Dyche must part ways with Everton man who earns over 2x more than McNeil

In recent years, Everton have conducted sensible business, investing in up-and-coming talents that would bolster their squad and make the club a tidy profit in the process.

The club have moved away from signing high-profile names who have excelled previously, before arriving at Goodison Park, failing to make an impact and pocketing a small fortune from the club.

Additions of players such as Jarrad Branthwaite and James Garner are prime examples of their excellent dealings, with the duo joining the club for a combined £10m, before benefitting from regular game time, which has seen their values soar to a total of £44.7m as per Transfermarkt.

Everton midfielder James Garner.

However, the club have slipped back to their old ways with one addition who has failed to make an impact during his short stint on Merseyside this campaign.

The player joined the club with high expectations of taking the attacking department to the next level, but he's disappointed during his limited game time under boss Sean Dyche.

Arnaut Danjuma's stats at Everton

After multiple failed attempts at convincing the winger to join the Toffees, Everton finally signed Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal last summer, on a deal until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

At the time, it looked as though Dyche and his side conducted smart business in bringing the Dutchman to Goodison, however, the move has been a disaster for all parties involved.

Everton forward Arnaut Danjuma.

The 27-year-old has only made 14 appearances for the Toffees since the start of the season, starting just 14% of the club's Premier League outings in a campaign where the side claimed survival with three games to spare despite receiving a total of eight points deducted after multiple PSR breaches.

Danjuma has only found the back of the net on one occasion for the Toffees in the Premier League, scoring in the 2-2 draw away at Sheffield United at the start of the season.

His lack of minutes on the pitch has been further highlighted in recent weeks, with his start against Fulham back in January his latest appearance for the club, in what has been a disappointing campaign for the forward.

It's clear that Danjuma has fallen out of favour under Dyche, with the attacker failing to appear at all, despite the club's recent injury troubles at the top end of the pitch, with youngster Youssef Chermiti preferred to the Dutchman after injuries to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto.

Both parties will be desperate for the spell to come to an end, with the Toffees also needing to clear his hefty earnings off the wage bill ahead of the summer.

Arnaut Danjuma's wage at Everton

Although he's only on loan at Everton for the current campaign, Danjuma is still earning £52.5k-per-week, as per Capology – a huge amount given his lack of impact at Goodison, having now become something of a forgotten figure.

Arnaut Danjuma

The "rubbish" loanee, as dubbed by Daily Mail journalist Ian Ladyman, will have pocketed a total of £2.7m in wages alone this season, a figure that would've seen him earn £450k per start.

His income at Everton is currently more than double than that of fellow attacker Dwight McNeil, who earns a reported £25k-per-week, despite keeping the 27-year-old out of the team for the vast majority of the 2023/24 season.

It's a shame that the move for the attacker hasn't worked out this season, but the Toffees will be relieved that he's only at the club on a temporary basis, with Dyche able to reinvest the money elsewhere during the upcoming transfer window.

The summer could be a busy one for Everton, with sales needed to avoid further punishment, but also giving them the opportunity to showcase their excellent recruitment demonstrated in previous windows.

Aaron Finch eyes Australia tour of England to try out 2023 ODI World Cup plans

Says they “haven’t been where we need to be in the world rankings and been as consistent” in the 50-over format

Andrew McGlashan26-Aug-2020Aaron Finch, the Australia limited-overs captain, has used the extended downtime created by Covid-19 to map out a plan to take Australia into the 2023 World Cup. He wants to start implementing it on the England tour which will mark their first cricket for more than five months. While Australia have moved to top of the T20I rankings with nine wins in their last 11 matches – and would have been one of the favourites going into the now-postponded T20 World Cup on home soil which was due to take place in October-November this year – their ODI cricket has again been uncertain after they reached the semi-finals last year in the UK.ALSO READ: Glenn Maxwell eyes ODI all-round role and T20 finisher’s job on Australia returnAlthough the next T20 World Cup will now be in India in 2021, with the Australia event in 2022, Finch said before leaving for the England tour that he did not think it would need any drastic rethinking.Instead, Finch has focused on what needs to be done over the next three years leading into 2023, which he has also earmarked as his retirement date. He is eager for the players to get used to a style of play that will carry them into that tournament. Although they reached the semi-finals last time their team and tactics came together at the 11th hour, Finch wants a more controlled longer-term vision.”One-day cricket we haven’t been where we need to be in the world rankings and been as consistent,” he said. “We’ve been doing a lot of work on that over the last couple of months as management, with myself involved in that as well. We feel as though we have a style that can win us that World Cup and to keep implementing that over a long period of time and becoming second nature will be really important.”In the T20I format, Australia will expect to challenge England although the hosts may bring back some first-choice players who were involved in the Test side such as Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer.”Having got to No.1 in the world in T20 cricket we want to stay there and keep improving on our game,” Finch said. “We feel our game plan has been really solid for quite a while and we’re really comfortable how that looks for various conditions and opponents.”The first couple of days of Australia’s tour mostly involved a spot of golf on the outfield, a Covid-19 test and then watching the rain fall, but Finch expects the squad to show “high intensity” when they begin their inter-squad warm-up matches in Southampton on Friday. After a 19-hour journey on a chartered jet via Colombo and Dubai into East Midlands airport which arrived on Monday morning, Australia settled into their short-term base at the County Ground in Derby. Greeted by sunshine they underwent their first Covid-19 swabs of the trip – having all been tested before flying out – while the groundsman laid out some mats to allow them to hit a few golf shots within the bio-secure bubble. Then they opened their curtains on Tuesday to a deluge leaving them to use the indoor school to shake off the jetlag. On Thursday the squad will relocate to the Ageas Bowl following the conclusion of England’s Test series against Pakistan and begin the serious build-up with their first of five practice games. The matches – one 50-over game and four T20s – won’t follow the exact model of the Ashes trial game last year (at the same ground) when two sets of players faced off to secure the remaining spots in the Test squad, but putting together a collection of cricketers who haven’t played a match in more than five months is likely to be competitive.”Coming off such a long layoff – it’s going to be really important for us to get together again and have a real high intensity hit out,” Finch said. “Between myself and [vice-captain] Pat Cummins, we will sit down and pick a couple of sides later today.”First up it’s about getting a little bit of rust out, we haven’t played a competitive match for five months. I know guys will be feeling their way back so we have to understand that, but so long as we keep improving and every opportunity we get to perform that we learn from that…then we’ll be on the right track.”With 21 to select from – an extra player is expected to come from the Hampshire staff for the warm-up matches – there will be no shortage of options for the final XIs when the internationals come around. The T20I side will be strengthened by the return of Glenn Maxwell who is likely to slot in at No. 5, possibly in place of Matthew Wade, who played the series against South Africa in March. It is also likely that Maxwell will return to the ODI middle order with Australia still trying find the ideal balance to their batting order. Their first-choice pace attack of Mitchell Starc, Cummins and Josh Hazlewood is very strong while Adam Zampa plays a key role with his legspin. Wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Philippe, left-arm seamer Daniel Sams and quick bowler Riley Meredith are the three uncapped players.

Simon Harmer six-for sees Essex get on top against Surrey

Simon Harmer bagged his 18th first-class five-wicket haul for Essex as the hosts helped themselves to a healthy first-innings lead over Surrey in the Bob Willis Trophy. Offspinner Harmer has now taken 229 wickets since joining Essex at the beginning of the 2017 season as he returned figures of 6 for 67.Harmer was the County Championship’s leading wicket-taker with 83 scalps last year and looks likely to replicate that record in the Bob Willis Trophy – with no rival taking more than his 12 poles so far in the competition. The South African shared the wickets with trusty partner Jamie Porter, who claimed 4 for 53, as Surrey were bowled out for 187, in response to Essex’s 262 – a deficit of 75, which rose to 88 in a wicketless four-over twilight burst. After Essex had lost their last three first-innings wickets inside seven overs, Porter blasted a hole at the top of the Surrey batting order with two wickets in two balls. The seamer forced Ryan Patel to hand Harmer a regulation catch at second slip with his sixth delivery, before Scott Borthwick tucked off his hip to Feroze Khushi at midwicket. Will Jacks saw off the hat-trick as he dug out a yorker as he began to work his way towards a well-made 70. At the other end, Mark Stoneman struggled to get out of neutral gear as he scored five singles in 65 balls before edging Harmer to Alastair Cook, before Jamie Smith had the top of his off peg knocked back by Porter.Jacks was dropped on 26, 31 and 46 – twice by Varun Chopra at short leg and once by Aaron Beard at deep fine leg – but moved to his seventh first-class fifty in 81 balls. The 21-year-old made batting look uncomplicated, on a sun-kissed pitch best suited to patience, with 12 boundaries struck all around the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford. He had been joined by Laurie Evans – who was playing his first innings in a decade for Surrey – for a valuable 80-run stand for the fifth wicket. Evans, on loan from Sussex due to Surrey’s 14-man absentee list, had played four first-class matches during his first stint at the county between 2005 and 2010 before joining Warwickshire. He was the aggressor, particularly against Harmer, whom he struck for three perfectly nailed sweeps and a six over long-on.Both fell either side of tea to spark a second collapse of the innings – Surrey losing three wickets for three runs as Harmer took control. Jacks pushed Harmer to midwicket before Porter bowled Evans.Since Harmer arrived at Chelmsford on a Kolpak deal, he and Porter have shared 428 first-class wickets and two County Championship titles together.Chopra made amends for his early spills when he clung onto a stunner under the lid to dismiss Gus Atkinson, and then held onto a loopier catch off Rikki Clarke’s bat-pad. Harmer’s five-for was confirmed when Adam Finch clipped around the corner to Tom Westley.Essex were frustrated for 10 overs by the last-wicket pair of James Taylor and Amar Virdi, before the former picked out Nick Browne at cow corner. Browne immediately turned around to stick his pads on for four overs with Cook – the pair getting through Clarke and Virdi’s overs unscathed.Earlier, Essex had only added nine runs to their overnight score of 253. Clarke was the chief tail destroyer as he returned figures of 3 for 26 – only going for one boundary in his 21 overs.Handed the new ball at the start of the day, Clarke taught a young Surrey bowling attack how to rip through a tail. The fresh leather caused extra bounce off a length, which caught Beard out as he edged behind in the third over of the day, before a fuller delivery pinned Sam Cook lbw.Clarke’s lesson was heeded by debutant Atkinson who wrapped up the innings when Harmer top-edged a pull shot to Patel at cover.

Maresca holds Chelsea transfer talks as they eye £85 million Barcelona ace

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has already held transfer talks with Stamford Bridge chiefs behind-the-scenes, and it is believed they have set sights on a Barcelona star as part of their summer plans.

Chelsea land Maresca as new manager to replace Pochettino

Just over a week has passed since Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali decided to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino, who left the club by mutual consent last Tuesday.

Maresca wants to make £75,000-per-week ace the heartbeat of Chelsea's team

The Italian has already got his preferred players in mind.

ByEmilio Galantini May 29, 2024

The process to hire Pochettino's replacement has gone fairly smoothly after they interviewed a succession of candidates, which included the likes of Kieran McKenna, Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi.

However, despite the numerous quality alternatives, Chelsea landed on their favoured appointment in Maresca. Fabrizio Romano, sharing further detail in a Daily Briefing this week, also claims Maresca will be backed with five new summer signings.

"It’s a deal until 2029 and also with the option to extend it until 2030," wrote Romano.

"This shows Chelsea’s excitement about Maresca – their conversations over the weekend were super positive, and the Chelsea board decided to fly to Marbella to meet face to face with Maresca. They like his ideas and believe he’s a very positive coach – a dynamic, modern, young manager obsessed with possession football to control a game. I said last week when Chelsea were considering firing Mauricio Pochettino that this was the kind of manager they wanted, and here he is.

Enzo Maresca's most impressive wins as Leicester City manager

Leicester City 5-0 Southampton

Stoke City 0-5 Leicester City

Southampton 1-4 Leicester City

Blackburn 1-4 Leicester City

Leicester City 3-1 Norwich City

"It will be a busy summer for Chelsea, with around five signings, maybe less, maybe more, but for sure they are looking at goalkeepers, maybe or one or two centre-backs, and they’re also looking at central strikers and wingers. Chelsea will be busy, and Maresca will be involved.

"Of course, one signing is already agreed and that’s for talented Brazilian wonderkid Estevao Willian – everything is being reviewed and signed for this big signing for the future, who will join in 2025 from Palmeiras."

It will be interesting to see who Maresca and co opt to bring in next, with Chelsea talks already held over signing Tosin Adarabioyo as a free agent from Fulham.

It is believed they wish to bring in a new striker, goalkeeper, centre-back and left-back this summer, on top of Estevao, with The Standard making that claim and sharing news on a Barcelona star on their radar.

Maresca holds Chelsea transfer talks as they eye Ronald Araujo

As per the outlet, and journalist Nick Purewal, Maresca has already held transfer talks with Chelsea – discussing their summer plans and who they could look to bring in.

One target is believed to be Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, who is rumoured to command an £85 million price tag and could significantly reinforce Maresca's back line if a move for Tosin falls through – with Newcastle also contending for the latter.

Newcastle can land a Bruno & Joelinton hybrid in £50m gem

Newcastle United's heavy spending under the Saudi PIF could be set to continue in the summer, with the Magpies needing to dramatically improve their squad depth.

The club have looked depleted in multiple areas this campaign and undoubtedly will be looking to strengthen the defensive department after the long-term injuries suffered by Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, with the two centre-backs ruled out for up to nine months after respective ACL surgeries.

However, the Magpies will target another midfielder this window, with Eddie Howe’s side suffering with numerous issues in that department.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Joelinton has struggled with a thigh problem in recent months but has formed an excellent partnership with compatriot Bruno Guimaraes when fit.

Fellow midfielder Sandro Tonali has missed the majority of the season after his summer move, following his ban for betting in Italy. He’s set to return to action in October, but it’s unknown what fitness levels the former AC Milan man will possess after his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

After his suspension and the recent injuries, the club are targeting another midfielder this summer, with Howe needing to target one player in particular who’s caught the eye this season.

Newcastle must revive interest in Premier League talent

In recent months, Newcastle have been linked with a move for 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, following his excellent campaign under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

The Chelsea academy graduate has featured 37 times in the Premier League this season under the Argentinian, scoring five times and assisting seven – in a campaign where he's been utilised in a more advanced role.

Despite his good form in London, he could be set to depart the club, with the likes of Aston Villa also interested in signing the talent who is valued at £50m.

Gallagher has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer window, with Howe's side facing tough competition to sign the ace.

The battle is undoubtedly going to be a tough one to win for any of the sides, but the Magpies must sign the England international, with Gallagher producing stats making him the perfect Guimaraes and Joelinton hybrid.

Why Gallagher could be the perfect Guimaraes & Joelinton hybrid

When looking at the statistical record of Gallagher over the last 365 days on FBref, he’s noted as a similar player to the Brazilian pair – indicating how he could fit in smoothly at St James' Park.

The "phenomenal" midfielder, as dubbed by one Chelsea scout, has won 47% of his aerial duels and made 34 clearances – with both stats marginally higher than both of the Magpies' current midfielders.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

The Englishman has also dominated in possession, with the Chelsea talent averaging a 59% take-on success and an 89% pass completion rate – demonstrating his qualities with and without the ball.

There's no denying that Guimaraes is a crucial cog in Howe's side, but Gallagher has been very underrated in an underperforming side, with his ability in and out of possession potentially completing Newcastle's midfield puzzle.

With Guimaraes at the base and Gallagher alongside him, the central trio would seemingly then be completed by the aforementioned Joelinton, with the Brazilian committing his future to the club, signing a new long-term deal on Tyneside.

As such, Howe and the Saudi PIF should hijack any attempts from other Premier League clubs and bring the Chelsea midfielder to St James' Park this summer.

'It would be madness' – Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson makes key admission after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's side are beaten by Tom Brady's Birmingham in crunch clash

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson admitted that "it would be madness" for his club to follow in the footsteps of Tom Brady's big-spending Birmingham.

  • Wrexham beaten 3-1 by Birmingham
  • Blues had a blockbuster summer transfer window
  • Parkinson admits Wrexham cannot match their firepower
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

While Birmingham, bolstered by Brady’s investment, made waves this summer by breaking records with a £20 million ($26 million) transfer expenditure, Wrexham chose to be more pragmatic. Their biggest signing of the summer, Mo Faal from West Brom, cost £500,000, a significant investment for the Red Dragons but a fraction of Birmingham’s outlay on Jay Stansfield (£10m) from Fulham.

    WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson was clear that trying to compete financially with Birmingham would be an impossible task. "No one can compete in this division with Birmingham. It would be madness for us," he said.

"We are on a journey as a club, and we are trying to build a sustainable football club and it would be absolute madness to say we could compete with Birmingham's spending, it is just impossible.

"They have spent more than any other club outside the Premier League but if I was in their position with those resources available, you'd get the best possible players you can and that's what they've done."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Birmingham made the most of their firepower and beat Wrexham in the 'Hollywood Derby' last Monday to end their unbeaten run. However, Parkinson’s message to his team was clear as he pointed out that Wrexham had enjoyed an excellent start to the season and that one loss, especially against a well-funded and in-form Birmingham side, should not detract from their progress.

"Credit to them, we will take the defeat on the chin," said Parkinson.

"After the way we started the season, you felt we were in a really good place going into the game and it looked like that when we scored but once they got the first goal they grew in confidence. We won't get too carried away with this defeat and I don't think we should get too carried away with Birmingham. It was a good performance from them and they are unbeaten at the start of the season but there's a lot of football to be played."

Despite the defeat, Wrexham sit atop on League One standings on goal difference, having collected 13 points from their first six games. They will return to action against Crawley Town on Saturday afternoon in their league fixture.

Crystal Palace could land the ideal Eze replacement in "big game monster"

The times they are a changing, at least at Selhurst Park, anyway.

Oliver Glasner has transformed a team that just six months ago looked destined to languish in the bottom half of the Premier League table playing safe but dull football into one that might have ended up in the European places had the season not ended.

The Austrian has turned Crystal Palace into one of the most exciting teams to watch in the league, although that has also led to some of his stars, like Eberechi Eze, being increasingly linked to some of the top teams in the division.

However, if the South Londoners do lose the talented ace this summer, recent reports suggest that they already have the perfect replacement in mind to keep the Glasner revolution chugging along.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Crystal Palace are one of several Premier League sides interested in bringing Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn back to England this summer.

Steven Bergwijn for Ajax

The journalist has revealed that the Eagles could sign him as the perfect replacement if they end up losing one of Eze or Michael Olise. However, with West Ham United, Brentford, and Brighton & Hove Albion also interested, they could have a fight on their hands.

The report does not name a potential price, but it claims that Ajax's failure to qualify for the Champions League has hit them hard, and their need to raise finances could see the winger depart Amsterdam for less than the £26m he cost the club in July 2022.

Steven Bergwijn for Ajax against Brighton & Hove Albion.

It might be a tough deal to complete, but if Glasner loses Eze this summer, Steve Parish and Co could do a lot worse than give him Bergwijn wijn as a replacement.

How Bergwijn compares to Eze

Now, most Premier League fans may remember Bergwijn for his unremarkable stint with Tottenham Hotspur a few years ago, and while he wasn't particularly electric for the Lilywhites, he's been brilliant in the Netherlands and has the output to prove it.

For example, in 45 appearances last season, the Amsterdam-born wideman scored 16 goals and provided six assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every other game.

He was even more effective this season, as, despite several injuries, he scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 31 matches, an average of a goal involvement every 1.7 games.

In comparison, Eze managed to rack up ten goals and four assists in 40 games last season, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.8 games, before doing even better this year, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 31 games, which is an average of a goal involvement every 1.8 games.

It's not just his goals and assists that would make the £76k-per-week star a good replacement, though; it's also his positional versatility.

Tottenham Hotspur's Steven Bergwijn celebrates

Like the former Queens Park Rangers star, the "big game monster," as journalist John Cross dubbed him, can play either on the wing or in a more central position. This tactical flexibility could be incredibly useful for Glasner should he press on with his 3-4-2-1 formation.

Ultimately, some of the biggest clubs in the country are after Eze because he is an incredible footballer. So, while it's unlikely that Bergwijn could come in and replicate everything he does, the Dutchman looks like a good enough replacement to keep Palace moving forward based on his work over the last two seasons.
