Ronaldo was in the starting XI as Portugal beat Poland 3-1 on Saturday and was substituted off just after the hour mark having scored his team's second goal. At 39 years old, it was thought the Al-Nassr forward may be rested for their game in Glasgow, but Martinez has snubbed the idea.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT MARTINEZ SAID

"I think the age of a player doesn't come to play," he said at a press conference. "Ronaldo doesn't work as a 39-year-old player. He doesn't play certainly as a 39-year-old player. I think we are assessing every player and how they feel. Cristiano has been working really well in this camp. I think the difficulty of playing two games away from home is more how can you prepare between the two games. How can you recover with the players?"

He added: "But I have no doubt that Cristiano after 60 minutes can be involved in the second game. I don't know if he can start or if he can finish the game. But he can certainly be involved as he showed in the last camp."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Portugal captain has scored in three consecutive matches to guide his team to the top of their Nations League group with nine points. His goal against Poland took his tally for the national team up to 133.

The iconic forward may be named among the substitutes initially this week but is expected to come on against Steve Clarke's side – just as he did before scoring a late winner when the two teams met last month.

Crystal Palace two steps away from signing £63k-p/w ace who Glasner wanted

After guiding Crystal Palace to a tenth-placed finish in the Premier League last campaign, it looks like Oliver Glasner is set to receive a significant vote of confidence in the transfer market this summer.

Palace look to build upon strong end to the season

If Glasner's target was to steer Palace away from relegation, it is safe to say that the Austrian has fulfilled this brief and then some. Winning seven of his thirteen league games in charge, the South London outfit have picked up significant scalps against Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United.

After achieving their first top half finish in almost a decade, it is clear that Steve Parish is eager to bolster his side and push for European football next season. The top priority for the Eagles will be to keep existing stars at the club with the 21 goal combination of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze both attracting interest from top six sides.

As far as incomings are concerned, Parish and co appear hungry to replicate the exceptional business that saw Adam Wharton move to Palace and immediately hit the ground running. Dipping into the Championship market once again, The Eagles are reportedly interested in a move for Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham.

With opening the chequebook and spending big far from Parish's ethos, Palace have made significant steps towards signing one of this summer's most talented free agents.

Palace two steps away from getting deal over the line

As first reported on the X account of Fabrizio Romano, Palace are finalising the last steps in their pursuit of Daichi Kamada. According to Romano all that remains is for the Japanese international to pass a medical and for the contracts to be exchanged.

This deal would represent a major coup for Palace with the 27-year-old not short of suitors since his intentions to leave Lazio became known at the end of last season. Kamada previously played under Glasner at Eintracht Frankfurt, with Romano stating that the Austrian pushed heavily for a deal to happen.

Despite managing just two goals during his time in Italy, Kamada's impressive 40 goal spell at Frankfurt suggests that a reunion with Glasner could be just what the Japan international needs to get his career back on track. The 27-year-old was a key part of the Austrian's Frankfurt squad that won the Europa League back in 2022.

Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Daichi Kamada.

An attacking midfielder who is happy playing anywhere across the forward line, Kamada would be an excellent deputy to Eze and Olise as well as more than capable of stepping up if one or both end up departing this summer. With the future of Palace's two stars looking uncertain, getting a proven replacement in now would be a wise move from those at the top of the club.

Currently commanding a wage of £63,000 per week, managing to get Kamada on a free would be the latest in a long line of shrewd deals carried out under Parish's supervision.

Man Utd in agent talks for £10m striker called "on par with Erling Haaland"

Following a disappointing 8th placed finish in the Premier League last season, Manchester United now look set to bolster Erik ten Hag's squad going into the next campaign.

Man Utd eye big moves this summer

With this summer window being the first under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, there was always the assumption that the Red Devils would be set to open their chequebook and spend big.

It is the latest in a long line of brutal decisions being taken upstairs at the club.

One area that United appear desperate to improve on is in defence. The latest rumours have linked the Red Devils with a move for Lille star Leny Yoro, who also has interest from rivals Liverpool. This recent news follows the ongoing saga surrounding Jarrad Branthwaite, who has been the Red Devils' top target for some time.

Ratcliffe also seems desperate to bring a new number nine to Old Trafford this summer. Joshua Zirkzee appears to be at the top of United's shopping list with the club leading the race to exercise the Bologna talisman's £34million release clause.

With this in mind, the Red Devils are reportedly interested in bringing in another well regarded striker to the Theatre of Dreams during the transfer window.

Red Devils eye surprise swoop for Morata

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Turkish media are suggesting that Man Utd are one of a number of sides interested in a deal for Atlético Madrid striker Alvaro Morata. The outlet reports that the Red Devils are joined by AS Roma, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and lastly Fenerbahce in pursuit of the 31-year-old forward, hence the interest from the Turkish rumour mill.

It is said that Morata's agent is in talks with almost all of these clubs, including United, who appear to be in the market for a back-up striker to support Rasmus Hojlund going into next season. The Spaniard's current deal has a release clause of a little over £10million, a figure that the Red Devils should have no issue matching.

Whilst boasting a CV consisting of spells in Spain, Italy and England, Morata has often struggled for consistency in front of goal, particularly during his time with Chelsea back in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Despite his previous struggles, Morata has carved out a decent career for himself at current side Atlético Madrid. Since returning to the Spanish capital in 2022, the striker has become a fan favourite at the Metropolitano Stadium, scoring 15 and 21 league goals in each of his full seasons at the club.

Morata's recent displays have seen him star as Spain's first choice striker at Euro 2024, even captaining his nation during the early passages of the tournament.

It was his exploits last season that saw Morata earn praise from Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who made a bold claim about the striker to the press: "Alvaro Morata is on par with Erling Haaland. In terms of goals and his numbers, he can certainly be compared to him."

Whilst a comparison to the seemingly unstoppable Haaland may be a bit of a stretch, there is no doubt that Morata would be a great addition to the Red Devils' squad if they are determined to let Hojlund flourish as the number one option.

Rooney’s dismissal came in the 86th minute when Blackburn equalised through Joe Rankin-Costello. The former striker was adamant that a foul had been committed in the lead-up to the goal, particularly on Ryan Hardie, and made his frustration known to the fourth official Jacob Miles. Miles felt that Rooney had been too aggressive in his protest and called over referee James Linington, who gave the manager the marching orders.

However, Plymouth roared back into the match with a late winner through Morgan Whittaker which lifted Rooney's spirits. After the final whistle, he emerged from the tunnel and joined his players on the pitch to celebrate the win with the Home Park crowd. According to the players then started teasing him about the potential fine for his dismissal with one of them even heard asking, "How much of a fine are you paying, gaffer?"

  • WHAT PETE SHUTTLEWORTH SAID

Plymouth Argyle’s assistant head coach, Pete Shuttleworth, was quick to defend Rooney's reaction, emphasizing the passion and commitment the former England striker brings to the team. Speaking after the game, Shuttleworth noted, "We were disappointed with their goal, I think that was evident and we could have easily gone under at that point. We didn’t we went down the other end and had a couple of chances and Morgan pops up with a header in the middle of the goal which was fantastic. Wayne’s still passionate. He has got that passion. We were disappointed there wasn’t a foul given for the foul on Ryan Hardie leading up to the goal."

The victory against Blackburn was Plymouth’s third consecutive win at home, following triumphs over Sunderland and Luton Town. A delighted Shuttleworth added: "To win three games against three good teams – Sunderland who were top, Luton just down from the Premier League and Blackburn who were unbeaten until this week – is great, especially going into the international break. I thought it was excellent from start to finish. To win a game like that is really exciting and the fans go home really pleased. I thought we were outstanding and fully deserved to win."

Rangers want to sign 32 y/o who said it would be "special" to play at Ibrox

Rangers lost out on both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup to their closest rivals, so this summer could prove vital in their quest to return to the summit of Scottish football.

Rangers look to close the gap with rivals this summer

The latest rumours out of Ibrox point towards Rangers being in the market for attacking reinforcements. Theo Bair is a name that has been linked with Rangers as of recent, however, they will have to battle it out with rivals Celtic for the signature of Motherwell's top scorer.

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 24, 2024

Other recent reports suggest that Rangers are among a host of clubs who want to sign Middlesbrough striker Ajay Matthews. At just 18, the youngster scored 16 goals in 17 starts for Boro's youth side last season. Joining Matthews on Philipe Clement's wishlist is Coventry star Callum O'Hare who is available on a free this summer.

With Rangers looking towards the English Championship for their transfer inspiration this summer, it now appears that another of the league's stars is being targeted by the Glasgow outfit.

Rangers target move for McLean

As first reported by The Daily Record, Rangers want to make a summer move for Scotland and Norwich City star Kenny McLean. The outlet states that the higher-ups at Ibrox have been watching McLean for some time and Clement and his recruitment team have placed McLean on their list of summer targets.

The 32-year-old has just returned home from a Euro 2024 campaign which saw Scotland exit the competition at the group stage. McLean featured in all three of his nation's games at the tournament, but all of those appearances were from off the bench.

Despite struggling for game time on the international stage, McLean shone at club level last season, featuring in all 46 of Norwich's league games as they lost to Leeds United in the Championship playoff semi-final. It was his exploits for the Canaries that earned McLean the accolade of Norwich's player of the season.

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

The midfielder also earned the praise of his former boss David Wagner over the course of the last campaign. Speaking to the local media the German sang McLean's praises telling the press:

"He has been in this football club quite a while. Maybe he improved. I can only judge from the time I've been here with him, but what I can say is that he's an outstanding athlete, a top trainer, and super competitive."

"He is one of, if not the, most reliable players we have. He is a good person as well."

McLean has two years left on his existing deal with Norwich which also includes an option for a further year. Whilst the Canaries may be unlikely to sell, the 32-year-old's links with Rangers may prove to tip the scales in favour of the Ibrox side.

Speaking to The Athletic back in 2021 McLean spoke about what it would mean to play for his boyhood club, telling the outlet that "for me and my family, it would be pretty special."

Spurs leading race for Euro 2024 star and have now offered him a contract

Looking for more summer arrivals after securing another loan deal for Timo Werner, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly turned their attention towards Euro 2024 and one particular in-demand star.

Tottenham transfer news

The rumours have been coming thick and fast regarding potential incomings at Spurs this summer, which has seen the likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Jonathan David and Marcus Edwards all linked with a move. David would be a particularly interesting watch and an arrival to possibly finally replace Harry Kane a year after his departure to star for Bayern Munich.

LOSC Lille's Jonathan David

The Lille forward enjoyed yet another excellent campaign in Ligue 1 last time out, scoring 26 goals in all competitions, and could now help Ange Postecoglou bridge the gap on the Premier League's top four, freeing Heung-min Son from the role of leading the line in the process. Only time will tell whether the Lilywhites manage to seal such a deal before their opening-day game against Leicester City.

It's not just David that the North London club have their eye on either. According to The Mirror, Spurs are in pole position to sign Lutsharel Geertruida ahead of Liverpool this summer in a deal that could be worth £25m. What's more, Caught Offside have claimed that the Lilywhites have now offered the right-back a contract in a vital step towards a possible move.

Tottenham now prepared to pay £38 million asking price for Euro 2024 star

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 21, 2024

Geertruida came from the bench to help the Netherlands earn a 0-0 draw against France recently and will hope to play more of a part as the tournament goes on, before sealing his future. Given that Postecoglou's side suffered without squad depth last season, Geertruida's ability to play as a right-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder makes him an ideal option to turn to this summer.

"Amazing" Geertruida could be an upgrade on Hojbjerg

Whilst much of the focus has been on potential incomings, Spurs look likely to be bidding farewell to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer in a move that will leave a gaping hole in their squad that Geertruida can instantly fill.

Lutsharel Geertruida for the Netherlands.

Such is the 23-year-old's versatility, Postecoglou would be getting three options in one, whether that be cover for Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven or, indeed, a replacement for Hojbjerg.

Whilst Hojbjerg outperformed his potential replacement off the ball, it's clear that Geertruida's hand in goals is an element that would only benefit Spurs, especially if they remain without a replacement for Kane this summer.

It's a rise that Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig has seen coming since 2022, when he was full of praise for the Feyenoord star, dubbing a particular week in Geertruida's career as "amazing" and the right-back a "gem". Now, it's Spurs who could benefit in abundance. Still just 23 years old, Geetrruida is certainly one to watch this summer.

£35k-a-week player now "preparing to leave" his club as Celtic lie in wait

Celtic are on the hunt for reinforcements this summer despite winning a domestic double, and may have just found a cheap way to strengthen their squad for the new season.

Rodgers' side set for change

After their Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup success, it would be easy for Celtic to rest on their laurels, but change appears inevitable. Matt O'Riley is the subject of interest from across Europe, while Kyogo could also be on the move this summer following the successful loan of Adam Idah, who Brendan Rodgers is keen to sign permanently.

Perhaps most importantly though, Brendan Rodgers' side are on the hunt for a new no.1 goalkeeper after veteran England shot-stopper Joe Hart announced his retirement midway through the season, bowing out with the Scottish Cup success over Rangers.

Though there was concern when Hart was signed, the ex-Manchester City no.1 has been a reliable option between the sticks for Celtic in each of his three seasons with the club, keeping 13 clean sheets in his swansong campaign.

The likes of Liverpool no.2 Caohmin Kelleher and Sunderland's talented Anthony Patterson have been touted among those who could replace Hart at Celtic Park, but both are likely to cost well in excess of £15m, which would represent a significant outlay for Rodgers' side.

As a result, they have reportedly been exploring the free agent market, but have been dealt a blow on that front as Belgian shot-stopper Koen Casteels is set for a move to Saudi Arabia rather than Scotland this summer. Now though, they have been offered a new opportunity to land an exciting prospect between the sticks.

Goalkeeper packing his bags

That comes as Turkish sources report that Celtic are readying a four year contract offer for Manchester United shot-stopper Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir joined the Red Devils last as Andre Onana's deputy, but has made just one appearance under Erik ten Hag and now looks set to leave the club. Said report claims his time in Manchester is "coming to an end" because he didn't find "what he was looking for" at Old Trafford, meaning that the shot-stopper is "preparing to leave" the club this summer despite still being under contract until 2027, a deal which sees him take home £35,000 a week.

Celtic could land "dangerous" partner for Maeda in swoop for 5 ft 10 star

The Hoops are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the full-back this summer.

ByDan Emery May 29, 2024

Now, Celtic are willing to step in and take him to Glasgow, and they are reportedly planning to offer him a four year deal at Celtic Park to get a deal over the line and see him restored to the no.1 position.

No fee is mentioned, but Bayindir is unlikely to command a fee much greater than the 5m euros he was signed for 12 months ago, which could play nicely into Celtic's hands.

It remains to be seen whether a deal is in fact possible, but with Manchester United having put almost everyone up for sale this summer, Bayindir will certainly have his price.

Kris Srikkanth slams MS Dhoni: 'What spark did you see in Kedar Jadhav and Piyush Chawla?'

Kris Srikkanth, the former India captain and chairman of the selection committee, had strong words for MS Dhoni after the Chennai Super Kings succumbed to a seven-wicket loss against the Rajasthan Royals, calling his selections throughout the season as “ridiculous” and “rubbish”.Monday’s defeat was the Super Kings’ seventh of the tournament, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the points table and in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in their history. After the game, Dhoni told the official broadcaster Star Sports that the youngsters in the team had not showed him the kind of “spark” that would have warranted their inclusion in the side.A visibly distraught Srikkanth, however, rubbished all of Dhoni’s claims, taking particular umbrage over the continued selections of Piyush Chawla and Kedar Jadhav, who he had suggested needed a scooter to move around quickly on the field.”I will never accept what Dhoni is saying about this process,” Srikkanth told Star Sports Tamil. “This process he keeps talking about is meaningless. You keep talking about process, process… but the process of selection itself is wrong.”ALSO READ: Why Dhoni and Jadeja got stuck against RoyalsSrikkanth, who was the brand ambassador of the Super Kings franchise during the inaugural IPL season, singled out the case of N Jagadeesan as an example of someone who had not been given a fair chance in the team; Jagadeesan has played just one game all season, scoring 33 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Jadhav, meanwhile, has played eight matches making just 62 runs in total, and has struggled to make an impact.”What is Dhoni’s deal? He says Jagadeesan doesn’t have spark, but does ‘scooter’ Jadhav have that spark? This is ridiculous. I will not accept this answer today. All this talk of process, and Chennai’s tournament itself is over.”Dhoni now says that since the pressure is off, he’ll give the youngsters a chance. Come on, . I don’t understand this rubbish about the process at all. What spark didn’t he see in Jagadeesan? What spark did he see in Jadhav and Piyush Chawla?”Karn Sharma at least took wickets. Chawla simply goes through the motions of bowling, coming on when the game is already lost. Dhoni may be a (big shot) and there is no doubt he is great, but I cannot agree with him or accept this.”
