Arsenal's 9 most farcical red cards under Mikel Arteta – ranked

Since Mikel Arteta took over as Arsenal manager in December 2019, the Gunners have received more than their fair share of red cards.

While many may have been just, there have been a fair few that have been no doubt controversial, whether you look at them through the angry eyes of a begrudged Arsenal fan or a neutral.

Here, we’ve broken down the most controversial of the bunch, starting way back in 2020.

Every Premier League team's worst referee

No prizes for guessing which referee Arsenal would love to avoid the most…

1 ByStephan Georgiou Oct 2, 2024 9 Eddie Nketiah v Leicester, 2019/20 Referee: Chris Kavanagh

Eddie Nketiah was shown a red card following a video assistant referee (VAR) review during Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Leicester City back in July 2020.

The Englishman went in hard on a 50/50 challenge with Foxes defender James Justin, leading dangerously with his studs showing and connecting with Justin just below the knee.

Emiliano Martinez, Arsenal’s keeper at the time, called the decision “harsh” because he felt Nketiah had slipped, and the Gunners even tried to appeal the decision. Perhaps expectedly, they failed.

8 Gabriel v Man City, 2021/22 Referee: Stuart Attwell

Gabriel was sent off for a second bookable offence as Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day in 2022.

His first booking was awarded for scuffing up the penalty spot after Granit Xhaka committed a clumsy challenge on Bernardo Silva in the box.

Not long after, Gabriel got his second yellow for dragging down his now-teammate Gabriel Jesus as he received the ball on his chest and turned into the Gunners’ half. It was certainly on the soft side, and on another day with a different referee, he may well have escaped a second caution.

Gabriel later said on social media that the red card and defeat were “hard to accept”.

7 Gabriel v Southampton, 2020/21 Referee: Paul Tierney

A year prior to being sent off against Manchester City, Gabriel was shown red in almost the exact same circumstances. While already on a yellow, the Brazilian defender brought down Theo Walcott near the halfway line after being turned by the Southampton forward.

Clearly aggrieved, the sending-off led Mikel Arteta to point out after the game that there were similar incidents throughout the match that went unpunished.

“There were many incidents before that where the referee didn’t give any yellow cards – for blocking free-kicks, for kicking the ball out and we got it,” the Arsenal head coach said. “So at the end, you have to be a little bit stable on that and understand the game and the tension about it. After that, we got the decision and we had to fight back.”

10 of the worst referee mistakes in football history

Some say it’s the hardest job in football, but these refs got it really, really wrong.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 7, 2025 6 Takehiro Tomiyasu v Crystal Palace, 2023/24 Referee: David Coote

Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu reacts after being sent off by refereeDavidCoote

Last season, defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was shown his marching orders by David Coote in a game against Crystal Palace after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

The Japan international was first cautioned for apparently time-wasting during a throw-in, with Coote showing him a second yellow just minutes later after the lightest of tugs on Jordan Ayew’s shirt halted a Crystal Palace counter-attack.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was among those to think Tomiyasu was hard done by. “I don’t think Tomiyasu’s actually trying to waste time. I think he’s actually looking for a throw-in, to get it in quickly. He actually ran to pick up the ball. He wasn’t slow. I can understand the referee. But he’s almost took one for the team.”

5 David Luiz v Wolves, 2020/21 Referee: Craig Pawson

David Luiz was never far from controversy during his time in the Premier League, and that was certainly true when Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Wolves in February 2021.

Luiz was sent off for the third time in his Gunners career after being adjudged to have committed a last-man foul in first-half stoppage-time on Wolves striker Willian Jose. Though the contact appeared minimal, the decision was upheld by the VAR.

If anything, it appeared the striker had kicked the Brazilian as he swung to shoot, with Arteta branding the decision, which Arsenal unsuccessfully appealed, as “unfair”.

“I’ve seen it 10 times in different angles and I cannot tell you where the contact is,” he said after the game. “If they have another 50 different angles to watch it, maybe I will be surprised. I looked at seven different angles and I cannot see any contact there.”

4 Gabriel Martinelli v Wolves, 2021/22 Referee: Michael Oliver

Another day, another red card against Wolves, but this time it was for Luiz’s compatriot, Gabriel Martinelli, who was handed one of the most bizarre red cards in Premier League history in February 2022.

The Brazilian winger was sent for an early bath after picking up two yellows in the same phase of play – first for pushing Daniel Podence as he took a throw and then for chasing up the field and fouling Chiquinho as he ran towards goal with the ball. Referee Michael Oliver had waved advantage for Martinelli’s first offence.

A rule change in 2020 by the IFAB seems to indicate that Martinelli should not have seen red.

“If the referee plays ADVANTAGE for an offence which ‘interfered with or stopped a promising attack’, the caution (yellow card, YC) is NOT issued,” the IFAB tweeted in 2020.

3 Declan Rice v Brighton, 2024/25 Referee: Chris Kavanagh

Declan Rice received his marching orders during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton in August 2024 after picking up a second yellow card for poking the ball away from Joel Veltman as the Brighton defender prepared to take a free kick.

While by the letter of the law, the decision could be seen correct, it incensed many Arsenal fans, and has continued to do so because other similar incidents have since gone unpunished.

There is also the fact that Veltman – faintly praised by former official Mike Dean for his “clever” play – had attempted to take a quick free-kick while proceeding to boot Rice from behind, to no punishment whatsoever.

In what will have done little to quell the Gunners’ anger, referee Chris Kavanagh said he “didn’t like” the decision, but felt he “had no choice” but to send the midfielder off.

The 11 most controversial decisions in the Premier League this season

There have been some very contentious refereeing decisions this season in the Premier League…

ByBarney Lane Jan 9, 2025 2 Leandro Trossard v Man City, 2024/25 Referee: Michael Oliver

Just weeks after Declan Rice’s red card against Brighton, Leandro Trossard found himself in a similar situation, earning a second yellow for delaying the restart after a foul.

With Arsenal leading 2-1 against champions Manchester City just before half-time, Trossard barged into Bernardo Silva, sending the Portuguese midfielder tumbling to the ground and resulting in referee Michael Oliver awarding a free-kick to the home side.

After Oliver had blown his whistle, Trossard then appeared to kick the ball away, and the official sent him off.

Trossard and the rest of the Arsenal players protested his innocence, and it certainly seemed harsh given the mere split-second there was between Oliver’s whistle and the Belgian winger hoofing the ball away.

Not only will this have enraged Gunners fans once again, particularly in a big game, but given Silva was prone on the floor and arguably unable to restart play, it could be debated as to whether Trossard delayed proceedings at all.

However, a Key Match Incidents panel said Oliver made the right call.

1 Myles Lewis-Skelly v Wolves, 2024/25 Referee: Michael Oliver

Reuters

What is it about Arsenal having players sent off against Wolves?

In Arsenal’s most recent red card controversy, defender Myles Lewis-Skelly was dismissed for “serious foul play” just before half-time after tripping Wolves defender Matt Doherty near the edge of the Wolves box. The incident occurred as Doherty looked to launch a counter-attack following an Arsenal corner.

The Premier League website defines serious foul play as occurring when “any player lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, side, or behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or in a manner that endangers the safety of an opponent.”

According to the site, if the contact is deemed “forceful” and occurs on the ankle or higher, it warrants a red card.

While Lewis-Skelly’s tackle did make contact with the ankle, referee Michael Oliver’s decision to deem it forceful appeared extremely harsh. Fans, pundits, players, and even managers – Arteta included – were nearly unanimous in criticising the decision.

“I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you,” Arteta said to Sky Sports. “Because it is that obvious, I don’t think my words are going to help.”

Former Manchester City and England star Micah Richards called it the “worst decision I’ve ever seen in Premier League football history”.

“How on earth they can go to VAR, look at a screen, look at it multiple times [and] not even a split second to look at it but ten seconds, 20 seconds, multiple different angles and they still think that is a red card…” Richards said when reflecting on the incident on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“I don’t like using the word ‘disgrace’ because I feel like it’s easy to throw that word out. But if you look at the magnitude of that decision, it was so poor, and for them to double down on the decision, I just think it’s shocking,” only the PGMOL seems to disagree.

Shelley Nitschke handed four-year deal as Australia head coach

Shelley Nitschke has been named the new head coach of the Australia women’s team for the next four years, after having taken on the role in an interim capacity since Matthew Mott left earlier this year.Nitschke, who had been an assistant coach with Australia since 2018, was in charge of the side as they secured gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and had been the frontrunner for the full-time position. A former allrounder who was capped 122 times, Nitschke is currently Perth Scorchers head coach in the WBBL, a role she shared with her previous Australia position, and she will see out her contract with them this season before leaving.”I’m honoured to have been given this opportunity to lead the team full-time and to continue to build on the legacy created by Matthew Mott,” Nitschke said. “While I enjoyed my time working as assistant coach, I feel the time is right to step up and lead this group in what’s shaping as a new era with a new-look coaching group and the retirement of Rachael Haynes.”The loss of Rach will no doubt be felt, but it presents a great opportunity for others to put their hands up both from a leadership perspective as well as with the bat and in the field. Our challenge is to ensure the team continues to evolve; we’ve seen teams like India take their game to the next level and it’s important that the players feel they have the support they need to keep getting better every day.”Our team continues to go from strength to strength and I’m excited to see what this group can achieve next; there’s some important cricket on the horizon including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February and away Ashes next winter, so it’s a great time to be involved.”Nitschke was in charge when Australia won gold at the Commonwealth Games this year•Getty Images

Nitschke’s first assignment as the permanent head coach will be the T20I tour of India in December. Australia next play on home soil in January against Pakistan before heading to South Africa to defend their T20 title. The make-up of Nitschke’s support staff is yet to be confirmed. Dan Marsh and Jude Coleman were her assistants at the Commonwealth Games after Ben Sawyer left to be head coach of the New Zealand women’s team.”We’re delighted to appoint Shelley as head coach of our world champion women’s team,” Ben Oliver, the general manager of high performance and national teams, said. “She did an outstanding job in an interim capacity during the Commonwealth Games and was the clear standout candidate in the recruitment process.”Shelley is an incredibly well-respected coach with a proven track record. She knows what it takes to be successful at an international level and brings significant coaching and playing experience to the role.”She’s been a great mentor for the spin group since joining as an assistant in 2018, helping develop them into some of the world’s leading bowlers, and we look forward to seeing what the team can achieve with Shelley at the helm.”

Way better than Wissa: Arsenal target £361k-p/w star who can leave in Jan

Wednesday night felt like a turning point in Arsenal’s season.

Mikel Arteta’s side went into the North London derby off the back of two cup defeats and in real danger of falling out of the Premier League title race altogether.

Yet, an own goal from Dominic Solanke and a sensational strike from Leandro Trossard saw the Gunners come from behind and close the gap on league leaders Liverpool to just four points.

However, while the game was just what the team and fanbase needed after a gruelling couple of weeks, it also highlighted how badly attacking reinforcements are required, and while Yoane Wissa was linked with the club within 24 hours, he’s not the calibre of player fans are after.

Fortunately, recent reports have once again touted a far more impressive striker for a move to the Emirates, a striker who is way better than the Brentford star.

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa celebrates

Arsenal chase sensational striker

According to a recent report from Italian publication Calciomercato, Arsenal have maintained their strong interest in Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović.

The report has revealed that the Italian club are desperate to get his lofty £361k-per-week wages off the books and that, so long as a reasonable offer is made, he’ll be free to leave.

Now, the story does not clarify what that fee would have to be, but reports from earlier this month claimed that an offer of around £55m could be enough to get the Turin side to sell.

It would, therefore, require a significant investment from Arsenal to get this transfer over the line, but given Vlahović’s ability, it would undoubtedly be worth it, and he’d be a far better signing than Wissa.

How Vlahović compares to Wissa

So, if the board at Arsenal are currently looking at signing Wissa or Vlahović, why should they lean towards the latter? Especially as the former has experience playing in the Premier League.

Well, the first reason is a simple one: their output.

For example, in his 124 appearances for the Old Lady, the Serbian superstar has scored 53 goals and provided 11 assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.93 games.

In contrast, the DR Congo international has scored 41 goals and provided nine assists in 132 appearances for the Bees, which equates to an average of a goal involvement every 2.64 games.

Moreover, it’s not just a case of playing for the better team either, as when we compare their output from their time with their prior clubs, it’s still the Belgrade-born “machine,” as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, who comes out on top.

For example, in just 108 appearances for Fiorentina, the 24-year-old monster scored 49 goals and provided eight assists, which comes out to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.89 games.

In comparison, during his time with FC Lorient, the 28-year-old scored 37 goals and provided 17 assists in 128 appearances, which comes out to a solid but less impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.37 games.

Finally, aside from his raw output, the Juve ace is also 6 foot 3, which would help him deal with the physical nature of the Premier League and make the most of the Gunners’ legendary set-pieces, whereas it’s hard to imagine Wissa getting his head on too many crosses at just 5 foot 9.

Ultimately, while the Brentford star is a brilliant player and has shown as much this season, Vlahović has the more impressive record, is more physically imposing and is four years younger to boot.

Therefore, while he won’t be cheap, Arsenal should do what they can to bring him to the Emirates this month, as he could be the key to them overtaking Liverpool and lifting the title come May.

Nottingham Forest must axe their flop who earns more than Cunha & Wissa

Nottingham Forest are blessed with quality in attacking areas, and it has helped them in their remarkable push for a Champions League spot come the end of the 2024/25 campaign. Chris Wood has been the star of the show, with 14 goals and two assists in all competitions in Garibaldi Red this term.

There have been three other standouts in attack. One of those players is Morgan Gibbs-White, who has four goals and four assists across all competitions this season. Anthony Elanga has performed superbly, with eight goal involvements, and Callum Hudson-Odoi has five goals and assists to his name.

So, to see Forest targeting another two attackers is quite a scary thought for the rest of the Premier League.

Forest’s two attacking targets

It seems like there are two attacking target Forest have before the transfer window slams shut on the 3rd of February. One of those is Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha. According to the Mail, it would cost £70m to sign him this winter.

The Brazilian, who earns £60k-per-week at Molineux, has been fantastic this season, despite Wolves struggling in the relegation zone. In 22 top-flight games this term, he has ten goals and four assists, which would really add to the firepower up front for Forest.

The other target for the East Midlands side is Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. According to Football Insider, the attacker was subject to a bid of £22m last week, but the Bees could be braced for another offer even though they don’t want to sell him.

Like Cunha, it has been an impressive campaign for Wissa this term. The Bees attacker, who earns £25k-per-week, according to Capology, has 11 goals and two assists in 20 Premier League games.

That includes one goal and one assist in the opening day 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Those goals would certainly supplement Wood’s contribution.

Depending on if Forest get one, or both of these deals done, it might mean they have to make some room in the wage budget. That might mean ditching someone from the squad, with James Ward-Prowse someone who earns a lot of money.

James Ward-Prowse's wage at Forest

Forest brought Ward-Prowse into the club from West Ham United on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day last summer. There was no option or obligation to make the move permanent, which is something Forest might be glad about.

It is fair to say that the England international has not been in favour this season under Nuno Espirito Santo. He has played just 12 games in all competitions, featuring for 483 minutes in that time, the equivalent of 5.3 full 90-minute games.

He has registered one assist, in the 3-0 win away to Wolves, selflessly squaring the ball to Taiwo Awoniyi.

It is perhaps a surprise that Ward-Prowse cannot get many opportunities in the Forest side when he is such a deadly set-piece taker.

In fact, Jamie Carragher went as far as saying last season he is “arguably the best in the Premier League” at that particular skill. His deliveries could be a dangerous combination with the likes of Wood and defender Murillo.

The former Southampton star is actually the highest earner at the City Ground. He is on more than Cunha and Wissa combined, earning a whopping £115k-per-week, which equates to £5.98m per year.

Wage (per week)

£105k

Nikola Milenkovic

Given the amount of money Ward-Prowse is on, it might be in Forest’s interest to cancel his loan deal to make room for some potential incomings. With the amount he is earning, there is certainly scope to bring both the Wolves and Brentford attackers if they do end his loan early, which might well help with their push for Champions League football.

If that is a decision Forest take, it might revolutionise their side in attack even more, and help secure them a top-four finish.

Nottingham Forest plotting deal for "special" ace after Leverkusen U-turn

In a late attempt to get their January business underway, Nottingham Forest are now reportedly plotting a move to take full advantage of Bayer Leverkusen’s recent U-turn.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Those at the City Ground have certainly been bold in their approach this month, and why not? Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sit inside the Premier League’s top four and on course for stunning Champions League qualification. One humiliating Bournemouth blip aside last time out, they’ve looked fairly flawless at times. So, now more than ever, they should be putting their new-found status to good use.

Whilst that position is yet to see any reinforcements arrive in the January transfer window, the rumours have been coming thick and fast. Reports suggested earlier this month that the Midlands club are seeking attacking additions before the end of the window and even mentioned names such as Matheus Cunha and Yoane Wissa.

Nottingham Forest must axe their flop who earns more than Cunha & Wissa

Nottingham Forest may need to shift the deadwood in the near future…

ByJoe Nuttall Jan 29, 2025

Cunha would, of course, steal plenty of headlines given that he is currently the star of the show at Forest’s Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers. As things stand, however, it looks as though Forest could be forced to turn towards other options in the final days of the window.

According to GiveMeSport, Nottingham Forest are now plotting a deal to sign James McAtee from Manchester City following the news of Bayer Leverkusen’s U-turn in pursuit of the midfielder.

With the Bundesliga opting to sign Emiliano Buendia on loan from Aston Villa instead, the race is once again open for McAtee who could yet swap the Manchester City bench for the chance to join up with Espirito Santo’s Forest side.

That said, it remains to be seen whether City will allow their youngster to depart this month amid growing injury concerns within Pep Guardiola’s side who are also eyeing a place in the Premier League’s top four.

"Special" McAtee could replicate Elanga's success

Of course, if McAtee did complete a move from The Etihad this month then he wouldn’t be the first player to complete such a switch from Manchester to the City Ground, with Anthony Elanga doing so to such great success in the past after leaving Manchester United. Having seen how greener the grass can be, the Manchester City man could yet decide to follow in the winger’s footsteps.

Attempting to lure Guardiola into allowing his young midfielder to leave this month may well prove to be a tricky task though after the Spaniard was full of praise for McAtee following a recent 8-0 win over Salford.

On the back of McAtee’s FA Cup hat-trick, Guardiola told reporters as relayed by Salford Now: “I am so happy for him, he is a special player. A hat trick is not easy. He has an incredible sense in front of goal, he has the right tempo, he changed the rhythm to score and I am very happy for him.”

With just a matter of days remaining until the transfer window slams shut, McAtee’s future remains in question at Manchester City and it could yet be Nottingham Forest who take full advantage.

England name unchanged squad for third Test against South Africa

Selectors keep faith with group that squared series in style at Old Trafford

Vithushan Ehantharajah31-Aug-2022England men have named an unchanged squad for the third Test against South Africa that begins next Thursday (8 September) at the Kia Oval.Following an innings-and-85-run victory at Emirates Old Trafford, squaring the series at one apiece after the Proteas triumphed by an innings and 12 runs in the first Test at Lord’s, the selection panel, made up of captain Ben Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key, have decided to keep faith with their 14-man group.Having originally named the squad for the first two games, the only likelihood of a change would have come in the event of a defeat. Even then, McCullum is of a mind to allow players as many opportunities as possible to come good, especially with this group of players, whom he and Stokes believe are the best available in the country right now for their respective roles.Zak Crawley, who had endured a torrid run of form this summer, was the player under the most pressure to come good. But a dogged 38 from 101 deliveries in England’s only innings in Manchester was lauded as the platform from which the hosts were able to post an insurmountable total of 415 for nine declared.Related

Now, his opening partner Alex Lees is the focus of external deliberation, averaging 25 across the six Tests so far this summer, albeit with two half-centuries (Crawley has none). Both have been backed by the management, with Key voicing his support of the duo during a lunch segment on Sky Sports during the second Test”There are not many people queuing up to bat at the top of the order, they all want to bat four, five or six,” he said.”We just want to make sure we’re going to give people opportunity. If there is ever a time when we have new opening batters or new players, they will know they will get the same amount of opportunity as these guys have done.”We have spent 10 years since Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook, trying to find an opening partnership and it is the toughest part of batting at the moment. We’re going to give them a proper go.”With the limited-overs squad (to be announced on Friday) due to fly out to Pakistan upon the completion of the Test match, it is understood there may be some members of that group also around at the Kia Oval for their preparation. One of those will be Mark Wood, the Durham quick, who is returning from a second elbow surgery and back bowling at full pace in training.England squad: Ben Stokes (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Foakes (wk), Jack Leach, Alex Lees, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root

Tempers flared after Fareed Ahmad dismissed Asif Ali•Associated Press

Asif Ali and Fareed Ahmad have both been fined 25% of their match fees for a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct during the Asia Cup fixture between Afghanistan and Pakistan on September 7.The incident in question took place in the 19th over of Pakistan’s chase in what had become a tense match, when Fareed dismissed Asif to leave Afghanistan one wicket away from victory. Following the dismissal, Fareed took his celebrations quite close to the dismissed Asif, who reacted by shoving the bowler. A brief altercation ensued.”Asif breached Article 2.6 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match” while Fareed was found to have breached Article 2.1.12, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match,” the ICC said in a statement. Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. The game, which became ill-tempered towards the end, also witnessed crowd trouble after Pakistan won in dramatic fashion by one wicket thanks to two sixes by Naseem Shah off the first two balls of the 20th over. Several Afghanistan fans were detained by police following ugly scenes in the stands, though no arrests were made. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja has said the board would write to the ICC to “lodge a protest” over the “gruesome visuals” that followed the game.
