'As an allrounder I have a lot to do in every department because competition has gone up'

As she gears up for her KSL debut, Deepti Sharma is also honing her skills as India’s premier allrounder to take on a hectic international schedule later in the year

Annesha Ghosh05-Aug-2019On June 24, 2017, Deepti Sharma made her World Cup debut at age 19, in India’s tournament opener, her first game in England. She got a wicket off her very first ball – Natalie Sciver caught behind. It also happened to be the first wicket via the DRS in women’s cricket. The left-hand batting allrounder would go on to finish the tournament with 216 runs, and as India’s leading wicket-taker; skipper Mithali Raj called her one of India’s future captains. Two years on from that breakout performance, though, Deepti’s primary skill, batting, is not quite where it ought to be. Fellow left-hander Smriti Mandhana took over the opening slot in the 2017 World Cup and made it her own. Since then, Deepti, the holder of India’s highest individual score in ODIs, has been shunted up and down the order across formats, and has had to make do with limited, infrequent opportunities with the bat. But as she gears up to make her Kia Super League debut in the UK, one of only four Indians – Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur are also playing – in the tournament, she is hoping for a second wind.”Some days,” she says, “things would go fine and I’d click [in ODIs]”. That happened in sweltering Nagpur last year. Elsewhere, as on a flat Potchefstroom track in February 2018, she finished with an inadequate 112-ball 79 as an opener; and a 49-ball 27 in Mumbai, from No. 6. In T20Is, since January 2018, she has batted in 15 of 24 completed matches – six times at Nos. 6 and 7, twice at Nos. 8 and 9, and seven times at Nos. 3, 4 and 5. “Irrespective of where you bat, how much you score, how quick or slow you score, or how many wickets you get, if India lose, it means you needed to do better on the day,” she says. The lack of clarity about one’s role in the team can often cause young allrounders to devolve into bits-and-pieces players. But Deepti, who is currently second on the list of ODI allrounders, after only Ellyse Perry, says she has averted this by conscientiously raising the quality of her offspin.”I back myself as an allrounder,” she says, “and batting-wise, I have prepared myself to go in anywhere. If the team wants to use me as a floater or gives me a designated position, I am happy fulfilling any role they assign. The Indian team has entered a stage where each one of us has a lot to prove, and as an allrounder, I have a lot of work to do in every department because the competition has gone up.”

“The younger Deepti would think that once you made it to the Indian team, you’ve achieved a lot. What she didn’t realise back then is that to stay there is a different challenge”

The youngest Indian, male or female, to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs, Deepti is the second fastest (43 matches) and second youngest woman to the career double of 1000-plus runs and 50-plus wickets in the format. She is also among the more reliable fielders in the Indian side, alongside Harmanpreet, Rodrigues and Veda Krishnamurthy.During the ODI series opener in New Zealand earlier this year, both those skills were on display. First, she handed India a momentum-changing breakthrough in the 14th over, her rocket arm catching Sophie Devine short. Later, in the 17th over, she set up Suzie Bates with a string of dot balls under overcast conditions, bowling her for her 50th ODI wicket.Deepti says that a good run in overseas leagues can help recalibrate international careers. For an example, she only needs to look to Mandhana, who went through a lean patch during the World Cup, stringing together a series of single-digit scores after making 90 and 108 in the first two matches, but topped the batting charts when she came back to England for her maiden KSL stint.”Smriti becoming the Player of the Tournament [in KSL], becoming the leading run-getter last year, showed that Indians can not only do well, but excel. The way her consistency improved after that brief lean patch, it’s been very encouraging for all [of us in the Indian dressing room]. She’s kept scoring runs and, as ever, kept her composure while batting, which I admire in her.”Deepti will also be Mandhana’s team-mate in the KSL – both are set to play for last season’s finalists, Western Storm. Earlier, after her World Cup performance, Deepti was briefly on the radar of WBBL teams, but an offer didn’t materialise. So, during the Women’s T20 Challenge in May this year, when Storm got in touch with Deepti via Mandhana, she was quick on the trigger. A second franchise, Lancashire Thunder, offered her a contract ten days later, but she didn’t waver.”The Indian team has entered a stage where each one of us has a lot to prove”•Annesha Ghosh/ESPNcricinfo”I had a chat with Trevor Griffin [Western Storm head coach] on WhatsApp,” says Deepti, “and since Smriti had played there last year, that’s also a bit of an assurance, for I know there’s someone I already know and have played with, who knows the group, the coach and the culture.”The three-team Women’s T20 Challenge, held in Jaipur last May during the IPL, also brought learnings she hopes to use in the days leading up to the World T20 in February-March next year, and the World Cup in 2021.”Sophie [Ecclestone, England spin-bowling allrounder] is only 19 or 20, but in the Women’s T20 Challenge, I saw how sorted she was,” says Deepti. Ecclestone bowled the penultimate over in the opener, where she gave away only two runs defending 21.”You look at Sophie and you won’t think she is ever under stress. Suzie Bates, too, gave off a similar impression, but in reality you know each one of them is under pressure because this is top-flight competitive cricket after all. Their approach to high-pressure situations is something I think we [the Indian team] have a lot to learn from.”Deepti pulled off an impressive bowling performance herself in the tournament, in her side Trailblazers’ second game. She was handed the ball in the 18th over, with the opposition, Velocity, just two shy of victory. Deepti bowled three batsmen, including her ODI captain Raj, in five deliveries, capping off a sequence where Velocity lost five wickets for no runs. Deepti’s figures in that match read 4 for 14.”In T20s, I try to bowl slightly flatter, but not without variations,” says Deepti. “I make it a point to use the crease, the box, more than in ODIs, and I practise all of that both with the new ball and for the slog overs. Bowling wicket to wicket may seem simple but it helps me get in a few dot balls here and there.”

“Irrespective of where you bat, how much you score, how quick or slow you score, or how many wickets you get, if India lose, it means you needed to do better on the day”

As far as batting goes, Deepti says she has altered her approach this past domestic season, playing for Bengal, and later while training under her elder brother Sumit during a visit to her home town Agra.”I tried to adopt a slightly more aggressive approach,” she says, “because if at any point the team wants me to perform a role in that mould, I should be able to do that. My strength is playing in the V, but I’ve been trying to get more confident in other scoring areas too, with the slog sweep, the lofted strokes.”That helped during the New Zealand tour earlier this year, but the series as a whole was a mixed bag for her. Deepti’s standout performance came in the third and final ODI, where she made 52 – but in a losing cause: India collapsed and folded for 149. In the three T20Is that followed, she made 5, 6 and an unbeaten 21. There were, however, takeaways from the tour.”First, working under [WV] Raman sir,” for whom it was the first assignment as India’s head coach. “He keeps encouraging me, and pretty much everyone – it helps my confidence. Second, relearning the importance of watching the ball at the point of release because there’s a lot of wind in New Zealand, so it gets more challenging there. It’s a simple thing we are taught in our early days of formal training with the bat, but a reminder about how vital it is can have a big impact on our batting.”When it comes to her bowling, one aspect in particular has attracted attention.”Soon after [R] Ashwin’s mankading incident [the Jos Buttler dismissal in the IPL], many people started saying maybe I would also do this someday,” says Deepti with a chuckle about her tendency to stop in her delivery stride or pull out of her action altogether. “It’s a way to upset the batsman’s rhythm, and I think it works for me. I started doing it out of sheer whim, and then it became a habit. Everyone in the Indian team knows Deepti does this, so they just let me be, but no opposition batsman has ever told me anything about it.”Which side of the debate does she come down on?”If I have to mankad, I’ll give the non-striker a warning first, because even though it’s within the laws, I don’t think it’s in the spirit of the game.””In batting, I’ve tried to adopt a slightly more aggressive approach, because if ever the team wants me to perform a role in that mould, I should be able to”•Getty ImagesNow in the fifth year of her international career, Deepti says captaining her former domestic sides UP and Central Zone, and India Green last year, and playing and living in a new city, Kolkata, as a professional for Bengal since the 2017-18 season, have helped broaden her perspective on playing for the national team.”The younger Deepti would think that once you make it to the Indian team, [you’ve achieved a lot]. What she didn’t realise back then is challenge Women’s team [To stay stuck in is a different challenge, so what if it’s the women’s team?] A cricket team is a cricket team, and each one of us has to prove our worth.”A hectic international schedule awaits her – India will host South Africa in September, then fly to the West Indies the following month. A tri-series in Australia in January 2020 will precede the World T20, and she could also be in contention for a place in the A side that will tour Australia in December this year. There are plenty of opportunities, but a steady stream of rookie talents making their way into the Indian team means there is that much more competition for each of those slots.Deepti says she is aware of the challenges facing her and is gearing up to tackle them head-on. ” aggression type aggression hain [My aggression is a quiet aggression],” she says. “I mean, my personality is such you’ll see that aggression reflect in my desire to get better in all three departments. I am not someone who will show aggression in any other way. I am quiet and shy by nature.”She says the uptick in interest in the India women’s cricket team following the 2017 World Cup has brought in some new pressures. “After the tournament, we got greater financial security and recognition. Earlier, I used to be really shy even to say yes to selfie requests, and although it doesn’t come naturally to me even now, I’m learning to tackle these [requests],” she says.On the cusp of turning 22, some things haven’t changed for her, though. The hair still remains close-cropped. Social media posts are still only part of “being an athlete managed by a player-management company”. And she continues to be as soft-spoken: every third syllable she utters still makes a listener lean in to catch it.Most of all, by Deepti’s own admission, she continues to be every bit the Suresh Raina fan, who during India’s World Cup opener tweeted that Deepti was one of his favourite players.”It’s still that Raina inside-out six that I want to nail,” says Deepti. “It never was perfect, and still requires a lot of work. I’ll keep at it until I get it right.”

Devdutt Padikkal carves his own niche in star-studded Karnataka line-up

The 19-year old has impressed RCB director of cricket Mike Hesson and captain Virat Kohli with his run-spree and attitude

Shashank Kishore30-Nov-2019In November 2018, Devdutt Padikkal was an India Under-19 aspirant, knocking on the doors of the Karnataka senior team. A year on, he has not just broken the door open but has also left his imprint in a star-studded batting line-up that has KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey and Karun Nair in their ranks.Last week, Padikkal became the first player to complete 1000 runs across formats in 2019-20 Indian domestic season. He topped the batting charts – 609 runs in 11 innings, with two centuries and five half-centuries- in Karnataka’s victorious Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign. Currently, he is leading Karnataka’s charge in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and has put his side just one step away from defending their T20 title.Like in the 50-over competition, he is perched on top of the run charts here too. He currently has 548 runs in 11 innings, with five half-centuries and a century, at an average of 68.50 and a strike rate of 178.50. At times, he has comfortably overshadowed his senior opening partner Rahul, Karnataka’s next-highest run-scorer with 291 runs from seven innings.ALSO READ – Fitness revolution helps Rohan Kadam chart a new courseIt was the Padikkal-Rahul partnership that punctured Haryana’s hopes of a maiden Mushtaq Ali final on Friday. Chasing 195, the pair put on 125 in just 9.3 overs to flatten a more-than-competitive attack comprising the legspinning duo of Amit Mishra and Yuzvendra Chahal, offspinner Jayant Yadav and seam-bowling allrounder Harshal Patel. Padikkal smashed 87 off just 42 balls, hitting 11 fours and four towering sixes, two of which sailed outside the compound wall of the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium.Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach, gave Padikkal a thumbs up as he walked off, all but sealing Karnataka’s win. Hesson is now Director of Cricket at Royal Challengers Bangalore, who retained the 19-year-old ahead of the upcoming IPL auction. Padikkal was part of Royal Challengers’ roster in 2019 too but didn’t play a single game. Yet, it was his attitude that impressed Virat Kohli, the captain, who passed on some feedback to the new support staff led by Hesson and Simon Katich.”Feedback from last season regarding Devdutt was that he made an excellent impression with his willingness to learn from the experienced players around him,” Hesson told ESPNcricinfo. “Being a local Karnataka lad, who this domestic season has shown an ability to step up quickly. To have such an excellent season when only 19 is very heartening for RCB for sure. Devdutt is focusing on the right things at the moment and if he continues to do so, he will have a very successful career ahead of him.”Devdutt Padikkal collects his Man-of-the-Match award•Karnataka Premier LeagueFor Hesson, it’s not his first assignment in the IPL, or for that matter in India. He was Kings XI Punjab’s head coach in 2019. That aside, he has extensively worked as a cricket analyst for broadcasters Star Sports. As part of that routine, he was on duty during the Karnataka Premier League, a local T20 competition. It was there that Hesson first had a good look at Padikkal, who draws inspiration from the “character and fight” he saw in Gautam Gambhir while growing up.So what are Padikkal’s strengths as a batsman? “He batted in the middle order at the KPL, and he showed power both sides of the wicket, which was impressive for such a young player,” Hesson explained. “Being a tall player, Devdutt has long reach but is also light on his feet which helps him control length, which is so important especially against spin. Devdutt’s game sense and tempo have been very impressive in both 50-over and T20 cricket.”With his ability to see his side through to victory from the top of the order rather than just play cameos in the middle order which I saw during the KPL, he has shown further speedy development in his game. The ability to adapt to situations and swap between formats is difficult for any experienced player. So to be able to do that with such success this season, at 19 years of age, is incredibly impressive.”Padikkal has been impressed upon the need to see games through, not just set it up for the teams. The mantra has come from none other than Manish Pandey, the Karnataka captain, from his own experience of being part of India’s limited-overs set-up. Incidentally, it was an outing against Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy that proved to be a turning point of sorts. Having dug in to make 60 off 103 balls in a fairly low-pressure chase, he was out looking for a big hit while batting with the tail. He was the eighth batsman out, and Karnataka went on to lose by 21 runs in a chase of 199.”When you see young guys like Devdutt getting the most runs in the tournament, it feels really awesome for me as a captain,” Pandey said after Karnataka’s Vijay Hazare Trophy win. “I think his mindset changed in a way after that Hyderabad game. It hurt him a lot, the way he got out, because he was the only specialist batsman remaining. If he had batted through, we would have won. It was a learning for him. Glad he overcame that and batted the way he batted in the [rest of] tournament.”With Rahul and Agarwal likely to be away on national duty at different stages of the Ranji Trophy, Padikkal will get a chance to establish himself as an opener in first-class cricket too. If he continues to churn runs as he has done so far, an India A berth during the shadow tour of New Zealand early next year cannot be out of bounds either. But before that, he has a title to win on Sunday. Meanwhile, two titles with the tag of ‘highest run-getter’ in both tournaments is already a bumper start to the season.

Van Dijk 2.0: Liverpool to intensify talks for 'one of the world's best'

Liverpool are set for a busy summer transfer window, with the upper and lower thirds believed to be the priority areas for Arne Slot and the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes.

Issues in the goalscoring department recently have amplified the noise from fans looking for a new centre-forward, someone prolific who can ease Mohamed Salah’s talismanic burden – should the Egyptian be plying his trade on Merseyside next year, of course.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

However, the rear end of the field is just as important, with Virgil van Dijk’s contract also nearing its end. Regardless of whether the all-inspiring captain stays on for the next few years, a new face is needed.

Liverpool lining up new defender

In a report that the Spanish media are labelling a ‘bombshell’, Liverpool have set their sights on Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo this summer, in the event that Van Dijk departs.

As per the report, negotiations over the signing of the towering centre-back are set to ‘intensify’ in the coming weeks.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Valued at around €60m (£50m) by the La Liga table-toppers, Araujo has been one of the standout defenders in Spain since joining from Uruguayan side Boston Rivers in 2018, growing in strength and stature each season.

Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.

Aged 26, Araujo’s prime years should lie ahead of him, and if Van Dijk is to leave Liverpool this summer, this may be the perfect signing.

The perfect Van Dijk heir

Dubbed “one of the best defenders in the world” by one-time Barcelona great Carlos Puyol, Araujo has been a pillar of strength at the back for Barcelona over the past several years, having accumulated 164 senior appearances in total, notably lifting the La Liga title and Copa del Rey titles once each.

Described as an “athletic monster” and a “cheat code” by BBC Sport analyst Raj Chohan, the 6 foot 2 Araujo’s combination of power and pace suggest that he’s got what it takes to succeed Van Dijk.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo

Though Araujo missed the first half of the season due to injury, he’s returned to action since the new year with a fluid and convincing feel that underlines his quality as one of La Liga’s standout defenders, maybe even Europe’s.

Fearsome and athletic, he matches up very well indeed against Van Dijk, widely considered to be one of the best defenders of his generation.

Moreover, Araujo has won 62% of his duels in La Liga this season, whereas Van Dijk has won 68% in England’s top flight (both sets of data courtesy of Sofascore).

Though Araujo has faced fitness issues in the past, Liverpool’s impressive injury record under Slot’s wing suggests Anfield could be a hothouse from which Araujo could foster his high-level skills and step up to a new degree of quality.

Liverpool’s star centre-back adds a dimension from attacking set-pieces too, and that’s something Araujo could further emulate. The Uruguay international’s injury problems have limited him to just 14 appearances across all competitions this term, but he’s still managed to chip in with two goals and assists apiece.

Ultimately, Van Dijk’s greatness transcends his defensive role, and it would be futile to expect his replacement to provide the same level of quality.

However, were Slot to get his paws on Araujo’s combative quality, there’s every chance that Liverpool will continue to challenge for the most illustrious honours next year.

His La Blaugrana boss, Hansi Flick, has also described him as a “leader” and “one of the best in the world,” after all.

£15k-p/w Celtic star could leave this summer with lucrative offer on table

Celtic are pushing on with their hunt for another domestic treble, but they will also be planning ahead for the summer window to navigate potential incomings and departures.

Celtic expecting movement in both directions this summer

The Bhoys only require three more victories at a maximum to guarantee a fourth successive Scottish Premiership title and travel to St Johnstone this weekend hoping to hasten the process ahead off taking on Kilmarnock next Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers could also secure the Scottish Cup should he navigate past the Perthshire side at Hampden later in the month followed by either Hearts or Aberdeen in the final. Still, the Irishman will have one eye on a summer transfer window that is set to produce incomings and outgoings at Parkhead.

Notably, Kieran Tierney will complete an emotional return to Celtic on a free transfer once his contract at Arsenal officially expires. Expected to be joined by plenty of new faces, the Scotland international is likely to become the preferred choice at left-back ahead of next season’s Champions League qualifiers.

Honing in on the engine room, the Hoops also have Augsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj on their radar and the Kosovo international may be attainable for a fee between £3 million and £3.5 million.

Optimism is high in Glasgow’s east end over new signings, though several key stars may be linked with moves elsewhere following an excellent campaign for all involved at Parkhead. Reo Hatate, Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda are all players Rodgers will be desperate to keep hold of heading into 2025/26.

Nevertheless, the former Liverpool boss may be forced to part ways with one of his established core in the off-season, per recent developments.

Dinamo Zagreb table significant offer to sign Celtic's Greg Taylor

According to The Daily Record, Dinamo Zagreb have put forward a contract offer to Celtic star Greg Taylor that is deemed to be a ‘significant increase’ on his current £15,000 weekly pay packet at Parkhead.

The Scotland international has also attracted interest from Major League Soccer, which isn’t dead in the water, but a switch Croatia’s reigning champions appears to be his likeliest port of call. Rodgers previously emboldened him to extend his time at the club, though has now publicly conceded defeat on that front.

Celtic have already signed incredible Taylor replacement & it's not Tierney

ByDan Emery Apr 2, 2025

Taylor has gone on to become a valiant servant for Celtic since arriving from Kilmarnock back in 2019, registering nine goals and 32 assists in 208 appearances across all competitions.

Playing his part in the Bhoys claiming ten trophies, the Greenock-born man has earned respect from his peers north of the border after seeing off the likes of Boli Bolingoli, Diego Laxalt and Alexandro Bernabei for the first-choice left-back slot in Glasgow.

However, all good things come to an end, and it appears that Tierney’s arrival from Arsenal has prompted Taylor to look elsewhere as he approaches the prime of his career.

Revealed: The key reason Brendan Rodgers may now threaten to quit Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers could leave the club this summer if he doesn’t get his way with one key thing, according to a worrying update regarding his future.

Rodgers unhappy amid doubts over his future

The Hoops lost 1-0 away to St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon, delaying their Scottish Premiership title triumph, following a disappointing performance. It may still be 13 points clear at the top of the table, but an angry Rodgers made it clear what he thought of the display.

“Bitterly disappointing. It’s a huge credit to St Johnstone and congratulations to them. For us, poor start to the game, but not the first time and this is something for me that we will look at, certainly in the summer. But the start was really poor, it was soft, it was too comfortable in the game. We go behind and then obviously we are much better in the second half. There’s definitely anger. I’m trying to control it.”

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

There have also been reports over Rodgers’ future at Celtic in recent days, with no guarantee that he will stay put this summer and a return to the Premier League mooted. While the latest reports described him as “content” in his current role, they also claimed he “could quit” if interest arrives from an English club that appeals to him. Now, a fresh update has dropped, further shedding light on the situation.

Rodgers could leave Celtic if wish isn't granted

According to Football Insider, Rodgers will “demand the backing of the Celtic board” this summer, or potentially leave as manager if it doesn’t happen. The 52-year-old “wants to build on the success his side have had this season”, and while this again states that he is happy currently, that “could change if the board fail to meet his demands ahead of the off-season”.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

This should certainly act as a warning to Celtic’s board, with Rodgers making it clear that he won’t be amused if funds aren’t made for him to bring in new faces this summer.

While those looking from the outside may look at the Premiership table and ask where there is any great need for reinforcements, bringing a freshness to the Hoops’ squad is always important, especially for a European challenge.

Rodgers will be aware that he hasn’t yet impressed too muchin European competition with Celtic, so he will be desperate to make more of an impression in the Champions League moving forward. It sounds as though the Irishman is more likely to remain at Parkhead than leave, but this latest update should act as a word of warning to those high up at the club.

Worse than Kuhn: Celtic must axe star who lost the ball every 4 touches

Celtic slipped to a shock defeat to bottom side St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon

ByRobbie Walls Apr 6, 2025

Losing Rodgers would be a big blow, given his talent as a manager, and seeing him depart so early in his second spell at the club could see the Hoops lose momentum.

Worth more than Elanga: Man Utd have struck gold on £120k-p/w "wizard"

The footballing gods were in playful mood on Tuesday evening, as Manchester United slipped to a 13th Premier League defeat of the season, having been undone by one of their own academy graduate at the City Ground.

Now plying his trade for Nottingham Forest, Anthony Elanga ripped through the Red Devils at breakneck speed to net what proved to be the game’s only goal, with the fleet-footed Swede having now registered 29 goals and assists since leaving United back in 2023.

Sold for just £15m, the 22-year-old has made that fee look an absolute “bargain” amid his form since – as noted by analyst Ben Mattinson – albeit with new boss Ruben Amorim appearing to refute claims that selling the winger was a mistake.

Speaking in his post-match press conference following the 1-0 defeat, Amorim suggested that in-form players like Elanga – and Marcus Rashford – had been given a fair “chance” to succeed at Old Trafford, while then going on to state that the “pressure is too big” for certain players at the club.

In essence, the 40-year-old appeared to hint that such talents have only been able to flourish after breaking free of the scrutiny that comes with playing for such a historic club like United.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimduring the press conference

In the case of Elanga, his fruitful stint at Forest has followed a return of just four goals and four assists in 55 first-team games for United – were the club really in the wrong to sell him?

Why Man Utd sold Elanga in 2023

In the view of journalist Samuel Luckhurst, the “only mistake” that the Red Devils – then led by Erik ten Hag – made was “not getting a higher fee” for the Swedish speedster upon his exit almost two years ago, with Elanga hardly setting the world alight prior to that departure.

Onana

Despite scoring his first senior goal away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign, it wasn’t until the arrival of interim boss, Ralf Rangnick, that Elanga properly forced his way into the first-team frame the following season.

Much of the winger’s impact came in the final few months of 2021/22, having scored away at Brentford and Leeds United, as well as in the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Those latter two strikes came in just the space of a few days, although as it proved, Elanga wouldn’t score again for the club after that, having been reduced to a bit-part role following Ten Hag’s arrival.

As the BBC’s Simon Stone has stated, the Dutchman ‘did not feel Elanga had the quality needed to be enough of an influence on his squad’, hence the decision to let him depart.

anthony-elanga-premier-league-everton-transfers

Having failed to score in 26 games in 2022/23, there were likely few objections when the Malmo-born starlet was eventually sold, not least with Alejandro Garnacho having emerged that season.

Hindsight might suggest that Ten Hag was mistaken in his view of Elanga, although it could be argued that United already have a bigger talent on the flanks – he just wasn’t playing on Tuesday…

The Man Utd star who's worth more than Elanga

There were instant comparisons made between the performances of Garnacho and Elanga at the City Ground, with the Argentine perhaps in danger of heading the same way as his former teammate, amid talk of an exit.

Elanga vs Garnacho

That said, it’s worth remembering that as Elanga toiled in 2022/23, a star was born in Garnacho, with the then-teenager ending that campaign with nine goals and assists in the senior ranks.

In a team that looks far too content with playing it safe in attack, Garnacho is, to his credit, a risk tasker – so too, is Amad Diallo.

As previously explored, the Ivorian had fallen behind the likes of Elanga in the pecking order amid a muted start to life in Manchester, with the diminutive left-footer having arrived on a £19m deal from Atalanta in January 2021.

It has arguably taken until this season for the one-time Rangers and Sunderland loanee to truly become a central figure at Old Trafford, but boy, has he taken his chance.

Following Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell – which yielded two goals and one assist for Amad – the 22-year-old had been the shining light of United’s campaign, up until last month’s cruel injury blow, having chalked up 12 goal involvements in only 20 games under Amorim.

The wing “wizard” – as previously hailed by journalist James Copley – has nine goals and eight assists to his name in total this season, with Elanga, meanwhile, having contributed six goals and nine assists for Forest.

Currently leading his former colleague for goal contributions, Amad is also deemed to be the higher value asset, according to Transfermarkt, having seen his worth soar to £34m. Elanga, by contrast, is valued at ‘just’ £29m.

That rising valuation has followed the signing of a new long-term contract for the £120k-per-week sensation, with Amorim also providing a boost after suggesting that his rising star is set to return before the campaign is over.

As that bumper new deal has indicated, Amad represents the future of Man Utd. Elanga – for all his positive displays since leaving Old Trafford – is now part of the past.

One of his poorest-ever displays: 5/10 Spurs dud was worse than Richarlison

Player ratings via Sofascore

Well, last night’s Premier League game just about summed up Tottenham Hotspur’s season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side came into the match against Nottingham Forest likely still ecstatic off the back of their Europa League quarter-final triumph away to Eintracht Frankfurt, but instead of building on that momentum, they fell back into old habits.

It took all of five minutes for the visitors to go one-nil up courtesy of a long-range effort from Elliot Anderson that rebounded off Rodrigo Bentancur.

Then, just 15 minutes later, Chris Wood doubled the Tricky Trees’ lead with a well-taken header helped by some terrible goalkeeping from Guglielmo Vicario.

While it wasn’t the worst performance of the Lilywhites’ season, there were still plenty of starters who left a lot to be desired, including Richarlison.

Richarlison's game vs Forest

Now, before the pitchforks come out, it’s only fair to commend Richarlison on the goal he scored in the 87th minute – a lovely header from a pinpoint Pedro Porro cross.

However, if we are being honest, that was pretty much the only good thing he did in the entire game, and had he been on song, he could and probably should have got, at the very least, a couple more.

In fact, aside from a few missed chances, he was practically anonymous for the majority of the game and offered very little in the way of build-up play or support for his teammates.

It was a display in stark contrast to what we saw from Dominic Solanke on Thursday night.

It might sound harsh, but London World’s Toby Bryant shares this opinion, as he gave the Brazilian a 6/10 match rating at full-time and wrote that he ‘needs to be available to receive the ball so much more.’

His statistics don’t make for pleasant reading either, as in 95 minutes of action, he scored just a single goal from an expected goals figure of 1.48, didn’t even register 0.01 expected assists, missed three big chances and failed in 100% of his dribbles.

In short, it wasn’t a great night for the former Everton star, although he did at least get on the scoresheet, which cannot be said about another of the starters who put in a terribly disappointing display.

The Spurs star worse than Richarlison

Unfortunately, you could name quite a few players here, from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero to Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr.

Still, when it comes down to it, Dejan Kulusevski was potentially the most disappointing of the lot.

Like Richarlison, the Swedish international was mostly a passenger last night, but unlike the Brazilian, he wasn’t able to pop up with a goal, as his effort in the second half was cleared off the line.

Moreover, apart from that one effort, it’s hard to think of a single positive thing the former Juventus star did, which is made all the worse by the fact the North Londoners had 70% of the possession.

Again, this is an opinion shared by Bryant, who awarded the midfielder just a 5/10 match rating at full-time, writing that he was ‘generally sluggish,’ which is not what you want to hear about someone considered to be one of your very best players. Truth be told, it was perhaps one of his poorest nights of the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, his statistics from the night back up this assessment, as in 67 minutes of action, he amassed a combined expected goal and assists figure of just 0.10 to rubberstamp how mediocre a night it was for one of their star men.

Furthermore, his touch count of only 38 meant he had 15 fewer than Van de Ven and six fewer than Romero, a stat that’s made worse by the fact the defensive duo left the field at the interval.

Ultimately, Richarlison and Kulusevski looked like players who were still getting back to full fitness, but with a must-win game coming up next Thursday, they need to get there quickly, especially the Swede.

Crystal Palace eyeing £30m "phenomenon" who's part of "incredible" defence

Crystal Palace have been “watching” a centre-back, who has been a key part of an “incredible” defence this season, according to former scout Mick Brown.

Palace stepping up centre-back pursuit

It will be a tall order for Palace to replace captain Marc Guehi this summer, but it is looking increasingly likely Oliver Glasner will have to bring in a new centre-back, given that the 24-year-old has not agreed terms on a contract extension.

As such, the Eagles have now stepped up their pursuit of a new centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window, and they could make a statement signing by bringing in Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Skriniar, having now joined the race for the Slovakian.

Skriniar is one of the more well-known targets, but there could be an addition out of left-field, with Glasner’s side also making contact over a deal for Independiente De Avellaneda’s Kevin Lomonaco, who may be available for just £5m this summer.

According to former scout Brown, in an interview with Football Insider, Crystal Palace are also in the race for Burnley defender Maxime Esteve, having sent officials to watch him in action this season.

Brown said: “Everton and Crystal Palace have been watching him, among other teams, and have had scouts at Turf Moor to keep an eye on his performance.

“Burnley want to keep him, especially if they get promoted to the Premier League, but a really good offer for him could get that over the line.”

Burnley's MaximeEstevecelebrates after the match

Esteve was also singled out for praise, given the Clarets’ exceptional defensive record this season, with Brown adding: “This season, he’s really pushed on and he’s been an integral part of an outstanding Burnley defence.

“They’ve conceded just 13 goals in 42 league games this year, it’s incredible.”

"Phenomenon" Esteve ready for Premier League

Burnley’s defensive record in the Championship this season has been nothing short of remarkable, having conceded just 14 goals, and the 22-year-old has played an absolutely crucial role, making 43 appearances.

The Burnley star is particularly impressive in possession of the ball, ranking in the 91st percentile for passes attempted per 90 over the past year, and 89th for his pass completion rate, having previously received high praise for his ball skills from football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Esteve appears to have the hallmarks of a quality modern-day centre-back, and his performances for Burnley this season indicate he is definitely ready for a Premier League move, but Crystal Palace may have to shell out around £30m for his services.

Positive talks held: Arsenal now advancing in deal to sign £61m "monster"

Arsenal have now held positive talks over a deal for a £61m striker, with discussions set to continue over the next few weeks, according to a report.

Gunners' striker pursuit heating up

The Gunners proved they have what it takes to compete without an out-and-out striker against Real Madrid last week, chalking up an extraordinary 3-0 victory against the reigning European champions, but it is clear Mikel Arteta wants to bring in a new option this summer.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres is one of the names on the shortlist, with a £87m offer for the Swedish forward in the works, while a stunning £129m bid for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez is also being prepared, as the Argentine is now considered a top target.

Other strikers who have received widespread links to the Emirates Stadium include Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, and the latter was said to be very keen on moving to north London during the January transfer window.

Huge upgrade on Merino: Berta wants Arsenal to sign £55m "goal machine"

Given that Mikel Merino is playing the makeshift centre-forward, Arsenal are in the market for a striker, so do they lead the race for a goal machine?

There has now been a positive development in Arsenal’s pursuit of Sesko, with a report from TEAMtalk revealing they have now cleared an important obstacle in their pursuit of the striker by holding positive talks with his entourage.

The Gunners have been in direct talks with the Slovenian’s representatives, and the outcome was positive, which indicates he could be keen on a summer move to the Emirates Stadium, but he will not come cheap.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoscores their first goal from the penalty spot

The 21-year-old is protected by a £61m release clause in his RB Leipzig contract, which could increase slightly based on how he performs for the German side.

Regardless, the north Londoners are seriously keen on the young striker, and discussions are set to continue over the next few weeks.

"Monster" Sesko impressing for Leipzig

The Slovenia international has established himself as a very important player for Leipzig this season, making 40 appearances in all competitions, during which he has amassed 19 goals, including four in the Champions League.

Such is the starlet’s ability, he has been lauded as a “monster” by freelance scout Ben Mattinson, while reporter Sam Dean believes he could be a good fit for the Gunners, given that he possesses qualities very few of Arteta’s players have.

Sesko’s eye for goal could make him a fantastic addition to Arteta’s squad, having vastly outperformed his non-penalty xG over the past year, so it is exciting news that the move is now advancing.

Top target: Arsenal and Berta in talks to seal early deal for £60m striker

Arsenal are now in talks to seal an early summer deal for a “sensational” striker, who has now emerged as their top target, according to a report.

Gunners' striker pursuit heating up

These are exciting times for the Gunners, who are daring to dream after defeating Real Madrid over two legs to reach the Champions League semi-final, but there is a feeling a top striker could be the final piece of the jigsaw in their Premier League title pursuit next season.

As such, the north Londoners are now ramping up their pursuit of a new forward, and talks have now been held over a deal for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with sporting director Andre Berta trying to convince the Slovenian to move to the Emirates Stadium.

However, given that a deal for Sesko could amount to £58m, there may be a temptation to look at a cheaper alternative, and talks have also been held over Lille striker Jonathan David, who is set to be available on a free transfer this summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side have expressed clear interest in Sesko and David, but a different striker is now their first choice option for the summer transfer window.

According to a report from Football Insider, Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres is now Arsenal’s top target, and they have opened talks to sign the Sweden international in an early summer deal.

Berta is known to be an admirer of Gyokeres, and the sporting director is driving the pursuit, with negotiations ongoing to try and convince him about the move to north London, while the Gunners are also attempting to put a package together.

The Sporting CP star becoming the north Londoners’ top target is the latest ‘twist’ in their pursuit of a new striker, with bringing in an elite forward deemed to be a priority heading into the summer window.

"Sensational" Gyokeres is a goal machine

Despite having an £86m release clause, Fabrizio Romano has revealed the Swedish striker will cost up to £60m this summer, which seems a reasonable fee, given just how impressive his goal and assist record has been this season.

The 26-year-old was lauded as “sensational” by Richard Keys earlier in the campaign, and his performances in Portugal indicate that he is now ready to make the step-up to a top club.

While there may be some concerns that Gyokeres is yet to prove himself in a major league, his Champions League exploits this season suggest he could be a fantastic signing for Arsenal, and potentially the missing piece of the jigsaw in their title bid.
