Durham ram home enormity of Shan Masood's task at Yorkshire's helm

Durham 42 for 2 (Borthwick 21*, Potts 2*) trail Yorkshire 254 (Masood 44, Potts 4-49) by 212 runsIf Shan Masood was under any illusions about the size of his task as he belatedly assumed the captaincy of Yorkshire, his Pakistan duties over at least for the time being, he will be wised up now after just one day in the job. Masood top-scored with 44 and promised to be a settling influence for a troubled county, but a series of misadventures followed as Durham dismissed them for 254. Masood is fortunate they suspect anyone promising miracles up here. The chief tormenter was Matthew Potts, who has slipped out of the England reckoning a little, but who took four good wickets, struck both Masood and his Pakistan teammate, Saud Shakeel, on the helmet with bouncers, swung the ball hugely at times, and bowled with pace and purpose. If injuries bite in the Ashes, he is a good man to have in reserve.Yorkshire have dead-batted the extraordinary suggestion that they have floated a potential investment to stave off bankruptcy with the Saudi culture minister, Badr bin Abdullah Al Saud. If any Saudi princes happned to be watching, they may already be blocking future calls, calculating that bitcoin would be a safer bet. But 254 is a better score than it might at first appear. For the most part, Yorkshire batted with considerable application in challenging conditions in a match that felt First Division quality. Six scores between 21 and 44 might sum up the pitch more than the players. If there is the same indifferent bounce and lavish swing available on Friday, they have the chance to respond in kind, and received just desserts in picking up two wickets in their 13 overs before the close. But it is Durham who lead Division Two and Yorkshire who are still awaiting their first win, and who wasted initially commendable efforts on the first day at Emirates Riverside with a series of calamitous dismissals, capped by the extraordinary sight of three middle-order batters dismissed to a pull shot within 10 balls as Durham’s decision to try out some short stuff after tea proved ridiculously effective.More on that can come later, because talk of Yorkshire and Saudi princes is not a subject that can be dropped so easily. Widely castigated for the past two years for alleged racism within the club, only Yorkshire could think it was a good idea to herald a new dawn by considering investment from a country that could add for good measure the death penalty for gay sex and widespread discrimination against women. It is to be hoped that the ECB has already had a word. There again, Yorkshire forever need to pour oil on troubled waters so if they could pick some up on the cheap it might be useful. All this palaver because Yorkshire’s newly-constituted Board is wary of reappointing Colin Graves as chair – even though they owe him £14.9m, and he is willing to negotiate more favourable pay-back terms – on the grounds that he is somehow symbolic of the bad old days, without ever stating exactly why, and that he might browbeat them into a less progressive future.A certain pragmatism might be advisable here. There can be bullying and bluster about Graves for sure – soon after his appointment as ECB chair, he once rolled up his sleeves to prepare for an interview with this reporter, strode into the room and announced “I’ve had my sleeves rolled up since the day I arrived” – but he has saved them from bankruptcy once and there is the usual element of soap opera that Yorkshire are reluctant to let him save them a second time.Jonny Bairstow has yet to produced the sort of innings to leave England slavering over his return to fitness in time for the Ashes. He followed scores of 20 not out and 0 at Headingley (the latter with eyes on a final-day chase of 492 that was quixotic even in the area of Bazball) with a hard-won 27 from 57 balls which saw him at his most disciplined. He never looked in at any stage, and was fortunate to survive a chance to second slip at 13 during a torrid over from Brydon Carse, but he will benefit from the time at the crease. Indifferent bounce caused his downfall as he toe-ended a fullish outswinger from Bas de Leede onto middle stump. It was quite a debut wicket for de Leede, an allrounder who had played only one previous first-class match and who has been brought to Durham by Ryan Campbell, a former Netherlands head coach. His father, Tim, also a former international, was on hand to see it. He is the eighth Netherlands-born player to enter county cricket, which is a decent record for a country with only about 70 clubs and which can tell a similarly worrying story to England about the incursion of football into the summer, the loss of facilities and the need to integrate Asian ex-pats if the game is to prosper. The most accident-prone innings came, however, from Shakeel, who to be fair is not the first Yorkshire overseas player of late to have an undistinguished record, but who still managed to encapsulate their shortcomings in a single, disaster-prone innings.Shakeel almost fell on nought when he inside-edged Ben Raine over his own stumps. On 3, he needed prolonged treatment on a turned ankle that had caused him to refuse a second run from Masood, attempted one more ball and limped off. He returned at No.8, with Adam Lyth as a runner, and second ball back was struck on the helmet when he tried to pull a bouncer from Potts, survived concerted appeals for a catch, and required a further stoppage. His appetite for taking on the short ball undimmed, he yanked his next ball – only chest high – to de Leede in front of square and set off on a maudlin return to the pavilion that made Inzy’s slowest departures look spritely. George Hill and Dom Bess had succumbed in identical fashion in a post-tea giveaway. All Masood’s work in the morning had therefore unravelled. He stripped his game down to basics, survived confident lbw shouts from Raine and Potts, worked occasional balls square of the wicket, and took Potts’ blow on his helmet in his stride until Potts followed up a couple of big outswingers by causing him to chop on. Dawid Malan also dug in stoutly, but slapped a wide ball to point just as he seemed about to break the shackles.

David and Green settle into 'really flexible' roles after taking Mumbai Indians to their first win

“Knowing how much confidence I got out of that game, I think it will be even more so for Cam,” David says of the win over Delhi Capitals

Matt Roller15-Apr-20232:17

Can David and Green be the new Pollard and Hardik?

Tim David and Cameron Green posed for a photo under the floodlights at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla on Monday night after dragging Mumbai Indians over the line to secure their first win of IPL 2023. David posted it on Instagram with a self-effacing caption: “If you need 5 off 6, we are your men.”It was not a pretty finish, but their unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership worth 30 in 3.1 overs proved just enough to deny Anrich Nortje, who bowled a series of searing yorkers, to clinch Mumbai Indians’ first points of the season. More pertinently, ahead of Sunday afternoon’s fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders, it served as a significant confidence boost for a team that fell to heavy defeats in their first two games.

“Chasing and trying to finish off the game the other night was tough,” David said on Saturday evening, after netting at the Wankhede Stadium. “They bowled a really good last couple of overs in tough batting conditions, so it was great to have that partnership with Greeny and get us over the line. For me, knowing how much confidence I got out of that game, I think it will be even more so for Cam.”Mumbai made a conscious effort to get Green, their INR 17.5 crore (A$ 3.2m approx.) auction purchase, involved in Monday’s game early on, throwing him the ball for the third over of Capitals’ innings. He went wicketless, finishing with 0 for 30 in his three overs, and was then deployed in a new role with the bat as he shuffled down to No. 6 after starting the season at No. 3.It appears that his role is likely to remain flexible throughout the season. “It actually wasn’t planned,” David said of his compatriot’s role change. “The way we feel like, we line up, we’re just going to go with whoever is best matched for that situation at the time.”We feel like we’ve got a really powerful middle order along with obviously the top-order guys who are settled. It’s something that we’ve spoken about as a team: we’re just going to be really flexible, and we’re all prepared to play our role for the team.”David and Green attended the same prestigious school, Scotch College, in Perth’s western suburbs (albeit three years apart) and have played together professionally before: first for Perth Scorchers in the BBL; more recently in Australia’s T20I team. Now, they are team-mates in Mumbai, tasked with restoring the IPL’s most successful franchise to past glories after winning the wooden spoon last year. Green spent Saturday’s net session muscling straight sixes towards the Wankhede’s press box, and David suggested his eight-ball cameo against Capitals would help him – and Mumbai Indians – going forward.”It’s his first couple of games in the IPL,” David said. “It can be different, it can be eye-opening, those first few games coming in as a well-regarded international player. It’s awesome for him, and I know we’re all looking forward to seeing what he can do over this season for us.”We’re very confident that when we play our best, we’re going to score big scores. We’ve got power right through the order. We’re excited, because we know that we’ve got seven or eight guys that throughout the course of the season can play match-winning knocks.”

Watch out Dorgu: Man Utd could unleash their 17-year-old future superstar

Manchester United had a fairly busy January transfer window. The Red Devils made a couple of deals, along with some major outgoings. The biggest departure was that of United academy graduate Marcus Rashford, who left on loan to join Aston Villa until the end of the season.

Brazilian winger Antony also made a temporary switch to La Liga side Real Betis, and Tyrell Malacia joined Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven on loan. There were also loan moves for several academy players, including Ethan Wheatley.

In terms of incomings, United made two signings. Ayden Heaven joined the club from Arsenal on a free transfer, and left wing-back Patrick Dorgu also made the switch to Old Trafford.

Dorgu's time at United so far

Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim addressed a key issue in his side by signing Dorgu. The Dane signed from Serie A strugglers Lecce for a fee of £25m upfront with a further £4.1m in potential add-ons.

The Denmark international was signed to help add depth at left wing-back, an area of United’s squad which clearly needed strengthening. With Luke Shaw out injured and the plan for Malacia to leave on loan, Diogo Dalot was the only option Amorim had on that flank.

It is fair to say that Dorgu has made a strong impression during his short United career so far. He has made four appearances, and was described as “a very promising player” after his impressive performance against Everton last weekend.

Frustratingly, the young Dane was sent off against Ipswich Town in his most recent Premier League clash for a dangerous challenge, which was deemed worthy of a red after a VAR review. Aside from that, he has been excellent in a United shirt so far.

Dorgu clearly has excellent potential, and will surely only get better under Amorim. However, he may not be the only talented left wing-back the club will soon have at their disposal.

The talented youngster who can rival Dorgu

Over the decades, United have been all about giving young stars a chance to prove what they can do in that famous red shirt. The next young player who could be in line to showcase his talent is Diego Leon.

The 17-year-old is a Paraguayan left-back who, according to BBC Sport, had a medical with the club in January. He seems set to make a permanent switch to Old Trafford in the summer from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno, having progressed through their academy ranks.

Last season, the 17-year-old became a key player for the club. He made 19 appearances in the Primera Division Clausura from left-back, completing 90 minutes on 15 occasions. He even managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice.

Already, Leon has made a quick start to the new season in Paraguay. He scored the first goal, a key equaliser, in Cerro Porteno’s 3-1 Copa Libertadores win over Monagas SC. If there were any doubts about Leon’s suitability for playing as a wing-back in Amoirm’s backline, perhaps his goal threat will help to settle them.

Described as an “explosive” player by football analyst Nicolas, Leon’s stats on Sofascore highlight some of his key strengths. For example, he created nine chances last season and made 45 tackles and interceptions.

In contrast, as per Sofascore, Dorgu created 20 chances and made 68 tackles and interceptions this season for Lecce in four more games.

It certainly seems like Leon is a player for United fans to get excited about. The 17-year-old no doubt has a lot to learn in the professional game, but he is clearly a talented youngster who is already impressing in senior football.

Whilst Dorgu has made the left wing-back spot his own for now, perhaps further down the line, Leon could begin challenging him for a spot in the side should he become part of the United first-team squad.

Man Utd may wish they still had this player to call upon in his prime.

Every England manager's first game in charge

Thomas Tuchel’s tenure as England manager will be defined by whether he can steer the Three Lions to World Cup glory in 2026. The German led out his new team against Albania at Wembley on 21st March for the first qualifier for the tournament, with a 2-0 victory at Wembley followed by a comfortable 3-0 success against Latvia three days later.

Bigger tests will come, but none more so than when, as expected, England begin their latest World Cup finals campaign, with eyes set on a first triumph since 1966.

10 wildcard players Thomas Tuchel could call up for England

The new era under the German begins in March, but could he spring a surprise in his first squad selection?

ByCharlie Smith Feb 13, 2025

Plenty of managers have experienced the sensation of qualifying easily before failing spectacularly at a major competition. Fabio Capello, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Roy Hodgson failed to reach the final tournament highs that they did during qualification.

Tuchel could be the one to finally lead England to another major international title. With his first game potentially showing signs of things to come, we have taken a look back at every England manager’s first matches in charge.

There have been 15 permanent England managers, so sit back, grab a drink and enjoy this trip down through the years.

1 Walter Winterbottom Ireland 2-7 England, 1946 British Home Championship

Walter Winterbottom

Walter Winterbottom became the first manager of the England national team in 1946. Prior to this, the team was picked by a variety of international selectors, who also chose the starting XI.

Winterbottom was in charge of the nation between 1946 and 1963, with his first match coming against Ireland in the 1946 British Home Championship.

It proved to be an excellent start, as England ran out 7-2 winners over their opponents. His last match came against Wales in November 1962, a 4-0 victory in the same competition – one that he won 13 times during his spell as head coach.

2 Sir Alf Ramsey France 5-2 England, 1964 European Nations' Cup qualifying

Alf Ramsey will go down in the history books as the first – and so far, only manager – to lead England to a major international trophy, winning the World Cup in 1966.

However, his reign got off to the worst possible start as they suffered a hammering at the hands of France.

The 5-2 defeat ensured England wouldn’t qualify for the main stages of the 1964 European Nations’ Cup (later to be known as the European Championship), which was won by Spain.

Along with the World Cup in 1966, Ramsey led England to the quarter-finals of the 1970 edition, falling to West Germany, while they qualified for the 1968 European Championship, losing to Yugoslavia in the semi-finals.

His last match came in 1973 as England failed to qualify for the World Cup the following year.

Harry Kane has surged up the rankings in recent years, but which England star has the most goals at World Cup finals?

2 ByBen Browning Feb 25, 2025 3 Don Revie England 3-0 Czechoslovakia, Euro 1976 qualifying

Don Revie took Leeds United from the Second Division to the top flight before making them arguably the finest club in England. Two league titles were won, along with the FA Cup and League Cup, but they should have won more.

With this in mind, he was the best choice to lead England, and his first match in charge was a success, securing a 3-0 win over Czechoslovakia in 1974.

England failed to qualify for the 1976 European Championship, as the team Revie had defeated in his first match eventually went on to win the competition.

4 Ron Greenwood England 0-0 Switzerland, friendly

Ron Greenwood led West Ham United to the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following year. His appointment in 1977 was seen as a safe choice.

His first match was a friendly clash against Switzerland which finished 0-0. During his reign, he secured qualification for the 1982 World Cup. Although they made it to the second group stage, England failed to score in their two games and were eliminated.

5 Sir Bobby Robson Denmark 2-2 England, Euro 1984 qualifying

Bobby Robson

Sir Bobby Robson’s success at Ipswich Town, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, indicated that he was the best choice for the role.

His first match against Denmark ended in a 2-2 draw. The Danes ended up securing the qualifying spot for the 1984 European Championship. Robson eventually led England to the finals of the World Cup in 1986 and Euro 1988.

It was their performance at Italia 90 which gave Robson a great send-off as they made it to the semifinals, losing to West Germany.

6 Graham Taylor England 1-0 Hungary, friendly

Graham Taylor

Graham Taylor’s first match in charge of England was a 1-0 win over Hungary at Wembley. He managed to lead the nation to Euro 1992, although England failed to make it beyond the group stage.

More strife was to come, as Taylor couldn’t steer England to the 1994 World Cup, suffering defeats to the Netherlands and Norway in qualifying.

7 Terry Venables England 1-0 Denmark, friendly

Terry Venables

Terry Venables took over the job from Taylor, securing a win over Denmark in his first match in charge. Due to England hosting Euro 1996, England didn’t play any qualifiers, relying on various friendlies to keep them ticking over.

A run to the semi-finals of the competition was England’s best display since the 1990 World Cup, but the penalty-shootout defeat to Germany proved to be Venables’ final match in charge of his country.

8 Glenn Hoddle Moldova 0-3 England, 1998 World Cup qualifying

Glenn Hoddle secured an easy 3-0 win over Moldova in his first game in charge of the Three Lions, which featured a young David Beckham making his England debut.

He led the nation to the 1998 World Cup and hopes were high for the tournament. Facing Argentina in the last 16, England were (once again) knocked out on penalties.

His last match came against the Czech Republic in November that same year.

9 Kevin Keegan England 3-1 Poland, Euro 2000 qualifying

Kevin Keegan’s reign got off to a flyer, defeating Poland 3-1 as they secured a win in their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2000.

They sealed their place at the tournament held by Belgium and the Netherlands, but defeats to Portugal and Romania ensured the nation flew home early.

He resigned after a 1-0 loss to Germany in October 2000, allegedly in the toilets.

10 Sven-Goran Eriksson England 3-0 Spain, friendly

Sven-Goran Eriksson became the first foreign coach of England, and began his tenure with an impressive 3-0 win over Spain in a friendly.

Across his five and a half years in charge, Eriksson led the nation to the quarter-finals at the World Cups in 2002 and 2006, as well as at Euro 2004.

Having the so-called ‘golden generation’ at his disposal, he ought to have reached at least one final, but penalties proved to be his undoing more often than not.

    WHAT ROBERTO MARTINEZ SAID

Portugal’s head coach told when asked about Ronaldo’s role in 2025: “On the field, he is meticulously monitored. Off the field, the players need to show team values, exemplary commitment. When we talk about players like Joao Neves and Mora, having the opportunity to speak to Cristiano helps their performance in the future with the national team.”

Spurs now monitoring £43m "leader" who scored Ronaldo-esque goal last month

Tottenham Hotspur are now closely monitoring a £43m “leader” ahead of a potential summer transfer swoop, but there may be competition for his signature from a number of their Premier League rivals, according to a report.

Spurs pursuing new striker this summer

Dominic Solanke has enjoyed a solid, if not spectacular, debut season with Tottenham, scoring 11 goals in all competitions, in a campaign which has been hindered by numerous injury setbacks.

However, Spurs’ lack of depth in the striker department has caused problems, with Richarlison spending the majority of the season on the sidelines, while Mathys Tel is yet to make a real impact since arriving on loan from Bayern Munich in January.

As such, it appears as though Ange Postecoglou’s side could be keen on bringing in a new striker in the summer transfer window, and they are now prepared to make a ‘super bid’ to sign Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres.

The Tottenham manager is not happy with his midfield options, and could look to get rid of an underperforming player this summer.

ByDominic Lund Mar 25, 2025

The Lilywhites are also in active talks over a deal for Lille’s Jonathan David, who is set to be available on a free transfer, but there may be fierce competition for the forward’s signature, with Arsenal and Manchester United in the race.

According to a report from Viola News, Tottenham are also battling their Premier League rivals for Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, who they are now closely monitoring ahead of a potential summer swoop.

Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea are also named as potential suitors for the striker, whose stock has risen considerably this season, most recently impressing by scoring a brace for national side Italy against Germany.

Italy'sMoiseKeancelebrates scoring their first goal

Kean is protected by a €52m (£43m) release clause in his contract with the Serie A side, but in light of his impressive performances, there is a feeling his true value could be much higher.

Kean could now be entering his prime

The Italy striker has been inconsistent throughout his career, displaying some impressive signs with his goal return for Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020-21 campaign, but struggling to make an impact at Goodison Park during his time with Everton.

However, the 25-year-old could now be entering his prime, given the level of his displays this season, netting 20 goals for Fiorentina in all competitions, including a remarkable strike against Genoa last month.

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti described the effort as a “Cristiano Ronaldo-type goal”, while he also received high praise from Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino, who said: “Moise is doing a great job for the team; he’s our striker and a leader, not just in possession.”

Kean was far from impressive during his previous spell in the Premier League, but his performances for club and country this season indicate he could deserve a second chance.

Bellingham 4th, Mbappe 2nd: The 11 highest-paid La Liga players (2024/25)

Clubs from La Liga enjoyed yet another productive European campaign in 2024/25 with Real Madrid reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League and Barcelona getting to the semi-final stages.

Since 2000, a club from Spain has featured in either a Champions League or UEFA Cup/Europa League final 24 times. Real Madrid and Barcelona have won 12 Champions League crowns between them during that time, while Valencia, Sevilla (seven times), Villarreal and Atlético Madrid have all claimed Europe’s secondary club competition.

As such, La Liga is one of the biggest and best leagues in the world, attracting some of the best talent on offer.

We have taken a look at the highest-paid players in the top flight this season, and it is no surprise to see that two clubs dominate the rankings…

Eder Militao

Eder Militao ranks 11th on this list, earning an eye-watering £232,000 per week at Real Madrid. The centre-back joined the club ahead of the 2019/20 season and has since gone on to make nearly 200 competitive appearances.

Not only has he won three La Liga titles, but the Brazilian has played a key role during Madrid’s two Champions League triumphs since his arrival.

However, the 27-year-old’s season ended prematurely due to suffering a cruciate ligament injury.

10

Antonio Rüdiger (Real Madrid)

£232,000 per week

Antonio Rüdiger made the move from Chelsea to Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2022, and it has turned out to be a wonderful signing.

The Germany defender has been a regular under Carlo Ancelotti since joining, making 137 appearances, helping the club win the Champions League last term. He currently earns the same amount as Militao, raking in £232,000 per week.

9

Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid)

£239,000 per week

The Real Madrid goalkeeper may be approaching the latter years of his career, but Thibaut Courtois is still one of the most important players at the club.

Across 35 games this season, he has conceded 38 goals and kept 11 clean sheets for the club, while earning £239,000 per week.

He missed the majority of the 2023/24 season due to injury, but he has recovered incredibly well.

8

Federico Valverde (Real Madrid)

£265,000 per week

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.

Ancelotti may be able to count on the likes of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé to change games in an instant, but Federico Valverde may just be one of the club’s most important players.

In La Liga, the Uruguayan has registered eight goal contributions, created five big chances, won 66% of his total duels and averaged 1.3 tackles per match.

Keeping him fit will be key between now and the end of the season. He currently earns £265,000 per week at the club.

7

Frenkie de Jong (Barcelona)

£302,000 per week

Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona back in 2019 after shining for Ajax, coming so close to leading them to the Champions League final that year.

Since then, the Dutchman has played nearly 250 games for the Catalan side, following in the footsteps of previous Dutch stars to perform for Barcelona.

One league title and a Spanish Cup are a relatively poor return for the midfielder, who earns £302,000 per week in Spain.

6

Jan Oblak (Atlético Madrid)

£332,000 per week

Jan Oblak is the only player on this list who doesn’t play for Real or Barcelona, but his performances over the previous few years certainly go a long way to justify his £332,000-per-week wage.

220 clean sheets across 481 games for Atlético is an incredible record, while he has conceded 400 goals in that time, which works out as 0.83 goals per game.

5

Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid)

£332,000 per week

Vinicius Jr. celebrates for Real Madrid

Vini Jr has improved year on year since his move to Madrid back in 2018. He scored in the Champions League final last term, the second time he has done so, registering 35 goal contributions across the season.

This was two more than the previous campaign, while the Brazilian has scored 18 goals and grabbed 11 assists in 2024/25. He earns £332,000 per week.

4

Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)

£332,000 per week

Jude Bellingham celebrates for Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham is now one of the finest players in the world following his move from Borussia Dortmund in 2023.

He helped the club win La Liga and the Champions League last term, registering 36 goal contributions in the process. The Englishman earns £332,000 per week at the club, and this could rise in the coming years.

3

David Alaba (Real Madrid)

£358,000 per week

David Alaba left Bayern Munich to join Madrid on a free transfer in 2021, going on to make over 100 appearances, although injuries have hampered his progress.

However, he has added another two Champions League titles to his collection, but so far this term, Alaba has featured only nine times in all competitions.

He is currently the third-highest-paid player in the league, earning £358,000 per week.

2

Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid)

£497,000 per week

Kylian Mbappe’s move to Madrid last summer was years in the making. Having left PSG at the end of his contract, it wasn’t long before he was announced as a Madrid player.

Despite a slow start, the Frenchman is finally hitting top gear. Across all competitions this season, he has scored 28 goals and chipped in with four assists.

His wage at the club currently stands at £497,000 per week.

Ravi Bopara released by Sussex

Sussex have announced that former England allrounder Ravi Bopara will leave the club after not being offered a contract extension.Bopara joined from Essex on a white-ball contract at the end of 2019 and captained Sussex’s T20 side for the last two seasons. At the start of the summer, new head coach Paul Farbrace targeted a place at Finals Day, but Sussex eventually finished sixth in the South Group, missing out on the quarter-finals.Bopara, 38, enjoyed his best Blast season since 2014, scoring 408 runs at a strike rate of 146.23 and recording a career-best 108 against Kent. He did, however, have to sit out Sussex’s trip to the Ageas Bowl after arriving after the start time.Related

He indicated that he would be looking for a new county, “as I have a great deal more to offer to the game as a player”.Farbrace said: “I have enjoyed working with Ravi this summer in the T20 Blast competition and of course wish him well as he moves on to new opportunities. He has played some excellent cricket for Sussex this year, including a superb hundred at Canterbury last week.”Ravi has helped our young players with their development over the last couple of years that he has spent at Hove and we will miss his personality and experience at the club.”Bopara has played 452 games of T20, putting him sixth on the all-time list, and is part of the London Spirit squad for the Hundred, which begins next month.”It was very disappointing to be told by Paul Farbrace last week that there was not to be an extension of my contract at the club,” he said. “This is particularly so after a very good season with bat and ball. Having said that, I’ve loved my time at Sussex.”I have thoroughly enjoyed working with young players in the 2nd XI T20 matches and seeing some of the boys progress to the 1st team. Seeing that progression and development has been incredibly satisfying.”It’s been an absolute honour to have captained the 1st team in the T20 Blast and seeing the potential of our young team of players come through and finish the back end of the tournament strong has highlighted the progress we have made.”I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players and staff who have helped me become a better cricketer and person and all the members and fans for their loyal support throughout the years. I now really looking forward to my next playing opportunity as I have a great deal more to offer to the game as a player.”

Spurs now stepping up interest in "world-class" £42m goalscoring defender

Tottenham Hotspur are now stepping up their interest in signing a “world-class” defender, but there will be competition for his signature from some of Europe’s top clubs, according to a report.

Tottenham plotting moves for defenders

Tottenham are keen on strengthening their defence this summer, having been left a little light on options at times this season due to injuries, and they have now opened talks over a deal for Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca.

Spurs signed Kevin Danso in the January transfer window, with the 26-year-old being brought in to provide competition for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, but Ange Postecoglou has now been handed a chance to bring in additional depth.

An opportunity has arisen to sign AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, with the 19-year-old’s agents reaching out for talks as they look to gauge whether any top club is willing to trigger his £50m release clause in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether Huijsen becomes a concrete target, but one centre-back Tottenham certainly hold an interest in is Feyenoord’s David Hancko, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

Spurs are said to have stepped up their interest in Hancko over the past few weeks, having identified him as a potential summer target, but there is set to be stiff competition for his signature, with a number of top clubs keen.

Chelsea, Atlético Madrid and Juventus are also named as potential suitors for the defender, with all three clubs making contact to discuss the possibility of a move.

Feyenoord would consider letting the centre-back leave this summer, should any interested party be willing to fork out at least £42m.

"World-class" Hancko could push for a starting spot

Injuries have been a real problem for Postecoglou this season, but when everyone is fully fit, the manager is blessed with some very solid defensive options in the form of Van de Ven and Romero.

However, there are indications Hancko could be capable of pushing for a starting spot given the level of his performances for Feyenoord, having been lauded as a “world-class defender” by journalist Diederik de Groot.

Not only is the Feyenoord star solid at the back, but he also poses a threat going forward, as outlined by freelance scout Ben Mattinson, who has praised him for his “impressive” finishing ability.

The Slovak has scored four goals for Feyenoord in all competitions this season, including one against Manchester City in the Champions League, showcasing his attacking threat.

As such, Hancko could be an excellent signing for Tottenham this summer, but they are running the risk of missing out on his signature, with all three of the other potential suitors already making contact to discuss a deal.
