Patidar's century and lower-order runs put MP on course for maiden Ranji title

Mumbai were 49 behind at stumps on day four after MP secured a 162-run first-innings lead

Rajat Patidar’s 122 propelled Madhya Pradesh to over 500•PTI

Madhya Pradesh are nearly there. But no one from the team or from the periphery is ready to celebrate just yet. That is because there is still one full day, offering a minimum of 95 overs left in the Ranji final. Mumbai trail by 49, with eight wickets in hand, but must find a way to not just wipe out the deficit but also get ahead, and then take the ten remaining wickets to pull off a coup. It’s improbable but Mumbai have nothing to lose, and it’s this fearlessness they will try and carry forward on Sunday. Prithvi Shaw’s robust second-innings 44 has given them just a glimmer, but there’s a mountain to climb. That is because Rajat Patidar and MP’s lower order extended Mumbai’s agony on the field to 177.2 overs in which they made 536, securing a first-innings lead of 162. Patidar was the third centurion of the innings, after Yash Dubey and Shubham Sharma. It was also the most enterprising of the three, an innings full of authority, class, and a slice of luck on 52, when he was reprieved off a no-ball on the third day.Having shut shop after the reprieve until stumps on Friday, Patidar restored normalcy under overcast skies on Saturday, picking off runs with ease and giving a crowd of around 1500 people something to cheer about. Apart from ensuring the bad balls were put away, Patidar respected the bowling and ensured Mumbai weren’t handed any chance of a comeback despite striking twice in the morning.Aditya Shrivastava was out to a short ball from Mohit Avasthi, which was grabbed on the rebound at slip by Sarfaraz Khan, while Tushar Deshpande sent Akshat Raghuwanshi’s stumps cartwheeling with a superb in-ducker he should’ve been playing forward to.Parth Sahani, the debutant, was reprieved early when Shaw put down a tough chance at slip, but he was out lbw soon after to Shams Mulani, the left-arm spinner. It was largely down to Patidar from there on to steer the lower order. When Sahani became the sixth wicket to fall, MP were just 56 ahead, but Patidar found an able ally in allrounder Saransh Jain, who hung around to support him for as long as he was around, and then brought out his shots to make a maiden half-century to extend Mumbai’s misery. In all, the last four wickets added106. Mulani finished with a five-for after 63.2 overs of toil taking his wickets tally this season to 42.Needing to start aggressively, Mumbai lived up to their side of the bargain as MP quickly went on the defensive, mindful of cutting out Shaw’s scoring areas, especially the point region. Without Yashasvi Jaiswal, who spent large parts of the day off the field due to an ankle niggle, Mumbai opened with wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore, and he was off the blocks quickly too.It was Shaw who played some jaw-dropping shorts, like the swat for six over long-on, but he also rode his luck, with Gaurav Yadav failing to latch on to a mistimed pull to fine leg. Gaurav also reprieved Armaan Jaffer early in his innings but hit back to dismiss Shaw right at the close when the batter toe-ended a wide delivery to cover.Towards the end, MP bowled defensively, with spinners landing deliveries outside leg and pacers bowling wide outside off. For a team on the cusp of history, MP appeared just a tad nervy, even if they were within their rights to imply such tactics. To Mumbai’s credit, they found ways to play around it and give themselves a window of opportunity, however slim it may be.Tonight’s sleep or the lack thereof could either jangle MP or relax them to such an extent that Sunday is a mere formality. It’s one team fighting the odds to try and gun for No. 42, the other their first.

Man Utd and Amorim hold talks for new attacker; move may happen this month

Marcus Rashford looks set to leave Manchester United this month, and the club could already have his replacement in mind, as they hold transfer talks with a new attacker, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd transfer news

There are over two weeks left in this January transfer window, and Ruben Amorim will be hoping the club can do some sort of business between now and the deadline. Despite money being tight for the Red Devils, it looks as though the club have transfer targets in mind should they be able to move some fringe players out first.

Man Utd seriously consider "superstar" deal after offer to sign him for £0

INEOS are weighing up whether to take advantage of a transfer situation that has been offered to them.

4 ByBrett Worthington Jan 14, 2025

One player who they hold a serious interest in is Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes. The 22-year-old is a player Amorim knows well from his time at Sporting CP, and the Portuguese is keen on reuniting with the speedster at Old Trafford, as he looks to solve United’s left wing-back issue.

United have been in talks with Mendes over a possible switch, and a new report has stated that they want to accelerate those talks, as Real Madrid and Manchester City are also interested in a move.

As well as looking at Mendes, the Premier League giants are also seriously considering moving for striker Jonathan David after being offered the chance to sign him. David is a free agent in the summer, and his services were offered to United for when his deal expires. The Red Devils are said to be considering a move for the forward but face competition from the likes of Newcastle, Liverpool and Juventus.

Man Utd hold talks for new playmaker – Romano

The transfer news doesn’t stop there for Amorim’s side, as Fabrizio Romano reports that Manchester United have held talks over the signing of Nene Dorgeles from RB Salzburg, and a move could happen this month.

The 22-year-old has been on the books of the Austrian side since January 2021, when he joined from Malian outfit Guidars FC. Dorgeles has enjoyed a few loan spells during his time with Salzburg, his last being a season-long loan deal at Belgian side KVC Westerlo, where he scored eight goals and provided four assists in 29 JPL games.

Since then, he has been a key player for Salzburg, scoring plenty of goals and providing several chances for his teammates. His performances in Austria and in Europe have now caught the attention of United, who are monitoring the attacker after adding him to their list of targets.

Romano states that a move for Dorgeles could happen either this month or in the summer transfer window, but either way, talks have been held to get an understanding of the price and package for a deal to happen. Dorgeles could potentially be seen as a replacement for Rashford due to his ability to play anywhere besides or behind a striker, as the England star looks closer to joining Serie A side AC Milan.

Smith moves on from Khawaja run out mix-up

Steven Smith insists there is no lingering fallout from his mid-wicket mix-up with Usman Khawaja after his fiery first Test dismissal against Sri Lanka.Smith created headlines last week when he gestured back at Khawaja and stormed off the field after being run out for six in Galle. The incident drew criticism back home in Australia, including from former captains Mark Taylor and Ian Chappell.Chappell in particular was harsh on the right-hander, claiming he should have been in better check of his emotions as a vice-captain on the field. But Smith insisted he and Khawaja had immediately moved on, and he was more frustrated at his own dismissal.”I hate getting run out. I think anyone does,” Smith said on Wednesday when asked if he had reflected on the situation. “Particularly given the [tough] conditions and gifting them a wicket. As one of the most experienced players I was pretty upset.”That happens in the game. I got over it pretty quickly. I had to keep moving forward and that is part of the game.”I spoke to Uz straight after and he was pretty chilled. Mix-ups happen, we keep moving on.”What Smith is desperate for is more time in the middle. He missed the final three one-day internationals in Sri Lanka with a quad injury and only faced 11 balls in his one innings in Galle before his run out.The former captain batted through another lengthy net session on Wednesday, working hard on facing left-arm spin with throwdowns from former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori.Smith employs a different approach to most Australians against the spinners, only using the sweep when the ball spins back into him. He was Australia’s leading run-scorer on the last tour of Sri Lanka, relying on a fast-feet method to try and unsettle the bowlers.”I’m not a huge sweeper so I prefer to run down the wicket and get them off their lengths that way or come back into my crease,” Smith said. “Really it’s about not getting stuck on the crease with the ball spinning into me.”If I’m doing that well and fast on my feet, I usually feel pretty good.”Australia expect the wicket to spin just as much in the second Test in Galle starting Friday, with Sri Lanka adding more spinners to their squad.Smith had attempted to lead a more positive team with the bat when he captained Australia’s 3-0 loss in 2016, only for the side to be tentative in defeat. But that approach has been put into far better effect on this tour, as Australia scored at a rapid rate in the first Test.”It’s about having courage in the way guys are playing,” Smith said. “It’s good we all play a little bit differently.”There’s not the same continuity, so bowlers have to change their lengths a bit and when they’re doing that in a partnership you can cruise along quite freely.”

Man City now preparing £66m bid to sign "amazing" priority target

Manchester City are now preparing an offer for an “amazing” Premier League player who is now among their priority targets, according to a report.

Man City's torrid form

Pep Guardiola is going through his first real bad spell as manager of Man City, with his side winning just one of their last 12 matches in all competitions, and there is no sign of him being able to turn it around any time soon.

City fell to their third loss on the bounce when they visited Aston Villa on Saturday, and former goalkeeper Shay Given was particularly critical of the side’s performance, saying:

“They let all these young players leave the club and now he’s in a real rut, Pep Guardiola. Their legs are gone, they couldn’t match Villa physically, couldn’t match them tactically. They were miles off it so what happens next? That’s the question.”

Man City submit opening bid to sign "energetic" £58m midfielder in 2025

Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big fan.

1 ByDominic Lund Dec 22, 2024

The only solution on the horizon for Guardiola is to be active in the January transfer window when it opens in just over a week, and the manager has set his sights on Atalanta midfielder Ederson dos Santos as one of his main targets.

With Rodri sidelined, City have experienced a significant dip in form which is now becoming a real crisis, so it is clear to see why Guardiola is so keen on a new central midfielder, but he is also looking at strengthening in other areas.

According to reports from Spain, a €80m (£66m) offer is being prepared by Man City for West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus after his impressive displays, in which he has been utilised in a number of different attacking positions.

The Ghanaian is capable of playing in attacking midfield, out wide, and even as a forward, and he has caught City’s eye to such an extent that he is now among Guardiola’s priority targets. West Ham have no interest in sanctioning the 24-year-old’s departure, but a huge offer could prove to be impossible to turn down.

Man City need to strengthen

Given that performances have been way below the standard for some time now, the only way out of this situation could be to bring in new reinforcements, and a new central midfielder is definitely required amid Rodri’s absence.

That said, Jack Grealish and Savinho have hardly set the world alight either, with the former providing zero goals and just two assists in all competitions, so a new winger could also be needed.

Kudus is particularly impressive at dribbling, ranking in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers, and he provided 14 goal contributions in the Premier League last season.

Lauded as “amazing” by the media, the 24-year-old has proven himself in the Premier League, so he could be a fantastic signing for Man City, but it remains to be seen whether they are willing to fork out what would need to be a huge sum of money to get a deal over the line.

Nottinghamshire fall short of knock-outs as Dan Christian says farewell

Durham beaten as Duckett, Clarke combine but hopes fade for hosts

ECB Reporters Network01-Jul-2022Nottinghamshire 184 for 6 (Duckett 53*, Clarke 51) beat Durham 183 for 8 by four wickets Nottinghamshire Outlaws’ last desperate hopes of a seventh successive T20 quarter-final berth finally vanished despite a comfortable victory over Durham Jets by four wickets in the Vitality Blast at Trent Bridge. Amongst other things, they needed a tie, no less, in Leicester to retain any hope but Leicester just refused to oblige. It was at least a rousing farewell for Dan Christian, their departing veteran captain who led the Outlaws to T20 glory in 2017 and 2020. He could revel in watching 51 from 30 balls for Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett’s unbeaten 53 from 34 that helped bring success at the gallop with three overs to spare.Christian’s fellow Australian and opposite number, Ashton Turner, threatened to upstage things earlier with a rapid 33 as Durham’s third wicket added 54 in five overs but Steven Mullaney removed him and two new batters in four balls as the Jets backfired. From 98 for five with 51 balls to come, Michael Jones, the opener, reached 41 until brilliantly caught on the mid-wicket rope by Mullaney off Jake Ball and Durham finished with 183 for eight, late-order hitting bringing 70 from the final six overs. It proved far from enough. The evening had started painfully when the opening delivery, from Ball, cut back to strike Graham Clark flush in the box, flooring him and causing a three-minute delay for treatment. Durham, already out of quarter-final contention, chose to bat but lost Clark, slicing his drive for 14, and Ollie Robinson, who skied a swipe to the keeper, as Ball conceded only four in the fifth over. But in the later charge, Brydon Carse, batting at No.7, was dropped off Ball when twelve before surging to 25 from 17 balls when becoming Lyndon James’s maiden T20 scalp, whilst Ned Eckersley finished unbeaten with 23 from a dozen balls. Andrew Tye hit two sixes in his not-out 13.Even by the second over of the reply, however, with Liam Trevaskis taken for 19, the target seeemed less than daunting. The left-arm spinner had revenge of sorts when Alex Hales top-edged a sweep to go for 26 but the Outlaws had struck as many sixes in the reply’s first 47 balls as the Jets managed in their entire innings.Clarke, who had creamed 53 with Hales in 26 balls for the first wicket on a typically good Nottingham pitch with short boundaries inviting mayhem, then added another 55 in 35 balls with Duckett.Eventually miscueing against a leg-break from the Australian, Nathan Sowter, Clarke gave way to Mullaney, another victim of spin when soon stumped by Robinson off Trevaskis next over. James arrived to send his third and fifth balls for six off Carse and at the end of an over that cost 16, only 46 were needed from the final 42 balls.James fell smiting for 20 but, maintaining the tempo, Tom Moores hit his first four balls for boundaries until magnificently caught by Sowter who took the ball jumping on the boundary, threw it up before crossing the rope then grasped it again back on the field. Dramatic, indeed. But not enough, even though Sol Budinger fell stumped with three needed.

West Ham now chasing "aggressive" £12m Championship midfielder

West Ham United are now chasing a midfielder after his impressive performances in the Championship this season, according to a report.

West Ham keen to strengthen in January

One of West Ham’s main priorities for the January transfer window is signing a new striker, in light of Michail Antonio being ruled out for the foreseeable future due to his involvement in a car crash.

However, any business is likely to hinge upon offloading Niclas Fullkrug during the early stages of the transfer window, with the German’s move to the London Stadium not panning out as planned.

The Hammers are closely following Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani, who is expected to leave the French club this winter, and talks have also been held over a deal for Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Striker is not the only position in which Julen Lopetegui is keen to strengthen, however, having approached Juventus to discuss a potential deal for midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, who is likely to leave the Serie A club this month.

Another target from much closer to home is also now emerging, with The Daily Mail reporting the Irons are now chasing Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, who is currently out on loan at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

West Ham have checked on the 21-year-old, who has caught the eye due to his impressive performances in the second tier this season, amassing five goal contributions. Charles moved to Southampton from Manchester City in a deal worth £12m last year, and while he struggled to make an impression at St. Mary’s, his form for the Owls is attracting the attention of a number of clubs.

Atalanta scouts are said to have watched the midfielder last month, while Leicester City are also named as an interested party, so there could be competition for his signature if the Hammers decide to pursue a deal this month.

Charles impressing for Sheffield Wednesday

Former Southampton boss Russell Martin was initially planning for the former Man City man to be an important player, saying: “I know Flynn (Downes) has played in front of him, but when he has come on from the bench he has had a really good impact on the games.

“We have really good competition in the midfield. Shea wants to win. He is aggressive and he breaks up play. He will be a really important player for us.”

However, the youngster’s move to St. Mary’s did not work out, being sent out on loan this season, but he has certainly started to make an impression for Sheffield Wednesday. The Northern Ireland international is a key player for the Owls, starting every game in the Championship, and he recently picked up two assists despite playing in a defensive role in a 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough.

Over the past year, Charles ranks in the 93rd percentile for tackles per 90, showcasing his defensive qualities, and his performances for Wednesday indicate he is ready to move back to the Premier League.

Mary Earps facing uphill battle to be England No.1 – but Michelle Agyemang is a Euro 2025 wildcard: Lionesses winners & losers as Sarina Wiegman's side impress and disappoint in Nations League clashes with Belgium

There was plenty to learn from the European champions' April camp, which produced two extremely contrasting results against the same opponent

Four days is a long time in football – or apparently so, given that was the time between England's 5-0 demotion of Belgium in Bristol and a dismal 3-2 defeat to the same opponent in Leuven. That second scoreline flattered the Lionesses, too, whose defending was so dreadful on Tuesday night that they were 3-0 down with less than half an hour played.

After so many positives in the Friday fixture – which produced five different goal-scorers, a comfortable clean sheet and first senior international strikes for both Keira Walsh, winning her 83rd cap, and Aggie Beever-Jones, racking up just her fourth – the rematch changed the entire reflection of this international window for England.

Having sat in pole position in their Nations League group, the Lionesses have now slipped to second and put unnecessary pressure on their final two games, which will come shortly after the club season in Europe concludes. First, they host a Portugal side that held them to a 1-1 draw in February, then they travel to Spain to take on the world champions. If they want to be in the best possible position come the 2027 Women's World Cup draw, and have a shot at actually winning the Nations League itself, positive results are vital. To get them, Sarina Wiegman's side will have to be much better than they were in Belgium, and much more like they were at home.

Fortunately, despite the doom and gloom this camp ended on, there were some real positives for the England boss to take out of these two games. Most of those, of course, came from the 5-0 victory, but there were also a couple in defeat, especially as a teenage talent boldly announced herself as a star for the future – and possibly a late contender for Wiegman's squad for this summer's European Championships.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from the Lionesses' April camp…

AFPLOSER: Sarina Wiegman

Wiegman came into this camp with several key players missing. All of Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood and Georgia Stanway are sidelined after having knee surgeries, with the latter pair leaving England limited at left-back and in the deeper midfield roles in particular. However, that list of absentees only grew over the course of the past few days.

On Friday, just before the first game against Belgium, the in-form Chloe Kelly had to withdraw from the squad. At the halfway point of that match, Lauren James limped off with a hamstring issue that would force her to miss Tuesday's game in Leuven. A day later, Wiegman lost star striker Alessia Russo as well, who returned to Arsenal after picking up a problem on Friday.

It left England limited in Belgium as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat – but the greater concern will be if any of this trio are out for longer than just a game or two. The Euros are just three months away and Wiegman will absolutely not want to be sweating on the fitness of any more key players.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER: Hannah Hampton

It felt significant that, after starting Hannah Hampton in Friday's win over Belgium, Wiegman stuck with the Chelsea shot-stopper for the third game in a row on Tuesday. Prior to this camp, she and Mary Earps had almost equally alternated reps in between the sticks since the start of 2024, Hampton playing eight of 14 games and Earps the other six. However, that scale feels like it has slowly, and subtly, been tilting in favour of the 24-year-old and, this week, Wiegman confirmed as much.

Asked outright by if Hampton was now her No.1 goalkeeper, Wiegman replied: "At this moment, she’s a little bit ahead. We have two world-class goalkeepers so it’s been a really hard decision. But at this moment, Hannah is a little bit ahead."

It was a surprise to hear her say as much but also, in a way, not surprising. After all, Hampton has started to accrue more opportunities and she's regularly taken them, even if she might've hoped to have done a little better with some of the goals on Tuesday. With just three months to go until the Euros, the Chelsea star is in pole position to start for the defending champions.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Mary Earps

Where does that leave Earps, then? There are just two more competitive fixtures before the Euros begins, plus any pre-tournament friendlies that the Lionesses partake in. If Hampton is to be Wiegman's No.1, one would imagine she will get the majority of the game time as July gets closer and closer. And this is the goalkeeper position we're talking about. It's not a role where Earps can just take opportunities to shine from the bench.

That said, it'd be a real shock if the Paris Saint-Germain star doesn't get another look-in before the Euros comes around. Wiegman's comments were by no means definitive on the No.1 shirt, with Hampton just ahead in the race. "If she gets a sniff back in that goal, she'll [do] everything to keep it," Ian Wright said of Earps on , and he's right. The 32-year-old has been an incredible servant under Wiegman and has put in some cracking performances for England, with her clean sheet against the United States one very recent, and very good, example. She is going to be absolutely chomping at the bit to take whatever chances she gets – the only issue is that there might not be many left at this point.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Beth Mead

When England won the Euros back in 2022, Beth Mead was the star of the show. Six goals and five assists in just six games saw her scoop up the individual accolades, both from the tournament and in the months that followed. However, going into the Lionesses' defence of that title, she finds herself in fierce competition for a place in Wiegman's starting XI.

The wide areas in this England squad are stacked. Hemp, James, Kelly and Beever-Jones have been battling for those spots throughout the season, with Jess Park, Fran Kirby and Grace Clinton among the other names who can, and have, played there. But while Hemp and Kelly missed this camp due to injuries, and James dropped out midway through, Mead started both games and was among England's most impressive performers on each occasion.

On Friday, the Arsenal forward linked up exceptionally well with Lucy Bronze to absolutely destroy Belgium down their left-hand side, with her unlucky to leave that game with just one assist and no goal. In Leuven, things didn't go to plan for the Lionesses in the same way, but Mead still managed to stand out as one of their better players. It all amounted to a good week in her own personal charge to be in Wiegman's line-up come that opening game at the Euros.

Mumbai Indians to organise three-week tour of England for their uncapped players

Tilak Varma and other uncapped Indian players will play at least ten T20 games against top club sides in England•BCCI

After a forgettable IPL 2022 campaign, Mumbai Indians are all set to start their preparations in earnest for the next edition, with a three-week exposure tour of England in July for their uncapped Indian players.Apart from enjoying training at various state-of-the-art facilities, the Indian youngsters of Mumbai will be playing at least ten T20 games against top club sides across multiple counties.”Tilak Varma, Kumar Kartikeya, Ramandeep Singh, Hrithik Shokeen are some of the players who will get exposure playing against top T20 club sides in trying conditions,” an IPL insider privy to the development told PTI. “Arjun Tendulkar, who is also in the UK and South African youngster Dewald Brevis are also likely to join the touring party.”The Mumbai support staff, including head coach Mahela Jayawardene, will be in England to oversee the progress of the Indian players.”Look, the Indian domestic season has come to an end,” the source said. “While the top players like skipper Rohit Sharma, premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be now on the road with the national team, our international stars will also be busy with their respective commitments. The ones who need to be monitored are our younger crop of players as they won’t be having any match practice for three and half months before the next domestic season starts.”So effectively, we can’t call it a pre-season trip as IPL is still nine months away. But it is trying to monitor the progress of our core group of youngsters going forward.”For this trip though, Mumbai don’t need any BCCI permission unless the team is playing exhibition games against other franchises or overseas T20 sides.”This trip isn’t a commercial one where there will be tickets sold or the match will be broadcast on a particular channel or streamed on some app. Since the trip isn’t a revenue generator, we don’t need to apply for any permission from BCCI.”We are only taking those players to the UK who are not associated with any national team activities, not summoned for any of the BCCI conducted camps, and not playing in any league (like TNPL).”Players likely to go for the UK trip: Tilak Varma, Kumar Kartikeya, Hrithik Shokeen, Mayank Markande, Rahul Buddhi, Ramandeep Singh, Anmolpreet Singh, Basil Thampi, Murugan Ashwin, Aryan Juyal, Akash Medhwal, Arshad Khan, Arjun Tendulkar, Dewald Brevis
