Joe Root hundred guides England on freewheeling first day of the Ashes

The first day of the 2023 Ashes started with Zak Crawley lacing Pat Cummins through cover for four, ended with Australia’s openers seeing out four overs following an opportunistic declaration, and hardly paused for breath in between.England had made clear that they would not change the approach that has brought them so much success in the last 12 months and hurtled towards 400 while scoring at five runs per over, looting 45 boundaries and playing out only two maidens all day. After three successive Ashes series without a hundred as captain, it was Joe Root who underpinned their innings. Several outlandish shots – he twice reverse-scooped sixes over the slip cordon – interspersed a high-tempo cruise and he played late, dabbing, flicking and punching singles out to boundary-riders.Related

  • 'Thumped on the up through cover-point!'

He brought up his hundred in 145 balls, clipping Nathan Lyon off his pads, then twice charged down to hit him back over his head for six in Lyon’s next over. With the second new ball approaching, Ben Stokes had seen enough and called his batters in to leave David Warner and Usman Khawaja 20 minutes to survive until the close. The Edgbaston crowd, who made themselves known to Australia’s boundary-riders throughout an unbridled opening day, became part of the theatre, teeing up Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson as they bounded in with the new ball. But both openers survived with few scares and will come back on Saturday hoping to set Australia on their way to a lead on a flat, slow pitch. It had long been clear that this Ashes would be played at a different tempo to any other, and the first ball of the series only served to reinforce that. Eighteen months ago in Brisbane, Mitchell Starc’s dismissal of Rory Burns set the tone for a tour defined by England’s dismal performances; here, Crawley crunched Cummins through the off side on the up.Cummins posted a deep backward point from the start, pre-empting England’s aggression and by the third over had three men on the rope. Their value was shown in the fourth: Ben Duckett only half-committed to a cut shot, with deep backward point nullifying his opportunity for a boundary, and edged Josh Hazlewood through to Alex Carey.Hazlewood’s inclusion for his first Test since January came as a surprise, with Mitchell Starc making way after playing in the World Test Championship final at The Oval last week. But he was the pick of Australia’s attack, finding some bounce on an unreceptive surface and finishing the day as their most economical bowler – even if he conceded more than four runs per over.Lyon came on early, introduced in the 10th over as though Cummins was dangling a carrot. He started with four men out, but Crawley was in no mood to milk singles, and thrashed the final ball of his first over for four through the covers. By drinks, he had lashed Scott Boland for two further boundaries.”Another 30 for Zak!” taunted an Australian fielder, picked up by the stump microphone, and Crawley’s innings should have ended before he had reached a half-century. He stepped across to the off side looking to whip Boland into the Eric Hollies Stand at midwicket and edged a lifter through to Alex Carey – but Australia did not appeal. He brought up his half-century off 56 balls, but had lost his partner just before. Ollie Pope, who settled into his innings after a frenetic start, lofted Lyon over mid-off but was trapped on the knee roll as he looked to whip across the line. Umpire Ahsan Raza initially gave him not out but ball-tracking confirmed the ball had pitched in line with leg stump.England ticked over throughout the session, taking an unprecedented 54 singles before lunch – yet Australia’s defensive fields were vindicated by three wickets in the first session, Crawley falling in the final over of the morning. He gloved behind as Boland found some extra bounce from a length, Australia successfully reviewing the on-field decision.Harry Brook, facing Australia for the first time in his career, counter-punched in the afternoon, lofting Lyon over cover from the eighth ball he faced. He cut and drove Boland for two boundaries in three balls, but nearly fell in the same over: he top-edged a short, wide ball which Travis Head initially failed to pick up at deep point, then dropped as he scampered in and dived forwards.England then lost two wickets in nine balls, leaving them 176 for 5. Brook’s dismissal was a freak: he shouldered arms to Lyon and the ball ballooned up off his thigh pad to a cry of “catch it”; Carey tried to but watched it land inside the crease and spin sharply back into middle stump. He caught the next one that came his way, an outside edge from Stokes as Hazlewood angled one across him. That brought Jonny Bairstow in for his first Test innings since September, and he survived a tight review for lbw off his first ball. But as Root cruised to a half-century without breaking sweat, Bairstow found his rhythm, slashing Cameron Green – who bowled only six overs in the day – over the off side.Root was given out on 61 but successfully overturned the lbw decision on review, having gloved the ball into his pad. It was the second of three successive reverse-sweeps he played off Lyon; the other two flew to the boundary.Bairstow played aggressor after tea as the partnership swelled past 100, but his dismissal for a run-a-ball 78 preceded a frantic passage of play. He and the returning Moeen Ali were both stumped off Lyon, charging down the pitch, before Broad lost his off stump to Green after hoicking a couple of fours.Root freed his arms after ticking past his hundred, a landmark that was met with a punch of the air and a standing ovation from around the ground. This was his first hundred against Australia in eight years, with a dozen unconverted half-centuries in between times, and the 30th of his Test career. There was enough time for him to take 20 runs off one Lyon over – along with Robinson, who reverse-swept him for four – before Stokes, wearing his bucket hat, gestured for the pair to come back in. There may never have been a day of Ashes cricket quite like it.

Taskin Ahmed grabs four as Bangladesh annihilate Afghanistan in their biggest Test win

The foundation for the hosts’ 546-run win was laid by twin centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto

Bangladesh 382 (Shanto 146, Mahmudul 76, Masood 5-79) and 425 for 4 dec (Shanto 124, Mominul 121*, Zahir 2-112) beat Afghanistan 146 (Zazai 36, Ebadot 4-47, Taijul 2-7) and 115 (Rahmat 30, Taskin 4-37, Shoriful 3-28) by 546 runsBangladesh beat Afghanistan by 546 runs in the one-off Test in Dhaka, thus achieving their highest victory margin in Tests, and the third highest in the format’s history. The visitors’ last man Zahir Khan took a blow to the elbow and retired hurt during an extended morning session on the fourth day, thus leaving the hosts with only nine second-innings wickets to take to complete the win. Some drama also took place just before that, as Bangladesh neared victory. Zahir was given out caught behind off the ball of the 33rd over, with Taskin Ahmed taking off to celebrate what he thought was his first five-for in Tests, only for the batter to overturn the decision on review, as replays showed the ball had missed the bat by an inch. The delivery immediately after, Taskin bowled Zahir, only for the ball to be deemed as an above-waist full toss, and thus a no-ball. Then three legal balls after that, Taskin crashed one into Zahir’s elbow, thus rendering him unable to bat. After a few minutes of discussion and medical attention, Zahir walked off. That confirmed a massive win for Bangladesh.Bangladesh’s fast bowlers combined to take 14 wickets in the match, the most for them in a Test. The hosts entered the fourth day requiring eight wickets to seal the win, which they duly did inside 22 overs although eventually they had to take one wicket lesser. It started in the third over of the day when Nasir Jamal could do little against a beautiful delivery from Ebadot Hossain: the ball pitched outside off and straightened just enough to tickle the batter’s outside edge.Next over, Rahmat Shah survived when he was given out caught in the slips off a snorter from Shoriful Islam, before the TV umpire determined that the ball had come off his armguard. But Shoriful didn’t have to wait too long for his first wicket of the morning: three overs later – the 19th of the innings – Afsar Zazai edged him to Mehidy Hasan Miraz at gully.Najmul Hossain Shanto cracked two centuries in Dhaka•AFP/Getty Images

As a result of that wicket, in came debutant Bahir Shah, who was brought in as concussion substitute for captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. But Shoriful ended the 21st over by having him caught at third slip, where Taijul Islam took a good, low catch. That meant Afghanistan were 78 for 5, which soon became 91 for 6 when Taskin had Rahmat Shah caught behind for 30 four overs later. Taskin’s third wicket came soon after, when he bowled Karim Janat for 18.That meant all of the seven wickets to fall had gone to Bangladesh’s fast bowlers, after which one finally went to a spinner. Brought into the attack to start the 32nd over, Mehidy struck third ball when he had Amir Hamza caught at short leg, where the ball landed after coming off his glove and helmet in an attempted pull shot. And next over, Taskin had Yamin Ahmadzai caught at mid-off to get his fourth. But Afghanistan’s troubles had begun on the third evening itself, when Shoriful had trapped Ibrahim Zadran lbw first ball, thus becoming the second Bangladesh bowler after Mashrafe Mortaza to start an innings with a wicket. Next over, Abdul Malik chased an away swinger from Taskin, only to be caught behind for 5.Come the sixth over, Taskin struck Shahidi on the head with a bouncer. Shahidi, who had ducked at the ball after seemingly taking his eyes off, fell flat on the pitch, before walking off retired hurt. Effectively, Afghanistan were three down, before Bahir would take Shahidi’s place. But much before those problems for Afghanistan, twin centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto – and one from Mominul Haque in the second innings – had already laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s triumph. They declared their second innings on 425 after obtaining a 236-run first-innings lead, thus setting Afghanistan an improbable 662. That eventually turned out to be more than enough for a commanding win.

£110k-a-week Arsenal player's agents jet out for meeting over summer move

The agents of a “sensational” Arsenal player have now jetted out to hold a meeting over a potential move away from the Emirates Stadium, according to a report.

Andrea Berta planning summer midfield rebuild

Andrea Berta is poised to become the Gunners’ new sporting director, and while fans may be crying out for the Italian to sign a new striker as the first port of call, there have been suggestions he is also keen on overhauling the midfield.

Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi remains Berta’s top target in midfield, although it is not yet a done deal, with the Spaniard potentially in line to take Thomas Partey’s spot in the starting XI, as the Ghanaian is out of contract at the end of the season.

Mikel Arteta is also believed to be a big fan of a different La Liga midfielder, however, with a report revealing the north Londoners are now very keen on signing Barcelona’s Marc Casado, although the Spaniard is protected by a huge £83m release clause.

Arsenal ahead of Liverpool in race to sign £71m striker who Wenger loves

The Gunners have leapfrogged their Premier League rivals in the race for an “unbelievable” forward.

ByDominic Lund Mar 17, 2025

There may be a need to bring in more than one new central midfielder this summer, given that there is also major doubt over Jorginho’s future, and reports from Brazil have revealed the Italian’s agents have now jetted out to discuss a move to Flamengo (via Sport Witness).

There is reportedly already a verbal agreement in place for the midfielder to join the Brazilian club on a three-year deal, and his reps have now held a meeting with Flamengo sporting director Jose Boto.

Arsenal'sJorginhoapplauds fans after the matc

The 33-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign, meaning he will be able to join Flamengo on a free transfer.

"Sensational" Jorginho playing sporadic role this season

The central midfielder has been impressive for the Gunners in the past, being lauded as “sensational” by BBC journalist Dan George, but he has started to play a lesser role in Arteta’s side this season, although he has played his part from the sidelines.

The Brazil-born midfielder has featured 12 times in the Premier League, with many of those appearances coming from the bench, and at 33-years-old he is arguably in the twilight years of his career, so it is probably wise to sanction his departure.

A return to the country of his birth could be a fitting end to Jorginho’s career, and Arsenal are now tasked with bringing in a suitable replacement for the £110k-per-week maestro, having identified a number of potential targets.

Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder are unavailable for selection, while Keemo Paul is out injured

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jul-2023West Indies have recalled Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas into the ODI squad for the three-match series against India. According to a Cricket West Indies release, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder are unavailable for selection, while Keemo Paul is out injured.Fast bowler Jayden Seales and legspinner Yannic Cariah are also back following their rehab after surgery, while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie returns having recovered from his lower-back injury.Related

Hetmyer was left out of the West Indies’ ODI World Cup Qualifier squad in May despite having made himself available for selection because the management wanted to give a longer run to the players who had performed well in the series leading up to it. West Indies failed to qualify for the main event after losing four out of seven games in the Qualifier. Hetmyer last played for West Indies in the home T20I series against New Zealand in August 2022. His last ODI was in July 2021, against Australia in Barbados.ESPNcricinfo LtdFast bowler Thomas, meanwhile, last played for West Indies in December 2021 and has been out of contention in recent times with fitness issues. He last played competitive cricket in 2022, when he turned up for Falcons in the Lanka Premier League.”We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group,” chief selector Desmond Haynes said. “Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up. Oshane brings pace and is a potential wicket-taker with the new ball. Shimron’s style of batting will offer a lot especially in the middle stage of the innings and he is also a potential ‘finisher’.”Kensington Oval in Barbados is set to host the first two matches on July 27 and 29 respectively, while the third and final ODI will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on August 1. A four-day camp was held at Kensington Oval to prepare the white-ball players for the series.

Ashwin's seven-for sews up India's innings win

The spinner triggered another West Indies collapse and finished with a match haul of 12 wickets

Hemant Brar14-Jul-2023

R Ashwin sealed a massive victory for India in three days•Associated Press

R Ashwin finished with 12 wickets in the match as India beat West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the first Test at Windsor Park. After debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 171 enabled India to declare with a lead of 271, Ashwin picked up 7 for 71 as West Indies folded for 130 on the third evening. With the pitch offering plenty of turn and bounce for spinners, Rohit Sharma had Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja operating in tandem after the fourth over of West Indies’ second innings. The duo didn’t take long to make an impact and, using around-the-wicket angle, they ran through West Indies’ top order. Ashwin dismissed right-handers Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood and Jadeja accounted for left-handers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Raymon Reifer. That reduced West Indies to 32 for 4 despite Ishan Kishan dropping Brathwaite on zero off Jadeja.Athanaze and Joshua Da Silva took the side past 50 but their stand was worth only 26 when Mohammed Siraj trapped Da Silva lbw. Athanaze, dropped on 1 by Jaiswal off Ashwin, was trying to stay positive. He had hit a couple of fours in Ashwin’s first spell but the offspinner returned to have him caught at short leg with Jaiswal making no mistake on this occasion.Related

Rahkeem Cornwall's illness deals double-blow to West Indies' hopes

Alzarri Joseph walked in ahead of Rahkeem Cornwall for the second time in the Test, and tried to survive by way of attack. He hit Ashwin over long-off for a six but holed out to deep midwicket when he went for another slog. For his fifth wicket, Ashwin switched to over the wicket and had Cornwall caught at short leg with a big offbreak. Kemar Roach didn’t last long either, and while Jomel Warrican entertained for a brief period, it took Ashwin only a couple of overs after the scheduled hours to have him lbw. Jason Holder resisted for 50 balls but there was little help from the other end.In the morning, as Jaiswal and Virat Kohli resumed India’s innings from 312 for 2, West Indies started with a couple of handicaps. Joseph couldn’t open the bowling because he was off the field for 28 minutes before stumps last evening. Cornwall was also not allowed to bowl for two hours as he had gone off the field with a chest infection before lunch on day two.On a pitch that was slowing down with every passing over, Jaiswal had no trouble driving on the up against seamers. The opener picked up his first boundary of the day with an on-drive off Holder. Three balls later, he became the third Indian after Shikhar Dhawan (187) and Rohit (177) to score 150 or more on Test debut.Joseph replaced Holder as soon as he was eligible to bowl. By then Jaiswal was looking to score quickly. He uppercut Joseph over backward point for four to bring up the 100-run partnership with Kohli, before skipping down the ground to launch Warrican for a straight six.Joseph then pulled his length back, bowled five successive dot balls to Jaiswal, and had him caught behind with the sixth as the left-hander looked to punch off the back foot.Ajinkya Rahane failed to account for the slowness of the pitch and fell for 3, chipping Roach’s first ball of the morning to cover.West Indies had the opportunity to dismiss Kohli in the sixth over of the day, when Warrican got him to push uppishly towards extra cover but Brathwaite dropped the catch. Kohli was on 40 at the time and he had to work hard for his runs. It took him 147 balls to bring up his half-century, his third slowest in Test cricket. The run-scoring became slightly easier when, around 25 minutes before lunch, Brathwaite deployed Athanaze from one end and himself from the other. Kohli and Jadeja used that window to score a couple of boundaries each and take India to 400.Just after lunch, Kohli got another reprieve on 72. Driving away from the body, he edged Roach behind the stumps, and Da Silva, despite his one-handed diving effort, couldn’t hold on to the chance. Kohli’s innings eventually came to an end on 76 when he flicked Cornwall to leg slip.Like the fellow debutant Jaiswal, Kishan also took a long time to open his account. Jaiswal had got off the mark off the 16th ball; Kishan did so on the 20th. As soon as Kishan scored his first run, Rohit declared the innings.

Abbott, Jacks finish the job as Surrey maintain pace at the top

Surrey 433 (Smith 138, Burns 79, Clark 78, Helm 6-110) and 78 for 2 (Jacks 45*) beat Middlesex 238 (Simpson 60, Holden 55, Abbott 3-37, Overton 3-45, Lawes 3-57) and 272 (Stoneman 72, Bamber 46*, Abbott 4-60) by eight wicketsWill Jacks struck a swift unbeaten 45 as Surrey motored to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over neighbours Middlesex inside an hour on the final morning. The LV= Insurance County Championship front-runners needed only 11.1 overs to chase down a modest target of 78, completing their second derby success of the season and a first red-ball win at Lord’s for 26 years. Middlesex, who remain second from bottom in Division One, have now lost four of their last five Championship fixtures.”We were pretty clinical, I think, over three and a bit days,” Rory Burns, Surrey’s captain, said. “There are a few bits we could have tidied up on but, if you’d offered us that before the start of the game, we’d have taken it. Particularly after getting inserted on the first morning, to put up 433 as a batting group and then back that up by making them follow on – and the way we went about it – I think it’s a big feather in our caps.”I thought Jamie [Smith] played beautifully [in the first innings] and Jordan [Clark] was in pretty good nick as well. The way he came in and played was excellent, to get ourselves up to that sort of total was brilliant.”It’s a tough shift, any time you make someone follow on – I think we had about 150 [overs] in the dirt there, back to back. To take 20 wickets and keep being quite relentless over that period is a massive effort. Getting a wicket second ball [today] is always handy. The weather probably had a part to play in our chase as well, we were looking to get it done as quickly as we could.”With rain forecast for later in the day, Surrey were keen to secure the result as quickly as possible after bowling their hosts out for 272, with seamer Sean Abbott returning figures of 4 for 60.Abbott took only two deliveries to finish off Middlesex’s second innings when play resumed, banging it in short to last man Tim Murtagh, who could only fend it off into the slip area and Dom Sibley took the catch. That left Ethan Bamber stranded on a career-best 46 not out and Surrey with 78 to score – just five more than the target they chased to complete a nine-wicket victory against Middlesex at the Oval in May.First-innings centurion Smith was promoted to begin the chase with Burns, but he lasted just two balls on this occasion before clipping Tom Helm tamely into the hands of midwicket. Helm picked up a second wicket, his eighth of the match, when Burns attempted a paddle from outside off stump that was neatly taken by Murtagh at long leg, but Jacks maintained momentum by clouting Bamber over the cover boundary.Tom Latham also struck a maximum off Helm before hitting the winning runs off Mark Stoneman to finish unbeaten on 21.
