    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maresca's plans for the season were dealt a hammer blow during his side's comfortable 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday, as Delap was forced off the field inside the opening 15 minutes after sustaining a hamstring injury. According to , Chelsea have much to worry about, as the English striker's injury could prove to be worse than initially thought. Upon immediate assessment of his injury, it was revealed Delap could be ruled out for six to eight weeks, but a longer layoff cannot be ruled out upon further examination.

Jackson was on his way to complete his loan move to Bayern Munich after the Bundesliga giants agreed to pay a record €15 million (£13m/$17.5m) loan fee with an obligation to permanently buy him next summer for €80m (£69m/$93m). The Senegalese striker had even landed in Germany for his medical, but after news of Delap's injury broke out, the Blues revoked Jackson's permission to undergo the medical. The 24-year-old was adamant on signing for Die Roten and refused to return to London in the hope Bayern would convince Chelsea to let him join them. However, Jackson's wishes did not come to fruition as Bayern pulled the plug and withdrew from the operation on Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether Jackson returns to the dynamic under Maresca after he was told he was not being counted on for the 2025-26 season. It is clear that Joao Pedro will continue to lead the line after his ferocious start to life at Stamford Bridge. Guiu's return potentially indicates that the 19-year-old will deputise for Pedro, with Jackson as the third-choice No.9.

Silva bid farewell to his Wolves team-mates after their Carabao Cup win over West Ham on Tuesday night, having not been included in the squad. Roma and AC Milan had also shown interest, but Dortmund moved quickly to close the transfer. The Black and Yellows have been busy strengthening their attack this summer, with Silva’s arrival coming after the additions of Chelsea pair Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Anselmino, Manchester City full-back Yan Couto and Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland.

The 23-year-old, who cost Wolves a record €40m (£34m/$44m) when he signed from Porto in 2020, has struggled to make an impact in England. However, he rebuilt his confidence during loan spells at Anderlecht, PSV, Rangers and, most recently, Las Palmas, where he scored 10 goals last season. Silva brings both potential and European experience to Dortmund. He has made 72 appearances for Wolves, scoring five goals and providing six assists, but has shown flashes of quality in his loan stints. The forward has also represented Portugal at youth level and made one senior appearance for the national team.

'Sam Kerr is in the squad!' – Sonia Bompastor confirms long-awaited return of Chelsea star after 18-month ACL lay-off

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor confirmed Sam Kerr's long-awaited return into WSL action after an 18-month ACL lay-off. WHAT BOMPASTOR SAID

Bompastor delivered the update on Kerr’s condition and said, "Kerr is in the squad. She will be involved in the game. We don't know yet if she will start or not but she's in the squad. She's in a good place. She's been training well. She's physically in a good position, also mentally. It's nice because she is one of the players everyone wants to see on the pitch.

"That's nice for me, also, to have her in the squad, with her leadership and experience. At the same time, to be fair to her, she's been away from the pitch for a long time so I think we still need to be patient. That's normal for her not to be at her best level yet. Hopefully soon, but that's already a good step for her and for us for her to be in the squad."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bompastor praised Kerr’s leadership and technical intelligence, highlighting her ability to elevate the squad both on and off the pitch.

"It's been really enjoyable for me and the squad to have her around again because I spoke about her quality on the pitch but also what she brings as a leader," she added. "She's a really smart player. I really enjoy watching her making these good runs with the right timing. With this kind of player, you don't really teach them how to play football. They already know how to do that. For me, it's more to give them all the confidence to be the best versions of themselves on the pitch, but also some small details. I try to help in that sense but Sam is a great player and she doesn't need much."

Kerr’s comeback is a boost for Chelsea, especially as the squad faces early-season injury setbacks. Mayra Ramirez will be missed after undergoing hamstring surgery. Ramirez was forced off during Chelsea’s pre-season clash with AC Milan and was replaced by Chloe Sarwie. Meanwhile, England international Lauren James, who shone during the Lionesses’ victorious European Championship run earlier this summer, is also sidelined “for a period of time.” Her absence compounds Chelsea’s early-season injury woes, making Kerr’s return even more crucial.

WPL player auction likely on February 11 or 13, Mumbai could host first edition

The inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) player auction is likely to take place on February 11 in New Delhi or February 13 in Mumbai. A final decision will be made by the BCCI this week.Originally, the BCCI was looking at holding the players’ auction on February 6 in Mumbai, which would have allowed the five newly-minted franchises just under a month to get ready for the inaugural WPL season, which is expected to take place between March 4 and 24. However, the BCCI was forced to change that plan for two reasons. One, the majority of the owners of the five WPL franchises also own teams in the ILT20 in the UAE and the SA20 in South Africa, with the finals of these tournaments scheduled to take place on February 12 and 11, respectively. It could lead to a problem for the franchises because their owners and support staff would want to stay with the teams for the knockouts and also attend the WPL player auction, which are all going to be held in different countries.Related

  • Breaking down the WPL auction – Who bid the most money?

  • Owners of Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, RCB win bids to own WPL teams

The owners of three IPL teams – Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals – along with Adani Group and Capri Global – secured the five WPL franchises, paying a total of INR 4669.99 crore (USD 572.78 million approx) in what is the biggest deal in women’s cricket.Four of the five WPL franchises own teams in the ILT20: MI Emirates, Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants (Adani), and Sharjah Warriors (Capri). The owners of Mumbai and Capitals operate teams in the SA20 as well: MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals. The second reason is that the franchises have had limited time to assemble their coaching staff, which would be a key factor while picking players at the auction. Accordingly, it is understood that the franchises collectively requested the BCCI to postpone the auction from February 6 to a later date.

WPL first season likely to take place in Mumbai

The BCCI has earmarked two venues in Mumbai – Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Cricket Academy in Navi Mumbai – to host the 22 matches that will comprise the inaugural WPL season. The key reason for limiting the tournament to one city is the potential logistical challenges the BCCI fears it could face due to the WPL starting close on the heels of the Women’s T20 World Cup, which ends in South Africa on February 26. With less than a week available to fly to India, playing at just two venues in the same city would remove travel obstacles and keep players ready for the matches that will be played in a tight window.Sourav Ganguly has informed the media that ‘Jhulan has gone to Mumbai’•AFP/Getty Images

Jhulan Goswami to join Mumbai as bowling coach and mentor

Former India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami has been roped in by Mumbai as bowling coach and mentor. While Mumbai have not made the news public, the development was disclosed by former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who has re-joined Capitals as team director after serving as BCCI president from 2019 to October 2022.Goswami, who is 40, retired from international cricket last year. Ganguly said the Capitals had also been keen on roping in Goswami, who took 355 international wickets across formats, the most by any bowler in women’s cricket. “Jhulan has gone to Mumbai,” Ganguly told media at Eden Gardens on Tuesday. “We had given her an offer, but she is going to Mumbai.”

Are Al-Nassr better without Cristiano Ronaldo?! Sadio Mane scores four against 10-man Al-Akhdoud as CR7's side record their biggest EVER win in his absence with 9-0 thumping

Al-Nassr's battle to finish third in the Saudi Pro League this season to secure AFC Champions League football has continued, with Al Qadsiyah and Al-Ahli within two points. After suffering defeat to Al-Ittihad, Faris Najd knew that they were in for any easy outing on Monday evening as they went up against 17th-placed Al-Akhdoud. Stefano Pioli decided to leave five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo out of his squad, and Al-Nassr cruised to an easy victory against the relegation battlers.

Pioli's side had a comfortable start to the game as they rotated possession against the deep defensive line of Al-Akhdoud, however, the first quarter of the hour did not see them challenge Paulo Vitor's goal. When Ayman Yahya opened the scoring in the 16th minute for Al-Nassr, he opened the floodgates for the night as Jhon Duran and Marcelo Brozovic tripled their lead in just over 10 minutes. Mane then scored the fourth of the night from the penalty spot for Pioli's side after Nawaf Boushal was brought down inside the box just before the half-time whistle.

Al-Akhdoud's trouble then increased tenfold just minutes into the second half as Vitor was questionably sent off for a last-man challenge on Otavio as he charged through on a loose ball. Duran was ready to show that he can play centrally in the absence of Ronaldo, as he exhibited a perfect striker's finish to score his second goal of the night and Al-Nassr's fifth. As was the case in the first half, one goal brings two more as Mane completed his hat-trick with two goals in six minutes, to get Faris Najd's tally up to seven. The Senegalese then got his fourth of the night to give Pioli's side a massive 8-0 lead, before Mohammed Maran scored a penalty in injury time. The result marks Nassr's biggest win in their history.

    THE MVP

Mane turned back the years on Monday evening as he grabbed his first Saudi Pro League hat-trick, and finished the game with four goals to his name. The Senegalese has always been more of an afterthought at Al-Nassr since his move, as Ronaldo took the spotlight but he showed that he can spearhead the attack on his own when needed. The Liverpool legend brought his SPL goal tally up to 13 with his quadruple.

    THE BIG LOSER

Ronaldo did not feature at all during Al-Nassr's massive win, and one must wonder what is going on inside the mind of the Portugal captain. Firstly, he missed out on a rout that could have helped him gain ground on his dream of scoring 1000 goals. Secondly, he may now be giving some thought to the idea that Nassr can perform capably without him, especially given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his contract situation.
