Michael Neser and Ashton Agar achieve rare double in the space of an hour

Within the space of about an hour on adjacent grounds in Adelaide, Michael Neser and Ashton Agar completed a feat that had not been achieved in the Sheffield Shield for 10 years by scoring a century and taking five-wickets in an innings during the same match.Neser, the Queensland seam-bowling allrounder, was the first to the landmark at Gladys Elphick Park when he brought up his maiden first-class century with consecutive boundaries thrashed through the leg side off Riley Meredith. It followed his opening-day figures of 5 for 32 to help bowl out Tasmania for 250.On the next-door ground at Karen Rolton Oval, Agar was working his way through the Western Australia lower-order and completed his five-wicket haul when he claimed a return catch offered by his brother, Wes. That haul followed Agar’s century which he completed yesterday as part of a 266-run stand with Josh Inglis. Before today, the last player to complete this double in the Sheffield Shield was Mitchell Johnson when he scored 121 not out and claimed 5 for 35 against Victoria at the MCG in November 2010. Before that, Steven Smith bagged the doubled when he made 100 against South Australia then took 7 for 64.Overall, they were the 33rd and 34th occasions of the double happening in Sheffield Shield cricket. Garry Sobers did it four times during the 1960s.Neser is still waiting to earn a Test debut having been a regular part of Australia’s Test squad over the last 18 months while Agar, an established part of the limited-overs squad, played the most recent of his four Tests – which included the famous 98 on debut against England – in 2017.

Enquiry made: West Ham make move to sign new "world-class player" for £10m

West Ham United are interested in bringing a "world-class" player back to the Premier League for around £10m.

West Ham transfer rumours

It is set to be a summer of change at West Ham as they begin life after David Moyes. The Scotsman guided the Hammers to Europa Conference League glory in 2022/23 but parted ways with his long-time club after no silverware and a 9th-place finish in the top flight during 2023/24.

ByBen Browning Jun 1, 2024

Julen Lopetegui has now taken the reigns at the London Stadium and is expected to put his own stamp on Moyes' squad during the summer transfer window, as he said recently:

“I feel very happy, first of all, to be able to be part of the future of this big Club," the Spaniard stated. "We will try to put our stamp on the Club. I feel that we have a fantastic platform. I think the last few years have been very good years to have this base, of course, but my ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this."

Following those comments, West Ham are said to be in talks to sign Palmeiras attacker Luis Guilherme, in a deal that could be worth £30m. Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest and Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi is of interest to the east Londoners, while, Lopetegui personally wants West Ham to sign former player Max Kilman this summer.

West Ham make first move to sign “world-class” player for just £10m

Now, a new name, or rather an old name, has been tipped to return to the Premier League via West Ham this summer. The player in question? Ex-Crystal Palace and Manchester United player, Wilfried Zaha.

According to a report from Fotospor, via Caught Offside, the Hammers have inquired about the possibility of bringing the forward back to England and have "requested information" from his current side, Galatasaray, regarding a potential transfer. Zaha is under contract in Turkey until 2026 and is valued at around £9m by Transfermarkt. However, the report from Fotospor claim an opening offer to Galatasaray for the 31-year-old could be worth £10m.

Wilfried Zaha scores for Crystal Palace against Brentford.

Despite now getting on in years, Zaha is still chipping in with plenty of goal contributions, scoring 10 and assisting five in 42 this past term. Before leaving Palace for Galatasaray, meanwhile, he was able to find the net 90 times and assist 62 for the Eagles across two spells.

The Ivorian international also earned high praise from then-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp back in 2019 when he was still plying his trade in the Premier League.

"They are really good at counter attacks and set pieces, Wilfried Zaha is a world-class player and he gets into a one-on-one situation and we’re one down," Klopp said after Liverpool beat Palace 4-3 at Anfield during the 2018-19 season. Will Zaha be able to repeat that form if he returns to England this summer?

Man Utd advancing in talks to sign £30m forward instead of Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United are thought to be advancing in talks to sign a new £30m forward target instead of Joshua Zirkzee, according to a new report.

Man Utd's links to Zirkzee

The Red Devils have a busy summer ahead of them, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has recently admitted the club needs two or three summer windows to rebuild the squad, making comparisons to Real Madrid and their new signing Kylian Mbappe.

"I don't think the solution is to buy an Mbappe. We are more grassroots than that. One player is not going to solve the problem at Manchester United. The first thing we need to do is build a balanced squad and ultimately maybe top it off with one or two players like Mbappe. It will take two or three summer windows to get to a better place.

"If you compare, since the day that Sir Alex Ferguson and [former United chief executive] David Gill retired 11 seasons ago, Manchester United with Real Madrid, they have consistently performed well and performed where Manchester United should be performing today.

"The net spend on players at Manchester United is £1.1 billion and at Real Madrid, rather surprisingly, it's £200m. If you look at the squads of Real Madrid and United, Real Madrid have seven players that are valued at over €100 million if you look at Transfermarkt. United do not have any players over €70 million or €80 million."

One area where United and Erik ten Hag want to strengthen this summer is in attack, with Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. In fact, reports have suggested that there is a good chance United can hijack AC Milan’s deal for the Netherlands international.

An alternative target is Lille’s Jonathan David, and with contact already made over a possible transfer, a new update has now emerged.

Jonathan David to Man Utd update

According to HITC, Man Utd are ‘advancing in talks’ to sign David this summer, with Old Trafford scouts eyeing the Canada international for 12 months.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham are also credited with an interest, but it is only United who are advancing in discussions.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

The report suggests that it looks to be one of David or Zirkzee at Old Trafford, saying: “The Red Devils have also engaged in talks with Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee with HITC understanding that United want a ‘significant alternative’ to Rasmus Hojlund and both David and Zirkzee represent that.”

David is thought to be available for a fee in the region of £30m, with the 24-year-old currently at the Copa America with his nation but ready to depart his club with one year left on his deal.

A move for either forward will be one to keep an eye on, with Zirkzee’s release clause slightly higher than £30m, so both attackers appear to be in the club’s price range.

Raphinha has been revived at Barcelona – now he must lift Brazil as struggling Selecao search for answers in World Cup qualifying

The former Leeds winger struggled for a long time to prove his worth in Catalunya, but he's now flourishing under Hansi Flick

Ronaldinho could take no more. Brazil's dour draw with the United States in their final Copa America warm-up game had tipped him over the edge. Ronaldinho resigned from supporting the Selecao.

"That's it folks, I've had enough," the World Cup winner wrote on Instagram. "This is a sad moment for those who love Brazilian soccer. It's getting hard to find the spirit to watch the games. This is perhaps one of the worst teams in recent years, it has no respectable leaders, only average players for the majority.

"I've been following football since I was a kid, long before I thought about becoming a player, and I've never seen a situation as bad as this. Lack of love for the shirt, lack of grit and the most important of all: football.

"I'll repeat, our performance has been one of the worst things I've ever seen. Such a shame. I therefore declare my resignation. I will not watch any CONMEBOL Copa America game, nor celebrate any victory."

Such a stinging attack from arguably the most spectacularly skilful footballer Brazil devastated the players, and Raphinha in particular. The winger considered Ronaldinho not only an idol but a friend.

"It has been a hard blow for us," Raphinha admitted to reporters. "We need encouragement and constructive criticism, not just negativity. We are working hard to bring glory back to Brazil."

Raphinha's effort certainly can't be faulted. Few players in world football are working harder than he is right now – or playing better at club level. The big question is, though, whether the wonderfully determined character playing a key role in Barcelona's dramatic revival this season can also breathe new life into Brazil during the international break…

Surviving in 'The Wild West'

Raphinha has always had to deal with doubt and disappointment. Unlike most players that reach the pinnacle of the profession, he wasn't a childhood prodigy picked up by a top team at a young age. Consequently, he was forced to prove his worth in Brazil's (in)famous varzea tournaments, "the home of the rejects" as he put it himself; an unforgiving arena for those still trying desperately to get an academy contract.

"It really is The Wild West, man," he told in 2021. "You play on clay. Burning heat. Dust and sand. Someone will bring a ball from home. Often there are no nets, just the posts. Bibs? Forget about it. One team just plays shirtless.

"And these players are really the rejects, man. They play with anger. They play to survive. They play like their lives depend on it… You would often see the bosses in the community stand around the pitch with guns. You could be about to score when a random gunshot would go off. Let me tell you, it can kind of put you off! The fireworks too, man. That’s why I always say that if you can play in the varzea games, you can play anywhere. A big European final? Don’t care. A stadium with 90,000 people? Bring it on.

"I'm still very proud that I played in so many varzea tournaments. And honestly, I loved it. Those games made me so tough. When I play now, I want to be booed. I want the pressure and the intimidation. That's what gets me going."

AdvertisementGetty Images'Thought about leaving'

Joining Barcelona, then, shouldn't have come as such a shock to Raphinha's system. But he struggled with the intense scrutiny. He felt the weight of the jersey, and it showed.

He scored just once in his first 17 appearances in all competitions for Barca, and contributed only four assists. Perhaps even more significantly, the player that tormented full-backs in the Premier League appeared almost scared to take players on in La Liga.

He looked and felt inhibited. Shockingly, a player forged in such a harsh environment in Porto Alegre felt like quitting Catalunya just months after arriving.

"At the beginning, it was very challenging," the €60 million (£50m/$66m) signing from Leeds United confessed in an interview with . "My adaptation to the club was difficult.

"I knew it was something that had to happen, but not that it would be so difficult on a personal level. This moved my head a little, I sometimes thought about leaving – not at the end of the season, but in the first half of the season. Barca is a huge club and it is normal for it to be difficult [to adapt]. But I wasn't used to that [kind of struggle]."

Getty ImagesThe tie that changed everything

Raphinha began to settle after the resumption of play following the mid-season break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and his form improved. However, he was still in and out of Xavi's team, with the former Barcelona boss regularly picking Ousmane Dembele on the right flank ahead of Raphinha.

The Brazilian's hopes of becoming a regular in his preferred position didn't even improve after Dembele defected to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023. Why? Because of the emergence of a truly outstanding right winger in Lamine Yamal. However, it was at this point that Raphinha's resilience really came to the fore.

When Barcelona played Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League, the continually questioned attacker belatedly proved that he had not only the talent but the character to play at the very highest level. Although the Blaugrana were beaten, Raphinha scored three times across the two legs – and those goals proved a turning point.

"I think it was a tie that helped me to be much more confident and believe in myself much more," he told his club's official media channel. "I also think that after those games, people have been able to trust me a little more and appreciate what I can bring to the team."

There was still incessant talk of a transfer, though, because while he no longer wanted to leave Barcelona, the likelihood of him being forced out for financial reasons had only increased.

(C)GettyImagesNo room for Raphinha?

The upturn in his form and fortunes, during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign in particular, essentially put Raphinha in the shop window. As one of the few very valuable assets on Barca's books, Raphinha became the player it made most sense to sell, particularly as club president Joan Laporta was intent on signing two of Spain's stars from Euro 2024: attacking midfielder Dani Olmo and left winger Nico Williams. If both deals went through, there would be simply no room for Raphinha on Barca's balance sheet.

In the end, though, only Olmo arrived, and even his game time has been restricted, by registration problems and injury issues. To say that Raphinha has taken advantage of his unexpected stay of execution would be a massive understatement.

In 11 outings in all competitions so far this season, Raphinha has created 39 chances – more than any other player across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues, including Bukayo Saka (34), Vinicius Jr (28), Florian Wirtz (26) and Cole Palmer (25) – and racked up five assists.

Rather significantly, he's also contributed six goals, after managing only 10 in each of his first two seasons at Barca, and is now part of the most prolific front three in Europe alongside Yamal and Robert Lewandowski.

Jamie Leweling is Germany's unlikely hero! Lucky winger scores debut winner against toothless Netherlands as Julian Nagelsmann's side stay top of Nations League group

The 23-year-old was a surprise presence in the starting XI having only been called up due to an injury to Jamal Musiala. He then got the nod after Deniz Undav was also ruled out with an injury. Nevertheless, it took just two minutes for Leweling to make an impact as he smashed into Netherlands' net, but it was disallowed following a lengthy VAR review.

Germany's early dominance diminished as the first half wore on, but the Dutch were barely able to get the ball beyond the halfway line and managed to stay level thanks to some desperate defending and Verbruggen.

The visitors held onto the ball for almost three full minutes in a hopeful start to the second half but they were toothless against Germany's defence and didn't manage a shot until Denzel Dumfries' wayward header in the 56th minute.

Unsurprisingly, it was Germany who broke the deadlock when a failed clearance rolled in Leweling's path and he lashed into the top corner.

Netherlands finally showed some spark in the last 15 minutes when Xavi Simons found space outside the box and unleashed a shot that struck the bar. In the 90th minute, Donyell Malen's shot from outside the box forced an excellent save from Oliver Baumann, making his debut at 34 years of age, as the hosts held out for the win.

Stuttgart forward Leweling got the nod from Julian Nagelsmann due to injuries in the Germany squad but showed he was worthy of his place in the starting XI, seeing an early goal ruled out for a marginal offside before he broke the deadlock in a dull match.

    THE BIG LOSER

Dutch defender Micky van de Ven looked reckless at centre-back and put his fellow defenders under pressure throughout the game. His attempt to block Leweling for the goal was terrible.

Wolves eyeing £13m Neto heir who could be a "Saka rival” for England

Wolverhampton Wanderers concluded the 2023/24 campaign having comfortably finished 14th in the Premier League, though, Gary O'Neil was aware that his side had petered out and that signings were needed.

The caveat? Wolves aren't the all-spending machine that certain other clubs prove to be on English shores. Though they are smart, and shrewd, and have last summer's exodus to thank as PSR's ominous shadow stays well away from Molineux.

That said, Wolves have beaten off competition to close in on a deal with Braga for the £13m signing of Rodrigo Gomes, a 20-year-old winger who had been courted by Atletico Madrid but has decided to foster his talents at the English club.

Rodrigo Gomes

With an air of inevitability that the £60m-rated Pedro Neto will be sold, wanted by Manchester City and Newcastle United, Wolves may well seek to strengthen further on the flanks.

Wolves already eyeing next deal

According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Wolves are considering a swoop for Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior, aged 20, as plans continue vis-a-vis Neto's successor, should the Portugal international leave.

Aston Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on a deal too, and given that the Old Lady would be willing to cash in for just €15m (£13m) as the English winger enters the final year of his contract, it might represent a fine opportunity for Wolves to enjoy a bargain.

Why Samuel Iling-Junior could replace Pedro Neto

Wolves might find a host of competitors for Iling-Junior's signature but if Neto is indeed to be sold, the promise of a regular starting berth may prove to be too good to turn down.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has remarked that he could become a “[Bukayo] Saka rival” for England in the future, with the versatile winger blessed with immense physical strengths and a growing dynamism in his craft to mirror that of the Arsenal phenom, whom Mikel Arteta said "does everything right".

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

Cutting his teeth with Juventus after rejecting a scholarship deal at Chelsea as a youth, the nifty winger enjoyed a promising campaign in Turin, scoring once and assisting twice across 27 matches in all competitions, albeit starting only four times in Serie A.

Hailed for his "explosive" qualities by Mattinson, Iling-Junior's dynamism and athletic style suggest that he would suit Premier League football, in his homeland, very well indeed, ranking among the top 9% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 6% for shot-creating actions and the top 10% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

And for a portion of the price.

Sir Alex Ferguson personally pushing for 52 y/o to be Man Utd manager

Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly pushing hard for a 52-year-old friend of his to replace Erik ten Hag as Red Devils boss this summer.

Man Utd manager latest

The managerial situation at Old Trafford is continuing to rumble on, with Ten Hag seemingly not knowing if he is being retained or moved on in the coming weeks. He has been under pressure for some time, but United's FA Cup triumph has arguably made it harder for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to sack him, having won a trophy in each of his two seasons in charge.

England manager Gareth Southgate appears to be a top target for INEOS, but deciding to bring him in could be met with plenty of negativity, not least because he finds himself under pressure with the Three Lions heading into Euro 2024, following his side's 1-0 defeat at home to Iceland last Friday.

Ratcliffe is also believed to have met Thomas Tuchel with regard to replacing Ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat, but the German has since decided against taking charge, instead choosing to have a breather after his stint at Bayern Munich.

Arguably the other standout option currently is Mauricio Pochettino, who left Chelsea by mutual consent at the end of the season, and who was seen as a front-runner to come in at United back in 2022, following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sir Alex Ferguson wants 52-year-old as manager

According to a new update from HITC, Ferguson wants Pochettino to be Manchester United's next manager, replacing Ten Hag this summer in the process.

The report states that the legendary Scot "has the ear of" Ratcliffe, and is "very close to Pochettino". It goes on to add that he "continues to press the case for the Argentine to be given the chance to take charge – having previously missed out to Ten Hag for the United job in 2022".

Like so many of United's rumoured targets, the jury is out a little with Pochettino, who doesn't quite have the reputation he did during his Tottenham days, when he guided the north Londoners to the 2019 Champions League final. Since then, the Argentine hasn't exactly excelled at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, despite spending lots of money in that time.

That being said, the 52-year-old is a superior option to Southgate, considering he has proven himself far more at club level, shining with Southampton before his move to Spurs and also winning one Ligue 1 title with PSG.

The fact that Ferguson has reportedly endorsed Pochettino as the standout option to come in and be Ten Hag's successor has to be seen as a good thing, although it is worth remembering that the United icon liked the idea of David Moyes as his replacement back in 2013, in a move that didn't work out at all.

There has been talk of Greenwood pursuing an international career with Jamaica, as the Caribbean nation hold an interest in bringing him on board – with former Manchester United and England coach Steve McClaren already working as their new boss.

Rudolph Speid, chairman of Jamaica’s Football Federation technical committee, has told of efforts to get Greenwood registered with FIFA: “We are still trying to get him to come but things are complex and not easy to get across the line. You can see that we have become more confident on the ball and we are having more possession. We are getting the results, we recently finished top of the table in the Concacaf Nations League, qualified for the Gold Cup and that’s the most we can ask for at this point.”
