Newcastle "ready" to table £42.6m offer for "great talent" this summer

Newcastle United are preparing to submit a £42.6m offer for a "great talent" currently at one of Europe's best teams this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies will want to build on what is already a strong squad at the end of the season, as they look to push on in 2024/25, getting back into the Champions League in the process.

Centre-back looks an important position to add to in the coming months, not least because Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles could be out for most of the year with ACL injuries. A defender who has been constantly linked with a move to Newcastle in recent times is Ousmane Diomande, who has proven to be a key figure for Sporting CP, guiding them towards Primeira Liga title glory.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-gossip-arsenal-sporting-edu-arteta-jurrien-timber

Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi is another name who has been thrown into the mix, and in the same report, Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella and Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane have been mentioned as options further up the pitch.

There is certainly a need for attacking reinforcements, too, especially if the likes of Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson move on, and Ivan Toney has emerged as an option for the Magpies, with Chelsea also interested in snapping him up. The England international may want a move to a bigger club this summer, and he could thrive for Eddie Howe's side, having scored 36 goals in 82 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle want to sign "great talent"

According to Defensa Central [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are "ready" to splash out €50m (£42.6m) on Real Madrid star Arda Guler this summer, too, with PIF not messing around ahead of the next window.

Spurs transfer target Arda Guler in action for Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old moved to the La Liga champions from Fenerbahce last year, but he has found minutes hard to come by, with just one start in the league coming his way, and only six appearances in the competition overall.

Considering how highly-rated Guler is, he could be a spectacular signing by Newcastle, coming in as a young player with an enormous amount of potential. Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti heaped praise on the £86,000-a-week ace earlier in the season, saying: "He made a move of great skill. He is a great talent, he has improved a lot, and he plays with more intensity now. He has a future here, no doubt about it."

Admittedly, there is every chance that Madrid want to keep hold of the Turk, with his lack of minutes partly down to age, so Newcastle may have to make a move to St James' Park sound extremely appealing to have any chance of getting him.

The fact that the Magpies are even being linked with such a gifted player says a lot about the strides made under Howe and PIF, and while this season has been a disappointing one, signing footballers of Guler's calibre will only help take them to the next level.

Joe Root, Jos Buttler fifties headline England's first outing in Sri Lanka

There were half-centuries for Joe Root and Jos Buttler as England were bowled out for 316 on day one of their opening tour match in Sri Lanka. Buttler, who has retained his billing as first-choice wicketkeeper despite the presence of Ben Foakes on tour, top-scored with 79 to hint at a return to form after a difficult winter.England kept faith with the same batting line-up that helped secure a 3-1 win in South Africa earlier this year, before allowing time in the middle for Foakes and Keaton Jennings lower down the order. The tourists are set to make full use of their 16-man squad through the course of the three-day game.Openers Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley made a solid start, adding 52 for the first wicket before Sibley fell lbw. Crawley played positively for 43 off 45 balls, only to be bowled by medium-pacer Lahiru Samarakoon, then Root and Joe Denly put on another half-century stand for the third wicket.England slipped from 124 for 2 to 142 for 5, as Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes – who only arrived in Sri Lanka on Thursday – fell cheaply, and Root became a second lbw victim for Kavishka Anjula before tea. But Buttler continued to apply himself during an understated, 159-ball knock, helping to add a further 115 runs for the next two wickets, in partnership with Foakes and then Jennings. The SLC XI included two Test spinners, in Malinda Pushpakumara and Tharindu Kaushal, but on a green pitch it was Samarakoon who enjoyed most success, taking 3 for 63. Samarakoon trapped Buttler lbw and had Chris Woakes caught behind as England were bowled out late in the day.Chris Silverwood, England’s coach, was pleased with the first-day progress, but expected the conditions for the first Test on March 19, in just under a fortnight’s time, to be very different.”It has been green to be fair, there’s more grass than you would expect to see here. We’d expect to see more spin down in Galle,” he said. “That’s not a bad thing, the wicket has been a good deck and made us work hard and it was good to see a couple of lads get decent scores.”You try and prepare for all circumstances, so we’ve been practising spin in the nets but we’ve also had good practice against our own seamers as well. Sri Lanka have a different coaching staff in place with different ideas, so we have to be open minded and prepare for all circumstances.”Silverwood was pleased too with the form that Buttler showed after a tough tour of South Africa, in which he managed a top score of 29 in the four Tests.”It will have brought Jos some confidence, how well he has played today and he’ll take that forward. It’s great to see him out there doing well,” he said.

"أعتذر له".. كريم طارق يوضح كواليس إصابة المهدي سليمان الخطيرة

تحدث كريم طارق، لاعب فريق طلائع الجيش، عن تدخله مع المهدي سليمان، حارس مرمى الاتحاد السكندري، والذي أدى إلى إصابة الأخير.

Howe must now drop Newcastle’s 7/10 ace to allow teammate to thrive

Newcastle United will be looking to make it five Premier League games unbeaten when they travel to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this evening.

Eddie Howe's side produced a sensational display against Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park last time out, with the Magpies defeating Ange Postecoglou's men 4-0.

Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar all found themselves on the scoresheet, as the Magpies look to close the gap on the European places between now and the end of the campaign.

However, they will face a tough test in London tonight, with Oliver Glasner's side winning their last two outings, including a 1-0 victory at Anfield against Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool.

Unsurprisingly, very few changes will be made from the convincing victory over Spurs last weekend, but Howe must recall one Newcastle player to give himself the best chance of claiming all three points.

The man to make way against Palace

Despite being part of a backline that kept a clean sheet against Spurs, Howe must replace Emil Krafth for the trip to Selhurst Park this evening.

The Swedish defender completed 14 passes at a completion rate of 70%, whilst also winning two of his five duels that he contested.

Krafth was also awarded a 7/10 rating for his performance by Shields Gazette journalist Dominic Scurr, with the defender forming a solid partnership with goalscorer Schar.

It has to be said, considering the recent injury crisis within the Newcastle squad, the 29-year-old has filled in when needed and produced some solid performances.

However, despite his admirable displays, he should make way for another Magpies player, given how Palace are likely to set up for the Premier League clash.

Under new boss Glasner, the Eagles have switched to a 3-4-3 system, putting a lot of emphasis on creating opportunities and overloading in wide areas.

Emil Krafth for Newcastle.

6 foot 6 defender Dan Burn has often featured at left-back this season under Howe, but his lack of pace may be a weak point for the Magpies in the crunch clash.

The Newcastle-born defender still deserves to start, with Burn needing to shift to a more natural central role alongside Schar, thus ensuring Howe may utilise another talent in Krafth's place.

The man to replace Krafth vs Palace

After signing for £28m from fellow Premier League side Chelsea this season, full-back Lewis Hall has found opportunities hard to come by since his move to St James' Park.

The "quality" youngster, as dubbed by scout Jacek Kulig, has only featured in 12 Premier League games this season, failing to have the immediate impact he would've envisaged.

However, with the season drawing to a close, Howe must give the 19-year-old a run in the side to stake his claim for a regular first-team spot next season.

His energetic and aggressive playstyle would combat the Eagles' system and restrict the opportunities they can create down Newcastle's left-hand side.

Hall – who ranks in the top 13% among his European peers for touches in the opposition box – has the ability to create frequent attacking opportunities, something which Burn struggles with, allowing the likes of Isak and Gordon to create more problems in the final third at Selhurst Park.

It certainly would be a bold call to drop Krafth given his recent performances. However, given how the opposition are likely to set up, it would be the perfect opportunity for Howe to reintroduce the youngster to combat the threat that the Eagles pose.

Buckle up for the India v Pakistan 2011 World Cup semi-final in Mohali

The Preview by Sriram Veera29-Mar-2020

AFP

The Big pictureBeyond the hype, this contest can perhaps be best viewed through the prism of the two captains. Shahid Afridi is the passionate, exhibitionist leader who doesn’t mind showing his emotions on the field. He will shout, cajole, plead, laugh, roar and feel every pulsating moment of the contest. It’s exactly what this Pakistan team needs after the controversies of 2010 – someone who can remind them of the school-boyish joy that this game can provide.MS Dhoni is the uber-cool captain and, while he can be vocal while dealing with the press, he is almost invisible on the field. Silent nods of appreciation, a quiet word in the ear, calm instructions, a shrug of the shoulder is all you will get from him. And again, it’s what this star-heavy team needs. Someone who can be calm and remind them of the basics of the game.Pakistan – who told their players they could be here in the semi-finals? – almost renew themselves with each crisis. That’s how it has been always: Controversies. Paralysis. Rebirth. Success. And more controversies. This was a big tournament for the survival of Misbah-ul-Haq, in the middle of a great comeback. In a sense, the Lord’s Test spot-fixing saga and its sordid aftermath was actually a blessing in disguise since it paved the way for his return. For Younis Khan, too, survival instinct, as a batsman facing a dip in form before the tournament, would have helped in dealing with that crisis. Playing his last tournament, Shoaib Akhtar knew this was the time to let his game do the talking. And for that man Afridi, mentally almost perennially young, this was the best chance to dazzle on the biggest stage. He has taken that chance and led the team with great passion. Kamran Akmal lives and breathes in amnesia. Bad memories don’t haunt him – who else could have recovered so well after that nightmarish effort against New Zealand? And yet nothing much has changed with the way they play cricket on the field. It’s still the bowlers who win the games for them. For all that is mercurial about them, Pakistan have lost just one game in this tournament.India have occasionally limped, at times choked, sometimes dazzled, before beating Australia to reach to the semi-finals. The progress card has the bowlers in the red, the batsmen guilty of not finishing the job, and the fielding has always been almost beyond redemption. Their mode of progress should actually have freed them up in some ways. The batsmen must have realised that they can’t try too hard to cover up for their bowlers’ weakness by trying to pile on too much, with the batting Powerplay pulling the rug from under their feet a few times. The bowlers showed they are learning from the serial hiding by putting up a pretty disciplined effort against Australia. In some ways, the pressure must be off them, as not many would be surprised if they leak 300 runs. It’s the batting India depend on. Is there any weakness in it barring those Powerplay debacles? Gautam Gambhir hasn’t been at his personal best – were he playing at his optimum, he would have rendered Virat Kohli superfluous at No. 4. Yet Gambhir’s slightly iffy form has made Kohli vital in that middle order. Prior to the tournament, it was felt that Kohli would be a misfit in the lower order, where Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan would be more dangerous, and that he might be wasted even further up. But Gambhir hasn’t been at his fluent best and India have turned to Kohli to take them through the middle overs. Gambhir has always raised his game against Pakistan and his form will be crucial on Wednesday as it would then give the middle order the licence to attack.Form guideIndia WWLWW (completed matches, most recent first)

Watch out for…Virender Sehwag: In the past few games Sehwag has – curiously, for a batsman so wonderfully innovative as him – tried to hit every spinner through the off side. He would back away and try to drive, slice or cut and has fallen a few times in the process. Pakistan might well have a spinner bowling at him early and it will be fascinating to see whether Sehwag will retain that off-side bias or be more inclusive, and open, in his approach.Umar Gul’s yorkers: After Lasith Malinga, Gul has probably the best control over the yorker in world cricket today. There have of course been days when the radar has been awry but more often than not he has got them right. The Indian lower middle order will be fully tested by the yorkers, slower ones and the bouncers that he loves to bowl.Sachin Tendulkar v Abdul Razzaq: Bowlers like Hansie Cronje and Razzaq, more than the Umar Guls and the Shoaib Akhtars, have been reasonably successful against Tendulkar. Cronje used to tease Tendulkar with deliveries shaping away from a length outside off while Razzaq specialises in the opposite: he slides the ball back in, looking for that lbw. He hasn’t always had success, but it will be a mini-battle worth watching. Will Tendulkar opt for all-out attack or will he bat with relative care against Razzaq?Zaheer Khan v Kamran Akmal: Kamran loves to square drive and Zaheer has been able to bend the ball back in to the right-hand batsmen this tournament with the new ball. This contest should be fun.Umar Akmal v spin: India will rely a lot on the slow bowlers during the middle overs, and Umar is the middle-order batsman who loves to attack spin. He has laid into the likes of Daniel Vettori on the tour of New Zealand and is always itching to cut and slog-sweep.Team newsThe signs are that Ashish Nehra is likely to replace Munaf Patel. Even Yusuf Pathan has been sweating it out in the nets raising speculations that he might push R Ashwin hard for a spot in the team. Ashwin has been really good in the games he has played and has added some teeth to the attack while the nature of the track has made India think about bringing in Yusuf.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Suresh Raina, 8 Yusuf Pathan / R Ashwin, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish NehraPakistan are thinking of playing three seamers. The choice for the third seamer is between Shoaib and Wahab Riaz. Afridi said Shoaib wasn’t 100% fit but a decision will be taken on the evening preceding the match.Pakistan (probable) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi (capt), 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Saeed Ajmal / Abdur Rehman, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Wahab Riaz / Shoaib Akhtar. It’s a batting pitch but what’s eating everyone is the dew factor.Heavy storms, lightning and rain lashed Chandigarh late on match eve, immediately adding a light shroud of doubt over the game. For the whole day there were no signs, not even a hint of rain playing a spoil-sport but around 9pm, there were rumbling sounds of thunder accompanied by high-speed winds. The velocity of the winds were so strong that the heavy iron barricades manning the team hotel were blown away. The weather forecast for Wednesday suggests sunshine during the day with minimal chance of heavy rain. Punjab Cricket Association officials said that they had studied the forecasts for the period ending March 31 and there was “zero precipitation” expected. In simple terms, there are no strong rains expected on the day of the match.Stats and trivia Afridi is the first bowler in World Cup history to take four wickets in a match on four different occasions in a tournamentMS Dhoni is the only wicketkeeper-captain who has played in 100 ODIsZaheer Khan is the second Indian bowler after Javagal Srinath (44 wickets) to take more than 40 wickets in World CupsQuotes”I feel I have been batting really well. It is just that in some situation I could not bat flamboyantly. If you bat at 5, 6 or 7, and if the top order does really well, it does not give opportunity to lower-order batsmen. The last game was an ideal game where I could have got a bit more runs which were needed at that point of time. So form has been a worry it is just that sometimes there were not many opportunities and when there was an opportunity and there were times I was not able to score in a particular game”.

Journalist thinks "forgotten" £27,000-a-week Rangers player could be sold

With their Scottish Premiership title hopes now in the hands of leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic, Rangers could be set to make some ruthless decisions this summer, which could see one particular defender depart.

Rangers transfer news

As things stand, the Gers are set to bid farewell to several players at the end of their current contracts this summer, with Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin and Ryan Jack all set to leave Ibrox at the end of the season. One player who may not suffer that fate, however, is John Lundstram with negotiations ongoing regarding his new contract just weeks away from the expiration of his current deal.

Clement can ease Ridvan blow with Rangers' "surprise" Barisic rival

Clement must make a few changes to his starting XI ahead of the trip to face Dundee…

ByRoss Kilvington Apr 17, 2024

Following those departures, though, Rangers will have room to make improvements, with Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes already linked with permanent moves, whilst a move for Eduard Spertsyan has also been mentioned in three moves which would boost Philippe Clement's frontline this summer. And whilst attacking incomings potentially enter Ibrox this summer, they could be funded by the sale of those struggling to break into Clement's current side, with Ben Davies among those.

The former Liverpool defender has endured a frustrating season and journalist Chris Jack now believes the "forgotten" Davies could be among those shown the door at Rangers this summer.

Jack told Rangers Review, relayed by Ibrox News: “It’s been a long time since he’s been on the pitch and [he’s] just become one of the forgotten guys. I think it’s safe to say the manager doesn’t see a place for him, doesn’t rate him.

“There was a lot of talk in the January window about Davies potentially moving on. It’s looking like he’s definitely one the manager will look to shift in the summer. If he’s not even going to get in the matchday squad at present it’s hard to see how he’s got a long-term future.”

Ben Davies' continued struggles

In truth, Davies has struggled since completing a surprise move from Preston North End to Liverpool in January of 2021. Failing to ever break into Jurgen Klopp's plans amid a defensive crisis, the central defender completed a loan switch to Sheffield United before eventually escaping his Anfield nightmare courtesy of a permanent move to Rangers.

Ben Davies

Things haven't gone much better in Scotland, however, and after just 12 appearances in all competitions, it's fair to say that Davies may need to move on once again. Now 28 years old, the former Preston man could soon have the chance to get his next move right, given that he is still in what is usually considered a player's prime.

If any club does come for Davies this summer, then his reported £27k per-week salary may prove to be an obstacle. According to Salary Sport, it made him one of Rangers' highest earners in 2023 in what comes as a shock given that he is now on the fringes of Clement's plans at Ibrox.

As the transfer window approaches, it looks as though Clement will have no time for sentiment with some ruthless decisions set to take place ahead of his first full season in charge of Rangers.

UK club cricket full of untapped talent from minority backgrounds – Amar Virdi

Surrey offspinner outlines challenges faced by cricketers from Asian backgrounds

Matt Roller27-Jun-2020Amar Virdi, the Surrey offspinner, has said that club cricket in the UK is full of untapped talent from ethnic minority backgrounds and encouraged counties to be proactive in helping young players understand how to break into professional set-ups.Speaking from England’s bio-secure bubble at the Ageas Bowl, Virdi detailed the challenges faced by cricketers from Asian backgrounds trying to play professionally, and said that it could be “very daunting” for players from minority backgrounds to play for bigger clubs.”I started at Indian Gymkhana Cricket Club [in Osterley], which is a majority-Asian club, and I found it daunting moving to Sunbury which I did at about 12 years old,” Virdi said. “But it was the best move for my cricket, because it’s important to play at a standard where it’s recognised and you’ve got ex-pros at the club and you’ve got a lot of support.”It’s changing now, but a maybe a lot of kids from minorities don’t go to private schools. Maybe they’re first or second generation here, maybe they might not be able to afford those opportunities. That also can be a problem because maybe they’re not being seen by people in the county set-up.”ALSO READ – Virdi hoping to jump to front of England spin queueVirdi emphasised the role that his own parents had played in his career to date, but said that one of the main stumbling blocks for young Asian players is that their families do not know how the county set-up works. His comments demonstrate that the lack of ethnic diversity at county clubs is a deep-rooted structural problem: Vikram Solanki became the first British Asian head coach at a county this month when he was appointed at Surrey, and Mark Alleyne remains the only black British man to do so this century.”A lot of people don’t understand how much commitment it takes from a parent,” Virdi said. “If you’re at a private school, you’re getting cricket there on a weekly basis or a few times a week, but my school didn’t even play cricket, so that’s another avenue.”I’m really lucky because my parents were really supportive. A lot of people’s parents are busy making ends meet, and they don’t have time necessarily to take their kids to practice, but I’m so thankful to my mum and dad that they took time to support me, driving me up and down the country, and without that I wouldn’t be here.”A big thing, I think, that should be done is more education for the minority communities and for parents to know how the actual county system works. A lot of people I speak to don’t even know how to start. There’s so much talent, from so many different communities, it definitely needs to be tapped into.”Virdi also suggested that a major stumbling block for a lot of Asian players in the UK was that they had grown up supporting a subcontinental side rather than England.”A lot of it is to do with your mindset and definitely your upbringing,” he said. “Growing up a lot of people’s parents support India, for example, so you grow up supporting India or wherever you’re from or where your family background is. What’s fundamental is that even from a young age I’ve always supported England and that’s important to have that mindset firstly.”If Virdi makes his Test debut this summer, as he thinks he can, he would become only the third Sikh to play for England after Monty Panesar and Ravi Bopara. The ECB’s South Asian action plan, devised in 2018 to help engage South Asians in the UK who feel there are barriers to entry within the game, stresses the need to “celebrate heroes”, and Virdi said that seeing someone who “looks very similar” in the England team growing up had spurred him on.”Growing up I watched Graeme Swann and Monty [Panesar] bowling and that was very inspirational to me,” Virdi said. “Obviously with Monty as well because he looks very similar to me, especially being from the community that I am. We’re in a minority in a lot of industries so when you do see someone progressing and doing well in that particular field that you’re in, it really motivates you and shows you that can do it if they’re doing it as well.”
