officially still woeful! Adair finds a fractionally fuller length, lovely shape back into the pads on a tight line, and he doesn’t bother with the review. Well, well! This is working out nicely for the new boys!
JL Denly lbw b Adair 23 (36 for 2)10.4 Murtagh to Burns, OUT, driven once more, edged once more, caught once more! This is brilliant from Ireland, loose and irresponsible from England. The ball was once again in the channel on off stump, and lured the wrong stroke at the wrong time! Now England really are in a pickle
RJ Burns c Wilson b Murtagh 6 (36 for 3)11.6 Adair to Root, OUT, huge appeal again! So, so, so straight! The only thing that could save Root is an inside-edge! A long discussion and Porterfield calls for the review… Nope, no bat there! This is surely out! A yelp of delight from the Ireland fielders as they see that… and with good reason, as that is smashing the stumps!
JE Root lbw b Adair 2 (42 for 4)

12.4 Murtagh to Bairstow, OUT, a loose flat-footed swat, and Bairstow’s timbers are wrecked! Yet another irresponsible stroke, the ball was straight and true, the shot was wild and woolly. And Bairstow’s off-side fluency in ODIs once again translates to a bowled in Tests …
JM Bairstow b Murtagh 0 (42 for 5)12.6 Murtagh to Woakes, OUT, nips off the seam, into the pad, and up goes the finger! My God! Woakes reviews, it’s possible it was high and certainly leg-sided, but it was tight to the stumps … and no bat to save him… and clipping the top of leg stump!
CR Woakes lbw b Murtagh 0 (42 for 6)14.2 Murtagh to Ali, OUT, nicked off, FIVE for Murtagh! Perfect line and that’s too good for Moeen, who feathers through to Wilson, and the green tide surges again! That’s Murtagh’s 14th first-class five-for at Lord’s – but the first to get him on the honours board! Just slipped across the bows, hits the seam and grazes the bat through to the keeper – Lord’s catnip from the Middlesex man
MM Ali c Wilson b Murtagh 0 (43 for 7)18.4 Rankin to Broad, OUT, round the wicket, back of a length and beats the bat, Wilson leaping to his right to snag the catch… Ireland are very keen on this and review Aleem Dar’s not-out decision. There must have been a noise, because UltraEdge likes it too! A smidge of a spike and Ireland have their eighth! Another good use of the review system and Broad is off… England could be bowled out before lunch, here!
SCJ Broad c Wilson b Rankin 3 (58 for 8)20.1 Rankin to Curran, OUT, gone, poked to short leg! Perfectly placed, straight into McCollum’s bread-basket! Curran won’t be hurting Ireland today, just tucked off his legs but in the vicinity of the catcher and he snapped up a low chance – everything going for Ireland here!
SM Curran c McCollum b Rankin 18 (67 for 9)23.4 Adair to Stone, OUT, and that’s yer lot! Bowled off the elbow, seaming back and then deflecting down into the timbers to complete an Irish rout at England’s HQ! Adair gets his third, Stone’s fun is over and England have had their World Cup party well and truly pooped!
OP Stone b Adair 19 (85 all out)

Katherine Brunt seeking revenge when England face Australia for the women's Ashes

Why England quick is “desperate” for another Ashes triumph before she retires

Katherine Brunt is desperate to finish her career with another Ashes series victory. That’s not to say the England quick – who turns 34 on Tuesday, the opening day of the series – will retire immediately if her side manage to win the Ashes back from Australia over the course of the next month.”They keep finding ways to pull me back and patch me up,” Brunt said, her groan wrapped up in a laugh.”I’d love to be part of another Ashes-winning England side again and that would be a lovely little thing to finish on, I guess. But with the World T20 [in 2020], that’s definitely not something I’m going to say no to.”ALSO READ: How Amy Jones turned potential into performanceBrunt was part of the side which won the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup in England in 2009, taking 3 for 6 in the final against New Zealand. She is a veteran of seven Ashes series, starting with England’s first series win for 42 years in 2005, and missing only the 2007-08 edition while she recovered from surgery to deal with a back condition which she still has to manage carefully. Having been part of the England side which lost the Ashes in 2015 and saw Australia retain them through the drawn 2017-18 series, Brunt would love nothing more than to win them back.”I’m desperate for an Ashes win,” Brunt told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s the most important thing there is to me. I love the World Cup, world tournaments, any series between us and Australia, but the Ashes for me is just the pinnacle.”For some reason it’s got the most amount of emotion in it. You go through so much. Normal games you go through nerves and anxiety and excitement, things like that, but with an Ashes series you have all that and then you have all the extra emotion like, I don’t know, revenge. Certainly pride, and there’s just so much more passion for it.”The banter just kind of gets away with itself and gets a bit heated at times, so there’s just so much more fun and enjoyment and emotion involved in an Ashes series.”Immediately after sweeping their rain-affected ODI and T20I series against West Indies 3-0 and 1-0, the England squad underwent a course of fitness testing with many found to be in the best shape of their careers, possibly helped by extra time spent in the gym because of the bad weather.”We’ve managed to really keep our conditioning good knowing that the Ashes were literally around the corner,” Brunt said. “I’ve managed to stay niggle free. I’ll always have my issues with my back, that’s just part and parcel of fast bowling.”People do like to keep things to themselves but it’s no mystery I’ve always struggled with my back and it’s always something I’ve just had to manage properly. You’ve seen me miss the third one-dayer against West Indies. That wasn’t due to injury, that was due to just being smart and management of my back. That journey, four hours down south, is just not worth it when you can expose a youngster.”Brunt took 2 for 6 and 0 for 14 in the two ODIs she played against West Indies and 2 for 22 in the sole T20I. She has 146 wickets from 118 career ODIs at an average of 22.88.Katherine Brunt bowling for England•Getty Images

Everyone in England, let alone its cricketers, has welcomed an apparent turnaround in the weather over the past week but the unseasonably wet start to the summer could have implications for the pitches used against Australia.”England wickets can be a little bit tricky sometimes,” Brunt said. “Back in the day, we used to have seaming wickets and it would be a bit traumatic for the batsmen and these days we’re producing very good batting surfaces, even though the men’s World Cup is showing that all the seamers are being greedy and taking all the wickets. But that’s considering they are bowling 80, 90 mile an hour, more than that.”I can see the women’s Ashes outside of things being more rounded, with the spinners [involved]. The men are making the wickets tired now so spin might indeed come into it at some point.”But with the Aussies themselves, you can’t beat a bit of swing, from both sides. If you can get past that early stage where the ball’s moving about, then you can really cash in.”The Ashes will be decided over three one-day matches, starting on Tuesday in Leicester, followed by a four-day Test match in Taunton from July 18 and three T20s, starting on July 26 in Chelmsford and finishing in Bristol five days later.

FIGUEIRENSE IGUALA O JOGO

49ers now make Leeds United move to sign West Ham full-back Ben Johnson

Leeds United are in the market for additions this window and are now making advances to secure the signature of a top-flight defender, according to a report.

Leeds United look to boost promotion chances in January…

Daniel Farke has left a profoundly positive impact at Elland Road since joining the club last summer and his side have strung together some impressive form this campaign as they look to keep their hopes of promotion from the Championship alive.

Nonetheless, the German coach will be aware that signings will be necessary this month to help turn their dreams of a Premier League return into reality. According to reports, Spezia goalkeeper Bart Dragowski is on the radar in Yorkshire and could potentially be pursued as a replacement for Frenchman Illian Meslier, who is believed to be a target for La Liga outfit Celta Vigo. Hull City have also been named as known admirers of the Polish stopper; however, they are said to have been priced out of a move due to his £16,500 wage packet.

Leeds gem who had fewer touches than Meslier was "superb" vs Cardiff

The Whites strolled to a convincing win on the road to maintain their automatic promotion bid.

Speaking to GiveMeSport last week, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook gave a general overview of potential business at Elland Road this month and has hinted that the Whites could end up having a fairly busy window, as he told the outlet: "They're going to go for it. You mentioned David Brooks, Chris Mepham of Bournemouth is someone else I think they admire. Having sent Djed Spence back, you'd have thought they've got a full-back lined up. So I think Leeds might be a lot more active than Daniel Farke is laying on."

Now, information has surfaced shedding light on the full-back signing Leeds United could look to pull off in the next few weeks, as per reports.

Leeds United open talks over Ben Johnson deal…

Taking to social media platform X, French football journalist Seb Ecrivain Foot has claimed that Leeds United hold significant interest in West Ham United defender Ben Johnson and talks over a potential deal have taken place.

Translated to English, he said: "Leeds is closely interested in West Ham defender, Ben Johnson. Discussions are underway for a possible move. A time interested by the player, Everton will not be followed up."

Leeds United transfer target Ben Johnson before a Premier League game with West Ham.

Labelled "absolutely brilliant" by former Whites man Paul Robinson and an "important player" by David Moyes, the 23-year-old has made just eight appearances in all competitions this campaign, registering a solitary assist in the process (Johnson statistics – Transfermarkt).

As previously mentioned, Leeds United may need to tap into the market following the departure of loanee Djed Spence and bringing in Johnson could be a solid piece of business by the 49ers Enterprises who may help Farke's men in their efforts to gain promotion from the Championship between now and the end of the season.

Aston Villa’s 7/10 star was the real hero over Watkins v Fulham

Aston Villa's charge towards Champions League football was handed another boost on Saturday as they picked up an excellent 2-1 victory over a Fulham side that had won seven of their 12 home matches.

It was vital that Unai Emery's side bounced back this weekend after the disappointing loss to Manchester United last Sunday, and the visitors started brilliantly, taking the lead in the 23rd minute.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Villa had less possession throughout the game, but ten minutes after the break, they added their second, which would ultimately secure them the win. The Cottagers fought back almost instantly, but the Villans held strong to claim an important three points.

This kept them fourth in the Premier League, just two points above Tottenham Hotspur, but there were two players who stood out in particular.

Ollie Watkins starred yet again

Ollie Watkins continues to exceed all expectations, and he has arguably been the best centre-forward in the league this season. The former Brentford gem has scored 13 goals this campaign while also registering ten assists, which proves he's a complete forward.

Yesterday, he netted a brace, showing up when he's needed most, like he always does. The 28-year-old was a handful throughout, using his elite movement to have five shots, creating a big chance, and winning 100% of his duels.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

Watkins is playing with extreme confidence and he seems to score with every opportunity he gets. His first goal was a composed low strike after swivelling on the ball to evade his opponent, while the second one highlighted his ability to get in behind the defence, spinning Issa Diop and smashing the ball home just inside the box.

It was an excellent performance from the England international, but there was one Villa player who may have gone slightly under the radar for his showing yesterday.

Who else starred for Aston Villa?

Just like Watkins, Douglas Luiz is one of the first names on the teamsheet and one that Emery can rely upon to bring quality, class, and leadership to the side.

That was all on display yesterday, with the Brazilian showing why he is of interest to the likes of Arsenal and why he is a class above most in his position in the league.

With Boubacar Kamara set to miss the rest of the season, Luiz was tasked with stepping up his defensive duties alongside John McGinn, however, that didn't take away from his technical ability and persistence in making things happen in the final third.

As you can see, the 25-year-old was influential in progressing the ball all game long, and without his bravery in possession, Villa would have struggled yesterday.

His ability to pass the ball into the final third and create four chances while maintaining a pass completion rate of 88% is impressive, and it was also important next to McGinn, who managed zero chances created and passes into the final third.

The midfielder also won four of his five duels while making six recoveries, which showed that he was proactive in the middle of the park. That said, the former Manchester City ace was only handed a 7/10 rating by Birmingham Live, but they did mention that he's "such a key player in this Villa team."

It was a fantastic afternoon for Villa, Emery, Watkins, Luiz, and, of course, the Villans faithful.

Ratcliffe not hanging around: Man Utd already eyeing £34m Khephren Thuram

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's regime at Manchester United could begin with a bang as the club are already thought to be eyeing up a key summer transfer, just days after the winter window slammed shut.

United hamstrung by financial fair play

Despite the clear need for reinforcements this January, with Erik ten Hag keen on adding a striker to his ranks to provide competition for the in-form Rasmus Hojlund, United were forced to watch on as other clubs did business thanks to their position with financial fair play.

"I looked but there is no space," Ten Hag explained in the dying days of the transfer window. "No space on FFP to do something about this lack of quantity in the striker position. Of course, [Marcus] Rashford can play as a striker and we have some other creative alternatives. It's clear Anthony [Martial] is out for a couple of months and it's a gap in our squad."

They were not the only side to find themselves in this position, with just nine Premier League clubs making permanent moves in the winter window, and spending falling from a massive £815million last season to just over £100m this time around, less than was spent on deadline day alone 12 months ago.

Summer planning underway

With the January window now slammed shut, attention has turned to the summer. United are thought to be keen on adding another centre-back, central midfielder and winger as well as a striker before the new season, irrespective of who is in charge of the club, and will be bolstered by the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who acquired a 25% stake in the club back in December.

As per Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, the Red Devils have already identified their ideal target in central midfield in the form of OGC Nice midfielder Khéphren Thuram, the son of French Icon Lilian and brother of Marcus Thuram, whom Manchester United have previously been credited with an interest in.

The Italian outlet claims that the French midfielder has a value believed to sit around 40m euros (£34m) and that he is also catching the eye of Serie A pair Juventus and Inter Milan, but that United could 'easily surpass any Italian offers' for the 22-year-old and Ratcliffe specifically is 'more inclined than ever to dip into his wallet'.

Man Utd may have just sold their most exciting young talent since Mainoo

Man United could regret letting go of their exciting prospect.

ByTom Lever Feb 8, 2024

Thuram has over 150 senior appearances for Nice and is a regular starter for the side when fit. His form saw him handed his France debut in March 2023, though he has yet to add to that tally of appearances for Didier Deschamps' side.

Out of contract in 2025, this summer represents the Ligue 1 side's last chance to turn a profit on the Frenchman, and he is expected to leave the club. He has previously been linked with Liverpool as well as Arsenal, though both links have since cooled.

Looking at Manchester United's midfield options, it is clear that Thuram would provide a strong option in the Old Trafford engine room. With Scott McTominay perennially linked with a move away, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro both past their best and Kobbie Mainoo still a raw talent (albeit a very good one), an overhaul in the centre of the park is just what the Red Devils require.

Of course, the arrival of Ratcliffe could speed matters up significantly, with his company INEOS also the majority owners of the Ligue 1 side where Thuram plays his football currently. Should they opt for the Frenchman, a deal may materialise very quickly.

Thuram is not the only OGC Nice star that United have previously shown interest in, with centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo also on the club's radar should Harry Maguire depart this summer.

8/10 Wolves star was just as good as Cunha & Neto vs West Brom

Wolverhampton Wanderers progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup after defeating archrivals West Brom 2-0 in the Black Country derby, although not without some traumatic scenes that saw fans in the crowd fighting each other.

It saw the game suspended while police and stewards intervened but thankfully the tie was able to get underway again as Wolves extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

Molineux Stadium will subsequently be the venue for the fifth-round tie, where they will face a Brighton side who beat Sheffield United 4-2 on Saturday.

The headlines should be all about the Old Gold winning their first game at the Hawthorns in 28 years, but it is sadly difficult to look past the crowd trouble that rather ruined the occasion.

How West Brom v Wolves played out

In truth, the game saw very little quality throughout, with both teams displaying complacency on the ball and a lack of intent to commit players forward.

The first half saw Wolves dominate the ball but rarely threaten in the final third, with the Baggies registering seven attempts. However, the quality of Pedro Neto gave Gary O’Neil’s side the advantage just before the break, springing on the counter from a West Brom corner and scoring with an emphatic finish.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

After the interval, it was West Brom’s turn to enjoy the majority of the ball, but they were unable to break down the stubborn Wolves backline. Matheus Cunha then secured the win ten minutes from time, which sparked the issue in the stands.

Matheus Cunha’s game v West Brom by numbers

Wolves’ number 12 put in yet another impressive performance, which continued his run of red-hot form.

The Brazilian has now either scored or assisted in nine of his last 13 matches across all competitions, and his goal earlier on came at the perfect time.

Cunha had the most shots for Wolves, four, and provided their biggest threat all afternoon, stepping up in the absence of Hwang Hee-chan who is at the Asia Cup.

However, the Brazilian's work rate off the ball is what made his performance impressive, as he made three tackles and chased down the opposition continuously, not allowing the baggies to have time on the ball in midfield.

Max Kilman’s stats v West Brom

The Wolves captain put in a huge performance in arguably his side's biggest game of the season.

Max Kilman

Max Kilman was unfazed by the occasion, and he went about his business with class and dominance, just like he usually does.

A last-ditch piece of defending to prevent an easy tap-in from Brandon Thomas-Asante was the highlight of his game, as a goal could have seen the tie switch from a relatively comfortable afternoon to a complete disaster.

The 26-year-old was a rock throughout and was always one step ahead of the game, as displayed by his whopping nine clearances, 4/6 duels won, and four interceptions. He was comfortable on the ball and rarely gave it away unless attempting a long ball, which allowed Wolves to maintain control, particularly in the first half.

Therefore, it was hardly a surprise that he was awarded an 8/10 match rating by Birmingham World's Charlie Haffenden for his performance.

Picking up a rather fortunate assist for Cunha’s goal and claiming a consecutive clean sheet was just the cherry on top for the dynamic defender who bossed the game from the first whistle to the last.

Andrew Salter denied by AJ Tye as Gloucestershire tie thriller in Cardiff

Gloucestershire 172 for 7 (Salter 4-12) tied with Glamorgan 172 for 5 (Fakhar 58)Glamorgan’s Andrew Salter returned the superb figures of 4 for 12 in three overs, including a first-ball wicket and three more in the space of seven deliveries, but AJ Tye battled back for Gloucestershire to seal a thilling tie in the Vitality Blast clash at Cardiff.Gloucestershire, set a daunting 173 for victory following a brisk half-century from Fakhar Zaman and a turbo-charged 42 from 21 balls from Chris Cooke, suffered a terrible start when Miles Hammond was deceived by Salter’s offspin, knocking a simple catch back to the bowler off the first ball of the innings. Two overs later, the visitors lost their second wicket, when James Bracey was caught off Marchant De Lange on the midwicket boundary.Gloucestershire were 46 for 2 after six overs, but in the next over Michael Klinger edged Dan Douthwaite’s fifth ball to the wicketkeeper, and with Graham Wagg conceding just three runs from his first over, Glamorgan’s bowlers held the upper hand. After ten overs Gloucestershire required a further 100 runs, but Cockbain raised their spirits by taking 14 runs from Wagg’s third over before Salter burst back into the action, ending his stay for an aggressive 40.With five overs left, the visitors required 57, but Salter struck twice more in three balls to dismiss Higgins and Jack Taylor. Billy Root held on to a low catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Higgins before Taylor drove to long-on.Tye, however, was not done yet, and hauled Gloucestershire back into contention with a violent innings of 38 from 19 balls, including three fours and a six.He struck De Lange’s penultimate over for 19, though he was also dropped by Colin Ingram in the process, a simple chance at mid-off.With 14 needed in the final over, Benny Howell smashed Lukas Carey for six to keep his side in the hunt, only to fall the next ball, but Tye scrambled Gloucestershire to parity with a brace of twos off the final two balls of the innings, and deny Glamorgan their first win of the Blast campaign.
